Mock Flow Loop (Mfl) For Self-Powered Fontan Circulation, Shanice Jones, Kristin Sverrisdottir, Arka Das, Gabriela Espinoza
ASEE EDGD Midyear Conference
The Fontan procedure is the current treatment for babies born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). The surgery entails multiple severe complications and a survival rate of less than 50% by adulthood. Modification to the Fontan surgery is proposed to lower mortality rate in patients. A bifurcating graft (IJS) has been designed and validated via computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to increase velocity and reduce pressure within the pulmonary arteries. A dynamically scaled mock flow loop (MFL) will be configured to validate the optimized IJS results obtained from the CFD design. The MFL will be based on a reduced Fontan lumped-parameter …

ASEE EDGD Midyear Conference
Our team's goal is to redesign and improve upon the Lego brick. We believe that Legos are an incredible outlet for creativity for all ages, but as builders grow older and more experienced with Lego construction the complexity that stimulates the creative mind begins to dwindle. To remedy this issue, we re-designed traditional Lego bricks to have stronger links between pieces as well as greater constructive maneuverability. Our improved Lego aims to benefit the community of Lego enthusiasts that create grand complex structures. The new Lego allows for more defined features in large builds and greater structural integrity in all …

It is widely known that human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) can cause acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), but treatments to prevent the virus from escalating to that severity have come a long way since the virus was first described in the 1980s. The medications, combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), keep the virus from replicating, thus stopping its progression to AIDS. However, this treatment does not seem to ultimately benefit the brain, in part because cART does not uniformly penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and in part because HIV-1 seems to permanently turn on the part of the immune system that causes …
Ancient Animal Ethics: The Earliest Arguments For The Ethical Consideration Of Nonhuman Animals, Joshua J. Sias
Ancient Animal Ethics: The Earliest Arguments For The Ethical Consideration Of Nonhuman Animals, Joshua J. Sias
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
Primarily focused on the ancient Greek philosophers, this work offers a survey of the earliest arguments for and against the inclusion of nonhuman animals in human realms of ethical consideration. By following the trends of ancient western thought concerning animal ethics, the influencing factors behind the downfall of the subject in Medieval times, both in terms of discourse and practice, is discovered in the philosophical exchange that preceded medieval thought.

Interpersonal Mistreatment, Organizational Attitudes And Well-Being: The Impact Of Instigator’S Hierarchical Position And Demographic Characteristics, Nurul Ain Hidayah Binti Abas, Kathleen Otto
Organization Management Journal
Identifying the consequences of interpersonal mistreatment on the targets' organizational attitudes and well-being is key to promoting a healthy organizational culture. Across two experiments, we explored the impact of an instigator’s hierarchical position and demographic characteristic on the targets’ organizational attitudes and situational well-being. In the first experiment, respondents were presented with a vignette describing an interpersonal mistreatment scenario in which an instigator’s hierarchical position and gender had been manipulated. As hypothesized, interpersonal mistreatment conducted by a supervisor significantly decreased the targets’ organizational commitment and increased turnover intentions. Also, higher turnover intentions and more positive emotions were experienced by those …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Wound healing is an orderly process driven by numerous cellular mediators that aim to accelerate it. In skin conditions such as leprosy and psoriasis, Centella asiatica, which contains high amounts of triterpenoid saponins (TSs), has been reported to have beneficial effects. This study examined the effects of TS fraction of the herb on tissue regeneration and excision wound repair in rat skin. Briefly, TS fraction was prepared from C. Asiatica and applied on the wound area for 7 consecutive days. The IL-1β, NF-κB, and other biochemical parameters were then estimated, followed by examination of inflammatory cell infiltration, epithelialization, angiogenesis, and …

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an inherited hemolytic anemia with compensatory reticulocytosis. Recent studies have shown that increased levels of reticulocytosis during infancy are associated with increased hospitalizations for SCA sequelae as well as cerebrovascular pathologies. In this study, absolute reticulocyte counts (ARC) measured prior to transfusion were analysed among a cohort of 29 pediatric SCA patients receiving chronic transfusion therapy (CTT) for primary and secondary stroke prevention. A cross-sectional flow cytometric analysis of the reticulocyte phenotype was also performed. Mean duration of CTT was 3.1 ± 2.6 years. Fifteen subjects with magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) -vasculopathy had significantly higher …

