Knowledge Driven Search Intent Mining, Ashutosh Jadhav Jan 2016

Knowledge Driven Search Intent Mining, Ashutosh Jadhav

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Understanding users' latent intents behind search queries is essential for satisfying a user's search needs. Search intent mining can help search engines to enhance its ranking of search results, enabling new search features like instant answers, personalization, search result diversification, and the recommendation of more relevant ads. Hence, there has been increasing attention on studying how to effectively mine search intents by analyzing search engine query logs. While state-of-the-art techniques can identify the domain of the queries (e.g. sports, movies, health), identifying domain-specific intent is still an open problem. Among all the topics available on the Internet, health is one …

The History And Influence Of Maria Sibylla Merian's Bird-Eating Tarantula: Circulating Images And The Production Of Natural Knowledge, Kay Etheridge Jan 2016

The History And Influence Of Maria Sibylla Merian's Bird-Eating Tarantula: Circulating Images And The Production Of Natural Knowledge, Kay Etheridge

Biology Faculty Publications

Chapter Summary: A 2009 exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum on the confluence of science and the visual arts included a plate from a nineteenth-century encyclopedia owned by Charles Darwin showing a tarantula poised over a dead bird (figure 3.1).1 The genesis of this startling scene was a work by Maria Sibylla Merian (German, 1647–1717), and the history of this image says much about how knowledge of the New World was obtained, and how it was transmitted to the studies and private libraries of Europe, and from there into popular works like Darwin’s encyclopedia. It is unlikely that Merian ever imagined …

Reference Magnetism As A Solution To The Moral Twin Earth Problem, William Dunaway Jan 2016

Reference Magnetism As A Solution To The Moral Twin Earth Problem, William Dunaway

Philosophy Faculty Works

‘Moral Twin Earth’ thought experiments constitute a central semantic challenge to naturalistic normative realism. This paper first outlines a general framework for understanding the challenge, according to which (i) central normative terms are semantically stable in ways that contrast with many other paradigmatic descriptive terms, and (ii) realists should expect to have a unified meta-semantic theory that explains the difference in stability between the normative and descriptive terms in question. The most attractive way of meeting this challenge, we argue, appeals to the idea of reference magnetism. According to this influential idea, some properties are reference magnets, which (roughly) means …

Schools As Systems Of Care Supporting Mental Wellness In Schools: Teacher Perceptions And Roles, Tracy Lynn Scanlon Limegrover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Schools lack a response system for effectively supporting student mental health needs and there is a substantial research to practice gap in this area. To better understand how to build capacity for schools, with and through teachers, the purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of current mental health needs in their schools; their knowledge and competencies about mental health issues as well as perceived competencies and barriers that contribute to burnout. Participants included 20 teachers from two local Pittsburgh area Catholic schools. Teachers reported they believe it is their job to support middle school student mental wellness …

The ability to read is the foundational skill which is taught in elementary schools across the state of Indiana. It is a complex process which allows children to derive meaning from printed text. Reading is the basis for learning and growth to continue during a childs Educational life (Opitz & Rasinski, 1998). Over time throughout history, the ability to read is and has been the great equalizer for people (Ruddell, Ruddell, & Singer, 1994). Reading has been taught and evaluated in many different ways (Groves, 2009). The state of Indiana has developed a standardized assessment to measure a childs reading …

Impacting Factors On Elementary Students Who Have High Levels Of Success In School While Living With Low Socioeconomic Status, Casey Patterson Smitherman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to deliver a better understanding of an impoverished students perspective of school success and, in particular, what factors lead students to be successful. In an effort to better understand why some students beat the odds, I met with groups of fifth and sixth grade students who have experienced school success on a variety of measures to hear directly from these preadolescents about what they believed has fostered their success. Three overarching themes emerged from the focus groups held at two different intermediate level schools in metropolitan suburban districts in Indianapolis, Indiana (a) …

Cultural Competency In Game Based Three Dimensional Battlefield Simulations, Michael A. Dascanio

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was that the ability of Game Based Three Dimensional Battlefield Simulations to train cultural competency in U.S. Army officers is unknown. The study sample included officers enrolled in Army Engineer School Basic Officer Course during a three month period from January 2016 to March 2016. To establish a baseline of cultural competency, the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) was administered to students prior to training in virtual battlefield simulations. The CQS is a questionnaire constructed specifically to measure cultural competency. Once the level of cultural competency development was documented, the next phase was to conduct training …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The gap between the expectations and norms of higher Educational institutions and post-graduation employers can sometimes be wide. Internships and other experiential endeavors can help bridge this gap and provide a link between the two spheres, possibly with each component reinforcing the other. This paper examines in detail one such program: the Indiana State Senate Majority Internship Program, and relates how the experiences of this program compare to predictions and suggestions found in relevant literature.

