Low-Cost Fabrication Of Nanoelectrodes For Electrochemical Applications, Colm Barrett Jan 2016

Low-Cost Fabrication Of Nanoelectrodes For Electrochemical Applications, Colm Barrett

Theses

Compared to traditional macroelectrodes, nanoscale electrodes have tremendous potential when employed in electrochemistry due to enhanced sensitivity arising from increased mass transport to the electrode and low background charging currents. Electrochemically- based diagnostic products such as sensors require sensing elements with greatly enhanced performance and nanoelectrodes offer a viable route to attaining this performance improvement.

Firstly, the fabrication of a polymer microneedle array-based sensor is described and employed to demonstrate a mediated approach for the detection of glucose in solution. This was to demonstrate the feasibility of the system for in-vivo sensing. Cyclic voltammetry was used to achieve detection of …

Suspended Sediment And Nutrient Concentrations And Loads In Two Irish Rivers, Sean T. Harrington

Theses

This thesis presents the results of new and original research on suspended sediment (SS) and nutrient concentrations and loads on the Rivers Bandon and Owenabue in the south of Ireland. It addresses the knowledge gap in SS and nutrient concentration data and in particular SS load/yield estimation methods. A comprehensive database of SS and nutrient concentrations has been established. An investigation into the relationship between water discharge and sediment and nutrient transport is presented and new original relationships between turbidity and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and nutrients are developed. Turbidity-based suspended sediment loads (SSL) are estimated from the continuous turbidity …

Local, State, And Federal Responses To Stalking: Are Anti-Stalking Laws Effective?, Tracey Carter Jan 2016

Local, State, And Federal Responses To Stalking: Are Anti-Stalking Laws Effective?, Tracey Carter

Law Faculty Scholarship

Statistics show that there are currently 7.5 million victims of stalking in the United States each year. The year 2014 commemorated the 20th Anniversary since passage of the federal Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (“VAWA”) that was signed by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994. Passage of this Act marked a key transformation in our nation’s response to the crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The VAWA was established to promote “collaboration among law enforcement, health care providers, nonprofit service groups, community leaders, and the private sector” to combat these crimes. In fact, the VAWA was …

Effect Of Mindfulness Training On Interpretation Exam Performance In Graduate Students In Interpreting, Julie E. Johnson Jan 2016

Effect Of Mindfulness Training On Interpretation Exam Performance In Graduate Students In Interpreting, Julie E. Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations

Many graduate interpreting students struggle because the real-time, interactive nature of interpreting dictates that they be able to regulate their attention across different parallel cognitive activities and manage the inherent stress and unpredictability of the task. Within the framework of Cognitive Load Theory, this mixed-methods study explored the effect of short-term mindfulness training on consecutive interpreting exam performance using a quasi-experimental repeated-measures design. It also examined the relationships among mindfulness, stress, aspects of attention, and interpreting exam performance. The sample included 67 students (age M = 26.9 years; 82% female) across seven language programs (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, …

Implementation And Strategies To Address Sensory Regulation Of Students With And Without Disabilities In Two Kindergarten Classrooms, Yvette Rosil Mere-Cook Jan 2016

Implementation And Strategies To Address Sensory Regulation Of Students With And Without Disabilities In Two Kindergarten Classrooms, Yvette Rosil Mere-Cook

Doctoral Dissertations

Results from previous research studies suggest that inclusive settings benefit all learners. However, general education teachers often do not have built in supports within the classroom to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Implementing a sensory diet curriculum (SDC) is one instructional practice that addresses needs of students with disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder, and could be applied widely for students without disabilities. Sensory regulation is defined as the body’s physiological process of adapting arousal or alertness levels to cope with sensory events and situational demands that occur throughout the day. The purpose of this study was to …

Adaptability In A Bhutanese Refugee Community: Navigating Integration And The Impacts On Nutritional Health After U.S. Resettlement, Chris Grosh Jan 2016

Adaptability In A Bhutanese Refugee Community: Navigating Integration And The Impacts On Nutritional Health After U.S. Resettlement, Chris Grosh

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

Increasing rates of overweight, obesity, and related metabolic diseases documented among refugee communities across the United States necessitate greater attention to how processes of integration impact refugee health. These nutritional health trends (e.g., increasing rates of obesity) suggest potential disconnects between refugees' past environments and their conditions after re-settlement, which may contribute to adverse changes in energy balance (diet and exercise). While Bhutanese refugees were among the largest refugee groups entering the US during the five years leading up to this research, very few studies have examined how they have responded to integration and the impact of this transition on …

Horticultural Technique For Rearing And Redistribution Of The Sessile Biological Control Agent, Rhizaspidiotus Donacis On Its Host Plant, Arundo Donax, Joseph M. Villarreal, John A. Goolsby, Ann T. Vacek, Adalberto A. Perez De Leon, Alexis Racelis

