Pharmacological And Genetic Modulation Of Rev-Erb Activity And Expression Affects Orexigenic Gene Expression, Ariadna Amador, Yongjun Wang, Subhashis Banerjee, Theodore M. Kameneka, Laura A. Solt, Thomas P. Burris

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

The nuclear receptors REV-ERBα and REV-ERBβ are transcription factors that play pivotal roles in the regulation of the circadian rhythm and various metabolic processes. The circadian rhythm is an endogenous mechanism, which generates entrainable biological changes that follow a 24-hour period. It regulates a number of physiological processes, including sleep/wakeful cycles and feeding behaviors. We recently demonstrated that REV-ERB-specific small molecules affect sleep and anxiety. The orexinergic system also plays a significant role in mammalian physiology and behavior, including the regulation of sleep and food intake. Importantly, orexin genes are expressed in a circadian manner. Given these overlaps in function …

Modifying M-44s To Reduce Risk Of Activation By Swift Fox, Julie K. Young Jan 2016

Modifying M-44s To Reduce Risk Of Activation By Swift Fox, Julie K. Young

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

M-44s are spring-powered sodium cyanide ejectors commonly used in the United States to manage livestock depredation by coyotes (Canis latrans). While highly selective for canids, improvements could reduce risk to nontarget canids, especially State-Endangered or -Threatened canids such as the swift fox (Vulpes velox). In 2012–2013, we tested M-44s set at modified heights to determine whether height modifications reduced risk to swift foxes without reducing activation rates by coyotes. We presented captive coyotes housed at the USDA National Wildlife Research Center’s Predator Research Facility, Millville, Utah, USA, with M-44s at various test heights to determine a …

The Migratory Bird And Habitat Research Laboratory And The Accelerated Research Program, Richard A. Coon Jan 2016

The Migratory Bird And Habitat Research Laboratory And The Accelerated Research Program, Richard A. Coon

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (Patuxent) housed two important programs that were not supervised through the office of the Director of Patuxent during the 1960s and 1970s. Although they received administrative support from Patuxent, they were supervised from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) headquarters in Washington, D.C. One, the Migratory Bird Populations Station (MBPS), was established in 1961; the other, the Migratory Bird and Habitat Research Laboratory (MBHRL), was established in 1972 (Perry, 2004). This chapter briefly discusses MBPS and how some of its functions were transferred to MBHRL when this new laboratory was created.

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Subtype H7 avian–origin influenza A viruses (AIVs) have caused at least 500 confirmed human infections since 2003 and culling of >75 million birds in recent years. Here we antigenically and genetically characterized 93 AIV isolates from North America (85 from migratory waterfowl [1976–2010], 7 from domestic poultry [1971–2012], and 1 from a seal [1980]). The hemagglutinin gene of these H7 viruses are separated from those from Eurasia. Gradual accumulation of nucleotide and amino acid substitutions was observed in the hemagglutinin of H7 AIVs from waterfowl and domestic poultry. Genotype characterization suggested that H7 AIVs in wild birds form diverse and …

Transcriptional Profiling Of Ileocecal Valve Of Holstein Dairy Cows Infected With Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Randy J. Hempel, J. P. Bannantine, Judith R. Stabel Jan 2016

Transcriptional Profiling Of Ileocecal Valve Of Holstein Dairy Cows Infected With Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Randy J. Hempel, J. P. Bannantine, Judith R. Stabel

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Johne’s disease is a chronic infection of the small intestine caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), an intracellular bacterium. The events of pathogen survival within the host cell(s), chronic inflammation and the progression from asymptomatic subclinical stage to an advanced clinical stage of infection, are poorly understood. This study examines gene expression in the ileocecal valve (ICV) of Holstein dairy cows at different stages of MAP infection. The ICV is known to be a primary site of MAP colonization and pro-vides an ideal location to identify genes that are relevant to the progression of this disease. RNA was prepared …

Differential Response: Misrepresentation Of Cps Investigation And Case Fact Finding, Frank E. Vandervort, Ronald C. Hughes Jan 2016

