All Works

Introduction: The observation of the lunar crescent is significant in astronomy, cultural traditions, and religious lunar calendar determinations. However, earth-based imaging that captures all lunar phases, particularly the new crescent across multiple months, remains limited. This study explores the feasibility of using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to detect and analyze the birth of the new lunar crescent using space-borne imagery from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), spanning over 13 years. Methods: This study evaluates both deep learning and traditional machine learning approaches for new crescent detection. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Random Forests (RF), and Support Vector Machines (SVM) were applied …

Perceptions Of Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Among Indian Migrants In Australia: A Qualitative Study, Kunwar Kaur, Ma'en Zaid Abu-Qamar, Amineh Rashidi, Nilufeur Mckay, Rosemary Saunders

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) is a global health issue, with people of Indian origin facing earlier onset and more severe cases, leading to higher mortality at younger ages compared to Western countries. Indian migrants maintain similar risks post-migration. Managing modifiable risk factors and improving risk knowledge and health-seeking behaviours are essential, but research on IHD risk perceptions among Indian migrants is limited. Aim: This study explores how first-generation Indian migrants perceive their IHD risk and the factors influencing these perceptions. Methods: As a component of a mixed- method study, a qualitative descriptive study design was employed to examine study …

Coordinated Management Of Meaning In U.S.-Russia Relations: How Meanings Shaped Communication Surrounding The Potential Invasion Of Ukraine, Russell James Hampsey Feb 2026

Coordinated Management Of Meaning In U.S.-Russia Relations: How Meanings Shaped Communication Surrounding The Potential Invasion Of Ukraine, Russell James Hampsey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This qualitative discourse analysis applies the coordinated management of meaning theory to examine the diplomatic interactions between the United States and Russia from November 2021 to February 2022, the critical negotiation period preceding the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Systematically applying the theory’s hierarchy of meanings model to the official discourse resulted in the segmentation of 1,428 official texts for analysis. Comparative coding of the data exposes how worldviews and recursive feedback patterns shape adversarial postures, perpetuate negotiation impasses, and prevent the emergence of co-constructed meaning. This research illuminates how national meanings are actively constructed and maintained through discursive interaction, reinforcing …

Tunable Multi-Stage Query-Based Protocol For Personalized Content Recommendations, Animesh Sinha, Jital Patel, Akshay Gaur Feb 2026

Tunable Multi-Stage Query-Based Protocol For Personalized Content Recommendations, Animesh Sinha, Jital Patel, Akshay Gaur

Defensive Publications Series

Content recommendation systems rely on user-behavior statistics to model preferences. These systems must be engineered to handle an ever-growing corpus of documents, a vast user base, and sparse signals for inferring latent interests. Additionally, they face significant challenges in determining the appropriate dimensionality and granularity for interest modeling. To produce high-quality systems that function at web-scale, it is essential to leverage global semantic knowledge. Conventionally, this is achieved through various embedding and tagging systems that provide a foundational vocabulary for interest modeling. In this work, we propose a multi-stage, query-based architecture that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to learn high-quality …

Beyond Rationality: The Role Of Emotions In Communicative Planning, Minji Cho Feb 2026

Beyond Rationality: The Role Of Emotions In Communicative Planning, Minji Cho

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The impact of emotional dynamics has been overlooked within the field of planning. Traditional communicative planning theory, rooted in Habermas’ model of communication, typically propose that emotions should be managed to facilitate rational discussions that lead to logical agreements. Conversely, some research contends that emotions are not illogical or hazardous elements to be restrained during deliberation; instead, they are a topic requiring thorough investigation to create improved public forums. We investigate this tension by analysing facework during a land-use dispute at at the Gongjin Elementary School site in Seoul, South Korea. Our analysis reveals that facework not only impedes the …

In various higher education contexts, MALL has proved its effectiveness in enhancing various linguistic skills, including grammar and vocabulary, while showing an increase in students’ motivation, autonomy, and engagement. However, research on MALL’s effectiveness and implementation in Egypt is limited. The main objective of this annotative bibliography is to explore how MALL effectively enhances university students’ vocabulary and grammar skills and fills the gap …

