Perceived Emotional Demands-Abilities Fit, James M. Diefendorff, Gary J. Greguras, John Fleenor Jan 2016

Perceived Emotional Demands-Abilities Fit, James M. Diefendorff, Gary J. Greguras, John Fleenor

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The purposes of this paper are to introduce the concept of perceived emotional demands-abilities (ED-A) fit and develop theory about how it relates to other fit perceptions as well as employee well-being and performance outcomes. ED-A fit is defined as the perceived congruence or match between the emotional demands of the job and one's abilities to meet those demands. In two studies using occupationally diverse samples from Western and Eastern cultures, we empirically distinguished perceived ED-A fit from other fit perceptions (i.e. person-organisation, demands-abilities, needs-supplies, person-group, person-supervisor). In addition, across the two studies, we found that perceived ED-A fit accounted …

Wildebeest-associated malignant catarrhal fever (WA-MCF), an acute lymphoproliferative disease of cattle caused by alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1), remains a significant constraint to cattle production in nomadic pastoralist systems in eastern and southern Africa. The transmission of WA-MCF is dependent on the presence of the wildlife reservoir, i.e. wildebeest, belonging to the species Connochaetes taurinus and Connochaetes gnou; hence, the distribution of WA-MCF is largely restricted to Kenya, Tanzania and the Republic of South Africa, where wildebeest are present. WA-MCF is analogous to sheep-associated MCF (SA-MCF) in many aspects, with the latter having sheep as its reservoir host and a more …

Background: The ixodid tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus transmits the apicomplexan protozoan parasite Theileria parva, which causes East coast fever (ECF), the most economically important cattle disease in eastern and southern Africa. Recent analysis of micro- and minisatellite markers showed an absence of geographical and host-associated genetic sub-structuring amongst field populations of R. appendiculatus in Kenya. To assess further the phylogenetic relationships between field and laboratory R. appendiculatus tick isolates, this study examined sequence variations at two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 12S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and the nuclear encoded ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of the …

Fruit Fly Species Composition, Distribution And Host Plants With Emphasis On Mango- Infesting Species, Ivan Rwomushana, Chrysantus M. Tanga Jan 2016

Fruit Fly Species Composition, Distribution And Host Plants With Emphasis On Mango- Infesting Species, Ivan Rwomushana, Chrysantus M. Tanga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Mango is the most widely cultivated fruit tree in tropical and sub-tropical Africa. However, the sustainability of this lucrative business is threatened by infestations of fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) that annually inflict heavy economic losses on the industry. The nutritional quality of different fruit species can influence the survival and fecundity of adult fruit flies. This host-insect interaction determines the species composition, distribution and abundance of the major frugivorous tephritids. The economic impact of fruit fly pest species includes direct yield losses and the loss of export markets due to quarantine restrictions implemented to prevent the entry and establishment of …

Role Of Microsatellite Markers In Molecular Population Genetics Of Fruit Flies With Emphasis On The Bactrocera Dorsalis Invasion Of Africa, Fathiya M. Khamis, Anna R. Malacrida

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Microsatellites, also referred to as short tandem repeats (STRs) or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are short sequences of tandem repeats of 1-6 bp in length in clusters of less than 150 bp flanked by sections of non-repetitive unique sequences that are scattered throughout the nuclear genome. These markers are co-dominant and hypervariable, revealing many alleles per locus; they are inherited in Mendelian fashion making them useful for detecting genetic variability within species. Once isolated and characterized, microsatellites can also be used in closely related taxa. Microsatellites can be amplified, even from highly degraded DNA, and are very simple to score. …

Fruit Fly Nutrition, Rearing And Quality Control, Samira A. Mohamed, Fathiya M. Khamis, Chrysantus M. Tanga Jan 2016

Fruit Fly Nutrition, Rearing And Quality Control, Samira A. Mohamed, Fathiya M. Khamis, Chrysantus M. Tanga

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Tephritid fruit flies are recognized worldwide as an important threat to the horticultural industry. Most of the species belonging to this group are highly polyphagous attacking several important fruits and vegetables. They cause direct damage through larval feeding and indirect losses are associated with quarantine restrictions. The increasing awareness of the damage caused by these fruit flies to the horticultural industry has created a demand for the development of control measures based on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies and the sterile insect technique (SIT). However, success of the majority of these control methods largely depends on the ability to establish …

