Experiences Of Trust In Longer-Lasting Formal Youth Mentoring Relationships, Michelle Levine

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this longitudinal qualitative study was to investigate youth experiences of trust and mentor experiences supporting youth trust in longer-term formal youth mentoring relationships. Trust was defined as youth relying on and confiding in their mentors based on experiences of mentor reliability, honesty, and emotional sensitivity and protection from emotional harm. Thematic analysis was conducted on interview data from a longitudinal dataset, involving analysis of narratives from interviews (n=147) with youth, mentors, and parents for mentoring matches that lasted at least two years. Overall, participants in this study identified multiple ways trust was experienced by youth and supported …

Comment: Humanitarian Relief Logistics: Pre-Positioning Warehouse Strategy, S Roh, C-S Kim

Plymouth Business School

The importance of preparedness is emphasised in humanitarian relief logistics as it gets even more sophisticated. Pre-purchased relief items are stocked in pre-positioned warehouses around the world by various relief organisations which is commonly taken to improve their capacities to deliver sufficient relief aid within a relatively short time frame. This comment paper provides a better understanding about the humanitarian disaster management with the comparison between the commercial logistics. Furthermore, pre-positioned warehousing strategy is overviewed along with the global warehouse locations operated by international relief organisations.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (Essa): What It Means For Educators Of Students At Risk, Cordelia D. Zinskie, Dan W. Rea

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

This editorial perspective examines some ways that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which becomes operational in the 2017–2018 school year, may enhance the capacity of educators to help students and schools at risk of underperforming. It also addresses some of the challenges that educators will face under ESSA in ensuring success for all students. We highlight aspects of ESSA that may be of most interest to our readers including the broadened definition of academic success, expansion of subgroups for data reporting, emphasis on evidence-based research and practice, focus on continuous improvement, and need for increased educator understanding of research …

Crisis Events In K-12 Online Learning: Educator Perceptions And Preparedness, Dawn Tysinger, Jeffrey A. Tysinger, Terry D. Diamanduros

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

Although K–12 online learning institutions may be protected from certain school safety concerns (i.e., physical violence on a student or a teacher), physical distance does not offer protection from all potential crises that may impact individual students or the online school environment. The current survey research explored educators’ perceptions of and preparedness for the following crisis frequencies in the online learning environment: suspected child/adolescent neglect, suspected child/adolescent abuse, suspected student suicidal ideation, suspected student homicidal ideation, unexpected death of a student, unexpected death of a teacher, emotional aftermath of natural disasters, and emotional aftermath of terrorist incidents. Across the sample, …

School Counselor Use Of Narrative Therapy To Support Students Of Color Transitioning From An Alternative School Setting, Natoya Hill Haskins, Leonissa Johnson, Lee E. Grimes, Autumn Joy Moore, Candice Norris-Brown

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal

The authors propose a collaborative application of narrative therapy utilizing the school counselor, teachers, and parents to support students of color transitioning from an alternative school setting. Research indicates that students of color transitioning from alternative settings often face stigma and marginalization by teachers and peers. The authors contend that school counselors can use this collaborative narrative approach to support students to create new narratives within a supportive environment. Included is an illustration demonstrating the application of the collaborative narrative therapy process.

Modern Advancements In Post-Detonation Nuclear Forensic Analysis, S. Adam Stratz, Jonathan A. Gill, John D. Auxier Ii, Howard L. Hall

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Deterring nuclear terrorism is a critical national asset to support the preclusion of non-state actors from initiating a nuclear attack on the United States. Successful attribution of a detonated nuclear weapon allows for timely responsive measures that prove essential in the period following a nuclear event. In conjunction with intelligence and law enforcement evidence, the technical nuclear forensics (TNF) post-detonation community supports this mission through the development and advancement of expertise to characterize weapon debris through a rapid, accurate, and detailed approach. Though the TNF field is young, numerous strides have been made in recent years toward a more robust …

Streptococcus Pneumoniae Intracranial Abscess And Post-Infectious Vasculitis, Alexandra Lucas, Ko Ko Maung, Ryan Ratts

Dartmouth Scholarship

Intracranial abscesses are rare complications of Streptococcus pneumoniae infections, and to our knowledge, there have been no case reports of post-infectious vasculitis developing in such patients. Here we describe the case of a 48-year-old post-splenectomy male who developed post-infectious vasculitis following S. pneumoniae otitis media complicated by mastoiditis, osteomyelitis, meningitis, and intracranial abscess. Clinicians ought to be aware of the possible adverse outcomes of invasive S. pneumoniae and the limitations of current treatment options.

Papuloerythroderma Of Ofuji: A First Case Report From Indonesia, Graciella Regina, Listya Paramita, Sunard Radiono, Yohanes Widodo Wirohadidjojo, William R. Faber

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia

Papuloerythroderma (PE) is a rare skin disease which was first described by Ofuji et al. in 1984, with a typical sign that the lesions spare the large cutaneous folds, known as the deck chair sign. Due to its recent identification, this disease is still underrecognized and may lead to misdiagnosis. We reported the first case report of PE of Ofuji from Indonesia in which the diagnosis was delayed for two years. Besides the deck chair sign in the large cutaneous fold, we also found that the area between and above his eyebrows that was relatively spared in contrast to the …