Artificial Intelligence In The Prosecution Of International Crimes, Marta Bo Feb 2026

Artificial Intelligence In The Prosecution Of International Crimes, Marta Bo

International Law Studies

International criminal prosecutions face growing evidentiary challenges due to the vast and heterogeneous digital material generated during conflicts, including user-generated videos, social media, and intercepted communications. This article examines the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting investigations and trials before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Rather than replacing judicial decision-making, AI can assist with specific tasks, particularly in establishing contextual elements and linkage evidence central to international crimes. The article explores three main areas: AI-driven biometric tools for facial and speech recognition; AI techniques for detecting patterns of violence and mapping command structures; and applications during trial proceedings, …

Un Extraño En Una Tierra Extraña: A Latino Debater’S Recollections Of The United Kingdom Debate Tour, Richard D. Pineda

Studies in Debate and Oratory

Through the lens of a first-time participant of the Committee on International Discussion and Debate Tour of the United Kingdom and Portugal in 1997, this autoethnography examines the values of the debate tour experience from my unique standpoint. Having been in competitive speech and debate for eight years at that point – from high school through college – the debate tour challenged many of my assumptions about the activity and my perspective on speech and debate as an experiential learning platform. Specifically, I examine the experience of being on the tour through the identity lens of a Latino debater and …

International Students In Early American Forensics: Notes On The History Of The U.S.-Japan Forensics Relationship During The Late 19th And Early 20th Centuries, Satoru Aonuma, Junya Morooka, Tomohiro Kanke

Studies in Debate and Oratory

Ending 215 years of “national seclusion,” in 1854, Japan ratified the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with the United States and opened its doors to the rest of the world. Because of this special bilateral relationship, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, more Japanese began traveling to the U.S. than to any other country. Focusing on young Japanese who went to the U.S. as students and participated in debate and oratorical education during this period, this essay will re-examine the history of the U.S.-Japan relationship in terms of academic debate and oratory. During this period, American …

Phase 1

Introduction

Large Language Models (LLMs) have rapidly entered consumer-facing health information platforms, yet their reliability for patient education remains uncertain. Otolaryngology involves complex surgical procedures where clear perioperative counseling is essential for patient understanding and safety. This project evaluates whether LLMs can provide accurate and readable answers to common perioperative questions for septoplasty and cochlear implant procedures. We hypothesized that LLMs would generate accurate responses with readability levels appropriate for patients, with ChatGPT performing best.

Methods

Two common pre-operative and two post-operative questions for septoplasty and cochlear implantation were converted into standardized prompts. Each prompt was submitted to ChatGPT-5.1 and …

Teaching The Science Of Reading Critically, Cheu-Jey Lee Feb 2026

Teaching The Science Of Reading Critically, Cheu-Jey Lee

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In light of the increasing popularity of the science of reading (SOR) and its influence on literacy education, this paper is concerned with how to teach SOR critically without embracing it blindly. The definition of SOR, along with its limitations, is presented first. Then, critical reading is argued to be missing in SOR and its broadened/improved variations. Finally, an instructional example is provided to illustrate how to teach SOR critically through a whole-part-whole hermeneutic reconstructive process. This example demonstrates that the foundational literacy skills emphasized in SOR and the critical reading skills fostered through the four dimensions of the critical …

Aquatic Interrelations In Malika Mokeddem’S Novel N’Zid (2001), Laura C. Klein Feb 2026

Aquatic Interrelations In Malika Mokeddem’S Novel N’Zid (2001), Laura C. Klein

Green Humanities: A Journal of Ecological Thought in Literature, Philosophy & the Arts

This article offers an ecological analysis of Malika Mokeddem's novel N'Zid (2001), moving beyond postcolonial and anthropocentric interpretations. It centers on the protagonist Nora's individuation, arguing this process is intrinsically linked to her evolving relationship with the aquatic environment from which she emerges. The article aims to situate N'Zid within an ecological perspective, particularly relevant in the Anthropocene, an era compelling a reassessment of humanity's place. Echoing Bruno Latour, addressing inter-relationality is essential as the stable physical framework of the Moderns becomes unstable. This view necessitates rethinking environmental issues and encourages a scientific interpretation of the novel, drawing on neurosciences, …