Maize Landraces Are Less Affected By Striga Hermonthica Relative To Hybrids In Western Kenya, Charles A.O. Midega, John Pickett, Antony Hooper, Jimmy Pittchar, Zeyaur R. Khan Jan 2016

Maize Landraces Are Less Affected By Striga Hermonthica Relative To Hybrids In Western Kenya, Charles A.O. Midega, John Pickett, Antony Hooper, Jimmy Pittchar, Zeyaur R. Khan

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Production of maize in western Kenya is severely constrained by the parasitic weed striga. Although productivity of maize can be improved through adoption of improved varieties, adoption of such varieties remains low in the region, as the majority of smallholder farmers still grow unimproved open-pollinated varieties (landraces). The performance of two improved hybrid varieties was evaluated against six landraces in striga-infested soils in western Kenya. The varieties were planted in plots under natural striga infestation and were supplemented with pot experiments under artificial infestation. Striga emergence was lower in landraces than in the hybrid varieties in both field and pot …

Ratcheting And Energetic Aspects Of Synchronization In Coupled Bursting Neurons, E. Marius Yamakou, E. Maeva Inack, F. M. Moukam Kakmeni

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of two coupled bursting neurons. The Hindmarsh–Rose mathematical model of the neuron subjected to an external periodic stimulus is considered. We transform this model into that of the one-dimensional problem of a particle driven by a periodic external force under the influence of a double-well potential. We study the bifurcation structures, chaotic behavior, and the synchronization dynamics of the transformed model. Numerical simulations reveal the existence of some bifurcation structures including saddle-node, symmetry-breaking, and period-doubling route to chaos. By varying the system’s parameters, we also find thresholds for which the system remains periodic. …

A "Clarion" Call For Embracing Ipe As The Status Quo For Preparing Health Professionals To Engage In Interprofessional Health Research, Kimberly Adams Tufts Jan 2016

A "Clarion" Call For Embracing Ipe As The Status Quo For Preparing Health Professionals To Engage In Interprofessional Health Research, Kimberly Adams Tufts

Ellmer School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Complex health conditions and the social-economic determinants that contribute to disease and injury incidence, prevalence, and health inequalities require multifaceted evidence-based interventions that only interprofessional research teams who collaborate across traditional disciplinary lines can generate. Interprofessionally driven and derived research evidence is the method of du jour. Nonetheless as a whole, health professionals who are often members of interprofessional health research teams are products of educational systems wherein they were educated in disciplinary silos. Health professionals that learn about, with, from, each other during their foundational education will be better prepared to function as interprofessional research team members. With the …

The Effectiveness Of An Anesthesia Handoff Tool: An Electronic Health Record Application To Enhance Patient Safety, Karen Gillikin, Nathaniel Apatov Jan 2016

The Effectiveness Of An Anesthesia Handoff Tool: An Electronic Health Record Application To Enhance Patient Safety, Karen Gillikin, Nathaniel Apatov

Ellmer School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Perioperative patient care handoffs are complex and multidimensional and require accurate attention to detail. Communication failures among healthcare providers increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. Utilizing a standardized handoff tool located within the electronic anesthesia record formalizes the handoff process and improves patient safety. Prior to the introduction of the Electronic Anesthesia Handoff Tool, 82 patient care transfer observations were conducted; subsequent to the launch of the tool, 75 patient care transfer observations were conducted, and then before and after comparisons were made. Descriptive statistics, a two-tailed t-test, and Spearman’s correlations were conducted. Alpha level was set at p < 0.05. There were significantly (p< .05) fewer errors made in all categories of patient information following the introduction of the Electronic Anesthesia Handoff Tool. Though there were trends towards more omissions occurring after 3:00 p.m., the difference in most patient information categories was not significant (p< .05). In addition, there were no differences in omissions related to the severity of patient co-morbidities based on patients’ American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification. This study provided information regarding the incidence of patient information inaccuracies and omissions during patient care transfer before and after implementation of an electronic patient care transfer tool.

