Evaluating Cultural Competency: A Theory-Driven Integrative Process/Outcome Evaluation Of An Associate Degree Program, Nancy E. Peer

Dissertations

Accreditation organizations have identified specific program outcomes that each nursing program must meet to maintain accreditation, including standards on cultural competence. However, research has shown there is no consistent method of teaching cultural competence or incorporating it into nursing curriculum, so nursing programs are at risk for misinterpretations or not meeting required program outcomes.

Disparities In First-To-Second Dose Measles-Containing Vaccination Coverage: A Comparative Analysis Of The Predictive Power Of Three Economic Indices, Justin Tyler Mcdaniel, Aaron J. Diehr, Dominique Rose

Publications

While overall mortality from measles has decreased, it is still associated with significant global infant deaths. Studies indicate that a second dose of measles-containing vaccine (MCV) is necessary to produce sufficient immunity to measles, yet several developing countries are deficient of a two-dose schedule. This study examined the efficacy of three economic indices—the Human Development Index (HDI), the Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI), and the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)—in predicting first-to-second MCV dosage disparities. Country-level data for MCV coverage were downloaded from the World Health Organization (WHO). Briggsian logarithmic regression models of MCV dosage disparities were calculated to compare the …

Chronic Binge Alcohol Administration Dysregulates Hippocampal Genes Involved In Immunity And Neurogenesis In Simian Immunodeficiency Virus-Infected Macaques, John K Maxi, Matt Dean, Jovanny Zabaleta, Krzysztof Reiss, Gregory J. Bagby, Steve Nelson, Peter J. Winsauer, Francesca Peruzzi, Patricia E. Molina

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

Alcohol use disorders (AUD) exacerbate neurocognitive dysfunction in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV+) patients. We have shown that chronic binge alcohol (CBA) administration (13-14 g EtOH/kg/wk) prior to and during simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection in rhesus macaques unmasks learning deficits in operant learning and memory tasks. The underlying mechanisms of neurocognitive alterations due to alcohol and SIV are not known. This exploratory study examined the CBA-induced differential expression of hippocampal genes in SIV-infected (CBA/SIV+; = 2) macaques in contrast to those of sucrose administered, SIV-infected (SUC/SIV+; = 2) macaques. Transcriptomes of hippocampal samples dissected from brains obtained at necropsy (16 …

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Functional Material Properties Performed On Additively Manufactured Coupons, Devin S. Plagge Nov 2016

Non-Destructive Evaluation Of Functional Material Properties Performed On Additively Manufactured Coupons, Devin S. Plagge

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

This thesis presents the development of non-destructive characterization of functional material properties of additively manufactured metals. In particular, this study was focused on the common structural stainless steel alloy, 316L, utilizing a coupon designed specifically for simple modal analysis. Additive manufacturing (AM) has moved to the forefront of the manufacturing world, particularly in aerospace and defense segments because of the potential to produce multi-functional, highly optimized components. The ability to confidently qualify these complex, and thus expensive, components has been lagging behind the advancing technology. The adoption of traditional characterization techniques developed for wrought materials has been most common, and …

Reproducibility And Reliability Of Chromatin Immunoprecipitation In Clinical Research, Kelli Mcdonough Nov 2016

Reproducibility And Reliability Of Chromatin Immunoprecipitation In Clinical Research, Kelli Mcdonough

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Association between histones and DNA is crucial for many cellular functions such as gene transcription and epigenetic silencing. Changes to chromatin structure influence gene expression via histone modifications. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) is an experimental technique used to investigate the interactions between histones and DNA. ChIP determines the specific location in the genome that histone modifications are associated with, indicating the target of the histone modifiers. Despite the appeal of ChIP as an in vitro technique, there are limitations to its use. There is variability from one preparation to the next, given the many steps and reagents used throughout the technique. …

Western North American Naturalist

Within the last century, the floristic composition of riparian communities in the Southwest has drastically changed following introduction of the exotic tree Tamarix ramosissima. In an attempt to control Tamarix populations, the tamarisk leaf beetle (Diorhabda carinulata) has been utilized as a biological control agent. Three years of data collection at our study sites along Fountain Creek (Fountain, CO) allowed us to characterize the response of Tamarix to invasion by the biological control agent. In analyzing data collected before, during, and after the beetle invasion, we observed a significant effect of foliar herbivory on Tamarix physiology and life …

Visualization Of Comparative Anatomy: Jaw Muscles Of Theropod Dinosaurs And Their Extant Relatives; Illustrating The Story Of Functional Morphology And Evolution, Maxwell Yeager Nov 2016

Visualization Of Comparative Anatomy: Jaw Muscles Of Theropod Dinosaurs And Their Extant Relatives; Illustrating The Story Of Functional Morphology And Evolution, Maxwell Yeager

Theses

Dinosaur anatomy is a largely unexplored subject in medical and scientific illustration. While paleo-artists produce fantastic artwork of colorful beasts in conceptualized habitats and inspire the design of fictional creatures and movie monsters, accurate research and referential materials are often limited to flat, diagrammatic and simple drawings. Using critical research, and physical evidence, more accurately rendered diagrammatic illustrations of dinosaur reconstructions are possible through the lens of modern medical and scientific illustration techniques for educational purposes. Specifically, I identify the evolutionary relationships of theropod dinosaurs with their extant relatives (bird and crocodilians), study the skulls of a series of theropod …
