The Impact Of Dubai’S Architectural Wonders On The Daily Indigenous Performance In Light Of Cultural Modernity: A Comparative Case Study Between Burj Khalifa And Burj Al-Arab, Zulfat S. Al Kassim

Theses

In order to decrease the reliance on oil and create more economic opportunities, the UAE has witnessed a development boom over the last few decades in an effort to promote tourism. Dubai specifically has purposefully undergone dramatic architectural evolutions with the aim of transforming the city into a tourist hub and a global attraction. Over the last few years, iconic buildings including Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa have been built at different times to become prominent landmarks that promote the city’s global image and combine traditional/local elements in such a way as to form completely new unrecognizable forms i.e. …

The Effects Of Within-Country Linguistic And Religious Diversity On Foreign Acquisitions, Douglas Dow, Ilya Cuypers, Gokhan Ertug Apr 2016

The Effects Of Within-Country Linguistic And Religious Diversity On Foreign Acquisitions, Douglas Dow, Ilya Cuypers, Gokhan Ertug

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article explores how within-country diversity of both language and religion influences the ownership structure of foreign acquisitions. Commentators have acknowledged the potential importance of “within-country diversity,” but to date this issue has received minimal empirical attention. We propose that diversity plays two distinct roles. Namely, diversity within the host country may be an additional source of behavioral uncertainty and information asymmetry, over and above the effects arising from cross-national differences. Moreover, diversity within the home country may increase the cognitive complexity of the decision makers, moderating the firm’s response to the distance and diversity of the host country. Results …

Formations Of Indian Cinema In Dublin: A Participatory Researcher-Fan Ethnography, Giovanna Rampazzo Apr 2016

Formations Of Indian Cinema In Dublin: A Participatory Researcher-Fan Ethnography, Giovanna Rampazzo

Doctoral

This thesis explores emergent formations of Indian cinema in Dublin with a particular focus on globalising Bollywood film culture, offering a timely analysis of how Indian cinema circulates in the Irish capital in terms of consumption, exhibition, production and identity negotiation. The enhanced visibility of South Asian culture in the Irish context is testimony to on the one hand, the global expansion of Hindi cinema, and on the other, to the demographic expansion of the South Asian community in Ireland during the last decade. Through varying degrees of participant observation in and across sites of film production and consumption, alongside …

Starting Strong: Talent-Based Branching Of Newly Commissioned U.S. Army Officers, Michael J. Colarusso Dr., Kenneth G. Heckel Lieutenant Colonel, David S. Lyle Colonel, William L. Skimmyhorn Lieutenant Colonel Apr 2016

Starting Strong: Talent-Based Branching Of Newly Commissioned U.S. Army Officers, Michael J. Colarusso Dr., Kenneth G. Heckel Lieutenant Colonel, David S. Lyle Colonel, William L. Skimmyhorn Lieutenant Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Because the U.S. military's long-held advantage in physical capital and equipment is waning, cutting-edge human capital management is more critical than ever before. The authors of "Starting Strong" argue that by gathering detailed information on the unique talents possessed by each newly commissioned Army officer, as well as on the unique talent demands of each Army basic branch, the Army can create a "talent market" that identifies and liberates the strengths of every officer, aligning each with the career field where they are most likely to be engaged, productive, and satisfied leaders. Strong evidence demonstrates that this talent-based approach better …

Collaborative Development Of An Interdisciplinary Scientific Research Proposal: Negotiation Through Boundary Objects, Laura Emond Paganucci Apr 2016

Collaborative Development Of An Interdisciplinary Scientific Research Proposal: Negotiation Through Boundary Objects, Laura Emond Paganucci

English Theses & Dissertations

Funding agencies are increasingly soliciting proposals that require interdisciplinary and collaborative solutions for a scientific issue. The development of these research proposals is challenging and often problematic due to the complexity involved in integrating the differing characteristics of multiple disciplines to produce a single, cohesive document. Minimal research has been conducted to examine this collaborative process as it occurs. This study uses the concept of boundary objects as a framework to analyze an interdisciplinary and collaborative team during the development of a research proposal. Multiple methods were used to identify disciplinary differences and analyze their negotiations. This study delineated disciplinary …

