The Mediating Effects Of Autonomy, Competence, And Relatedness During Couple Leisure On The Relationship Between Total Couple Leisure Satisfaction And Marital Satisfaction, Miriam Puerta Amato, Neil Lundberg, Peter Ward, Bruce G. Schaalje, Ramon Zabriskie

Faculty Publications

This study tested Self-Determination Theory as a possible explanatory framework to understand the relationship between total couple leisure satisfaction and marital satisfaction. The three psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness—fundamental components of Self-Determination Theory—were measured through the Fulfillment of Psychological Needs during Couple Leisure (FPNL) scale and were tested as mediators. The analysis of five structural equation models confirmed the relevance of the Self-Determination Theory in explaining the relationship between couple leisure satisfaction and marital satisfaction. Although autonomy and competence were significant mediators, relatedness consistently appeared as the strongest mediator suggesting that the fulfillment of this psychological need is …

Day-Of-The-Week Effects In The Philippine Stock Exchange: Do They Exist Amid Modernization?, Cesar C. Rufino, Neriza M. Delfino Jan 2016

Day-Of-The-Week Effects In The Philippine Stock Exchange: Do They Exist Amid Modernization?, Cesar C. Rufino, Neriza M. Delfino

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Calendar seasonality in returns of financial markets represents interesting departure from their informational efficiency. This is especially true for the popular “day-of-the-week” effect often seen in the stock markets of even the most developed economies, when in certain days of the week, particularly Mondays, returns of equity assets appear to be lower as compared to other days of the week. As this anomaly presents a distinct challenge to the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), which has been demonstrated in the Philippine Stock Exchange during its still ongoing modernization period, the present study attempts to determine if this challenge exists in the …

Audited Quarterly Accounts And Earnings Response Coefficients, Mazrah Malek, Saidatunur Fauzi Saidin, Mohammad Noor Hisham Osman

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The production of quarterly accounts has become a mandatory requirement for listed companies in many countries. However, these accounts are not required to be audited in many jurisdictions, which expose these accounts to the risk of errors and manipulations. The purpose of this study is to examine the investors’ response towards auditor’s involvement in quarterly accounts. Analysis is based on matched pair sample of 60 listed companies in Bursa Malaysia in the year 2012. The result of the OLS regression shows that the earnings response coefficients of quarterly accounts that have been audited are statistically higher than those not audited. …

Toward A Model Of Traditional Retailers And Sellers Empowerment In Improving Competitiveness Against Modern Markets In Banyumas Region, Indonesia, Eko Suyono, Omar Al Farooque, Riswan Riswan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

With the rapid expansion of modern markets (i.e., supermarkets and minimarkets), traditional retail businesses are facing huge challenges in the Banyumas region, Central Java, Indonesia to survive and continue doing businesses. While modern markets are supported by huge number of resources, including unlimited funding, modern infrastructures, professional human resources, global networking, and so forth, traditional retailers and sellers lack these resources to compete with the new supermarkets and minimarkets. To promote populist economic system, the government’s role in terms of policies, education and training, and funding assistance are very important in supporting the sustainable development of these traditional businesses. The …

From Characterising Three Years Of Hri To Methodology And Reporting Recommendations, P Baxter, J Kennedy, E Senft, S Lemaignan, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research requires the integration and cooperation of multiple disciplines, technical and social, in order to make progress. In many cases using different motivations, each of these disciplines bring with them different assumptions and methodologies. We assess recent trends in the field of HRI by examining publications in the HRI conference over the past three years (over 100 full papers), and characterise them according to 14 categories. We focus primarily on aspects of methodology. From this, a series of practical recommendations based on rigorous guidelines from other research fields that have not yet become common practice in HRI …

What’S On The Inside Counts: A Grounded Account Of Concept Acquisition And Development, S Thill, K Twomey Jan 2016

What’S On The Inside Counts: A Grounded Account Of Concept Acquisition And Development, S Thill, K Twomey

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Understanding the factors which affect the age of acquisition (AoA) of words and concepts is fundamental to understanding cognitive development more broadly. Traditionally, studies of AoA have taken two approaches, either exploring the effect of linguistic variables such as input frequency (e.g., Naigles and Hoff-Ginsberg, 1998) or the semantics of the underlying concept, such as concreteness or imageability (e.g., Bird et al., 2001). Embodied theories of cognition, meanwhile, assume that concepts, even relatively abstract ones, can be grounded in the embodied experience. While the focus of such discussions has been mainly on grounding in external modalities, more recently some have …

New State Estimator For Decentralized Event-Triggered Consensus For Multi-Agent Systems, C Viel, S Bertrand, H Piet-Lahanier, M Kieffer

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper extends recent work of Garcia et al. on event-triggered communication to reach consensus in multi-agent systems. It proposes an improved agent state estimator as well as an estimator of the state estimation uncertainty to trigger communications. Convergence to consensus is studied. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed estimators in presence of state perturbations.

