Overlap In The Seasonal Infection Patterns Of Avian Malaria Parasites And West Nile Virus In Vectors And Hosts, Matthew Medeiros, Robert Ricklefs, Jeffrey Brawn, Marilyn Ruiz, Tony Goldberg, Gabriel Hamer

Biology Department Faculty Works

Multiple vector-borne pathogens often circulate in the same vector and host communities, and seasonal infection dynamics influence the potential for pathogen interactions. Here, we explore the seasonal infection patterns of avian malaria (Haemosporida) parasites (Plasmodium and Haemoproteus) and West Nile virus (WNV) in birds and mosquitoes in suburban Chicago. We show that both pathogens vary seasonally in Culex mosquitoes and avian hosts, but that patterns of covariation are complex. Different putative Plasmodium species varied asynchronously across the season in mosquitoes and birds, suggesting that different forces may govern their transmission. Infections of Culex mosquitoes with Plasmodium parasites were positively associated …

The Anchor, Volume 130.09: November 2, 2016, Hope College

The Anchor: 2016

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Magazine Influence On Body Dissatisfaction: Fashion Vs. Health?, Paulina Swiatkowski

Faculty Publications

Fashion magazines have been shown to have a negative relationship with body dissatisfaction and psychological health, while the effects of health magazines on body dissatisfaction and psychological health have mainly been studied with men. However, because of gender differences, health magazine consumption effects on men cannot be applied equally to women. Therefore, the present study uses sociocultural theory to study health magazine and possible similarities to fashion magazine effects on women’s body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness. Sociocultural attitude toward appearance is then explored as a mediator and potential moderator in the established relationship between magazine consumption and psychological health, …

Resistance Of Escherichia Coli From Rectal Swab Culture In Hemato-Oncology Wards, Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, Rahmi Rusanti, Igaa Putri Sri Rejeki

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Malignant hematology patients in the hospital are particularly susceptible to infection associated with endogenous microorganism originating from their own body. The most common etiology of infection is bacteria from gastrointestinal tract. Escherichia coli is a gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacteria, and part of the intestinal normal flora. However, E. coli is the most common cause of nosocomial infection. Resistance of E. coli to antibiotics has been widely reported. The aim of this study was to identify the development of antibiotic resistant properties of Escherichia coli from rectal swab of malignant hematology pediatric patients. A descriptive study of collected secondary data on …

Identification Of Hot Spots In Protein Structures Using Gaussian Network Model And Gaussian Naive Bayes, H Zhang, T Jiang, Guogen Shan Nov 2016

Identification Of Hot Spots In Protein Structures Using Gaussian Network Model And Gaussian Naive Bayes, H Zhang, T Jiang, Guogen Shan

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Residue fluctuations in protein structures have been shown to be highly associated with various protein functions. Gaussian network model (GNM), a simple representative coarse-grained model, was widely adopted to reveal function-related protein dynamics. We directly utilized the high frequency modes generated by GNM and further performed Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) to identify hot spot residues. Two coding schemes about the feature vectors were implemented with varying distance cutoffs for GNM and sliding window sizes for GNB based on tenfold cross validations: one by using only a single high mode and the other by combining multiple modes with the highest frequency. …

A Mouse Model For Binge-Level Methamphetamine Use, Shkelzen Shabani, Sydney K. Houlton, Laura Hellmuth, Erika Mojica, John R K Mootz, Zhen Zhu, Cheryl Reed, Tamara J. Phillips

Peer Reviewed Articles

Binge/crash cycles of methamphetamine (MA) use are frequently reported by individuals suffering from MA use disorders. A MA binge is self-reported as multiple daily doses that commonly accumulate to 800 mg/day (~10 mg/kg/day for a 170 pound human). A genetic animal model with a similar vulnerability to binge-level MA intake is missing. We used selectively bred MA high drinking (MAHDR) and low drinking (MALDR) mouse lines to determine whether several procedural variations would result in binge-level MA intake. Data were also collected in two progenitor populations of the MA drinking lines, the DBA/2J (D2) strain and the F2 cross of …

One Site To Rule Them All Redux: The Second Round Of Usability Testing Of A Responsively Designed Website, Junior R. Tidal

Publications and Research

This article examines the usability testing of a responsively redesigned library Web site. Responsive design provides a unified user experience regardless of the device used to view a site. The study's aim is twofold: to determine if the responsively designed site and its external online services support users’ information seeking needs, and to discover if there is a singular experience across different devices. A cognitive walkthrough was the main testing instrument used in gathering input. Over two rounds of testing, students of various class years and technological skill from the New York City of Technology (City Tech), CUNY participated in …

Predictive Mapping Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis At The County Level In The State Of Florida, Ali Moradi Nov 2016

Predictive Mapping Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis At The County Level In The State Of Florida, Ali Moradi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: One of the major barriers to developing an accurate tuberculosis (TB) surveillance program for Florida is the design and implementation of a sampling system that will adequately monitor and predict varying sizes and characteristics of county-level vulnerable endemic sub-populations and their explanatory covariates (e.g., living or working in a residential care facility). The aim of this research study is to envision an endemic, tuberculosis-related web-based interface for use by public health officials in the State of Florida which includes generating essential information such as a real-time syndrome-based reporting to regulate automated and immediate 'Alerts' to public health officials, doctors, …

Towards Sustaniable Information For Households’ Food Security In Kaduna State, Nigeria, Michael Esew Nov 2016

Towards Sustaniable Information For Households’ Food Security In Kaduna State, Nigeria, Michael Esew

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Food security is one of the targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is widely considered a useful measure for evaluating the progress of a country in terms of wellbeing. Despite, various concern by governments all over the world on ensuring that every household can at least provide three square meals per day, food insecurity continues to be a major development problem across the globe, undermining people’s health, productivity, and often their very survival. Evidence suggests that Nigerians food production is increasing at less than 2.0% while population growth rate is estimated to be 2.5% per annum. The suggested …

C-Reactive Protein (Crp) As A Supporting Marker Of Antibiotic Effectiveness On Central Nervous System (Cns) Infections, Melawati Olevianingrum, Yulistiani Yulistiani, Darto Saharso, Nun Zairina

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Infection of the central nervous system in pediatric patients have a high mortality as well as acute and chronic neurological sequelae. Signs of the disease are unclear, so cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) test is used as a gold standard for diagnosis, but the investigation has faced many obtacles. Empiric antibiotic therapy is the key factor in reducing morbidity and mortality. Microbiological culture result is obtained within 5-7 days. The effectiveness of empirical antibiotic use is questionable. Therefore, other investigations are conducted to determine the effectiveness of antibiotics by using one marker, the CRP. This study was to analyze CRP level in …
