Tree/Sidewalk Conflicts: One Way To Save Trees, Megan Dettenmaier, Michael R. Kuhns

All Current Publications

This factsheet describes a project undertaken by USU Forestry Extension and the City of Logan, Utah, to replace damaged sidewalks with flexible sidewalk panels made from 100% recycled plastic. These tiles allowed trees and most tree roots to remain intact. We explain the project methods, as well as the pros and cons of undertaking such a project. These materials and methods have the potential to change sidewalk and urban tree management practices.

The Importance Of Including Co-Factor Information When Reporting Resting Heart Rate, John Hart Jan 2016

The Importance Of Including Co-Factor Information When Reporting Resting Heart Rate, John Hart

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Resting heart rate, sometimes referred to as resting pulse rate (RPR) is taken for various reasons in the various health care professions. As with many physiological tests, there are a number of basic factors that can affect RPR, such as gender and position of the patient during measurement. In most papers, these basic factors are included but in some they are not. If such information is lacking, the meaningfulness of the reported RPR is diminished. The purpose of this manuscript is to highlight the importance of including such information when reporting on RPR data.

An Investigation Of Screening For Medical Referral By Physical Therapists, Heather E. Mount, Cecilia Graham, Diane Clark, David Morris, Kathleen Foley Jan 2016

An Investigation Of Screening For Medical Referral By Physical Therapists, Heather E. Mount, Cecilia Graham, Diane Clark, David Morris, Kathleen Foley

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Screening for medical referral is essential to physical therapist practice; however, no studies have examined medical screening across physical therapy practice settings. The purpose of this study was to determine if physical therapists in a variety of practice settings, given brief clinical vignettes, would screen for medical referral in a similar manner. The Delphi Technique was implemented to establish content validity, although only 2 vignettes reached 100% consensus by the expert panel. After reviewing the vignettes, physical therapist subjects determined if they would provide intervention, provide intervention and refer, or refer before intervention. To determine which variables were associated with …

Is Professionalism Important In Physician Assistant Education?, Susan Ryan

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: This study was designed to demonstrate the importance of a formal professionalism curriculum in physician assistant (PA) education. The PA concept arose from the medical profession, and PA education was designed to follow the medical model of education. Courses have been mandated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to include professionalism. Just as in the curriculum in medical schools, PA educators have been allowed to create their own professionalism curricula. The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) have mandated that professionalism and ethics must …

All The News That’S Fit To Sing: Phil Ochs, Vietnam, And The National Press, Thomas C. Waters

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Though a prolific topical musician and a prominent figure of the antiwar movement during the 1960s, Phil Ochs remains relatively understudied by scholars due to the lure of more commercially successful folk artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. His music facilitated awareness of pressing, and sometimes controversial, issues that would otherwise have not been discussed. Focusing on Ochs’ most musically productive years from 1964 until 1968, which coincide with the years of increased American involvement in Southeast Asia, this thesis analyzes Ochs in a way that has not been attempted before. It places his anti-Vietnam War songs in …

Over the past three decades, government regulation and funding of DNA testing has reshaped the use of genetic evidence across various fields, including criminal law, family law, and employment law. Courts have struggled with questions of when and whether to treat genetic evidence as implicating individual rights, policy trade-offs, or federalism problems. We identify two modes of genetic testing: identification testing, used to establish a person’s identity, and predictive testing, which seeks to predict outcomes for a person. Judges and lawmakers have often drawn a bright line at predictive testing, while allowing uninhibited identity testing. The U.S. Supreme Court in …

The Posthuman Curriculum And The Teacher, John P. Cook Jan 2016

The Posthuman Curriculum And The Teacher, John P. Cook

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The intent of this document is to explore education through a posthumanist lens. More specifically, elements of posthumanism will be used to better understand today’s teachers, to provide several overarching educational goals and curricular imperatives, and to inform pedagogical practice. Several posthumanist themes in particular will serve to unify this rather broad consideration of education at varying levels. One such theme is that of blurring boundaries, calling into question distinctions that have been the source of declines in the health of our bodies, our species, and the life systems of which we are constitutive parts. Distinctions too often lead to …

All Faculty Scholarship

A mixing model derived from first principles describes the bulk density (BD) of intertidal wetland sediments as a function of loss on ignition (LOI). The model assumes that the bulk volume of sediment equates to the sum of self-packing volumes of organic and mineral components or BD = 1/[LOI/k1 + (1-LOI)/k2], where k1 and k2 are the self-packing densities of the pure organic and inorganic components, respectively. The model explained 78% of the variability in total BD when fitted to 5075 measurements drawn from 33 wetlands distributed around the conterminous United States. The values of k1 and …

The Relationship Of Intelligence And Psychopathic Traits To Premeditated And Impulsive Aggression, Elizabeth Witt Jan 2016

