Infection of the central nervous system in pediatric patients have a high mortality as well as acute and chronic neurological sequelae. Signs of the disease are unclear, so cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) test is used as a gold standard for diagnosis, but the investigation has faced many obtacles. Empiric antibiotic therapy is the key factor in reducing morbidity and mortality. Microbiological culture result is obtained within 5-7 days. The effectiveness of empirical antibiotic use is questionable. Therefore, other investigations are conducted to determine the effectiveness of antibiotics by using one marker, the CRP. This study was to analyze CRP level in …

PCOS is an ovarian dysfunction syndrome which characterized by the present of unovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology. The main cause of PCOS is still unclear, but many studies report that genetic factor have a great role. There are also two big concept in PCOS, hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance. Previous research by Ayaz et al (2013) has shown that metformin was given if there has been a resistance of clomiphene citrate. This study was designed to provide metformin and clomiphene citrate combination from the early administration to determine the effectiveness of the combination therapy. The objective of this study is …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Media Reporting Of Police Involved Shootings In Florida, John L. Brown
An Exploratory Analysis Of Media Reporting Of Police Involved Shootings In Florida, John L. Brown
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this study is on media reporting of police involved shootings in Florida. Given that knowledge of killings committed by law enforcement are frequently restricted to what people get from news sources, it is important to investigate the way these messages are being communicated. An exploratory analysis of 199 articles and transcripts covering 86 cases relevant to deadly use of force by police officers as reported from 2013 to 2015 provided the primary data source. The analysis engaged a critical examination of media content and goodness of fit models to identify commonalities used by the media when reporting …
Association Between Folate Levels And Preterm Birth In Tampa, Florida, Carolyn Heeraman
Association Between Folate Levels And Preterm Birth In Tampa, Florida, Carolyn Heeraman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Preterm birth is one of the leading causes of perinatal mortality and morbidity and poses extensive economic liability. The rate of preterm births globally is approximately 11.1%, and in the US, the preterm birth rate has been estimated to be 12-13%. Folate and B12 requirements increase during pregnancy as a result of increased cell division to accommodate maternal and fetal growth; inadequate levels can result in placental abnormalities and thus present implications for preterm birth.
Objective: To investigate the association between red blood cell (RBC) folate and B12 concentrations with the risk of preterm birth.
Methods: Study …

Trophic Ecology And Habitat Use Of Atlantic Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus ), Benjamin Neal Kurth
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fish can have complex life histories and use multiple habitats and resources throughout their life span. Consequently, their life histories are often poorly understood. The Atlantic Tarpon, Megalops atlanticus, is a large, typically migratory, elopomorph fish that is both ecologically and economically important. Atlantic Tarpon are under threat due to regional exploitation, loss of natal and juvenile habitat, poor water management, and offshore impacts. In addition, little is known about its lifelong habitat and resource use. In Chapter 1, I used stable isotope analysis of eye lens δ13C and δ15N values to explore patterns in …

Hiv/Stis And Intimate Partner Violence: Results From The Togo 2013-2014 Demographic And Health Surveys, Anthony H. Nguyen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Among clinic based studies, intimate partner violence (IPV) has been shown to contribute to HIV/AIDS among young girls and women. Results from studies among the general population have been less consistent. This study evaluated the associations between HIV infection, any sexually transmitted infections, and IPV in a population based sample of Togolese women.
Methods: Data from the Togo 2013-2014 Demographic and Health Surveys were utilized for these analyses. Women aged 15-49 who were currently married, had HIV test results and answered the Domestic Violence Module were analyzed (n = 2386). Generalized linear mixed-models adjusting for sociodemographic variables, risk behaviors, …

Case Report: Use Of Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (Iabp) In High-Risk Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Procedure, Yudi Her Oktaviono
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is often used in patients who undergo high risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures, particularly if associated with hemodynamic impairment. However, this device is still underused in this center. In this case report, a 65-year old male patient with triple vessel disease (chronic total occluded left anterior descending artery-LAD, and significant stenoses of left circumflex and right coronary arteries), low ejection fraction and preprocedure blood pressure, was reported to have IABP support applied before PCI. The intervention to penetrate the occluded LAD was not success. After procedure, the patient was observed in intensive care unit. Weaning …

Soil Microbial Biomass And Function Are Altered By 12 Years Of Crop Rotation, Marshall D. Mcdaniel, A. Stuart Grandy
Faculty Publications
Declines in plant diversity will likely reduce soil microbial biomass, alter microbial functions, and threaten the provisioning of soil ecosystem services. We examined whether increasing temporal plant biodiversity in agroecosystems (by rotating crops) can partially reverse these trends and enhance soil microbial biomass and function. We quantified seasonal patterns in soil microbial biomass, respiration rates, extracellular enzyme activity, and catabolic potential three times over one growing season in a 12-year crop rotation study at the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station LTER. Rotation treatments varied from one to five crops in a 3-year rotation cycle, but all soils were sampled under …

From Recovery To Discovery: Ethnic American Science Fiction And (Re)Creating The Future, Daoine S. Bachran
From Recovery To Discovery: Ethnic American Science Fiction And (Re)Creating The Future, Daoine S. Bachran
English Language and Literature ETDs
My project assesses how science fiction by writers of color challenges the scientific racism embedded in genetics, nuclear development, digital technology, and molecular biology, demonstrating how these fields are deployed disproportionately against people of color. By contextualizing current scientific development with its often overlooked history and exposing the full life cycle of scientific practices and technological changes, ethnic science fiction authors challenge science’s purported objectivity and make room for alternative scientific methods steeped in Indigenous epistemologies. The first chapter argues that genetics is deployed disproportionally against black Americans, from the pseudo-scientific racial classifications of the nineteenth century and earlier through …