Differential Response: Misrepresentation Of Cps Investigation And Case Fact Finding, Frank E. Vandervort, Ronald C. Hughes

Articles

Traditionally, a host of necessary case fact-finding responsibilities and activities has been used by public Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies to ensure that they can achieve mandates to protect children from maltreatment as well as to strengthen and preserve the families of atrisk children. The primary CPS case fact-finding activities include risk assessment, investigation (both CPS and forensic), and family assessment. Information collected while engaged in any one of these three activities will often be relevant and important to the others. However, each case fact-finding activity also requires specific inquiry to elicit information that is essential to achieve its distinct …

Age-Related Hearing Loss: Inhibition--Excitation Balance In The Rat Inferior Colliculus, Sydney Cason 16

Honor Scholar Theses

Aging is an increasingly important research topic due to the aging populations in the United States and other developed countries. One aspect of aging, age-related hearing loss, is caused by changes in the peripheral and the central auditory systems. The age-related changes in the central auditory system, including the integrating midbrain area inferior colliculus (IC), are not well understood. Studies have revealed that GABA levels in the IC decrease with age. However, no studies have quantified the age-related changes in IC glutamate levels or the relationship between GABA and glutamate levels in the aging IC. This study aimed to elucidate …

Joining Forces:Establishing A Cardio-Oncology Program, Caroline Austin-Mattison Jan 2016

Joining Forces:Establishing A Cardio-Oncology Program, Caroline Austin-Mattison

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

Abstract

Patients have been surviving cancer diagnoses at a steady increasing rate over the past few decades. In spite of the encouraging decline in cancer morbidity, the cardiovascular effect of some chemotherapy medications is concerning. Moreover, even though there is extensive knowledge in regards to the pathophysiology and increased risk of cardiotoxicity, there is a lack of specific guidelines and adequate cardio-oncology programs focused on reducing cardiovascular risks or disease in patients undergoing cancer treatment. The high incidence of both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer warrants the collaboration of oncology and cardiology providers to screen, treat promptly, and thereby provide …

Building A Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship, Elizabeth Marie Dubois Jan 2016

Building A Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship, Elizabeth Marie Dubois

Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses

The primary care workforce is at a critical juncture where fewer physicians are choosing primary care careers and more patients are availing themselves of outpatient care, through increased insurance coverage among other forces. With the increasing number of graduating nurse practitioners, now is a crucial time to validate an educational model to ensure these clinicians are providing quality care in the primary care setting. This paper explores the current educational model of nurse practitioners and the increasing complexity of care of medically underserved patients. This project illustrated a need for post-graduate training in this setting for nurse practitioners and validated …

Fibronectin Deposition Participates In Extracellular Matrix Assembly And Vascular Morphogenesis, Abigail Hielscher, Kim Ellis, Connie Qiu, Josh Porterfield, Sharon Gerecht Jan 2016

Fibronectin Deposition Participates In Extracellular Matrix Assembly And Vascular Morphogenesis, Abigail Hielscher, Kim Ellis, Connie Qiu, Josh Porterfield, Sharon Gerecht

PCOM Scholarly Works

The extracellular matrix (ECM) has been demonstrated to facilitate angiogenesis. In particular, fibronectin has been documented to activate endothelial cells, resulting in their transition from a quiescent state to an active state in which the cells exhibit enhanced migration and proliferation. The goal of this study is to examine the role of polymerized fibronectin during vascular tubulogenesis using a 3 dimensional (3D) cell-derived de-cellularized matrix. A fibronectin-rich 3D de-cellularized ECM was used as a scaffold to study vascular morphogenesis of endothelial cells (ECs). Confocal analyses of several matrix proteins reveal high intra- and extra-cellular deposition of fibronectin in formed vascular …

No Refuge: Hungarian Romani Refugee Claimants In Canada, Sean Rehaag, Julianna Beaudoin, Jennifer Danch Jan 2016

No Refuge: Hungarian Romani Refugee Claimants In Canada, Sean Rehaag, Julianna Beaudoin, Jennifer Danch