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction. While opioid medications are commonly prescribed for management of neuropathic pain (NP), long-term use has been associated with increased risk for overdose, drug interactions and addiction. New strategies are necessary to better manage chronic pain, thereby reducing need for opioid medications and their associated adverse consequences. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an over-the-counter supplement, has shown promise in the treatment of psychiatric and addictive disorders. In addition, NAC has shown promise for reducing physiological signs of NP in laboratory rat models, prompting this study.

Purpose. The present study was an open-label clinical trial of NAC as an adjuvant to opioid treatment for …

Theses and Dissertations

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CONPs) are being investigated for several anti-oxidant applications in medicine. One of their most promising applications is as a radioprotective drug, an area of research in need due to the severe side effects from radiation therapy. In this work, the potential of CONPs as a radioprotective drug is examined using four criteria: favorable biodistribution/pharmacokinetics, low toxicity, ability to protect normal tissue from radiation damage, and lack of protection of tumor. The mechanisms of action of CONPs are also studied. Biodistribution was determined in radiolabeled CONPs with surface coatings including citrate, dextran T10-amine (DT10-NH2), dextran T10-polyethylene …

Toward Epistemological Diversity In Stem-H Grantmaking: Grantors’ And Grantees’ Perspectives On Funding Indigenous Research, Programming, And Evaluation, Jessica C. Venable Jan 2016

Toward Epistemological Diversity In Stem-H Grantmaking: Grantors’ And Grantees’ Perspectives On Funding Indigenous Research, Programming, And Evaluation, Jessica C. Venable

Theses and Dissertations

Mainstream institutions have, historically, dismissed Indigenous worldviews, knowledges, and research approaches (Bowman-Farrell, 2015; Harrington & Pavel, 2013). However, in recent years, a literature has emerged articulating Indigenous research methodologies (IRMs), and their distinctiveness from Western, Eurocentric perspectives on inquiry (Denzin, Lincoln, & Smith, 2008; Kovach, 2009; Smith, 1999 & 2012; Wilson, 2008). This has coincided with increased need for IRM scholars and practitioners to secure extramural funds to support their activities. But questions remain as to how the U.S. federal grant making enterprise has accommodated Indigenous frameworks. This research explores synergies in the ways that grantees, grant makers, and other …

The Influence Of Client-, Family-, And Therapist-Level Pretreatment Characteristics On Therapist Delivery Of Youth Psychotherapy Treatments, Adriana Rodriguez Jan 2016

The Influence Of Client-, Family-, And Therapist-Level Pretreatment Characteristics On Therapist Delivery Of Youth Psychotherapy Treatments, Adriana Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the extent to which pretreatment characteristics influence therapist treatment adherence by using data sampled from a randomized effectiveness trial and an efficacy study. Research suggests that youth-, family-, and therapist-level pretreatment characteristics influence therapist behavior; however, this area is underdeveloped as most studies have focused on externalizing problem areas, family-based approaches, and the use of parent or therapist report to assess for therapist adherence. To date, no research has examined this question with anxiety as the target problem, individual-focused CBT, and with observational therapist adherence data. An observational coding measure, Cognitive-Behavioral …

Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of Endogenous Cannabinoid Degradative Enzyme Inhibitors, Robert Owens Ii Jan 2016

Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of Endogenous Cannabinoid Degradative Enzyme Inhibitors, Robert Owens Ii

Theses and Dissertations

Inhibition of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) or monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), the chief degradative enzymes of N-arachidonoyl ethanolamine (anandamide; AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), respectively, elicits no or partial substitution for Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in drug discrimination procedures. However, combined inhibition of both enzymes fully substitutes for THC, as well as produces a full constellation of cannabimimetic effects. Because no published report to date have investigated whether an inhibitor of endocannabinoid hydrolysis will serve as a discriminative stimulus, the purpose of this doctoral dissertation was to investigate whether C57BL/6J mice would learn to discriminate SA-57 (4-[2-(4-Chlorophenyl)ethyl]-1-piperidinecarboxylic acid 2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl ester), a …

Irreversible Zinc Block Of The Swelling-Activated Chloride Current In Di Tnc1 Astrocytes, Noah Belkhayat Jan 2016

Irreversible Zinc Block Of The Swelling-Activated Chloride Current In Di Tnc1 Astrocytes, Noah Belkhayat

