Closing The Achievement Gap In Mathematics For Students With Learning Disabilities Utilizing The Resource Room As An Intervention, Esta H. Brownstein

Theses and Dissertations

Students with learning disabilities are placed in general education classrooms in increasing numbers. Many of these students receive additional services in Resource Room programs taught by a special education teacher. The intent of this study was to determine if students with disabilities, who were struggling in mathematics, increased achievement utilizing Resource Room instruction as an intervention. Students in the study were in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades and performed at least one grade level below expectations for that grade in mathematics. All of the students had a specific learning disability. This study investigated the correlation, if any, between the amounts …

The Impact Of Teacher-Lead Professional Development Programs On The Self-Efficacy Of Veteran Teachers, Seth Powers, Theodore Kaniuka, Brian Phillips, Beverlyn Cain

Journal of Research Initiatives

This study examined the impact of a teacher-lead professional development program based on the Instructional Talk-Through (ITT) model, created to address the unique needs of high-performing veteran teachers. Focusing on the professional development of veteran teachers is not a regular occurrence in schools and it is our opinion that these teachers possess a wealth of knowledge that heretofore has not been utilized to improve their overall skill set. The program was designed to capitalize on peer coaching, professional learning communities, classroom observation, and experiential knowledge while incorporating the unique strengths and abilities of these teachers in a collaborative environment.

Multicultural Curriculum Designs In Counselor Education Programs: Enhancing Counselors-In-Training Openness To Diversity, Dorota Celinska, Roberto Swazo Dec 2016

Multicultural Curriculum Designs In Counselor Education Programs: Enhancing Counselors-In-Training Openness To Diversity, Dorota Celinska, Roberto Swazo

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Multicultural competencies are critical elements in both counselor preparation and practice. In accordance with the standards of the Council of Accredited Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), counselor education programs must implement multicultural competencies as one of core curriculum areas. Although research evidences the positive impact of multicultural training, it remains a challenge to establish which curriculum designs and pedagogical approaches are most effective. This study compares self-reported openness and comfort in interactions with diverse populations of 87 counselors-in-training across two distinct multicultural curriculum designs (i.e., single multicultural course vs. infusion through the curriculum) in a CACREP accredited counselor education …

Questionnaires were self-administered to 200 Chinese immigrants in San Francisco, USA. Questionnaires included demographics, culture factors (e.g., Perceived Susceptibility in General, Perceived Benefits of Western Medication, Perceived Benefits of Chinese Herbs, and Health-Related Social Support), and medications adherence. Participants' mean age was 70.6 (±10.3) years. Three stratification factors were identified for non-adherence: Lower Perceived Susceptibility in General, lower Perceived Benefit of Western Medications, and longer Length of Stay in the United States. The probability of non-adherence was …

From The Social Production Of The Person To Transnational Capitalism: Parsons, Turner, And Globalization, Daniel Reichman

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This paper focuses on influence of Talcott Parsons on the thought of Terence Turner, and explores how Turner's Brazilian ethnography led to a critical rethinking of Parsons' general theory of action. While Turner's adaptation of Marxian theory of value to anthropology is often read as a practice-oriented alternative to structuralism, I argue that it can also be fruitfully understood as a response to general theoretical questions first posed by Parsons. Late in his career, Turner published a series of papers on "globalization" which apply his Marxian analysis of the social production of the person in Amazonia to questions of citizenship …

Severing Ties: A Lacanian Reading Of Motherhood In Joyce Carol Oates’S Short Stories "The Children" And "Feral", Uroš Tomić Dec 2016

Severing Ties: A Lacanian Reading Of Motherhood In Joyce Carol Oates’S Short Stories "The Children" And "Feral", Uroš Tomić

Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies

This paper approaches two of Joyce Carol Oates’s short stories (“The Children” and “Feral”) from a Lacanian perspective on the tripartite structure of personality in an attempt to analyze questions of motherhood and the parent-child separation process. Although published 35 years apart both stories deal with mothers who have trouble containing their maternal attitude and children who become elusive entities for their parents. Utilizing as well the concept of what Oates has termed “realistic allegory” in the analysis of characters situated within highly specific settings and circumstances, the paper aims to shed light on Oates’s vision of the workings of …

