Family Functioning, Parenting Strategies, And Disordered Eating Among Hispanic Youth, Dina Ferranti
Family Functioning, Parenting Strategies, And Disordered Eating Among Hispanic Youth, Dina Ferranti
Open Access Dissertations
Disordered eating (DE) is a major public health concern related to both clinical eating disorders and obesity. DE encompasses various subclinical, yet maladaptive eating behaviors that include dieting, binge eating, and/or extreme weight control behaviors (i.e. self-induced vomiting, laxatives). Hispanic youth appear to be especially vulnerable to DE in comparison to other ethnic groups. However, to date there has been little research focused on Hispanic youth and DE, particularly those in middle childhood (8-11 years). The purpose of this study was to test a theoretical model examining family level variables, parenting strategies for eating and physical activity (PEAS) and family …
Classroom Engagement Mediates The Relationship Between Internalizing Behavior And Academic Outcomes In Head Start Children, Krystal M. Bichay
Classroom Engagement Mediates The Relationship Between Internalizing Behavior And Academic Outcomes In Head Start Children, Krystal M. Bichay
Open Access Theses
Internalizing behavior in preschool children from low-income households is consistently negatively associated with academic outcomes, specifically in language/literacy and mathematics. To understand these associations, it is important to identify different mechanisms that might explain the relationship between internalizing behavior and academic outcomes. Classroom engagement is a domain-general skill that may explain this relationship. The purpose of the current study was to examine whether classroom engagement across different contexts--including peers, teachers, and tasks--mediated the relationship between internalizing behavior at the beginning of the year and language/literacy and mathematics skills at the end of the year. Structural equation modeling was used to …

Exploring The Presence Of Microplastics In Salt Creek, Troy J. Janesheski, Tiffany M. Tyler
Exploring The Presence Of Microplastics In Salt Creek, Troy J. Janesheski, Tiffany M. Tyler
Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium
Rising concerns of microplastics, defined as synthetic polymeric materials less than 5 mm in diameter, have emerged over the past several years, due to the many potential and known negative implications on the ecosystem. While a great deal of research has taken place in marine ecosystems, very little work has been done in watersheds. Therefore, studies were carried out in the Salt Creek (IN), Lake Michigan watershed in effort to determine the type and extent of synthetic polymers present. Sediment and water samples have been collected, screened, and processed mostly by wet peroxide oxidation (WPO) to isolate microplastics from natural …

Native T1 Values Identify Myocardial Changes And Stratify Disease Severity In Patients With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy., Laura J. Olivieri, Peter Kellman, Robert J. Mccarter, Russell R. Cross, Michael S. Hansen, Christopher F. Spurney
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked, inherited disorder causing dilated cardiomyopathy with variable onset and progression. Currently we lack objective markers of the effect of therapies targeted towards preventing progression of subclinical cardiac disease. Thus, our aim was to compare the ability of native T1 and extracellular volume (ECV) measurements to differentiate risk of myocardial disease in DMD and controls.
METHODS: Twenty boys with DMD and 16 age/gender-matched controls without history predisposing to cardiac fibrosis, but with a clinical indication for cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) evaluation, underwent CMR with contrast. Data points collected include left ventricular ejection fraction …

Concentration Dependent Aerosol Substrates: Uv-Vis Attenuation Measurement, Cynthia Smith, Christian Q. Mundorf, Christopher Iceman
Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium
Ultraviolet and visible (UV/vis) light were used to determine the composition of aerosol samples taken from several military bases located in the Middle East. The aerosols were collected using a cascade impactor placing time resolved aerosols on strips of Mylar. These strips were then fed into a fiber optic UV/vis spectrometer which passes light through the Mylar strip and detects the amount of transmitted light relative to a blank standard. By measuring the light transmitted, the amount of aerosol on the Mylar strip was determined proportional to a calibration curve of standard mass depositions. The UV/vis tests were then compared …

Subharmonic aided pressure estimation (SHAPE) is based on the inverse relationship between the subharmonic amplitude of contrast microbubbles (obtained by transmitting at the fundamental frequency fo and receiving at fo/2) and the ambient pressure (see fig.1).
A noninvasive ultrasound based pressure estimation procedure would be a major development in the diagnosis of portal hypertension and less invasive than the current catheter-based hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurement.
The hypothesis of this study was that portal vein pressures can be monitored and quantified noninvasively in humans using SHAPE.
First selected waveforms were optimized in vitro and in canines, then SHAPE was …

Does Aco Adoption Change The Health Workforce Configuration In U.S. Hospitals?, Avi Dor, Patricia Pittman, Clese Erikson, Roberto Delhy, Xinxin Han
Health Workforce Research Center Publications
Working with Premier, Inc., this study explored how participation in ACOs affects hospitals’ workforce assignment and configuration. The study 1) describes the differences in workforce characteristics in hospitals adopting versus not adopting an ACO model and 2) determines key changes in workforce before and after a hospital adopts an ACO model. Key Questions
- Hospitals with what types of workforce configuration are more likely to participate in an ACO?
- How do hospitals change their workforce after participating in an ACO?
- Do hospitals not yet participating in ACOs make similar/different changes to workforce as their peers in ACOs?

Hearsay And The Confrontation Clause, Lynn Mclain
All Faculty Scholarship
This speech was delivered to the Wicomico Co. Bar Association on October 28th, 2016. It is an updated version of the 2012 speech, available at http://scholarworks.law.ubalt.edu/all_fac/924/ .
Overview: Only an out-of-court statement ("OCS") offered for the truth of the matter that was being asserted by the out-of-court declarant ("declarant") at the time when s/he made the OCS ("TOMA") = hearsay ("HS"). If evidence is not HS, the HS rule cannot exclude it. The Confrontation Clause also applies only to HS, but even then, only to its subcategory comprising "testimonial hearsay." Naïve Beliefs About The Natural World In A Case Of Childhood Onset Amnesia, William Winter
Publications and Research
The individual profiled here (M.S.) suffered an episode of severe oxygen deprivation (anoxia) at the age of eight, damaging memory relevant structures in the mid-temporal lobes, including the hippocampus bilaterally. The resulting anterograde amnesia was characterized by profound deficits in autobiographical memory, but also a compromised ability to acquire new facts and information (semantic memory), resulting in the formation of idiosyncratic and naïve beliefs about the natural world that have persisted into his adult years. This article presents an interview with M.S. in which many of these idiosyncratic beliefs are detailed, and argues that they can be broadly viewed as …