Glugacon-like-peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) is a G protein-coupled receptor located on the β-cells of the pancreas. When the incretin hormone, glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1), binds to GLP-1R, it triggers intracellular signaling cascades that lead to insulin release from pancreatic β-cells. However, the half-life of GLP-1 in plasma is less than two minutes, which makes GLP-1 ineffective to administer as a drug for treatment of abnormal glucose levels. Previous studies have investigated GLP-1R agonists for use of glucose-lowering therapy. T-0632, a non-peptidic small molecule, is an inverse agonist of GLP-1R. Understanding the molecular interactions of binding between T-0632 and GLP-1R within the binding pocket …
An Automated Temporal, Amplitude, And Complexity-Based Comparison Of Commercial Plethysmographs, Matthew Mikhail
An Automated Temporal, Amplitude, And Complexity-Based Comparison Of Commercial Plethysmographs, Matthew Mikhail
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The study of plethysmographic physiology has been limited by a lack of standardized and open plethysmographic hardware in clinical use. Fundamental differences in the processing of output between various devices obfuscate direct comparison, and the role played by physiology versus that by technology in the final viewable plethysmogram (PPG). This study proposes a largely automated, unbiased method for quantitatively comparing the outputs from proprietary pulse oximeter devices along three metrics: temporal delay, amplification, and complexity. It then applies these methods to the deconstruction of Masimo and Nellcor pulse oximeters.
With IRB approval, twelve healthy, awake subjects were studied. Each individual …

The Importance Of Having Two X Chromosomes, Jenny Link, Arthur P. Arnold, Karen Reue, Mansoureh Eghbali, Eric Vilain, Xuqi Chen, Negar Ghahramani, Yuichiro Itoh, Jingyuan Li, Tuck Ngun, Shayna M. Williams-Burris
Biology
Historically, it was thought that the number of X chromosomes plays little role in causing sex differences in traits. Recently, selected mouse models have been used increasingly to compare mice with the same type of gonad but with one versus two copies of the X chromosome. Study of these models demonstrates that mice with one X chromosome can be strikingly different from those with two X chromosomes, when the differences are not attributable to confounding group differences in gonadal hormones. The number of X chromosomes affects adiposity and metabolic disease, cardiovascular ischaemia/reperfusion injury and behaviour. The effects of X chromosome …

Use Of A Mouse Model To Evaluate The Effect Of Statins On The Immune Response To An Influenza Virus Vaccine, Calvin Olsen, Bart Tarbet
Biology Posters
Statins are cholesterol lowering drugs that have shown a profound effect on human health by reducing cardiovascular disease. However, two recent publications in the Journal of Infectious Diseases showed that statin use had a negative impact on the influenza vaccine response in elderly individuals [1, 2]. We propose to evaluate the immune response following vaccination in mice undergoing statin treatment. An initial study will determine the therapeutic window for statin treatment of mice fed a lipid-enriched diet. From the literature this window is expected to be between 21-28 days. That therapeutic window will be used for evaluation of the immune …

The Role Of Cyclic Nucleotide Gated Channels, Retrograde Ift Rate Change, And Chemical Concentration In The Olfactory Habituation Of C. Elegans, Michaela A. O'Driscoll
Honors Program Theses
The cilium is an organelle utilized by the cell for signaling purposes. Olfaction is a process that utilizes cilia for cell signaling, specifically as the starting point of the neuronal olfactory pathway, by which volatile odorant molecules trigger neuronal depolarization and subsequent behavioral modification. Related to cilia function and development is the process of intraflagellar transport (IFT): the bidirectional movement of channels, receptors, and other proteins by motors along the microtubules of the cilia, including odorant receptors. The phenomenon of odorant habituation upon continuous exposure to an attractant chemical has been previously confirmed, but the role of IFT in this …

Honors Undergraduate Theses
When making my work I constantly reflect on past mythologies, images, and objects. These served people as a way to make sense of and understand the dynamics of the world around them. As we continue to alter and shape the world into one designed for exclusively human benefit, we need new models that reveal the dynamics of our relationship to the world around us. This is what artists have been doing for centuries, and I specifically look to those using animals and animal imagery in their work to further mythologize our contemporary understanding of the human-other animal relationship. This Article begins by providing a brief historical retrospective of the development of the patent eligibility doctrine, and then delves into the related questions of: (1) what are the Supreme Court’s policy objectives for the recent reinvigoration of the patent eligibility doctrine; and (2) has it achieved those objectives? The article then discusses three important out-standing questions regarding the application of the new test for patent eligibility: (1) what constitutes a natural phenomenon; (2) what constitutes an inventive step; and (3) what, if any, role does preemption play in the analysis? The article then provides four examples of recent lower …

A Neuroergonomics Study Of Brain Eeg's Activity During Manual Lifting Tasks, Awad Aljuaid
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electroencephalography (EEG) has been shown to be a reliable tool in neuroergonomics studies due to the relatively low cost of brain data collection and limited body invasion. The application of EEG frequency bands (including theta, alpha and beta), enjoyed a wide range of interest in physical and cognitive ergonomics. The psychophysical approach has been used for decades to improve safe work practices by understanding human limitations in manual materials handling. The main objective of this research project was to study the brain's EEG activity expressed by the power spectral density during manual lifting tasks related to: 1) the maximum acceptable …