A Caribbean Continuum Of Desire And Its Limits, Elena Machado Saez Dec 2016

A Caribbean Continuum Of Desire And Its Limits, Elena Machado Saez

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

For a rare and rigorous comparative analysis of how sex and sexuality function “as tools of pleasure and politics” in the Caribbean region and diaspora (1), critics must turn to Rosamond King’s Island Bodies: Transgressive Sexualities in the Caribbean Imagination (2014). King’s monograph is refreshing, not simply because of its focus on the Caribbean continuum of sexuality from the 1970s until the present, but because of its impressive comparative depth in terms of structure and content. The comparative approach adopted by Island Bodies achieves a balanced attention to the Caribbean diaspora and region, while also engaging popular culture, politics, and …

The Anxiety Of Racialized Sexuality In Jean Rhys, Yanoula Athanassakis Dec 2016

The Anxiety Of Racialized Sexuality In Jean Rhys, Yanoula Athanassakis

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

This article centers on Dominican-born Jean Rhys’s novel Good Morning, Midnight (1939). Rhys’s West Indian roots are often referenced and Anglicized both in terms of, and because of, her engagement with Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (vis-à-vis Wide Sargasso Sea). I argue that Good Morning, Midnight’s protagonist, Sasha Jensen, refracts the uniquely Caribbean experience of dislocation through the modernist aesthetic of detachment. Good Morning, Midnight is the last book in a series of four that Rhys published in a period of eleven years after World War I. The disturbingly ambiguous nature of her characters reveal the complex intersectionality of race …

The Rhyming Irons Of Abdur-Rahman Slade Hopkinson, Paul Thifault Dec 2016

The Rhyming Irons Of Abdur-Rahman Slade Hopkinson, Paul Thifault

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

Despite being a highly respected member of the Brathwaite-Walcott generation, Abdur-Rahman Slade Hopkinson has received only passing attention from scholars of West Indian literature. In an attempt to foster greater appreciation for a Caribbean artist recently dubbed “the forgotten poet” in his native Guyana, this article uncovers an organizing principle running through Snowscape with Signature (1993), a substantial posthumous selection of Hopkinson's poems that includes both secular and religious verses. The defining characteristic of Hopkinson’s poetry, I argue, involves his careful imbrication of competing notions of poetry as, on the one hand, a space for transcendent aesthetics and, on the …

Everyday Bat Vocalizations Contain Information About Emitter, Addressee, Context, And Behavior, Yosef Prat, Mor Taub, Yossi Yovel Dec 2016

Everyday Bat Vocalizations Contain Information About Emitter, Addressee, Context, And Behavior, Yosef Prat, Mor Taub, Yossi Yovel

KIP Articles

Animal vocal communication is often diverse and structured. Yet, the information concealed in animal vocalizations remains elusive. Several studies have shown that animal calls convey information about their emitter and the context. Often, these studies focus on specific types of calls, as it is rarely possible to probe an entire vocal repertoire at once. In this study, we continuously monitored Egyptian fruit bats for months, recording audio and video around-the-clock. We analyzed almost 15,000 vocalizations, which accompanied the everyday interactions of the bats, and were all directed toward specific individuals, rather than broadcast. We found that bat vocalizations carry ample …

Metacognitive Skills, Perfectionism, And Academic Self-Efficacy As Predicators Of Achievement Goal Orientations Among Sample Of Graduate Students In Education College, Khaled N. Alotaibi

International Journal for Research in Education

This study aimed toinvestigate the possibility of predicting achievement goal orientations from metacognitive skills, perfectionism, and academic self-efficacy among graduate students. The study sample consisted of 182 graduate students from the College of Education at King Saud University. In this study, four types of scales were used, namely the 2x2 Achievement Goal Orientation Scale developed by Elliot andMcGregor (2001) the Metacognitive Skills Scale developed by Al-Watban (2006), the Adaptive and Maladaptive Scale developed byFrostetet. al (1993) and the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale developed by Wood and Locke (1987). The results of the study revealed that there were significant impacts of metacognitive …

