The Traditional Food Of Migrants: Meat, Water, And Other Challenges For Dietary Advice. An Ethnography In Guanajuato, Mexico, Carolyn Smith-Morris Jan 2016

The Traditional Food Of Migrants: Meat, Water, And Other Challenges For Dietary Advice. An Ethnography In Guanajuato, Mexico, Carolyn Smith-Morris

Anthropology Research

The term “traditional diet” is used variously in public health and nutrition literature to refer to a substantial variety of foodways. Yet it is difficult to draw generalities about dietary tradition for specific ethnic groups. Given the strong association between migration and dietary change, it is particularly important that dietary advice for migrants be both accurate and specific. In this article, I examine the cultural construct of “traditional foods” through mixed method research on diet and foodways among rural farmers in Guanajuato, MX and migrants from this community to other Mexican and U.S. destinations. Findings reveal first, that quantitatively …

Empowering Teachers And Learners: Strategies To Maximise Curriculum Potential And Counter Disadvantage In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Through The Khanyisa Initiative, M Maher, J Seach

Education Papers and Journal Articles

This paper first provides a discussion on disadvantage and what that means in an educational context. It then proposes a theoretical conceptualisation of curriculum highlighting that curriculum advantages some learners more than others on several levels. Finally, discussion then turns to an evaluative study of an initiative that is ongoing in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, involving disadvantaged learners and their teachers in under-resourced schools. Key findings from the study include effective ways the initiative found (a) to assist teachers in disadvantaged schools to keep abreast of changes to curriculum; (b) to empower teachers to promote their learners’ capacity to access the …

Enhanced Control Of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Neurophysiology With Real-Time Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Rt-Fmri) Neurofeedback Training And Working Memory Practice, Matthew Sherwood, Jessica Kane, Michael Patrick Weisend, Jason G. Parker Jan 2016

Enhanced Control Of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex Neurophysiology With Real-Time Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Rt-Fmri) Neurofeedback Training And Working Memory Practice, Matthew Sherwood, Jessica Kane, Michael Patrick Weisend, Jason G. Parker

Wright State Research Institute Publications

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) neurofeedback can be used to train localized, conscious regulation of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals. As a therapeutic technique, rt-fMRI neurofeedback reduces the symptoms of a variety of neurologic disorders. To date, few studies have investigated the use of self-regulation training using rt-fMRI neurofeedback to enhance cognitive performance. This work investigates the utility of rt-fMRI neurofeedback as a tool to enhance human cognition by training healthy individuals to consciously control activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). A cohort of 18 healthy participants in the experimental group underwent rt-fMRI neurofeedback from the left …

Automatic Data Understanding: The Tool For Intelligent Man-Machine Communication, Wladyslaw Homenda, Witold Pedrycz Jan 2016

Automatic Data Understanding: The Tool For Intelligent Man-Machine Communication, Wladyslaw Homenda, Witold Pedrycz

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The paper is focused on man-machine communication, which is perceived in terms of data exchange. Understanding data being exchanged is the fundamental property of intelligent communication. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the paradigm of intelligent data understanding. The paradigm stems from syntactic and semantic characterization of data and is soundly based on the paradigm of granular structuring of data and computation. The paper does not introduce a formal theory of intelligent data understanding. Instead this paradigm as well as notions of granularity, semantics and syntax are cast within the domain of music information. The domain immersion …

Dissertation Presentation: Teacher Efficacy And Culturally Responsive Teaching Techniques, Dr. Roberta Callaway Jan 2016

Dissertation Presentation: Teacher Efficacy And Culturally Responsive Teaching Techniques, Dr. Roberta Callaway

Center for Innovative Leadership Development Summer Seminar Presentations

Teachers who believe in their ability to create meaningful learning experiences exert a powerful influence over the achievement of the students they come in contact with. Educators are currently being confronted with increasing numbers of minority students in their classrooms; in order to engage these students, issues of diversity need to be a central part of instruction. Using Villegas and Lucas's (2002) six qualities that define a culturally responsive teacher and Ball's (2009) process for preparing teachers to be effective in cul-turally diverse classrooms. We'll examine theories and best practices, which can be used to create a safe classroom space …

Asian American Women Faculty: Stereotypes And Triumphs, Celeste Fowles Nguyen Jan 2016

Asian American Women Faculty: Stereotypes And Triumphs, Celeste Fowles Nguyen

Listening to the Voices: Multi-ethnic Women in Education

"Asian American women are a small but growing population of higher education faculty in the United States. In 1980–81, there were 252 female Asian full professors in the United States, which increased to 1, 267 in 1999–2000 (Hune, 2006, p. 28). Of all Asian Pacific American faculty, 19% were female in 1979–80, and 30% were female in 1999–2000. Asian American women faculty work primarily at the junior level, and are less likely than Asian Pacific American men to hold tenure (Hune, 2006, p. 28). The statistics give a general overview of Asian American women in the academy, but the individual …

Campus Climate And Coalition Building For Faculty Of Color, Stephanie H. Carlos

Listening to the Voices: Multi-ethnic Women in Education

"It is common practice for colleges and universities to tout the diversity of their faculty, staff, and students in marketing materials and mission statements, but one must look beyond the shiny veneer of websites and brochures to understand the daily challenges faculty of color face in academia. In 2000, people of color comprised only 12.9% of full-time faculty (Diggs, Garrison-Wade, Estrada, & Galindo, 2009). The texts Faculty of Color: Teaching in Predominantly White Colleges and Universities, edited by Stanley, and Women of Color in the White Classroom, edited by Vargas, are collections of reflections by faculty members of color on …