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

From 2008 to 2012, thousands of Hungarian Roma sought asylum in Canada. Some political actors suggested that their claims were unfounded and demonstrated that Canada’s refugee processes were vulnerable to abuse. In contrast, advocates for refugees argued that persecution against Roma was rampant in Hungary and noted that hundreds of Hungarian Roma were granted refugee status in Canada. Much of this debate has occurred in an evidentiary vacuum. This article fills this vacuum through a qualitative and quantitative study of Hungarian Romani refugee claims. First, the context of the study is discussed. Then, the article explores the experiences of Hungarian …

When Enough Is Enough: The Impact Of Parental Involvement In Children's Participation In Organized Sports, Dorothy K. Hollins Jan 2016

When Enough Is Enough: The Impact Of Parental Involvement In Children's Participation In Organized Sports, Dorothy K. Hollins

University Honors Theses

In the United States, organized sports for children and youth play a key role in our country’s culture. Child participation in organized youth sports begins as young as the age of 5 and continues on to 18 years of age. Youth participation in athletics is premised upon the socially accepted notion that participation in competitive sports builds character, which in turn helps children learn valuable life lessons. However, recent studies have shown that youth athletics provides an environment for adults to become overly emotionally invested in their children’s athletic endeavors. This thesis examines varying levels of parental involvement in their …

Developing Distance Education Content Using The Tappa Process, Robert L. Moore

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The proliferation of distance education has occurred alongside the emerging technologies of the Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 environments, changing the way instructors approach, design, and deliver their instructional materials. In the past, instructional design (ID) practitioners relied on instruction system design (ISD) models that focused primarily on macroinstruction. It is now important for these practitioners to use microinstruction strategies to keep pace with the technology evolution. This case study describes the TAPPA (Target, Accomplishment, Past, Prototype, Artifact) Process which was created using the Generic Model for Design Research (GMDR) proposed by McKenney and Reeves (2012) and uses selected ID …

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

Librarians at Old Dominion University (ODU) Libraries use the LibGuides platform in a creative way to meet immediate, practical needs. Traditionally, we have offered two types of information literacy tutorials. The first is a lengthy, module-based tutorial and is used in our information literacy-designated courses to cover skills in-depth and which students must complete over the course of a semester. The second is a short tutorial designed to give students an introduction or a refresher covering basic research skills, information literacy concepts, and library services.

Prior to migrating to a new web platform, ODU Libraries hosted short click-through tutorials on …

Bordering The Constitution, Constituting The Border, Efrat Arbel Jan 2016

Bordering The Constitution, Constituting The Border, Efrat Arbel

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

It is an established principle in Canadian law that refugees present at or within Canada’s borders are entitled to basic constitutional protection. Where precisely these borders lie, however, is far from clear. In this article, I examine the Canadian border as a site at which to study the constitutional entitlements of refugees. Through an analysis of the Multiple Borders Strategy (MBS)--a broad strategy that re-charts Canada’s borders for the purposes of enhanced migration regulation--I point to a basic tension at play in the border as site. I argue that the MBS imagines and enacts the border in two fundamentally different …

Ps V Ontario: Rethinking The Role Of The Charter In Civil Commitment, Isabel Grant, Peter J. Carver Jan 2016

Ps V Ontario: Rethinking The Role Of The Charter In Civil Commitment, Isabel Grant, Peter J. Carver

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In PS v Ontario, the Ontario Court of Appeal held that section 7 of the Charter requires that persons who are civilly committed for six months or more must have access to meaningful review over the conditions of their detention. In this paper, the authors argue that the decision has broad implications for provincial civil commitment regimes across the country. In particular, the Court’s analogy to the Criminal Code Review Board jurisprudence opens the door to a fuller recognition of the profound deprivation of liberty involved in civil commitments. An expanded role for civil review tribunals may be required, including …

