An Intelligent Quality-Based Approach To Fusing Multi-Source Probabilistic Information, Ronald R. Yager, Fred Petry Jan 2016

An Intelligent Quality-Based Approach To Fusing Multi-Source Probabilistic Information, Ronald R. Yager, Fred Petry

United States Navy: Publications

Our objective here is to obtain quality-fused values from multiple sources of probabilistic distributions, where quality is related to the lack of uncertainty in the fused value and the use of credible sources. We first introduce a vector representation for a probability distribution. With the aid of the Gini formulation of entropy, we show how the norm of the vector provides a measure of the certainty, i.e., information, associated with a probability distribution. We look at two special cases of fusion for source inputs those that are maximally uncertain and certain. We provide a measure of credibility associated with subsets …

Nys Success And Sustaining Systems Of Care, Center For Human Services Research, University At Albany

Behavioral Health Services Reports and Research Briefs

Funders, service providers, stakeholders, and community members often have a shared desire for activities and ideas to be sustained beyond the period of grant funding. Sometimes, along with this desire is confusion over the best route to sustainability, and how practices can be optimized to ensure sustainability.

The purpose of this research brief is to provide information for stakeholders to optimize the likelihood of sustaining successful practices and collaborative relationships that were developed through NYS Success. The research brief begins with a literature review on sustainability followed by findings from stakeholder focus groups and interviews, highlighting what aspects of Systems …

Fuzzy Control Of A Hyperloop Mass Transit System, Joseph D. Plantz Jan 2016

Fuzzy Control Of A Hyperloop Mass Transit System, Joseph D. Plantz

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Fuzzy logic control of a Hyperloop is carried out in this thesis. Hyperloop is being described hypothetically as a fifth mode of mass transportation and is a registered trademark of Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX). To inspire others to help in its development and make it a reality, the Hyperloop is being explored as open-source technology by SpaceX. In this thesis a near friction-less track is constructed and is fixed inside a tunnel. External fans are used to produce air pressure inside the tunnel to propel the vehicle down the track. Fuzzy Logic Control is used to stop the vehicle …

Predicting Speech Intelligibility Decline In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Based On The Deterioration Of Individual Speech Subsystems, Panying Rong, Yana Yunusova, Jun Wang, Lorne Zinman, Gary Pattee, James D. Berry, Bridget Perry, Jordan R. Green Jan 2016

Predicting Speech Intelligibility Decline In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Based On The Deterioration Of Individual Speech Subsystems, Panying Rong, Yana Yunusova, Jun Wang, Lorne Zinman, Gary Pattee, James D. Berry, Bridget Perry, Jordan R. Green

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Purpose To determine the mechanisms of speech intelligibility impairment due to neurologic impairments, intelligibility decline was modeled as a function of co-occurring changes in the articulatory, resonatory, phonatory, and respiratory subsystems.

Method Sixty-six individuals diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were studied longitudinally. The disease-related changes in articulatory, resonatory, phonatory, and respiratory subsystems were quantified using multiple instrumental measures, which were subjected to a principal component analysis and mixed effects models to derive a set of speech subsystem predictors. A stepwise approach was used to select the best set of subsystem predictors to model the overall decline in intelligibility.

Contextualizing Family Food Decisions: The Role Of Household Characteristics, Neighborhood Deprivation, And Local Food Environments, Sarah Bowen, Richelle Winkler, J. Dara Bloom, Lillian Macnell

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

We employ multilevel models with neighborhood and state effects (fixed effects and random effects) to analyze the associations between household characteristics, neighborhood characteristics, regional attributes and dietary quality. We use data from the USDA National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey. Our dependent variable is a Healthy Eating Index that incorporates dollars spent and amount of food in several categories. Key explanatory variables at the household level include variables household financial condition, housing burden, home ownership, car access, household size. We include a variable for the number of large food stores in the neighborhood, a neighborhood deprivation index, and a …

