Eisenhower's Farewell Speech: Initial And Continuing Communication Effects, Bruce Kuiper Jan 2016

Eisenhower's Farewell Speech: Initial And Continuing Communication Effects, Bruce Kuiper

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

When Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered his final Presidential speech in 1961, he was using the opportunity to bid farewell to America, but he was also trying to warn his fellow countrymen about deeper challenges threatening the country. In this analysis, Eisenhower’s speech is examined in light of the impact it had on American culture, communication concepts, and political ramifications. The paper initially highlights the previous literature on the speech, especially in light of its 50th anniversary, and reveals a man whose main concern was how the speech’s words would affect his beloved country. The painstaking approach to the wording …

Student Performance In Curricula Centered On Simulation-Based Inference: A Preliminary Report, Beth Chance, Jimmy Wong, Nathan L. Tintle

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"Simulation-based inference"(e.g., bootstrapping and randomization tests) has been advocated recently with the goal of improving student understanding of statistical inference, as well as the statistical investigative process as a whole. Preliminary assessment data have been largely positive. This article describes the analysis of the first year of data from a multi-institution assessment effort by instructors using such an approach in a college-level introductory statistics course, some for the first time. We examine several pre-/post-measures of student attitudes and conceptual understanding of several topics in the introductory course. We highlight some patterns in the data, focusing on student level and instructor …

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Understanding the molecular pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is essential to identify therapeutic targets. A hepatitis B virus (HBV) related double transgenic murine model was developed. METHODS: Liver specific expression of HBV X protein (HBx) and insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1) was achieved and transgenic mice were followed from birth to age 21 months. Liver and tumor tissue were assessed for histologic changes as well as activation of signal transduction pathways by qRT-PCR and multiplex ELISA protein assays. RESULTS: Overexpression of HBx and IRS1 stimulates liver cell proliferation in the double transgenic mice. Only the male mice …

Pre-Service Teachers And Technology Integration: International Cases And Generational Attitudes Toward Technology In Education, David J. Mulder Jan 2016

Pre-Service Teachers And Technology Integration: International Cases And Generational Attitudes Toward Technology In Education, David J. Mulder

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The current generation of young teachers entering the profession is often presumed to have an easy comfort with and seemingly innate understanding of technology. Prensky (2001) has gone so far as to name them “digital natives” and has claimed that members of the millennial generation “think and process information fundamentally differently from their predecessors” (p. 1). However, recent studies in several English-speaking western nations call the millennial generation’s innately skillful use of technology into question, and some studies of millennial teachers indicate that they are, in fact, no better at integrating technology into their teaching than their colleagues from other …

Campaign Finance And Collective Egotism, Conor M. Kelly Jan 2016

Campaign Finance And Collective Egotism, Conor M. Kelly

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Currently, campaign finance law in the United States is governed by the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United v. FEC, but the debate surrounding the case has grown tired. In order to reinvigorate public discourse on this consequential topic, this article proposes an interdisciplinary conversation between theology and law, relying on Reinhold Niebuhr’s notion of collective egotism to shed new light on the decision. The comparison with Niebuhr highlights the Court’s problematic reliance on unexamined empirical claims, pinpointing areas of the case in need of further critical assessment and suggesting viable alternatives. The result is a more precise …

Back To Basics: Public Adjudication Of Corporate Atrocities Torts, Maya Steinitz Jan 2016

Back To Basics: Public Adjudication Of Corporate Atrocities Torts, Maya Steinitz

Faculty Scholarship

The editors of this online symposium invited me to contribute to the subject of an argument I have recently advanced. This argument is that the world needs a permanent International Court of Civil Justice (ICCJ) to adjudicate cross-border mass torts. A common reaction to this proposal has been to suggest that the function of such an international court be assumed by one of the existing arbitration institutions or filled by a new one. I’d like to take this opportunity to argue against that idea.

Corporate atrocities, which are the symposium’s focus, may be crimes, but they also have a tort …

This Article concerns the particular regulatory responsibilities only of FDA. It sets to one side the possible regulatory authority of agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") or the U.S. Department of Agriculture ("USDA"). This approach risks replicating the regulatory fracture introduced during the Reagan Administration and criticized by some scholars,15 but there is a great deal to say about current FDA practices. Out of similar considerations of space and focus, this Article also sets to one side many other important issues that surround GM foods: intellectual property rights; rights to free speech or commercial speech; fair trade …

Single-crystalline, single-phase CaKFe4As4 has been grown out of a high-temperature, quaternary melt. Temperature-dependent measurements of x-ray diffraction, anisotropic electrical resistivity, elastoresistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall effect, magnetization, and specific heat, combined with field-dependent measurements of electrical resistivity and field and pressure-dependent measurements of magnetization indicate that CaKFe4As4 is an ordered, stoichiometric, Fe-based superconductor with a superconducting critical temperature, Tc = 35.0 ± 0.2 K. Other than superconductivity, there is no indication of any other phase transition for 1.8K ≤ T ≤ 300 K. All of these thermodynamic and transport data reveal striking similarities to …

