The Western Curriculum And Identity Conflict Among Pakistani Students, Tauqeer Abdullah, Johar Ali
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Education systems play a critical role in shaping students’ cultural identities in an increasingly globalized world. In Pakistan, the growing presence of international schools following Western curricula exposes students to values that often diverge from local traditions. Drawing on Erikson’s identity theory, Berry’s acculturation model, and Tajfel and Turner’s social identity theory, this study examines how Western curricula influence students’ self-perception, identity conflict, and cultural alienation. Data were collected from 324 students (179 males, 145 females) enrolled in O-level and A-level programs across five international schools in Lahore, Punjab, using a cross-sectional survey design. The results indicate that Western curricula …

NBC News, as an international media outlet, plays a significant role in shaping public perception and moral evaluation of social issues. Its coverage of the Debanhi Escobar case in Mexico has attracted widespread international attention, particularly in relation to the handling of feminicide by Law Enforcement Authorities. Within this context, the present study investigates how NBC News represents Law Enforcement Authorities in reporting the Debanhi Escobar case and how such representations construct moral and institutional evaluations. This study applies Fairclough’s Dialectical Relational Approach (DRA) to examine the relationship between textual strategies, social practices, and power relations embedded in media discourse. …

Finding Meaning In A Historical Fiction Of Cold War: A Case Study Of Pamuntjak’S Question Of Red, Margihon Bayu Putra Kaumpungan
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
The Cold War and its legacy in Southeast Asia, has been considered as one of the darkest parts of the region’s history including in Indonesia. Efforts to capture the painful memory of the Cold War had been established through various means including fictional storytelling. Among many literature discussing the dark history of the era, Laksmi Pamuntjak “Question on Red” had its distinctive presence since it was written in English. The utilization of English as a medium opens the door for English speaking readers to be able to dwell into a literature work that is considerably unfamiliar to their cultural context. …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This article explores how digital recording practices, amid contemporary technological transformation, rearticulate the musical meaning of karawitan, reshape listening experience, and reorganize its modes of cultural circulation. The study is situated within broader scholarly debates on digital mediation, particularly concerning the shifting relationship between recorded sound and the socio-spatial and ritual contexts that have historically constituted karawitan performance. Using a descriptive qualitative case-study approach, the research draws on in depth interviews with musicians (pengrawit), scholars, distributors, and listeners, supported by observations of recording environments, patterns of online circulation, archival sources, and indicators of platform based distribution. The findings indicate that …

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Rangsang Tuban by Padmasusastra offers a rich portrayal of Javanese social life through its depiction of traditions, religious practices, and ritual activities that shape the narrative and its characters. This study aims to examine the representation of Javanese religiosity and ritual in the novel and to explore its relevance to contemporary society. The novelty of this research lies in its analysis of ritual practices as expressions of Javanese religious syncretism, revealing interactions between formal religions and local spiritual traditions. Employing a qualitative descriptive method within a literary anthropology framework, this study analyzes textual data in the form of selected quotations …

To address complex environmental challenges like climate change and pollution, innovative Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions are essential. These technologies can help optimize resource use, reduce waste, and promote sustainable development. However, it's crucial to balance economic growth, social equity, and environmental protection when implementing green technologies. This survey paper systematically examines the landscape of Green Technology, focusing on its pivotal components: Measures of …
Time And Its Variations, Massira Serhir
Time And Its Variations, Massira Serhir
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
Numerous expressions relating to time underline the intentional character of man for grasping and controlling this phenomenon. However, despite the multiplicity and heterogeneity of these attempts, this notion remains as complex, diverse and often insufficiently defined. Moroccan Arabic offers two types of words of time: those characterized by their semantic uniqueness and others, on the other hand, which enjoy a semantic extension that goes from the most precise, from the most determined to the least determined. The purpose of this analysis is to highlight the impact of the human dimension in the semantic interpretation of linguistic expressions of time in …