The Deep Patterns Of Campaign Finance Law, Jacob Eisler Jan 2016

The Deep Patterns Of Campaign Finance Law, Jacob Eisler

Scholarly Publications

Why has American campaign finance law long suffered from doctrinal confusion and sparked bitter ideological conflict? This Article demonstrates that these attributes are rooted in a judicial dispute over the cognitive and social characteristics of central actors in elections. The Article unpacks the foundations of campaign finance law through a multi-tiered analysis of case texts. It first explicates the doctrinal deficiencies that riddle the Supreme Court's campaign finance jurisprudence. These flaws reflect the Court's clumsy engagement with democratic theory, which has been an unrecognized driver of campaign finance law and the wellspring of the partisan dispute. Conservatives assert that the …

Experiences Learning English: A Case Study Of Adult Immigrants In Portland, Maine, Usa, Pamela L. Kasabian

MA TESOL Collection

The paper examines the process of English language acquisition for adult immigrants living in Portland, Maine, USA. The focus is on the process of language acquisition and integration into a new linguistic culture through analysis of personally narrated experiences of adult immigrants living in Portland, Maine. It seeks to expose similarities within highly individualistic linguistic journeys that contribute to investment and engagement in learning. In reviewing the data generated by the interviews, I hope to find situations to more deeply explore that could influence a more reciprocal learning culture for the mutual benefit of the language learner and the community …

David E. Bokovoy. Authoring The Old Testament: Genesis–Deuteronomy. Salt Lake City: Greg Kofford Books, 2014., Alex Douglas

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

David Bokovoy’s most recent book, Authoring the Old Testament: Genesis–Deuteronomy, represents a fresh and much-needed perspective on how Latter-day Saints can simultaneously embrace both scholarship and faith. This book is the first in what is anticipated to be a three-volume set exploring issues of authorship in the Old Testament published by Bokovoy with Greg Kofford Books. Bokovoy uses current scholarship on the Pentateuch as a springboard for discussing LDS perspectives on scripture, revelation, and cultural influence. To my knowledge, this is the first book-length attempt to popularize the classical Documentary Hypothesis among Latter-day Saints, and Bokovoy does an exemplary job …

How Often Are Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Said To “Evolve” In The News?, Nina Singh, Matthew T. Sit, Deanna M. Chung, Ana A. Lopez, Ranil Weerackoon, Pamela J. Yeh Jan 2016

How Often Are Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Said To “Evolve” In The News?, Nina Singh, Matthew T. Sit, Deanna M. Chung, Ana A. Lopez, Ranil Weerackoon, Pamela J. Yeh

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Media plays an important role in informing the general public about scientific ideas. We examine whether the word “evolve,” sometimes considered controversial by the general public, is frequently used in the popular press. Specifically, we ask how often articles discussing antibiotic resistance use the word “evolve” (or its lexemes) as opposed to alternative terms such as “emerge” or “develop.” We chose the topic of antibiotic resistance because it is a medically important issue; bacterial evolution is a central player in human morbidity and mortality. We focused on the most widely-distributed newspapers written in English in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, …

Tongues As A Site Of Subversion: An Analysis From The Perspective Of Postcolonial Politics Of Language, Ekaputra Tupamahu Jan 2016

Tongues As A Site Of Subversion: An Analysis From The Perspective Of Postcolonial Politics Of Language, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

In this article I discuss the close relationship between colonialism and the expansion of language. Language is always politically contested. A language can become an international language today because it has a long history of colonization and subjugation of other groups of people. I analyze the sociopolitical dimension of tongues by engaging, among others, linguist Roman Jakobson, philosopher Michel Foucault, and cultural theorist Judith Butler. By placing tongues in the context of the politics of language, I aim to show that the practice of speaking in tongues can be viewed as a strategic subversion and disruption of the regime of …

Speaking Of Urgent Care Centers: Language Matters, Sayeedul Islam, Michael H. Chetta, Andrzej Kozikowski, Samantha Misner

Department of Behavioral Science Publications and Research

With the adoption of the Affordable Care Act, it is necessary for health care facilities to focus on patient perceptions and care experience. The urgent care industry has grown exponentially as demand for more accessible patient services has increased. There is little research on how patients perceive their care experiences and what influences their satisfaction in the urgent care setting. The present study proposes a series of research questions exploring the relationship between language and ratings of urgent care facilities. This study aimed to: (1) identify which words were tied to patient experience, (2) identify the language used by satisfied …