Effects Of Emotional Intelligence On Academic Achievement In The Alternative High School Classroom, Rhonda L. Marcum-Phillips

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the impact of emotional intelligence, academic self-efficacy in science and technology, and family background on academic achievement of alternative high school students. Gender, age, learning style, and ethnicity of the student are analyzed to determine any moderator effect on these relationships. Seventy-five students, ages 14 to19, who attend a public alternative high school were surveyed. Analysis of the data revealed a positive relationship for males between self-efficacy in STEM classes and family background (support) and their academic achievement in science class. A positive relationship was shown between self-efficacy in STEM classes and academic achievement, between self-efficacy in …

“Arise From The Dust”: Insights From Dust-Related Themes In The Book Of Mormon Part 1: Tracks From The Book Of Moses, Jeff Lindsay Jan 2016

“Arise From The Dust”: Insights From Dust-Related Themes In The Book Of Mormon Part 1: Tracks From The Book Of Moses, Jeff Lindsay

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In light of Noel Reynolds’ hypothesis that some material in the Book of Moses may have been present on the brass plates that Nephi used, one may wonder if Nephi or other authors might also have drawn upon the use of chains in the Book of Moses, particularly Satan’s “great chain [that] veiled … the earth with darkness” (Moses 7:26) and the “chains of darkness” (Moses 7:57). Though the phrase “chains of darkness” is not used in the Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 1:23, quoting Lehi, combines chains and obscurity, where obscurity can have the meaning of darkness. In fact, …

Is There A Bilingual Advantage In Phonetic And Phonological Acquisition? The Initial Learning Of Word-Final Coronal Stop Realization In A Novel Accent Of English, Laura Spinu, Jiwon Hwang, Renata Lohmann Jan 2016

Is There A Bilingual Advantage In Phonetic And Phonological Acquisition? The Initial Learning Of Word-Final Coronal Stop Realization In A Novel Accent Of English, Laura Spinu, Jiwon Hwang, Renata Lohmann

Publications and Research

Research question: We address the question of whether the cognitive advantage of the bilingual mind, already demonstrated in the case of auditory processing or novel word acquisition, also applies to other linguistic domains, specifically to phonetic and phonological learning.

Design: We compare the performance of 17 monolinguals and 25 bilinguals from Canada in a production experiment with two tasks: imitation and spontaneous reproduction of a novel foreign accent, specifically Sussex English.

Data and analysis: To eliminate potential sources of variability, our focus is on a sound already existing in the subjects’ production (the glottal stop), but differently mapped to surface …

Towards A Community Patent, Antonio G. Tapia Jan 2016

Towards A Community Patent, Antonio G. Tapia

Florida A & M University Law Review

During the European Patent Forum of May 2008, Gunter Verheugen, European Commissioner for Enterprise and Industry, declared there was an "urgent need [for a community patent]." The sentiment was well received. However, in 2009, all attempts to implement a patent policy to standardize prosecution and grant across all European Union Community countries failed. Since the 1970's, there have been ongoing discussions toward the creation of a Community-wide patent in the European Union (EU). In 2003, prospects for enacting a Community Patent Regulation (CPR) seemed hopeful and almost complete. However, in 2004, a stalemate arose which made the enactment of the …

A Detailed Rubric For Assessing The Quality Of Teacher Resource Apps, Todd Cherner, Cheng-Yuan Lee, Alex Fegely, Lauren Santaniello

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the advent of the iPhone and rise of mobile technologies, educational apps represent one of the fastest growing markets, and both the mobile technology and educational app markets are predicted to continue experiencing growth into the foreseeable future. The irony, however, is that even with a booming market for educational apps, very little research regarding the quality of them has been conducted. Though some instruments have been developed to evaluate apps geared towards student learning, no such instrument has been created for teacher resource apps, which are designed to assist teachers in completing common tasks (e.g., taking attendance, communicating …
