Mending Invisible Wounds: The Efficacy And Legality Of Mdma-Assisted Psychotherapy In United States' Veterans Suffering With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Jonathan Perry Dec 2016

Mending Invisible Wounds: The Efficacy And Legality Of Mdma-Assisted Psychotherapy In United States' Veterans Suffering With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Jonathan Perry

Journal of Law and Health

Though Veteran Affairs has provided crucial life sustaining—and often lifesaving—treatments to returning soldiers, the substantial and ever-increasing rates of veteran suicides, drug addictions, and criminal behavior indicate a need for broader options in treatment. One of the most profound discoveries uncovered through MDMA-assisted psychotherapy research is MDMA’s facilitation of the alleviation of addictive behavior in subjects, and, as a result, an alleviation of addictions in general. Addiction is one of the key symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and drug abuse plays a large role in the other afflictions suffered by veterans, namely criminal activity and a high rate of …

A Case Study Of Abdominal Pedicle Skin Flap Repairing And Early Intervention To The Patient Who Suffered From Severe Hot Crush Injury In Hand, Po-Yao Wang, Jan-Wei Chiu, Man-Fang Hsu, Ruo-Lan Liu Dec 2016

A Case Study Of Abdominal Pedicle Skin Flap Repairing And Early Intervention To The Patient Who Suffered From Severe Hot Crush Injury In Hand, Po-Yao Wang, Jan-Wei Chiu, Man-Fang Hsu, Ruo-Lan Liu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Machine crush injury is the most common occupational injury in Taiwan. Machines operated at high pressures and temperatures can cause severe injury to the hands. To improve functional recovery of the hands, pedicled groin flap transfer is recommended. This reconstructive option is useful and versatile for covering hand wounds. The transfer yields predictable results with a procedure that is substantially less difficult and takes less time compared with free-tissue transfer; the disadvantage is that the extremity must be immobilized. Pedicled groin flap transfer can cause some complications, such as joint stiffness and edema, which can be prevented through early intervention …

Mesh-Glove Electrical Stimulation On Upper Extremity Function In Children With Spastic Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy: A Pilot Study, Chienwei Peng, Chialing Chen, Kuanglin Lin, Kehchung Lin, Chingyi Wu, Wenyu Liu, Hsiehching Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Introduction: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is one of the non-invasive treatments for improving spasticity of upper extremity (UE) and motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, some children felt uncomfortable in receiving the neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The mesh-glove electrical stimulation (MGES) is one kind of somatosensory electrical stimulation. Recently, there were few researches indicating that MGES causes positive effectiveness for the spasticity control of UE in children with CP. This study aims to investigate the treatment effects of MGES on UE function and daily function in children with CP. Methods: This controlled trial is based on a pre- and …

Comparing The Application Of Assessment Tests On Patients With Cerebrovascular Accident: The Mini-Mental Status Examination-Chinese Test Versus The Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery-Screening Test, Tingchia Wang, Yuhsin Wu, Naiwen Guo, Maohsiung Huang, Jyonghuei Su Dec 2016

Comparing The Application Of Assessment Tests On Patients With Cerebrovascular Accident: The Mini-Mental Status Examination-Chinese Test Versus The Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery-Screening Test, Tingchia Wang, Yuhsin Wu, Naiwen Guo, Maohsiung Huang, Jyonghuei Su

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Purposes: Patients with stroke often experience neurocognitive impairment; thus, an effective screening test should be developed. The Mini-Mental Status Examination-Chinese (MMSE-C) test and the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery-Screening (LNNB-S) test are two commonly used tests for assessing cognitive impairment. In Taiwan, few studies have been conducted on the applicability of cognitive assessment tests. In the present study, we examined the assessment effectiveness of the MMSE-C and LNNB-S and compared them regarding their assessment effectiveness for impairment in various brain regions. Methods: This study was a retrospective study. Medical records from the 2005-2014 period for patients with stroke at the rehabilitation division …

The Efficacy Of High Intensity Interval Training On Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Reviewarticle, Yuping Huang, Weihwa Liaw, Kueiyu Chien, Chienming Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Recent studies have begun to replace low-intensity exercise with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to improve physical fitness and health-related quality of life of cancer survivors. To the best of our knowledge, there is no systematic reviewarticle to investigate the effect of HIIT on cancer survivors. Therefore, the aim of this systematic reviewarticle study is to summarize relevant randomized controlled trials on the physiologic efficacy of HIIT on cancer survivors, and to establish the clinical intervention principles of HIIT for cancer survivors. The literature reviewarticle covered online electronic databases (Pubmed, Medline, PEDro, and CEPS) from 2000 to 2016, and searched for …

Effects Of Virtual Reality-Based On Constraint-Induced Therapy On Upper-Extremity Function In Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Pilot Study, Yunju Lin, Chunwen Chen, Chiaying Chung, Hsiehching Chen, Chishiun Wu, Tzuling Chang, Chialing Chen Dec 2016

Effects Of Virtual Reality-Based On Constraint-Induced Therapy On Upper-Extremity Function In Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Pilot Study, Yunju Lin, Chunwen Chen, Chiaying Chung, Hsiehching Chen, Chishiun Wu, Tzuling Chang, Chialing Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (CP) often use their sound limb to perform daily activities, which results in the learned non-use of the affected limb. Recently, many clinical researches have demonstrated the effectiveness of modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT). With the development of technology, virtual reality (VR) has gradually become one of auxiliary tools in novel rehabilitation therapy. However, mCIMT often causes frustrations in using the affected upper limb. This study uses VR as auxiliary rehabilitation equipment to form a new treatment approach-virtual reality-based constraint-induced movement therapy (VRCIT)-to investigate the effects VRCIT has on the function of the upper …

The Effect Of Wearing Compression Tights On Cardiopulmonary Function And Running Economy In Sedentary Overweight Or Obese Females, Shuming Yeh, Huangyuan Chang, Kuosheng Yang, Guanyu Lin, Souncheng Wang, Yunju Chen Dec 2016

The Effect Of Wearing Compression Tights On Cardiopulmonary Function And Running Economy In Sedentary Overweight Or Obese Females, Shuming Yeh, Huangyuan Chang, Kuosheng Yang, Guanyu Lin, Souncheng Wang, Yunju Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Purpose: Previous studies conducted on pressure garments have suggested that compression garments may have positive effects on cardiopulmonary function while performing exercises by improving peripheral venous return and reducing muscle oscillation that may cause energy loss. However, most studies have not been able to prove this hypothesis and concluded that compression has no positive effect on cardiopulmonary function while performing exercises. This study was aimed at determining whether compression garments with a pressure gradient can reduce energy loss caused by muscle oscillation and subsequently promote running economy and cardiopulmonary function in sedentary overweight females. Methods: This study was conducted with …

Nuclear Power: Black Sky Liability Or Black Sky Asset?, Sherrell R. Greene Dec 2016

Nuclear Power: Black Sky Liability Or Black Sky Asset?, Sherrell R. Greene

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Ready access to abundant electricity is a key enabler of modern life. During the past decade the vulnerability of Critical Infrastructure sectors in the U.S. to a variety of natural hazards and man-made threats has become increasingly apparent. The electrical infrastructure (the “Grid”) is the foundation for all other critical civil infrastructures upon which our society depends. Therefore, protection of the Grid is an energy security, homeland security, and national security issue of highest importance. Geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) induced by solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs), electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attacks, and cyber attacks are three events having the potential to plunge …
