The Accreditation Of Religious Law Schools In Canada And The United States, John Boersma Oct 2016

The Accreditation Of Religious Law Schools In Canada And The United States, John Boersma

BYU Law Review

Ongoing litigation in Canada suggests that the legal status of religiously affiliated law schools could be in jeopardy. In Canada, regulatory authorities have sought to deny accreditation status to a religiously affiliated law school (Trinity Western University) due to its commitment to a traditional Christian understanding of marriage. According to Canadian provincial authorities, this commitment has a discriminatory effect on LGBT students. Similar events could potentially occur in the United States. It is possible that American regulatory bodies could seek either to rescind or withhold accreditation from a religiously affiliated law school because of the discriminatory effects of its policies. …

Skeletal muscle is an important site for insulin to regulate blood glucose levels. It is estimated that skeletal muscle is responsible for ~80% of insulin-mediated glucose disposal in the post-prandial period. The classical action of insulin to increase muscle glucose uptake involves insulin binding to insulin receptors on myocytes to stimulate glucose transporter 4 (GLUT 4) translocation to the cell surface membrane, enhancing glucose uptake. However, an additional role of insulin that is often under-appreciated is its action to increase muscle perfusion thereby improving insulin and glucose delivery to myocytes. Either of these responses (myocyte and/or vascular) may be impaired …

The Pig Story "Tiboi Sakkoko"; Storytelling Of Kinship, Memories Of The Past, And Rights To Plots Of Ancestral Land In Mentawai, Juniator Tulius

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines some significant elements of the pig story (tiboi sakkoko). This tale contains crucial information about the collective identity, ancestors and historical events affecting particular Mentawai kin-groups. As families do not preserve their culture and traditions in written form, storytellers of kin-groups have narrated the pig story from generation to generation so as to preserve it carefully. In the course of time, storytellers establish particular ways of telling their stories so as to remember the content and plot of the stories easily. Through the pig story, members of kin groups also recollect their ancestral place of origin and …

Images Of God In Toba Batak Storytelling, Johann Angerler Oct 2016

Images Of God In Toba Batak Storytelling, Johann Angerler

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper examines the ways in which God the Creator, the High God, is described in Toba Batak folk-tales. The sources for this investigation are stories recorded in pre-colonial (around 1850), colonial and post-colonial times (up to 2014). In different stories the High God can appear under various names, forms and gender, and resides in various places never inhabited by humans. Unlike a Deus otiosus, the Toba Batak High God is not "inactive" after creation, but continues to be involved in the life of mankind through local or supra-local manifestations. Although he rules the realm of death, he is nevertheless …

The Influence Of Love Versus Lust On Consumer Judgments, Jung-Yun Kang, Young-Jee Han Oct 2016

The Influence Of Love Versus Lust On Consumer Judgments, Jung-Yun Kang, Young-Jee Han

Asia Marketing Journal

According to previous literature, love involves a feeling of emotional bonds, attachment, and commitment to a specific target from a long-term perspective. In contrast, lust is defined as a sexual desire to engage in sexual activities from a short-term perspective. This research investigates the influence of feelings of love or lust on consumers" long-term benefit-seeking and risk-taking behaviors. Study 1 examined whether consumers" long-term benefit-seeking behaviors depend on feelings of love or lust. As a result, consumers who experienced feelings of love were more likely to prefer products that provide long-term benefits (e.g., a hybrid car) than those who experienced …

Material Evaluation: Self Damping Wire Sd/Acsr Conductor Failures, Daniel F. Weyer

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Following numerous 954 ACSR SD Wire failures from 2010 to 2012, Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) implemented an inspection program to determine the extent of condition for this type of widely used conductor. NPPD transmission system includes over 2000 miles of this particular conductor.

Transmission line splices are installed every 15-20 spans, with failures being located in a span containing a splice. NPPD worked with Kinectrics to complete electromagnetic field inspections for three days in 2013, with retesting performed in 2015. Throughout this inspection of 54 spans of conductor, 36 were found to have deterioration and corrosion.

Sleep As An Evolved Behavior: Ecological Opportunity Costs And Sleep Optimization, Gandhi Yetish Oct 2016

Sleep As An Evolved Behavior: Ecological Opportunity Costs And Sleep Optimization, Gandhi Yetish

Anthropology ETDs

Sleep problems afflict millions world-over. Treating this has been difficult because there is no consensus definition for “normal” sleep. People can vary in their personal sleep need, but the determinants of variation in sleep duration are largely unknown, as is the criteria to determine how much variation is normal. Given that most diurnal mammals (including primates) appear to sleep from sunset to sunrise, the leading explanation for sleep pathology in the post-industrial world has been that electronics, especially light illuminating devices, substantially reduce sleep duration. This assertion has heretofore only been tested experimentally. This research aims to resolve this issue …

A Visualization Model Used For Determining The Effectiveness Of Information Retrieval In A Scientific Database, Nestor L. Osorio, Samantha Johnson Oct 2016

A Visualization Model Used For Determining The Effectiveness Of Information Retrieval In A Scientific Database, Nestor L. Osorio, Samantha Johnson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In this study, we demonstrate that a visualization model can determine the effectiveness of searching a bibliographic database, when three descriptive metadata fields are compared. The Inspec database was searched to create a bibliography of articles about a broad scientific topic, interplanetary travel. We collected metadata from 823 Inspec articles and used the Sci2 Tool to create co-occurrence networks based on subject terms, title keywords, and classification codes from each of the articles. The Watts-Strogatz clustering coefficient model was used to create molecular organization of the networks. This method identified subject domain clusters for each of the three selected metadata …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

This study explored food security status among Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants with prediabetes in relation to food choice decisions over a 30-day benefit cycle that potentially increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes. A cross-sectional, quantitative design based on food choice process model constructs was used. SNAP participants (n = 36) with prediabetes, aged 21–70 years, were recruited as outpatients from Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center and completed self-reported questionnaires on demographics and health, food security, and food frequency over time. Descriptive statistics, Pearson chi square tests, and regression analysis were performed using SPSS. Two post-hoc tests, the …

Haploinsufficiency Of The Myc Regulator Mtbp Extends Survival And Delays Tumor Development In Aging Mice., Brian C. Grieb, Kelli Boyd, Ramkrishna Mitra, Christine M. Eischen

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Alterations of specific genes can modulate aging. Myc, a transcription factor that regulates the expression of many genes involved in critical cellular functions was shown to have a role in controlling longevity. Decreased expression of Myc inhibited many of the deleterious effects of aging and increased lifespan in mice. Without altering Myc expression, reduced levels of Mtbp, a recently identified regulator of Myc, limit Myc transcriptional activity and proliferation, while increased levels promote Myc-mediated effects. To determine the contribution of Mtbp to the effects of Myc on aging, we studied a large cohort of Mtbp heterozygous mice and littermate matched …

Causes, Effects, And Remedies In Conflict Management, Kamran Khan, Syed Karamatullah Hussainy, Yumna Iqbal

The South East Asian Journal of Management

While workplace conflicts have been widely studied in the literature, this research provides a holistic view of the causes and effects of such, and how managers or a management can resolve the conflicts among their teams and organization through a detailed, multidimensional framework carried out on one of the biggest textile firms of Pakistan. With an initial sample of 145 respondents, 37 questionnaires were dropped because of invalid and incomplete answers; therefore, the study was carried out on 108 respondents. Conflicts are a part of human nature, but management should play an important role in dealing with these issues, as …