Better Use Case Diagrams By Using Work System Snapshots, Narasimha Bolloju, Steven Alter Jan 2016

Better Use Case Diagrams By Using Work System Snapshots, Narasimha Bolloju, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Research to date shows significant variability in the success of applying the common technique of use case diagramming for identifying information system scope in terms of use cases performed by actors interacting with an information system or performed automatically by the information system. The current research tests a) the benefits of using a work system snapshot, a basic analytical tool from the work system method, before producing use case diagrams, and b) the additional benefits of enhancing use case diagramming constructs to distinguish between automated activities, activities supported by the information system, and relevant manual activities. Teams of student subjects …

Acculturation And Bicultural Efficacy Effects On Chinese American Immigrants’ Diabetes And Health Management, Kevin M. Chun, Christine M.L. Kwan, L. A. Strycker, Catherine A. Chesla Jan 2016

Acculturation And Bicultural Efficacy Effects On Chinese American Immigrants’ Diabetes And Health Management, Kevin M. Chun, Christine M.L. Kwan, L. A. Strycker, Catherine A. Chesla

Psychology

The primary goal of this study was to examine effects of bicultural efficacy, or perceived confidence in dealing with bicultural acculturation stressors, on type 2 diabetes management and health for first-generation, Cantonese-speaking, Chinese American immigrants (N=162) recruited for a larger community-based diabetes intervention study (Chesla et al., 2013). The current study also tested whether a new Bicultural Efficacy in Health Management (BEFF-HM) scale is a more robust predictor of diabetes and health outcomes than proxy (years in the U.S.) and general acculturation measures. Hierarchical regression analyses of cross-sectional data revealed that high BEFF-HM was significantly related to positive outcomes on …

Quantification And Mapping Of Surface Residue Cover For Maize And Soybean Fields In South Central Nebraska, Vivek Sharma, Suat Irmak, Ayse Kilic, Vasudha Sharma, John E. Gilley, George Meyer, Stevan Z. Knezevic, D. B. Marx Jan 2016

Quantification And Mapping Of Surface Residue Cover For Maize And Soybean Fields In South Central Nebraska, Vivek Sharma, Suat Irmak, Ayse Kilic, Vasudha Sharma, John E. Gilley, George Meyer, Stevan Z. Knezevic, D. B. Marx

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The area cultivated under conservation tillage practices such as no-till and minimal tillage has recently increased in Midwestern states, including Nebraska. This increase, consequently, resulted in changes in some of the impacts of cropping systems on soil, such as enhancing soil and water quality, improving soil structure and infiltration, increasing water use efficiency, and promoting carbon sequestration. However, there are no methods currently available to quantify the percent crop residue cover (CRC) and the area under conservation tillage for maize and soybean at large scales on a continuous basis. This research used Landsat-7 (ETM+) and Landsat-8 (OLI) satellite data to …

Evidence For Anti-Intellectualism About Know-How From A Sentence Recognition Task, Ian Harmon, Zachary Horne Jan 2016

Evidence For Anti-Intellectualism About Know-How From A Sentence Recognition Task, Ian Harmon, Zachary Horne

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

An emerging trend in cognitive science is to explore central epistemological questions using psychological methods. Early work in this growing area of research has revealed that epistemologists' theories of knowledge diverge in various ways from the ways in which ordinary people think of knowledge. Reflecting the practices of epistemology as a whole, the vast majority of these studies have focused on the concept of propositional knowledge, or knowledge-that. Many philosophers, however, have argued that knowing how to do something is importantly different from knowing that something is the case. Hence, in this paper we turn our attention to people's concept …

Using Graphic Novels To Engage English Language Learners, Joellen Maples, Marie Cianca, Michael Maloy

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

Seen in America’s schools and elsewhere, the United States is experiencing a dramatic change in demographics. The national population, which was approximately 300 million in the year 2005, is expected to be more than 360 million by the year 2030 (Doorn and Schumm, 2013). As a result, the United States has experienced, and will continue to experience, a profound increase in racial and ethnic diversity.

Mutsun-English English-Mutsun Dictionary / Mutsun-Inkis Inkis-Mutsun Riica Pappel, Natasha Warner, Lynnika Butler, Quirina Geary

Mutsun Text Collection: mutsun riicakma hummen

Mutsun is a Costanoan language (part of the Utian language family) from California in the area around the modern towns of San Juan Bautista, Hollister, and Gilroy. The last fluent speaker of Mutsun, Mrs. Ascension Solarsano, died in 1930. Because of her work and the work of earlier native Mutsun speakers with early linguists, there is a large written corpus of Mutsun. This dictionary was compiled by analyzing that documentation. The dictionary is written to be useful both for language revitalization and for linguistic research. This PDF was downloaded from the Language Documentation & Conservation journal website at the request …

The Arizona Kith And Kin Project Evaluation, Brief #4, Eva Marie Shivers, Charles Yang, Flora Farago

Faculty Publications

Despite the prevalence of family, friend, and neighbor (FFN) child care (NSECE, 2015), relatively little is known about the characteristics of this type of care, quality of care, and the features of effective quality improvement initiatives for FFN care providers. In general, the early childhood field has remained relatively silent about FFN child care in policy and research discourses surrounding child well-being and quality initiatives (Shivers, 2012; Whitebook et al., 2004). The overall goal of the analyses described in this brief, Brief #4 in a series of four, was to explore and analyze FFN providers’ awareness and use of community …