Reconsidering Copyright’S Constitutionality, Graham J. Reynolds Jan 2016

Reconsidering Copyright’S Constitutionality, Graham J. Reynolds

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In 1996, in Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin – Michelin & Cie v National Automobile, Aerospace, Transportation and General Workers Union of Canada (CAW-Canada) [Michelin], Justice Teitelbaum of the Federal Court (Trial Division) held both that specific provisions of the Copyright Act did not infringe the right to freedom of expression as protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and that, even if they did, these provisions could be justified under s 1 of the Charter. Since Michelin, these conclusions have been treated by Canadian courts as settled. The purpose of this paper is to challenge these conclusions …

Book Note: Law, Psychology, And Morality: The Role Of Loss Aversion, By Eyal Zamir, Dan Adler Jan 2016

Book Note: Law, Psychology, And Morality: The Role Of Loss Aversion, By Eyal Zamir, Dan Adler

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

RATIONAL CHOICE THEORY, as a descriptive theory of human behaviour, claims that individuals seek to maximize their expected well-being.2 But cognitive psychologists have shown this to be false through experimental and empirical research.3 Instead, human behaviour is predictably subject to cognitive biases, resulting in judgments and decisions considered “irrational” by rational choice theorists. One such bias is loss aversion, whereby people prefer not losing some good over gaining a good of equal value.4 In Law, Psychology, and Morality: The Role of Loss Aversion, Eyal Zamir argues that loss aversion provides a partial explanation for many features of human behaviour within …

Drinking water contamination with poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) poses risks to the developmental, immune, metabolic, and endocrine health of consumers. We present a spatial analysis of 2013–2015 national drinking water PFAS concentrations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (US EPA) third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3) program. The number of industrial sites that manufacture or use these compounds, the number of military fire training areas, and the number of wastewater treatment plants are all significant predictors of PFAS detection frequencies and concentrations in public water supplies. Among samples with detectable PFAS levels, each additional military site within a watershed’s …

Caring In Transition: Home Care Workers’ Experiences Of Care Relationships In Shanghai, China, Liu Hong Jan 2016

Caring In Transition: Home Care Workers’ Experiences Of Care Relationships In Shanghai, China, Liu Hong

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation reports a qualitative study of 23 care workers in the home care program for older people in Shanghai, China. Using grounded theory methodology, a model was developed to account for care workers’ experiences of relationships with older clients. Care workers were found to resist the image of care work as demeaning labour performed by lowly migrant workers and re-construct care as valuable work for those in need accomplished by a caring self. As a mechanism of care relationship formation, care workers engage in tuning, a dynamic process of identity negotiation that shifts in between two contrasting states: …

The Influence Of Abiotic Factors On The Uptake And Elimination Of 3-Trifluoromethyl-4-Nitrophenol By Larval Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus), Benjamin Livingston Hlina Jan 2016

The Influence Of Abiotic Factors On The Uptake And Elimination Of 3-Trifluoromethyl-4-Nitrophenol By Larval Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus), Benjamin Livingston Hlina

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The backbone of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) control in the Great Lakes is the use of the piscicide, 3-trifluoromethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM), which is applied to streams containing larval sea lampreys. However, TFM effectiveness can be influenced by abiotic factors such as pH and temperature, which fluctuate daily and seasonally. The objectives of this thesis were to evaluate the influence of pH, temperature, and season on the toxicity, uptake, and elimination of TFM by larval sea lamprey. Radio-labeled TFM (14C-TFM) was used to determine how TFM uptake rates varied at different water pHs or temperatures during exposure to …

Evaluation Of An Abuse Prevention Education Program For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Karen E. Klee Jan 2016

Evaluation Of An Abuse Prevention Education Program For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Karen E. Klee

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Abstract

An evaluation of an abuse protection education program was conducted for adults with developmental disabilities who receive supports and services from two Community Living Ontario agencies. Abuse education is mandated within the province of Ontario but few empirically evaluated curricula exist to help organizations provide effective education for this vulnerable population. A sample of 61 adults with varying degrees of cognitive ability were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control; information-only educational lessons; and an expanded program providing additional lessons on decision-making and behavioural skills thought necessary to prevent, recognize and report abuse. This program has been developed …
