Piglets were allocated to 1 of 3 treatments by body weight and sex, and fed different levels of 0%, 0.15%, and 0.30% of R. oligosporus 1.0 x 106 cfu/g, in a basal diet based on corn-soybean meal for 35 days. Piglets fed diets supplemented with R. oligosporus had higher average daily gain during days 15-35 and 1-35 (quadratic, P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio during 1-35 days showed a significant improvement, as dietary R. oligosporus supplementation increased from 0.15% to 0.30% (linear, P < 0.05). Apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein (CP) was increased at 2 weeks, as dietary R. oligosporus supplementation increased significantly (linear and quadratic, P < 0.05), and ATTD of dry matter, CP, and energy were linearly increased at 5 weeks (P < 0.05). The serum IgG concentration was significantly increased in the R. oligosporus-fed groups (quadratic, P < 0.05). Fecal Lactobacillus counts were significantly increased quadratically and coliform bacteria counts were decreased linearly, as dietary R. oligosporus supplementation increased (P < 0.05). In conclusion, diets containing R. oligosporus may improve the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, IgG concentration, and intestinal environment in weanling pigs.

The Effect Of Yucca Schidigera Powder Added To Lamb Feed On Fatteningperformance, Some Blood Parameters, The Immune System, And Theantioxidative Metabolism Of The Hepatic Tissue, Recep Gümüş, Hali̇t İmi̇k
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, Yucca schidigera powder (YSP) added to lamb feed was investigated for its effects on performance, some blood parameters, the immune system, and the antioxidative metabolism of the hepatic tissue. Throughout a 10-week fattening period, twenty-four 2.5-month-old male Akkaraman lambs were used. Three groups were established, including a control group © and groups YSPI and YSPII, which received a basal ration alone, a basal ration + 100 ppm YSP, and a basal ration + 200 ppm YSP, respectively. The groups did not differ for performance parameters (P > 0.05). While 100 ppm YSP increased serum NH3 levels (P < 0.05), 200 ppm YSP significantly decreased serum cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and Mg levels (P < 0.05). The groups did not differ for antibody titers against the Brucella melitensis vaccine (Rev 1). In groups YSPI and YSPII, hepatic CAT activity and LPO levels were significantly lower than those of Group C (P < 0.01). While the GSH levels of group YSPI were significantly higher than those of groups C and YSPII, the SOD activity of group YSPII was significantly lower than those of groups C and YSPI (P < 0.01). As a result, while YSP did not affect the performance parameters or immune system, it significantly affected NH3 levels, lipid metabolism, and the antioxidant system.

Mastitis, the inflammation of mammary glands, is caused by a wide range of contagious and environmental microbes, whose clearance from the udder is generally dependent on the use of antibiotics. However, antibiotic therapy may result in development of drug-resistant microbes and depress the activity of polymorphonuclear cells. The present study was therefore undertaken to explore the immunotherapeutic potential of an herb, Ocimum sanctum, in mastitis in dairy cows. The study involved twenty HF × Sahiwal lactating dairy cows, each identified with at least one specific subclinical mastitis quarter as per International Dairy Federation criteria. The cows were divided into two …

The efficacy of diets containing 40%-50% wheat, barley, or oat grains, fermented by a solid-state fermentation process, on bird performance, carcass yield, digestive organ development, and intestinal viscosity was tested. Compared with broiler chicks fed unfermented grains, those fed fermented oats had increased feed intake, and treatment with fermented wheat and barley improved the feed conversion ratio at days 21 and 42. Treatment with fermented barley and oats resulted in increased body weight at day 42. Treatment with fermented wheat and oats increased the percentage of carcass yield. Birds fed unfermented grains had highly viscous digesta, not seen among birds …

Although their action in antagonizing arachidonic acid metabolism is a key antiinflammatory effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), these molecules have other antiinflammatory effects that might occur upstream of altered eicosanoid production. We examined the effects of two CLA isomers (c9,t11 and t10,c12 isomers), n-3 PUFA (EPA and DHA), and ΚNF-ΚB inhibitor (ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC)) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced secretion of prostaglandins (PGE2 and PGF2a) by bovine endometrial (BEND) cells. LPS increased PGE2 and PGF2a concentrations in BEND cell-conditioned media in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. The c9,t11 CLA isomer and EPA decreased …

Comparative Evaluation Of Sequence Analysis Of 16s Rrna And Rpobgenes For Identification Of Aquatic Mycobacteria, Fazel Pourahmad, Randolph Harvey Richards
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The nucleotide sequences of partial 16S rRNA and bacterial RNA polymerase ß-subunit (rpoB) genes for 57 mycobacterial strains were determined. Compared to the 16S rRNA gene sequences, variable regions were scattered along the whole fragment sequence, indicating that the rpoB gene is more polymorphic. Unlike 16S rRNA sequences, species variation was observed within M. fortuitum strains. The topology of the rpoB-based phylogenetic tree was almost the same as that of the 16S rRNA sequence analysis. These results suggest that the rpoB gene is a highly conserved gene, and taxonomical studies based on this gene may be comparable with similar studies …

Effects Of Full-Fat Soybean Diet On Performance, Carcass Characteristics,And Fatty Acid Composition Of Hanwoo Steers, Sungil Kim, Jihong Lee, Sungkwon Park
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The effect of dietary full-fat soybean on performance and carcass characteristics of Hanwoo steers was investigated. Thirty steers (653 ± 52.96 kg) were allotted to control and full-fat soybean groups with a 210-day comparative feedlot trial. Steers were fed either the basal finishing diet (control) or control plus 5% full-fat soybean, using Calan gates for individual intake measurement. There was no difference in BW, feed intake, carcass weight, backfat thickness, loin muscle area, or meat color between groups. The average daily gain was greater (P < 0.05) in the soybean group compared to the control group. Steers fed soybean showed a lower feed conversion ratio than the controls. Marbling in the soybean group was greater (P < 0.05) than that in the control group. Supplementary full-fat soybean increased (P < 0.05) crude fat but decreased (P < 0.05) crude protein content in the longissimus muscle. Full-fat soybean increased (P < 0.05) total unsaturated fatty acids, including the levels of oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid but, consequently, decreased (P < 0.05) total saturated fatty acids. Levels of conjugated linoleic acid, and its major precursor trans-vaccenic acid, were significantly increased by soybean supplementation. Our results demonstrate that full-fat soybeans may offer a better way to produce healthier beef with increased unsaturated fatty acids.