Media Literacy Definitions, R. M. Wenner Apr 2016

Media Literacy Definitions, R. M. Wenner

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

This thesis conducts a critical discourse analysis on definitions of the term “media literacy” used by researchers in media literacy educational interventions. These definitions are compared to the skills developed in participants of media literacy interventions. This comparison reveals if and how researchers are operationalizing their stated definition of media literacy. Over half of researchers are using the definition proffered by the National Association for Media Literacy Education. However the disagreement in the field around a definition of the term “media literacy” has created confusion. This confusion has left educators falling back on practices scaffolded by the previous educational paradigm. …

Aristotle's Ink: Tattooing A New Understanding Of Invention In Collaborative Writing, Rachel L. Bragg Apr 2016

Aristotle's Ink: Tattooing A New Understanding Of Invention In Collaborative Writing, Rachel L. Bragg

English Theses & Dissertations

The field of writing studies continues to be expanded by new mediums of text and new methods of composing. Though rhetorical theory is recognized as being dynamic (Brooke, 2009; McKeon, 1987), it has yet to be remediated to fully account for texts composed collaboratively or visual rhetoric. This dissertation study explores the composing process of tattoos as an intersection of visual rhetoric, invention, and collaborative writing in order to provide to writing studies a remediation of the rhetorical canon of invention that accounts for visual texts composed collaboratively. Data collected included interviews with five tattoo artists and five clients, observations …

Governing The "Alien Threat": A Multilevel Analysis Of Punitiveness Toward Non-Citizen Federal Drug Offenders Across Time And Place, Melanie Marie Holland Apr 2016

Governing The "Alien Threat": A Multilevel Analysis Of Punitiveness Toward Non-Citizen Federal Drug Offenders Across Time And Place, Melanie Marie Holland

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Though frequently disadvantaged across a plethora of various institutions throughout history, noncitizens have become increasingly targeted with recent political rhetoric refocusing on immigration as a threat to homeland security. The latent effects of this renewed political platform has been a heightened awareness of the “immigration threat” that has infiltrated the criminal justice system.

Previous research has found that citizenship status is related to sentencing outcomes despite the identification of this variable as extralegal by the USSC, though research remains largely divided on the extent and manifestation of this disparity. Furthermore, only a very few of these studies have examined potential …

In The Blooming Red, Elaine White Apr 2016

In The Blooming Red, Elaine White

English Theses & Dissertations

My thesis is a hybrid text that incorporates both poems and nonfiction essays. It essentially functions as one very long, very unusual narrative. Though the works in the thesis incorporate multiple locations, both in the US and abroad, the manuscript begins and ends in central Indiana. The best way I can describe what happens in between to say it is an exploration of trauma, mental illness, and what healing sometimes looks like. Though much of what is contained here has been called “dark” and “visceral,” I don’t like to leave it at that. Instead, I see the potential for these …

Your Face Betrays You: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Lie To Me, Caroline Campbell Apr 2016

Your Face Betrays You: A Fantasy Theme Analysis Of Lie To Me, Caroline Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research concerning the consequences of edutainment has revealed that television shows have the capability to influence audience members. As the lines between education and entertainment are becoming increasingly blurred, viewers may not be aware of how watching such shows impacts them. Lie to Me is a popular edutainment television series that educates viewers about the power of micro expressions. Ekman has dedicated a large part of his life to the development of research related to micro expressions. The show’s main character, Cal Lightman, portrayed Paul Ekman’s special talents and knowledge through his ability to detect micro expressions. The first three …

A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei Apr 2016

A Borrowed Language, Yvonne Osei

Graduate School of Art Theses

Art has the potency of mediation: bridging human differences, questioning voids in historical trajectories, negotiating spaces of relevance, and most importantly, being signifiers that embody the absent. I speak in a borrowed language, a multilingual visual tongue, inspired by a culmination of Western and African Art modes of practices to create charged platforms for multicultural communication.

