Let’S Chat: Assessing Virtual Reference Service For Optimal User Experience, Heidi Gauder, Margaret Barkley
Roesch Library Faculty Presentations
Both librarians and student employees staff our virtual reference service, so ensuring consistent and quality chat transactions is important. Sample transcripts from fall 2014 were evaluated, and a fall 2015 follow-up analysis reviewed service improvement efforts. This poster will highlight how a simple scale can be used to assess virtual reference service.

I Want To Do A Systematic Review, Christine Fournier, Kate Ghezzi-Kopel
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
This year Cornell University Library on Ithaca's campus launched a systematic review service in response to demand from non-medicine disciplines on campus. We have worked with various disciplines, including nutrition and the natural sciences, and soon realized that the definition of what is a "systematic review" is not universal. I will speak about the experience of setting up the systematic review service, challenges in communicating what a systematic review is, and what we have learned.

Chemical Reactions: Marijuana, Opioids, and Our Families is the seventh Massachusetts Family Impact Seminar. This seminar was designed to emphasize a family perspective in policymaking on issues related to the legalization of marijuana and managing the opioid abuse crisis in the Commonwealth. In general, Family Impact Seminars analyze the consequences an issue, policy, or program may have for families.

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
The social and political public health model established by States to separate and isolate criminals from society has for many decades given way to policies that support and have resulted in the large-scale use of incarceration as a means of punishment for major crimes as well as minor offenses. Most prevention strategies focus on adolescence and adulthood as cases of serious offenses continue to increase across the nation. Such approaches may be lacking additional significant mechanisms to interrupt and prevent the propensity for crime earlier in children’s lives; mechanisms which will determine if children will be future successes in society …
Optimization Of Polysaccharide Extraction From Taro And Its Binding Capacities Of Lipid And Bile Salts In Vitro, Liu Ping, Qi Xingpu, Liu Jing, Yao Fang, Li Zhifang
Optimization Of Polysaccharide Extraction From Taro And Its Binding Capacities Of Lipid And Bile Salts In Vitro, Liu Ping, Qi Xingpu, Liu Jing, Yao Fang, Li Zhifang
Food and Machinery
The extraction technology of water–soluble polysaccharides in fresh taro was investigated in this paper. Using simulated conditions of human digestion in vitro, its fat-binding, cholesterol-binding and bile salts-binding capacities were studied in order to evaluate its potential hypocholesterolemic activity in vitro. The results showed that the highest extraction efficiency of taro polysaccharide could be obtain under the conditon of using solid-liquid ratio at 1∶6, reacting at 80 ℃ for 6 h with 85% ethanol, and the extraction ratio reaches (4.92±0.18)%. Taro water–soluble polysaccharides exhibited much higher binding capacities of both fat and bile acid, while much lower one of cholesterol, …

Comparison Of Volatile Components In Australia Mint Obtained By Supercritical And Subcritical Extraction, Zhang Si, Xie Hongqi, Liu Xuehui, Wang Jing, Liu Dongbo
Food and Machinery
In this study, the volatile components in Australia mint were extracted, using supercritical CO2 and subcritical butane, and then the extractives were analyzed by GC—MS. The results showed that the extraction rate of supercritical CO2 was 2.5%, and that of the subcritical butane was 1.4%. Through the analysis of GC—MS, 21 components were identified in the supercritical CO2 extraction, and the relative content of menthol was 70.33%. However, 11 components were identified in the subcritical butane extraction, and the relative content of menthol was 60.83%. Our results showed that the supercritical CO2 extraction of volatile components …

Application Of Bayesian Network For Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment, Liu Jing, Yang Jiaxin, Guan Xiao
Food and Machinery
In this paper, the basic theory of microbial risk assessment was introduced, and the software modules used to establish predictive microbial models were concluded. The characteristics of Bayesian networks and its application in the food-borne microbial quantitative risk assessment were also summarized. Therefore, its future application in microbial quantitative risk assessment were prospected.
New Determination Methods Of Acrylamide In Food Products, Wang Zimeng, Lu Dai, Shi Xingbo, Deng Jiehong
New Determination Methods Of Acrylamide In Food Products, Wang Zimeng, Lu Dai, Shi Xingbo, Deng Jiehong
Food and Machinery
Acrylamide (AA) is a kind of neurotoxin and potential carcinogen, formed in heating food treatment, has been aroused extensive attention in all over the word. Accurate determination of AA in complex food system is the first importance to evaluate its harmful effects on human health. In this paper, the disadvantages of traditional determination methods of AA, including liquid chromatography, gas chromotography and their coupling technique, were reviewed. Moreover, the complex of sample pretreatment process, requirement of necessary sample derivatives and professional analyzer, and expensive analytical instruments etc. were focused on. Furthermore, several new determination methods, such as capillary electrophoresis, enzyme-linked …

Smart Cities: Improving The Roadside Environment With Distributed Sensor Systems, Christine M. Kendrick
PSU Transportation Seminars
The City of Portland is exploring how distributed "Internet of Things" (IoT) sensor systems can be used to improve the available data that is usable by city engineers, planners, and the public to help inform transportation operations, enable assessments of public health and equity, advance Portland’s Climate Action Plan goals, and create opportunities for economic development and civic engagement.
The City is currently looking at how low-cost air quality sensors can be used to improve and increase real-time understanding of transportation-related pollutants. However, the state of low-cost air quality sensor technology is not usable off the shelf due to sensitivity …
