Exploring Feature Sets For Turkish Word Sense Disambiguation, Bahar İlgen, Eşref Adali, Ahmet Cüneyd Tantuğ Jan 2016

Exploring Feature Sets For Turkish Word Sense Disambiguation, Bahar İlgen, Eşref Adali, Ahmet Cüneyd Tantuğ

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an exploration and evaluation of a diverse set of features that influence word-sense disambiguation (WSD) performance. WSD has the potential to improve many natural language processing (NLP) tasks as being one of the most crucial steps in the area. It is known that exploiting effective features and removing redundant ones help improving the results. There are two groups of feature sets to disambiguate senses and select the most appropriate ones among a set of candidates: collocational and bag-of-words (BoW) features. We introduce the effects of using these two feature sets on the Turkish Lexical Sample Dataset (TLSD), …

An Improved Real-Time Adaptive Kalman Filter With Recursive Noise Covariance Updating Rules, Iyad Hashlamon, Kemaletti̇n Erbatur Jan 2016

An Improved Real-Time Adaptive Kalman Filter With Recursive Noise Covariance Updating Rules, Iyad Hashlamon, Kemaletti̇n Erbatur

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The Kalman filter (KF) is used extensively for state estimation. Among its requirements are the process and observation noise covariances, which are unknown or partially known in real-life applications. Uncertain and biased values of the covariances result in KF performance degradation or divergence. Unlike previous methods, we are using the idea of the recursive estimation of the KF to develop two recursive updating rules for the process and observation covariances, respectively designed based on the covariance matching principles. Each rule has a tuning parameter that enhances its flexibility for noise adaptation. The proposed adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) proves itself to …

Comprehensive Review Of Association Estimators For The Inference Of Gene Networks, Zeyneb Kurt Yavuz, Ni̇zametti̇n Aydin, Gökmen Altay

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Gene network inference (GNI) algorithms allow us to explore the vast amount of interactions among the molecules in cells. In almost all GNI algorithms the main process is to estimate association scores among the variables of the dataset. However, there is no commonly accepted estimator to compute association scores for the current GNI algorithms. In this paper the association estimators that might be used in GNI applications are reviewed. The aim is to prepare a comprehensive and comparative review of all the important association estimators available in the literature. We performed this main aim by presenting, classifying, comparing, and discussing …

An Innovative Peak Detection Algorithm For Photoplethysmography Signals: An Adaptive Segmentation Method, Ahmet Reşi̇t Kavsaoğlu, Kemal Polat, Mehmet Recep Bozkurt

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The purpose of this paper is twofold. The first purpose is to detect M-peaks from raw photoplethysmography (PPG) signals with no preprocessing method applied to the signals. The second purpose is to estimate heart rate variability (HRV) by finding the peaks in the PPG signal. HRV is a measure of the fluctuation of the time interval between heartbeats and is calculated based on time series between strokes derived from electrocardiogram (ECG), arterial pressure (AP), or PPG signals, separately. PPG is a method widely used to measure blood volume of tissue on the basis of blood volume change in every heartbeat. …

Stress-Induced Anxiety And Fos Immunoreactivity In Adulthood Following Chronic Juvenile Methylphenidate Exposure, Mercedes Mcwaters Jan 2016

Stress-Induced Anxiety And Fos Immunoreactivity In Adulthood Following Chronic Juvenile Methylphenidate Exposure, Mercedes Mcwaters

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Methylphenidate (MPH), or Ritalin, is the most commonly prescribed psychostimulant for the treatment of Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Research has established that MPH alleviates symptoms of ADHD short-term in humans, but research on the long-term effects after juvenile exposure has yielded mixed results. One possible long-term effect of MPH treatment is the alteration of neural circuits, especially dopaminergic and noradrenergic circuits projecting to the prefrontal cortex that are implicated in ADHD symptomatology and are the targets of MPH treatment. Long-term alterations of these circuits may impact coping with stress later life as these same circuits mediate the stress response. Specific …