Frog Jump Plop! Translating And Interpreting The “Frog” Haiku By Matsuo Basho, Nathan Roy Dec 2016

Frog Jump Plop! Translating And Interpreting The “Frog” Haiku By Matsuo Basho, Nathan Roy

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Matsuo Basho’s (1644-1698) “Frog” haiku was originally written in Japanese in the 17th century, and has been translated into English over a hundred times using a multitude of different approaches. This simple poem consists of a mere three lines and six words, and yet each translation is unique; some are vastly different from others. Each translation essentially creates a different poem, which are more like offspring of the poem, rather than a direct rendering of the original. Since we cannot know what the author’s intentions were, as translators, we each have to make choices both in reading the original and …

Noticing The Extraordinary: Issues Related To Identifying The Gifted English Language Learners And Strategies For Educators To Support Them, Rebecca Hoover Dec 2016

Noticing The Extraordinary: Issues Related To Identifying The Gifted English Language Learners And Strategies For Educators To Support Them, Rebecca Hoover

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Language and cultural identity is not a measure of a child's academic ability, but the assumption that these constructs are related often exists among many people in our education system. Within the field of education, structural inequality and other factors have received considerable research and notice in recent years. Much of this research has been focused on the importance of multicultural education; however, English Language Learners (ELLs) have received minimal focus in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). There is still substantial disproportional recognition of ELLs and GATE students. Compared to other children, ELLs are exceedingly underrepresented in GATE programming. This …

Language Policy And The Preparedness Of Mainstream Teachers For Serving Els In K-12 Classrooms, Laureen A. Fregeau, Robert D. Leier Dec 2016

Language Policy And The Preparedness Of Mainstream Teachers For Serving Els In K-12 Classrooms, Laureen A. Fregeau, Robert D. Leier

TAPESTRY

English language learners (ELs) numbers are increasing steadily in classrooms across the United States. Some southeastern states have seen more than a 200% EL student increase in recent years (Migration Policy Institute, 2010). Since the inception of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and especially since Title I “flexibility” revisions, responsibility for educating ELs has shifted from ESOL and bilingual teachers to primarily mainstream teachers. States that have opted out of NCLB under flexibility revisions are no longer as accountable to the U. S. Department of Education for the education of ELs. States and school districts are no longer required to …

An Esol Curricular Model: Infuse Esol Standards In Teacher Education, Deborah L. Wheeler, Jane M. Govoni

TAPESTRY

Florida approved teacher preparation programs provide coursework in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) based on a mandate that began for graduates in 2004; however, there are few studies on the effects of an ESOL integrated model. The data show that an ESOL-infused program effectively prepares teacher candidates in demonstrating ESOL standards. The data were applied to a Likert scale and the results revealed that the program ranked between the ranges of average and exceeds expectations. The results will foster further research on a larger scale on ways to effectively prepare teacher candidates to work with English learners (ELs).

Accommodations And English Learners: Inconsistencies In Policies And Practice, Florin M. Mihai, N. Eleni Pappamihiel Dec 2016

Accommodations And English Learners: Inconsistencies In Policies And Practice, Florin M. Mihai, N. Eleni Pappamihiel

TAPESTRY

This article outlines the results of a survey of all the large-scale testing accommodations used with English learners across the United States, addressing the increasing challenge of integrating this population into a state’s accountability system in a valid and reliable manner. This examination of accommodation policies used in standardized content area assessments reveals that there is little consistency across states with regard to testing accommodations for ELs in providing accommodations when ELs are tested in academic content areas.

Literacy In Our Lives, Past, Present And Future: Exploring Digital Stories By Uae Pre-Service Teachers, Patience A. Sowa

TAPESTRY

The purpose of this research study was to examine how pre-service teachers in a college of education in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) used multimodal digital storytelling to explore their language and literacy learning experiences in Arabic and English. Twenty-one pre-service teachers participated in this qualitative study. Drawing on the digital stories, reflection papers and open-ended surveys as data, the study explored the pre-service teachers’ bilingual literacy language experiences and how they created their digital stories. Emerging themes included early experiences in language and literacy learning at home and at school, and expanded notions of literacy. The memoirs offered a …