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Arundo donax, giant reed is an invasive weed in the riparian habitats of the Rio Grande Basin. A biological control program using specialist insects from the native range in Mediterranean Europe, including the arundo scale, Rhi-zaspidiotus donacis has been implemented. The arundo scale is a sessile insect that spends most of its life cycle affixed to its host plant, thus creating challenges for its rearing and redistribution to field sites. A horticultural technique was developed which allowed for rearing of the scale on small, potted A. donax microplants, which could later be transplanted to field sites. Female scale reach maturity …

Neuroscience And Behavioral Genetics In Us Criminal Law: An Empirical Analysis, Nita A. Farahany Jan 2016

Neuroscience And Behavioral Genetics In Us Criminal Law: An Empirical Analysis, Nita A. Farahany

Faculty Scholarship

The goal of this study was to examine the growing use of neurological and behavioral genetic evidence by criminal defendants in US criminal law. Judicial opinions issued between 2005–12 that discussed the use of neuroscience or behavioral genetics by criminal defendants were identified, coded and analysed. Yet, criminal defendants are increasingly introducing such evidence to challenge defendants’ competency, the effectiveness of defense counsel at trial, and to mitigate punishment.

Roles Of Nitric Oxide On Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Cancer Stem Cell Phenotypes In Anoikis-Resistant Lung Cancer Cells, Phattrakorn Powan Jan 2016

Roles Of Nitric Oxide On Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Cancer Stem Cell Phenotypes In Anoikis-Resistant Lung Cancer Cells, Phattrakorn Powan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The interconversion between epithelial and mesenchymal is proposed to be a key machinery responsible for metastasis-related deaths. Likewise, cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been proposed to be a key driver of tumor metastasis. The gaseous biological mediator nitric oxide (NO) is also reported to mediate metastasis. However, the linkage between the three events and their control mechanisms under detachment condition are unclear. Since an increase of E-cadherin was frequently found in mesenchymal to epithelial transition (MET) process, we used anoikis resistance H460 lung cancer cells (AR_H460) and a 3D tumor spheroid assay and other CSC-indicating assays to investigate the role …

Gentrification: Yes ... My Community Is Improving, But For Who?, David B. Shepherd Jan 2016

Gentrification: Yes ... My Community Is Improving, But For Who?, David B. Shepherd

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that while gentrification brings economic benefits, it disproportionately harms low-income families by displacing them and eroding their community fabric. The author advocates for regulatory measures, such as growth control and zoning laws, to mitigate these negative effects and preserve affordable housing and community culture.

Same-Sex Marriage, Italian Style, Matteo M. Winkler Jan 2016

Same-Sex Marriage, Italian Style, Matteo M. Winkler

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines Italy's exceptionalism in same-sex marriage rights through the lens of the Bernaroli case, highlighting the country's divergence from European legal trends. It argues that the Italian Constitutional Court's heteronormative interpretation of Article 29 of the Constitution, which prohibits same-sex marriage, reflects a broader resistance to recognizing same-sex unions despite international human rights standards. The case underscores the tension between domestic law and supranational legal frameworks, such as rulings from the European Court of Human Rights, which have increasingly supported the recognition of same-sex relationships. The article concludes that while Italy has made limited progress with its 2016 …

A Hurdle Too High: The Unconstitutionality Of Mandatory Ultrasounds Under Casey's Undue Burden Standard, Katarzyna Kordas

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that mandatory ultrasound laws impose an undue burden on women seeking abortions, violating the constitutional standard established in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. These laws, often enacted to dissuade women from proceeding with abortions, are deemed medically unnecessary and unconstitutional as they obstruct women's reproductive rights.

Thou Shall Not Adopt: Sexual Orientation Discrimination In The Adoption Process, Peter Gallucci Jan 2016

Thou Shall Not Adopt: Sexual Orientation Discrimination In The Adoption Process, Peter Gallucci

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note addresses the issue of sexual orientation discrimination in the adoption process, highlighting how religious-based adoption agencies often deny services to LGBTQ+ couples, despite the growing need for foster care placements. It critiques current laws that permit such discrimination and proposes an enhanced version of the Every Child Deserves a Family Act to ensure equal adoption rights while mitigating the impact on states and foster children.

Resurgence Of Acropora Corals On Mid Shelf Patch Reefs, Southwater Caye Marine Reserve, Central Belize, Jillian J. Keefer Jan 2016

Resurgence Of Acropora Corals On Mid Shelf Patch Reefs, Southwater Caye Marine Reserve, Central Belize, Jillian J. Keefer

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Acropora cervicornis (staghorn) and Acropora palmata (elkhorn) are ecologically important corals that grow quickly and provide topography and refuges for fish and invertebrates. Historically, Acropora was the most abundant coral in shallow patch reef zones in the Caribbean. During the 1980s, white band disease eliminated most Acropora causing a loss in rugosity and an increase of macroalgae on many reefs. Although Acropora remains rare throughout most of the Caribbean, this study documents its partial comeback and possible limiting factors in Southwater Caye Marine Reserve (SWCMR), Central Belize. Patch reefs in the reserve averaged 19% live coral cover with A. palmata …