Discontinuities And Dysfunctions In Verbal Production, Imane Chahdi
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This article outlines the main stages of speech production and inventories the types of errors that can disrupt oral communication, drawing on psycholinguistic research, particularly Eric Keller. It emphasizes that speaking—although seemingly effortless and continuous—relies on complex operations: message conceptualization, lexical selection, semantic and syntactic encoding, phonological and morphological encoding, and articulation. The paper reviews common error types (stuttering, repetitions, pauses, slips of the tongue) and discusses their effects on message transmission. It also shows how such errors provide useful evidence for understanding the organization of the mental lexicon and the mechanisms underlying language processing.
Proverb Translation As Cultural Translation, Rahma Barbara
Proverb Translation As Cultural Translation, Rahma Barbara
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This article analyzes the translation of Moroccan Arabic proverbs into French through the lens of cultural mediation. By postulating that « translating a proverb is translating a culture, » we explore the challenges posed by fixed units whose often metaphorical meaning is inseparable from specific sociocultural referents (rites, traditional trades, hagiographic figures). We demonstrate that the success of this operation requires moving beyond simple linguistic transcoding to adopt a semantic and pragmatic reinterpretation, integrating the context of enunciation and extralinguistic realities in order to preserve the identity of the source heritage while making it intelligible to the target reader
Dynamics Of Identity And Trajectories Of Memory: Interdisciplinary Perspectives On Intangible Cultural Heritage And Artistic Creation In The Maghreb, Nadia Kaaouas
Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)
This volume offers a multidisciplinary exploration of social and cultural dynamics in the Maghreb, capturing the tensions between permanence and change. Through a cross-disciplinary approach combining linguistics, anthropology, and aesthetics, the authors analyze the relationship between tradition and modernity through the lens of temporal perception, the evolution of women's status in discourse and literature, and the production mechanisms of visual arts. This reflection highlights the transmission processes of intangible heritage and the emergence of new, sovereign voices within a social space in full transition.

Saudi Medical Journal
Objective: Medical students frequently attend lectures without prior review of the related literature when preparing for examinations. It raises the question of whether studying the material in advance could enhance their learning outcomes during lectures.
Methods: A total of 102 medical students from a Saudi Arabian university took part in this research. Participants were assigned to one of 2 cohorts: one read a 4-page passage before a 15-minute lecture, while the other attended the lecture before reading the passage. Knowledge acquisition was measured using a test that assessed their ability to recall concepts administered 3 times—prior to the session, post …

Seeing Beyond The Words: What Interdisciplinary Methodologies Reveal About International Law, Matthew S. Erie, Mark Pollack, Wolfgang Alschner, Beth Simmons, Katerina Linos
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
INTRODUCTION: On April 24, 2025, the International Law and Social Science Interest Group debuted at the ASIL Annual Meeting with a panel that posed a deceptively simple question: how can social science tools advance the work of international lawyers? Chaired by Chantal Thomas, the session brought together Matthew Erie, Wolfgang Alschner, Beth Simmons, and Katerina Linos— scholars who bridge doctrinal and empirical inquiry—to show how ethnography, computational text analysis, counterfactual inference, and mixed-method design can illuminate legal puzzles that doctrine alone cannot solve. The four short essays in this symposium provide parallel illustrations of this core theme: Erie’s ethnographic approach …

Hyperbolic claims that SLA is in crisis (!), that a unifying theory is overdue, or that research must be oriented toward pedagogy have resurfaced once again—most recently in the response by Lantolf et al. (2025) to the Special Issue on Synergies in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLA/T) (Atkinson et al., 2025). Our own position is diametrically opposed to such claims.

2020-Current year OA Pubs
INTRODUCTION: Persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) affects up to 15% of patients after major surgery, impairing physical function, quality of life and increasing risk for long-term opioid use. Current PPSP prediction models rely on static or retrospective data and fail to incorporate dynamic perioperative factors. The Personalised Prediction of Persistent Postsurgical Pain (P5) study aims to develop individualised, multimodal prediction models by integrating preoperative behavioural, psychophysical and neurocognitive assessments and high-frequency symptom monitoring.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: P5 is a prospective, single-centre cohort study enrolling 2500 adults aged 18-75 undergoing major surgery at a tertiary academic hospital. Participants complete baseline surveys, cognitive …

Large Language Model (Llm) – Agent System For Register Transfer Level (Rtl) Transformation, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
The technology described in this paper relates to transformation of functional register-transfer level (RTL) hardware designs for implementation by electronic design automation (EDA) physical synthesis tools. An intelligent, autonomous, and self-correcting RTL transformation system that is based on large language models (LLMs) is proposed. The system includes an LLM agent that is based on one or more LLM models, and a robust closed-loop transformation validation agent that is integrated with the LLM agent. A continuous feedback loop is used to allow the agent for RTL transformation validation to provide feedback to the LLM agent as error messages. The LLM interprets …