This study explores how ESL student perceptions guide their use of online resources, with the goal of helping teachers select meaningful resources. Data were collected using a combination of interview responses and computer-recorded online actions. An evaluation of three case studies of advanced adult English language learners were used to gain insights into student perceptions. The results indicated that the ESL students use Google and native language sites when researching online, at times alternating between English and their native language. However, they expressed a sense of shame when using native language sites, as one student stated that he felt he …

Comics And Linguistics, Frank Bramlett Jan 2016

Comics And Linguistics, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

However we define comics, it is safe to claim that in general they consist of two main components: images and language. With some exceptions, the vast majority of comics include linguistic elements: speech balloons, thought balloons, narrative boxes, sound effects, and ambient language (language used in the background, as on store fronts, t-shirts, restaurant menus, and the like). Comics scholarship examines the language used in comics to say something about narrative, character development, even the nature of comics themselves. And while fitful linguistic analysis of comics began in the early 20th century, only recently has the academic discipline of …

Loyalty And Deference At Oral Arguments: An Empirical Examination Of How Supreme Court Justices Treat Solicitors General, Amanda C. Bryan, Charles Gregory, Timothy R. Johnson Jan 2016

Loyalty And Deference At Oral Arguments: An Empirical Examination Of How Supreme Court Justices Treat Solicitors General, Amanda C. Bryan, Charles Gregory, Timothy R. Johnson

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

It is well documented that when the Office of the Solicitor General argues before the United States Supreme Court it is widely successful. Scholars have taken this success as evidence that the Court is deferential to the Solicitor General’s office. This Article argues, however, that success is not synonymous with deference. Instead, by examining how the Justices treat the Solicitor General and deputies, this Article develops a more nuanced measure of deference to explain how and why the Court treats the Solicitor General differently than it treats other attorneys who appear before the nation’s highest court. This Article uses this …

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The purpose of this volume is to consider how trust research, particularly trust in institutions, might benefit from increased inter- or transdisciplinarity. In this introductory chapter, we first give some background on prior disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary work relating to trust. Next, we describe how this manydisciplined volume on institutional trust emerged from the joint activities of the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation and a National Science Foundation-funded Workshop on institutional trust. This chapter describes some of the themes that emerged, while also providing an overview of the rest of the volume, which includes chapters that discuss conceptualizations, definitions, and measurement …

Agency Theory: Toward A Framework For Research In The Public’S Support For And Understanding Of Science, Peter Muhlberger, Lisa M. Pytlikzillig Jan 2016

Agency Theory: Toward A Framework For Research In The Public’S Support For And Understanding Of Science, Peter Muhlberger, Lisa M. Pytlikzillig

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Public understanding of science and public engagement around science policy issues takes place within a complex system involving public opinion, values, identities, social groups, media, and social, economic, and political structures and influences. This paper offers a theory of agency that bridges the psychological and sociological and thereby offers a theoretical framework for understanding the system underlying public understanding of science, support for science, and the implications of public engagement. Agency theory integrates elements of well-established social science theories into an understanding of human agency. Strategies for improved public engagement are discussed.

Creating Digital Humanities: Faculty-Library Partnerships In Humanities Knowledge Creation, D. Russell Bailey

Library Faculty and Staff papers

As the title indicates, the themes of this paper are both process/es (creating) and product/s (digital humanities). We digitize humanities resources and make them (together with born-digital materials) openly available in maximally usable, manipulable collections. Faculty-library partnerships provide robust, impactful mechanisms and models for creating digital humanities resources for teaching, learning and research (TLR).

Comparison Of Formulations Of Applied Tasks With Interval, Fuzzy Set And Probability Approaches, Boris Kovalerchuk, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2016

Comparison Of Formulations Of Applied Tasks With Interval, Fuzzy Set And Probability Approaches, Boris Kovalerchuk, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The focus of this paper is to clarify the concepts of solutions in linear equations in interval, probabilistic and fuzzy sets setting for real word tasks. There is a fundamental difference between formal definitions of the solutions and physically meaningful concept of solution in applied tasks when equations have uncertain components. For instance, a formal definition of the solution in terms of Moore interval analysis can be completely irrelevant for solving a real world task. We show that formal definitions must follow meaningful concept of the solution in the real world. The paper proposed several formalized definitions of the concept …