Theses and Dissertations

The swelling-activated chloride current, commonly referred to as ICl,swell, is an outwardly-rectifying anion current that plays an important role in cell volume regulation, among other capacities. Despite several decades of research, the molecular identity of the channel responsible for this chloride current remains controversial. Recent indications that key endogenous sulfhydryl groups are capable of modifying the current led us to assess the effects of several divalent cations, including zinc, on ICl,swell. Zinc is known to tightly associate with sulfhydryl groups such as in zinc finger proteins. We found that extracellular zinc irreversibly inhibited ICl,swell at a site downstream in the …

Probing Allosteric, Partial Inhibition Of Thrombin Using Novel Anticoagulants, Stephen S. Verespy Iii Jan 2016

Probing Allosteric, Partial Inhibition Of Thrombin Using Novel Anticoagulants, Stephen S. Verespy Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Thrombin is the key protease that regulates hemostasis; the delicate balance between procoagulation and anticoagulation of blood. In clotting disorders, like deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, procoagulation is up-regulated, but propagation of clotting can be inhibited with drugs targeting the proteases involved, like thrombin. Such drugs however, have serious side effects (e.g., excessive bleeding) and some require monitoring during the course of treatment. The reason for these side effects is the mechanism by which the drugs’ act. The two major mechanisms are direct orthosteric and indirect allosteric inhibition, which will completely abolish the protease’s activity. Herein we sought an …

Hospital-based palliative care services aim to streamline medical care for patients with chronic and potentially life-limiting illnesses by focusing on individual patient needs, efficient use of hospital resources, and providing guidance for patients, patients’ families and clinical providers toward making optimal decisions concerning a patient’s care. This study examined the nature of palliative care provision in U.S. hospitals and its impact on selected organizational and patient outcomes, including hospital costs, length of stay, in-hospital mortality, and transfer to hospice. Hospital costs and length of stay are viewed as important economic indicators. Specifically, lower hospital costs may increase a hospital’s profit …

High Affinity Block Of Icl,Swell By Thiol-Reactive Small Molecules, Sung H. Park Jan 2016

High Affinity Block Of Icl,Swell By Thiol-Reactive Small Molecules, Sung H. Park

Theses and Dissertations

Ebselen (Ebs) is considered as a glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimetic and primarily thought to function by scavenging intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Previous to our work, Deng et al. (2010a) demonstrated complete block of ICl,swell with 15 microM Ebs following endothelin-1 (ET-1) induced activation of the current in cardiomyocytes. This block was presumed to take effect mainly via the quenching of ROS. Nonetheless, our work with DI TNC1 astrocytes strongly emphasizes that Ebs might function by an alternative mechanism based on its kinetic profile in blocking ICl,swell. Our experiments showed that 45 nM Ebs can fully block …

The Consequences Of Alcohol Mixed With Energy Drink (Amed) Use In College Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Brooke A. Green

Theses and Dissertations

College students with ADHD, but especially those who consume alcohol, may be at jeopardy for experiencing negative educational and occupational outcomes, problematic substance use, criminal offending, and sexual victimization. Alcohol mixed with energy drink (AmED) use is widespread across college campuses and associated with many of these same problematic outcomes. The risk of experiencing these consequences for college students with ADHD may be exacerbated by AmED use given its unique relationship, above and beyond alcohol use, with these variables. This study sought to examine relationships among GPA, lost work performance, hazardous alcohol use, illicit substance use, criminal offending, and sexual …

Evaluating The Pennebaker Paradigm With Bereaved Emerging Adults: Applications Of Text Analysis, Elizabeth A. Collison Jan 2016

Evaluating The Pennebaker Paradigm With Bereaved Emerging Adults: Applications Of Text Analysis, Elizabeth A. Collison

Theses and Dissertations

Bereavement is an important research area as it can result in grief reactions that lead to serious psychological and health consequences, particularly for the at-risk group of emerging adults (Arnett, 2000; Balk, Walker, & Baker, 2010; Fisher, Murray, & Frazer, 1985; Stroebe, Schut, & Stroebe, 2007). Expressive writing is a well-researched intervention for trauma and adjustment, yet research repeatedly has revealed null results with the classic Pennebaker paradigm as a bereavement intervention (Stroebe et al., 2002; Stroebe, Schut, & Stroebe, 2006). It may be premature, however, to conclude expressive writing is ineffective for the bereaved due to limitations in extant …