Who Gets A Seat At The Table? Stakeholder Participation In Sec Rulemaking, Yuliya Guseva, Irena Hutton, Adam C. Pritchard, Joseph Grundfest Feb 2026

Who Gets A Seat At The Table? Stakeholder Participation In Sec Rulemaking, Yuliya Guseva, Irena Hutton, Adam C. Pritchard, Joseph Grundfest

Law & Economics Working Papers

We study how public participation shapes financial regulation using a novel dataset of 453 SEC rules proposed between 1995 and 2024. We collect over 81,000 public comments and 5,600 meetings between regulators and stakeholders related to those rules. Using large language models, we identify participants and extract structured measures of comment content and tone. We document asymmetries in stakeholder participation: retail investors dominate comment volume with shorter submissions, while institutional actors engage primarily through detailed comments and meetings with the SEC officials. Input from sophisticated stakeholders is more likely to be incorporated into the final rule release and informs rule …

Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan Feb 2026

Are Animals “It”? Restoring Animals In Our Language, Gaizel Arguelles Adan

Landas

This essay examines how language marginalizes animals by reducing them to “it,” obscuring their cognition, agency, communication, empathy, and giftedness. Such linguistic marginalization intersects with metaphors and colloquialisms that demean both women and animals and is reinforced by anthropocentric philosophical and theological traditions. While Thomistic thought has often emphasized human superiority, Thomas Aquinas also presents animals as participants in God’s community of creation who reveal divine goodness and glory. Drawing on animal reciprocity and feminist animal care, particularly entangled empathy, this essay proposes an ethic that recognizes animals in their wholeness and uniqueness. Naming becomes a countercultural practice that resists …

The Role Of The Cosmic Christ In God’S Universal Salvific Plan: An Assessment Of Michael Amaladoss’ Christology, Manuel V. Francisco Feb 2026

The Role Of The Cosmic Christ In God’S Universal Salvific Plan: An Assessment Of Michael Amaladoss’ Christology, Manuel V. Francisco

Landas

This paper examines Michael Amaladoss’s Christology, particularly his understanding of the Cosmic Christ within God’s universal salvific plan. Situated within Indian contextual theology and religious pluralism, it explores his use of Advaitic philosophy, symbolic hermeneutics, and dialogical theology in relating Christianity to other religions. Amaladoss maintains that God’s salvific activity extends beyond the historical Christ-event and is mediated through diverse religious traditions. His distinction, without separation, between the historical Jesus and the Cosmic Christ emphasizes Christ’s universal presence beyond and within the incarnation. The paper critically assesses these claims in light of Chalcedonian Christology, Vatican II, and Dominus Iesus, highlighting …

Tensions In Translating: The Case Of The Misa Ng Bayang Pilipino, Teofilo Giovan S. Pugeda Iii Feb 2026

Tensions In Translating: The Case Of The Misa Ng Bayang Pilipino, Teofilo Giovan S. Pugeda Iii

Landas

The Misa ng Bayang Pilipino (MBP) is an attempt at liturgical inculturation. Yet the inaction of the Roman Curia in the 1990s regarding the MBP is partly explainable by the MBP's use of the dynamic equivalence theory of translation and inculturated expression at a moment when norms on translation promoted by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments were shifting towards the formal equivalence theory. As a result, it appears that the MBP came into tension with the policy changes for liturgical translation at the time. In a certain way, the translational differences between the MBP …

The Status Of Societies Of Apostolic Life. A Canonical Overview: From The Code Of 1917 To Vatican Ii, Arnaud Touré

Landas

This article is the second in a series on societies of apostolic life published in Landas. While the first article provided a historiographical account of the history of societies of apostolic life, that is, the fundamental circumstances and reasons underlying the creation of such societies, in this second article, the topic is addressed from the canonical aspect. It examines the canonical status of societies of apostolic life, beginning with the drafting process that led to canon 673 of the 1917 Code. It then explores the characteristics of these societies as outlined in that Code and in subsequent magisterial teachings up …