The Grammar Of Glamour Part 2: Part Of Portfolio The Grammar Of Glamour, I Rae Jan 2016

The Grammar Of Glamour Part 2: Part Of Portfolio The Grammar Of Glamour, I Rae

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The Grammar of Glamour; Part 2 explores the business of surface appearances through the use of imagery within independent businesses concerned with the manufacture of glamour. The intention is to ask how the spell of glamour can be broken. And at the same time how the power of material objects can transform the identity and status of those who own them. We cannot now begin to imagine what non-photographic glamour might be like, but we can ask what it represents within an economic, political, even philosophical, system. I want to look at hair salon interiors and specifically to the use …

Can’T Count Or Won’T Count? Embedding Quantitative Methods In Substantive Sociology Curricula: A Quasi-Experiment, Malcolm Williams, Luke Sloan, Sin Yi Cheung, Carole Sutton, Sebastian Stevens, Libby Runham Jan 2016

Can’T Count Or Won’T Count? Embedding Quantitative Methods In Substantive Sociology Curricula: A Quasi-Experiment, Malcolm Williams, Luke Sloan, Sin Yi Cheung, Carole Sutton, Sebastian Stevens, Libby Runham

Peninsula Medical School

This paper reports on a quasi-experiment in which quantitative methods (QM) are embedded within a substantive sociology module. Through measuring student attitudes before and after the intervention alongside control group comparisons, we illustrate the impact that embedding has on the student experience. Our findings are complex and even contradictory. Whilst the experimental group were less likely to be distrustful of statistics and appreciate how QM inform social research, they were also less confident about their statistical abilities, suggesting that through ‘doing’ quantitative sociology the experimental group are exposed to the intricacies of method and their optimism about their own abilities …

Effect Of Phenylephrine On The Accommodative System, Jj Esteve-Taboada, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, P Bernal-Molina, Et Al Jan 2016

Effect Of Phenylephrine On The Accommodative System, Jj Esteve-Taboada, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, P Bernal-Molina, Et Al

School of Health Professions

Accommodation is controlled by the action of the ciliary muscle and mediated primarily by parasympathetic input through postganglionic fibers that originate from neurons in the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia. During accommodation the pupil constricts to increase the depth of focus of the eye and improve retinal image quality. Researchers have traditionally faced the challenge of measuring the accommodative properties of the eye through a small pupil and thus have relied on pharmacological agents to dilate the pupil. Achieving pupil dilation (mydriasis) without affecting the accommodative ability of the eye (cycloplegia) could be useful in many clinical and research contexts. Phenylephrine …

Thomas (all children's names have been changed) is five and a half years old and has been diagnosed with visuoconstructive deficits. He is under the care of an occupational therapist and tries to work around his inability to draw letters in a consistent manner. Vincent is six and struggles at school with his poor handwriting and even poorer self-confidence. Whereas Thomas is lively and always quick at shifting his attention from one activity to another, Vincent is shy and poised. Two very different children, each one facing the same difficulty to write in a legible manner. Additionally, hidden beyond these …

Postpartum Regression Of A Presumed Cavernous Meningioma, See Yung Phang, Peter Whitfield Jan 2016

Postpartum Regression Of A Presumed Cavernous Meningioma, See Yung Phang, Peter Whitfield

Peninsula Medical School

Meningiomas are known to be more common in females than males. They are also known in rare cases to grow in size during pregnancy, which can complicate its management. We describe a 31-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with blurring of her vision and diplopia during the third trimester of her pregnancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a small left cavernous sinus meningioma. The patient was treated conservatively until her uncomplicated delivery. A postpartum MRI scan showed complete regression of the suspected meningioma. Currently the patient is contemplating a further pregnancy.

A Qualitative Study Of Diverse Providers' Behaviour In Response To Commissioners, Patients And Innovators In England: Research Protocol, Rod Sheaff, Joyce Halliday, Mark Exworthy, Pauline Allen, Russell Mannion, Sheena Asthana, Alex Gibson, Jonathan Clark

Peninsula Medical School

Introduction: The variety of organisations providing National Health Service (NHS)-funded services in England is growing. Besides NHS hospitals and general practitioners (GPs), they include corporations, social enterprises, voluntary organisations and others. The degree to which these organisational types vary, however, in the ways they manage and provide services and in the outcomes for service quality, patient experience and innovation, remains unclear. This research will help those who commission NHS services select among the different types of organisation for different tasks. Research questions: The main research questions are how organisationally diverse NHS-funded service providers vary in their responsiveness to patient choice, …

Changes In The Eeg Amplitude As A Biomarker For Early Detection Of Alzheimer's Disease., Ali H. Al-Nuaimi, Emmanuel Jammeh, Lingfen Sun, Emmanuel Ifeachor

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The rapid increase in the number of older people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia represents one of the major challenges to the health and social care systems. Early detection of AD makes it possible for patients to access appropriate services and to benefit from new treatments and therapies, as and when they become available. The onset of AD starts many years before the clinical symptoms become clear. A biomarker that can measure the brain changes in this period would be useful for early diagnosis of AD. Potentially, the electroencephalogram (EEG) can play a valuable role in …

Time To Move The Goalposts? Do We Need New Targets For Developing I.V. Anaesthetics?, J. R. Sneyd

More Faculty of Health Research

Time to move the goalposts? Do we need new targets for developing intravenous anaesthetics? Widespread use of intravenous hypnotics for induction of anaesthesia dates from 1934 when thiopentone was introduced. Since then a handful of agents have come and gone with only propofol and ketamine enjoying common use in addition to some residual administrations of thiopentone and etomidate, During the 30 years since propofol was introduced in 1986, number of candidate hypnotics and propofol reformulations have been evaluated but none have yet achieved commercial success or significant clinical impact. During this period developmental objectives built on the shortfalls of thiopentone …