The Relationship Of Intelligence And Psychopathic Traits To Premeditated And Impulsive Aggression, Elizabeth Witt

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Psychopathy encompasses two distinct factors, Factor 1 and Factor 2 (Hare, 1991, 2003). Factor 1, is characterized by affective-interpersonal traits of psychopathy (Benning, Patrick, Hicks, Blonigen, & Krueger, 2003 ; Hare 1991, 2003) while Factor 2, is characterized by impulsive antisocial behavior (Benning et al., 2003; Hare 1991, 2003). Research abundantly shows that males tend to score higher on personality traits associated with Factor 2 (Hare, 1991), but there are inconsistencies in the literature regarding females relationship to the psychopathy subtypes. Research shows that there is a significant negative correlation between psychopathy scores and intelligence (O'Kane, Fawcett, & Blackburn, 1996). …

Determining The Effects Of Non-Native Brook Stickleback (Cualea Inconstans) On The Lentic Systems At Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, Cheney, Wa, Jenae N. Yri

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"The introduction of non-native fishes can cause trophic cascades in freshwater habitats; these effects may be amplified in ephemeral/temporary habitats. Non-native brook stickleback fishes (Culaea inconstans) were first documented on the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (WA) in 1999 and are now present in many portions of the refuge. The consequences of their presence on the refuge's perennial/permanent and temporary habitats are poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of my project was to determine if brook stickleback are affecting habitat characteristics that are important for waterfowl nesting success. From April-August 2015, I compared the macro invertebrate and macrophyte community characteristics, fingernail clam …

Effects Of A 10-Week Mental Skills Training Intervention Infused Into A Pre-Existing English Composition Course, Courtney A. Flynn

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Academic performance is a complex phenomenon that is shaped by a wide variety of factors which extend beyond the traditional notions of academic skills and content knowledge (Rosen et al., 2010). Dweck and colleagues (2011) - in coining the term academic tenacity - have suggested that educational interventions which target non-cognitive skills (such as goal-setting, motivation, and resilience) can have transformative effects on students' experience/achievement. However, few in academia have taken Dweck and colleagues (2011) advice and developed interventions specifically targeting this skill set. In this study, "academic tenacity" was taught by infusing mental skills-related material into a pre-existing 10-week …

Documenting Dreams: Undocumented Students In Washington State, M. Elena Calderon Sandoval

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"This research explores immigration policies that have provided access to higher education to undocumented students through the lens of sociocultural identity theory and cultural identification theory. These theories are fundamental in understanding the construction of identity for undocumented students as a result of their interactions with policies and higher education institutions. Pertinent Washington State legislation includes House Bill 1079, which allows for undocumented students to pay in-state tuition, the Real Hope Act that provides financial aid for undocumented students. Federal policy includes the Executive Order Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which allows undocumented students who meet certain requirements to apply …

Sexual Risk Taking Among Young Lgbt Individuals: Examining The Interplay Between Shame Memories And Fears Of Compassion, Elijah N. Johnson Jan 2016

Sexual Risk Taking Among Young Lgbt Individuals: Examining The Interplay Between Shame Memories And Fears Of Compassion, Elijah N. Johnson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Though there is a growing body of research concerning the impact that shame experiences can have on an individual, there is a paucity of research about what variables may mediate the relationship between central, shameful memories and resulting self-harming behavior. The purpose of this study was to explore fears of compassion as a possible mediator between shame memories and individuals' tendency to engage in risky sexual behavior, with an emphasis upon LGBT individuals, who on average are more likely to experience shaming experiences than non LGBT individuals. I predicted that fears of compassion would significantly strengthen the correlation between central …

Invertebrate Drift In The Upper Columbia River With Implications For Young-Of-The-Year White Sturgeon, Ryan W. Reihart

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"White sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) in the upper Columbia River have been in decline for over 60 years and are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Annual spawning produces dispersing larvae; however, recruitment into the juvenile age class has not occurred since the early 1970s. One hypothesis to explain this failure in recruitment is that larvae may not find adequate prey. Little is known about diet and prey availability for white sturgeon larvae, especially in Lake Roosevelt, a reservoir of the Columbia River. The Spokane Tribe of Indians collected littoral and mid-channel benthic drift samples …

Gaining S-T-E-A-M: A General Athletic Department Social Media Strategy, Brendan O'Hallarn, Craig A. Morehead, Shana L. Pribesh

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

In the 10 years since the invention of Facebook, social media sites have become an indispensable part of the marketing and communications strategy employed by a broad spectrum of organizations, including university athletic departments. While social media is almost universally used, a review of academic literature suggests the study of deployment of social media resources, and analysis of their effectiveness, is still very much in preliminary stages. Professional literature on social media use is out in front of peer-reviewed research. Therefore, we use Funk’s framework for social media practices as a point of departure, offering a social media strategy specifically …