More than ever, creativity is a necessary outcome for education. A global and networked society requires U.S. citizens to innovate within a variety of complex economic, political, and social realities. The necessity of creativity highlights a crucial role for art education in contemporary education. However, there is a lack of clarity about what constitutes creativity. In particular, there is a lack of knowledge about how research, policy, and the life contexts of art educators relate to the operationalization of creativity in practice. This study addresses an area of neglect by exploring relationships among categories of creativity in research, federal and …

Dancing With Mnemic Neglect : New Insights Into The Paradigm, Bettina Zengel Jan 2016

Dancing With Mnemic Neglect : New Insights Into The Paradigm, Bettina Zengel

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Self-protection motivation is seen as a cause of the mnemic neglect phenomenon, the reduced recall for self-threatening information as compared to other-referent negative information. The phenomenon is well established, but there are still many areas that would benefit from further exploration. For example, while several moderators of the mnemic neglect phenomenon have been found, regulatory focus has not yet been considered. Furthermore, the assumed cognitive processes that underlie the mnemic neglect phenomenon are generally seen as occurring because of processes occurring during the encoding phase of information processing. However, it is possible that recall processes that occur after information storage …

Religiosity And Male-To-Female Partner Violence : Exploring Female Submission In Context, Melissa D. Mckenzie Jan 2016

Religiosity And Male-To-Female Partner Violence : Exploring Female Submission In Context, Melissa D. Mckenzie

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Feminist theories have long proposed that conservative religious beliefs influence male-to-female partner violence (MFPV) by contributing to a belief system supporting male dominance and female submissiveness in relationships. The present study empirically assessed this proposed relationship, exploring the extent to which men's beliefs about female submission and men's use of interpersonal control contribute to the theoretical link between conservative religiosity and MFPV within heterosexual marriages. The extent to which men's perceptions of their wives beliefs about female submission contribute to MFPV was also assessed. A multiple mediation model was supported in which 1) men's beliefs about female submission mediated the …

Resistant Acts : Challenges Of Older And Chronically Ill Mexican Women Living In 21st-Century United States, Lucy Sosa

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Older and chronically ill Mexican women living in a 21st century working class neighborhood confront many challenges. The challenge of being older and chronically ill are exacerbated by the multiple socially constructed identities of difference they embody, such as, race, gender, class, linguistic competence, immigration and educational status. In their search for health and wellbeing, these embodied differences constructed for the women a number of care-searching, care-receiving and health outcome experiences that reveal the effect these differences can have in the lives of members of a vulnerable population. The women's experiences also reveal their determination to gain access to affordable, …

Professional Identity Of Student Conduct Administrators, Brian M. Glick Jan 2016

Professional Identity Of Student Conduct Administrators, Brian M. Glick

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The functions of a Student Conduct Administrator (SCA) have existed on college campuses since the first institutions of higher education were established. Colleges and universities now employ specialized staff members to fulfill this role. The fundamentals of the position have changed only minimally over the years, but these responsibilities continue to become more complex. The question to be answered is whether or not the practice of student conduct administration constitutes a profession. If student conduct administration qualifies as a profession, SCAs hold a specific professional identity. This project provides the results of a national survey of SCAs who described how …

Hepatocyte Specific Gp73/Golm1 Knockout Mice And Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cell Lines Provide Insights Into The Potential Roles Of Gp73 Hcc Serum Biomarker, Gunisha Arora

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Golgi Protein -- 73kDa (GP73/GOLM1) is a resident cis-Golgi Type II membrane protein that is nearly undetectable in normal hepatocytes, but its expression increases in hepatocytes during hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its serum levels increase in patients with chronic hepatitis C infection and HCC, yet its biological role in the liver and in the pathogenesis of HCC remains unclear. In order to investigate possible biological roles for GP73, hepatocyte-specific GOLM1 null mice (C57BL/6) were created using the Cre-loxP system, with "floxed" GOLM1 gene exon 3 and Cre recombinase driven by the albumin promoter. Mouse genotypes were confirmed by PCR analysis. …

Small Mammal Responses To Bison Reintroduction And Prescribed Fire In One Of The World's Most Threatened Ecosystems, Angela Marie Burke