My art presents visual portals that allow for intercultural and interracial mingling as issues of colorism, present-day colonialism, gender inequality and the politics of dress are foregrounded for collective deliberation. The essence of the work is often activated and brought to its full potential …

Nom De Plume: Who Writes The Supreme Court's "By The Court" Judgments?, Peter Mccormick Apr 2016

Nom De Plume: Who Writes The Supreme Court's "By The Court" Judgments?, Peter Mccormick

Dalhousie Law Journal

For several dozen of its major decisions, the Supreme Court in recent decades has adopted an unusual judgment style-the unanimous and anonymous "By the Court" format. Unlike judgments attributed to specific justices, "By the Court" presents an unusual and impersonal institutionalist face. But what is happening behind the fagade? Are these deeply collegial products with the actual drafting divided between some (or most, or all) of the justices? Is it "business as usual" which for major judgments involves rotation between the senior judges? Or is it simply a pseudonym for the Chief Justice writing alone in an unusually emphatic way? …

Let Me Tell You A Story: A Journalist's Pursuit Of Redemptive Storytelling, Rachael Graf Apr 2016

Let Me Tell You A Story: A Journalist's Pursuit Of Redemptive Storytelling, Rachael Graf

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis will explore, and attempt to define, what redemptive storytelling is within the field of journalism. Storytelling is a practice as old as humanity itself. Indeed, it is ancient, originating in the mind of God, the author of the greatest story ever told. Books written by experts in the field of storytelling, as well as scholarly articles, will be utilized. Aside from journalism, aspects of psychology, theology, and philosophy will be included in the consideration of what makes a story redemptive. This thesis also probes the reasons why stories are so crucial to the human experience, and how God …

Transgressing Gender Normativity Through Gender Identity Development: Exploring Transgender, Non-Conforming, And Non-Binary Identities Of College Students, Enrique Tejada Iii Apr 2016

Transgressing Gender Normativity Through Gender Identity Development: Exploring Transgender, Non-Conforming, And Non-Binary Identities Of College Students, Enrique Tejada Iii

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study situates current gender social constructions as harmful, inhibitive, and problematic, especially for those that transgress gender boundaries and do not align with their gender assigned at birth. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to critically challenge and deconstruct the social construct of gender and its norms both within and outside of a college campus. This study works to achieve this purpose and answer research questions through careful analysis of the different gender journeys of three separate gender-diverse individuals. These participants’ stories are shared in a case-study format to recognize how each individual uniquely and personally formed their …

Perception And Production Of Phonetic Stress In Spanish: An Investigation Of Native Speakers And Non-Native Learners, Benjamin Stoltenberg, Elizabeth Enkin Apr 2016

Perception And Production Of Phonetic Stress In Spanish: An Investigation Of Native Speakers And Non-Native Learners, Benjamin Stoltenberg, Elizabeth Enkin

UCARE: Research Products

In recent years, foreign language studies have become an area of great interest, given that students must be prepared to take on a career in a globalized world. Consequently, there is a growing incentive to learn a second language, and especially Spanish given that it is the most-studied foreign language in the United States. Language courses designed for majors and minors generally center on the analysis and discussion of sounds, morphological processes and grammatical constructions. However, little is known about the nature of specific difficulties that may arise for native speakers of English when they interpret spoken speech in Spanish. …

Book Review: Robert Brandom, From Empiricism To Expressivism: Brandom Reads Sellars, Colin Mclear Apr 2016

Book Review: Robert Brandom, From Empiricism To Expressivism: Brandom Reads Sellars, Colin Mclear

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

One of the better known of the many bons mots of the Sellarsian corpus concerns his definition of philosophy: it is the attempt to understand “how things in the broadest possible sense of the term hang together in the broadest possible sense of the term.” When applied to Sellars’s philosophy in particular, one might be forgiven for doubting the possible success of such an endeavor. Richard Rorty once quipped of Sellars’s followers that they were either “left-wing” or “right-wing,” emphasizing one line of thought in Sellars’s work to the exclusion of the other. The two lines of thought to which …