We propose to measure the photo-production cross section of J/Ψ near threshold in search of the recently observed LHCb hidden charm resonances Pc(4380) and Pc(4450) consistent with "pentaquarks." The observation of these resonances in photo-production is important to differentiate the true resonance nature of the LHCb states from kinematics enhancements. The bremsstrahlung photon beam produced with an 11 GeV electron beam at CEBAF enables us to cover the energy range of J/Ψ production from the threshold photo-production energy of 8.2 GeV to an energy beyond the presumed Pc(4450) resonance production. The proposed experiment will be carried out in Hall C …

An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with center-of-mass energies √seN ∼ 20-100 GeV and luminosity L ∼ 10³⁴ cm-² s-¹ would offer new opportunities to study heavy quark production in high-energy electron or photon scattering on protons and nuclei. We report about an R&D project exploring the feasibility of direct measurements of nuclear gluon densities at x >∼ 0.1 (gluonic EMC effect, antishadowing) using open charm production at EIC. We describe the charm production rates and angle-momentum distributions at large x and discuss methods of charm reconstruction using next-generation detector capabilities (π/K identification, vertex reconstruction). The results could be …

Relating Transverse-Momentum-Dependent And Collinear Factorization Theorems In A Generalized Formalism, J. Collins, L. Gamberg, A. Prokudin, T. C. Rogers, N. Sato, B. Wang

Physics Faculty Publications

We construct an improved implementation for combining transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization and collinear factorization. TMD factorization is suitable for low transverse momentum physics, while collinear factorization is suitable for high transverse momenta and for a cross section integrated over transverse momentum. The result is a modified version of the standard 𝑊 + 𝑌 prescription traditionally used in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism and related approaches. We further argue that questions regarding the shape and 𝑄 dependence of the cross sections at lower 𝑄 are largely governed by the matching to the 𝑌 term.

Reconsidering The Tax Treaty, Steven A. Dean, Rebecca M. Kysar Jan 2016

Reconsidering The Tax Treaty, Steven A. Dean, Rebecca M. Kysar

Faculty Scholarship

For nearly one hundred years, the international tax regime steadfastly pursued a single nemesis, double taxation. States armed themselves against this common enemy with their weapon of choice, the double tax treaty. Nearly uniform in language and approach, the treaties proliferated to more than three thousand in number,1 resulting in a secure arrangement between and among states and taxpayers.

Yet in recent years, states have had to expand the war to multiple fronts in the face of globalization, technological changes, evolving taxpayer abuses, and shifts in both domestic and international political pressures. For instance, a growing recognition that the …

Factors That Affect Faculty Use Of Course Management Systems In Traditional Courses At Private 4-Year Historically Black Colleges And Universities: An Empirical Approach, Hyacinth L. Burton

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The use of information technology to supplement and enhance teaching is prevalent in many higher education institutions (HEIs). HEIs throughout the United States have invested in course management systems (CMS); however, despite heavy investments, faculty use of such systems is limited. Many studies were conducted on the use of CMS in HEIs, but they concentrated on faculty use of such systems at non-Historically Black Colleges and Universities (non-HBCUs). Little has been done on the use of CMS in HBCUs. The goal of this study was to examine factors that affect faculty use of CMS in traditional courses at HBCUs. Facilitating …

A Study Of Data Sharing Practices Within Scholarly Research Communities, Mary Harward Jan 2016

A Study Of Data Sharing Practices Within Scholarly Research Communities, Mary Harward

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Recent literature acknowledges the importance of data and effective data management strategies to facilitate collaboration between disciplines of research. Likewise, understanding the policies and practices that support data sharing is a growing area of research in the fields of information and social studies of science. Shared data allow researchers to build on fellow researchers’ work to enrich and facilitate advancements in science. While much has been written to identify the elements that adversely affect data sharing in scholarly research, a definitive framework remains unclear. Several theories have been presented to explain this shortfall; however, the reasons are highly diverse. Some …

The Design And Implementation Of Online Radiology Modules Using The Addie Process And Rapid Prototyping, Leslie Bofill Jan 2016

The Design And Implementation Of Online Radiology Modules Using The Addie Process And Rapid Prototyping, Leslie Bofill

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Medical schools in the United States have begun the process of changing the teaching methodologies used in the classroom. The traditional, teacher-centered environment is shifting toward a more student-centered, active learning environment. Part of this shift is the integration of online learning to deliver a continuously expanding medical curriculum by moving content learning outside the classroom and creating active learning activities for the classroom. As more medical schools adopt online learning as a supplemental teaching tool, medical education faculty are taking on the role of instructional designers without having any theoretical knowledge on adult learning theory or online learning practices. …

Outcome Measures For Mild Balance And Cognitive Decline In A Pre-Old Adult: A Case Report, Melissa Chan, Shari Rone-Adams Jan 2016

Outcome Measures For Mild Balance And Cognitive Decline In A Pre-Old Adult: A Case Report, Melissa Chan, Shari Rone-Adams

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background and Purpose. Early detection and treatment of age-related decline, particularly balance and cognition, are increasingly being emphasized in current research. However, the majority of research on older adults focuses on participants who are 65 years and older. For individuals who are 60-64 years old, this is an age range where they may or may not be considered an older adult. This poses a problem applying the results of these studies to pre-old adults to accurately diagnose, measure and classify risk in the areas of cognition and balance. Case Description. The patient is a 61-year-old woman with a clinical diagnosis …