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The restoration of tallgrass prairies is often centered on reestablishing the native vegetation structure with only minor efforts directed to the fauna that inhabit these areas. The reinstatement of traditional disturbance regimes of fire and grazing bison is a critical component to the active management of tallgrass prairies, and its subsequent effects on both flora and fauna in remnant prairies is well documented. Understanding the role of small mammal populations and how they are affected by varying grazing and fire management strategies can assist in the holistic evaluation of restoration efforts in sites currently undergoing active restoration. Peromyscus and Microtus …

Relational Uncertainty Between Frenemies In Forensics, Benjamin Davis Jan 2016

Relational Uncertainty Between Frenemies In Forensics, Benjamin Davis

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Intercollegiate forensics competition is a highly complex network of interconnected individuals. This study proposes that various contextual factors surrounding forensics competition may influence the communication between friends who compete against each other on the circuit ("frenemies"). Specifically, this study uses the lens of relational uncertainty to determine the significance and communicative behaviors of frenemies when faced with uncertainty-increasing events. Quantitative survey data were collected from 93 participants, in which they were instructed to complete various sets of scales related to team culture, the types of uncertainty, uncertainty reducing strategies, and other relational variables. Qualitative data were also collected from participant …

Without Deference, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski Jan 2016

Without Deference, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski

Journal Articles

This essay explores what judicial review of agency interpretations of law would look like if the Supreme Court abandoned Chevron deference in favor de novo review. It concludes that such an alternative regime has appealing features, but may not bring as much immediate, practical change as many critiques or defenses of Chevron presume. The largest change would come from how we think about law and policy in the administrative state. The theoretical scaffolding that would uphold a regime of non-deferential review is far more classical in cast than the moderate legal realism underwriting Chevron. The more traditional character of this …

'"Ideology" Or "Situation Sense"? An Experimental Investigation Of Motivated Reasoning And Professional Judgment, Dan M. Kahan, David Hoffman, Danieli Evans, Neal Devins, Eugene Lucci, Katherine Cheng

Faculty Publications

This Article reports the results of a study on whether political predispositions influence judicial decisionmaking. The study was designed to overcome the two principal limitations on existing empirical studies that purport to find such an influence: the use of nonexperimental methods to assess the decisions of actual judges; and the failure to use actual judges in ideologically-biased-reasoning experiments. The study involved a sample of sitting judges (n = 253), who, like members of a general public sample (n = 800), were culturally polarized on climate change, marijuana legalization and other contested issues. When the study subjects were assigned to analyze …

Towards An Understanding Of Pharmacologically Induced Intracellular Changes In Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors: A Fluorescence Microscopy Approach, Ashley M. Loe Jan 2016

Towards An Understanding Of Pharmacologically Induced Intracellular Changes In Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors: A Fluorescence Microscopy Approach, Ashley M. Loe

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

Upregulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) is a well-documented response to chronic nicotine exposure. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors are pentameric ligand-gated ion channels consisting of alpha (α2-10) and beta (β2-4) subunits. Nicotine, an agonist of nAChRs, alters trafficking and assembly of some subtypes of nAChRs, leading to an increase in expression of high sensitivity receptors on the plasma membrane. These physiological changes in nAChRs are believed to contribute to nicotine addiction, although the mechanism of these processes has not been resolved. Recently, many studies have converged on the idea that nicotine induces upregulation by an intracellular mechanism. In this dissertation, expression …

Three Essays On Health Economics, Mojisola O.A. Tayo Jan 2016

Three Essays On Health Economics, Mojisola O.A. Tayo

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three essays examining topics in health economics. The first essay examines the impact of education on 10-year mortality rates of minorities in the United States. I use the states' compulsory education laws to instrument the level of education in my cohort study of the effect of education on the mortality rates of minority groups (Blacks, Asians and Hispanics) born in the early twentieth century. I find that an increase in years of education significantly decreases the mortality rates for the White and Black populations, but not for the Asian and Hispanic populations. The second essay explores …
