Seat Belt Safety, Houston J. Hartz Nov 2016

Seat Belt Safety, Houston J. Hartz

Scholars Week

The issue that I decided to discuss is seat belt safety. According to the CDC, 21,022 vehicle passengers died in motor vehicle crashes in 2014 with more than half of these resulting from the individual not being restrained in the vehicle. A car crash isn’t planned, it can happen at any time to anyone. The only way to prepare for something like that to happen is to always take the right precautions which includes putting on your seatbelt every time you get in the vehicle. Over 2.3 million drivers and passengers were treated in emergency departments in 2014. Young adult …

Model Tree Canopy Cover Management Regulation, Kirby Date Nov 2016

Model Tree Canopy Cover Management Regulation, Kirby Date

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This version of a model regulation for Tree Canopy Cover Management has been developed for the purposes of discussion with community leaders, arborists, technical experts, and the development community in Ohio. It has not yet received full legal review and/or endorsement or adoption by any entity.

This model represents a strong departure from traditional tree protection regulations. It does not require protection of any class of trees. Instead it focuses on the stormwater, health and safety benefits of trees in communities over the long term. Quality of the tree living environment is prioritized over tree size and retention. Specific decisions …

The Acute Effects Of Weighted Vest Running On Substrate Utilization And Energy Expenditure, Troy M. Purdom Mr. Nov 2016

The Acute Effects Of Weighted Vest Running On Substrate Utilization And Energy Expenditure, Troy M. Purdom Mr.

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

This study evaluated the effect of weighted vest running (WVR) on fatty acid oxidation (FAox) and caloric expenditure at pre-designated exercise intensities (60,65,70,75,80% VO2max). Seventeen recreationally trained runners (9 men and 8 women) performed four separate graded exercise tests (GXT) separated by 24 hours each. The first graded exercise test (GXT) was performed to establish the workloads at specific exercise intensities. The following three GXTs tested WVR with a control (no vest), 5% body mass (BM) vest, and 10%BM vest, using 3-minute incrementally increasing steady rate stages. Indirect calorimetry was used to measure both FAox (g/min) and caloric …

The Interplay Of Tlr9, Myeloid Cells, And A20 In Periodontal Inflammation, Katie E. Crump, Jennifer C. Oakley, Xia Xia-Juan, Theandra C. Madu, Swathi Devaki, Erin C. Mooney, Sinem E. Sahingur

Biology Faculty Articles

TLR9 deficient (TLR9-/-) mice are resistant to periodontitis, a disease characterized by a dysbiotic microbiota and deregulated immune response resulting in tooth loss and various systemic conditions. However, the mechanisms and biological pathways by which TLR9 instigates periodontal inflammation are yet to be identified. In a ligature-induced model of periodontitis, we demonstrate TLR9-/- mice exhibited significantly less alveolar bone loss compared to their wild-type (WT) counterparts. Consistent with the disease phenotype, gingival tissues showed significantly more inflammatory cell infiltrate in the WT ligated but not in the TLR9-/- ligated mice compared to their unligated controls. Peritoneal …

The Role Of Fatty Acids And Cigarette Smoke Toxicants In Cigarette Smoke-Induced Cardiovascular Disease, Elani Fourie Wiest Nov 2016

The Role Of Fatty Acids And Cigarette Smoke Toxicants In Cigarette Smoke-Induced Cardiovascular Disease, Elani Fourie Wiest

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Young, healthy smokers have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), but early identification of these individuals can prevent progression to more severe cardiovascular diseases like atherosclerosis, stroke, and heart attacks. However, methods developed to detect cardiovascular disease in its early stages are limited and very costly. The goal of this project is to identify biomarkers that can be tested in a single blood draw from smokers in order to both assess their risk of developing cardiovascular disease and identify possible therapeutic targets to prevent disease progression.

The long term goals of this project are to investigate the association …

Investigation Of Whether Determining A Patients Personality Results In Better Patient Communication And Oral Health, Cynthia E. Chavez Nov 2016

Investigation Of Whether Determining A Patients Personality Results In Better Patient Communication And Oral Health, Cynthia E. Chavez

Dental Hygiene ETDs

One of the dental psychosomatic territories is the link between personality traits and oral health treatment. This present study aims at investigating whether determination of patient personality types leads to enhanced communication between dental hygienists and patients resulting in improved oral health. Some hypothesize that determining patient personality traits results in enhanced communication between the patient and the dental hygienist. Similarly, it is hypothesized that determination of a patient’s personality trait can result in better oral health.

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Understanding the processes that determine above-ground biomass (AGB) in Amazonian forests is important for predicting the sensitivity of these ecosystems to environmental change and for designing and evaluating dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs). AGB is determined by inputs from woody productivity [woody net primary productivity (NPP)] and the rate at which carbon is lost through tree mortality. Here, we test whether two direct metrics of tree mortality (the absolute rate of woody biomass loss and the rate of stem mortality) and/or woody NPP, control variation in AGB among 167 plots in intact forest across Amazonia. We then compare these relationships …

Enhancing Developing Relationships With Skin-To-Skin Contact, Dorothy J. Vittner Nov 2016

Enhancing Developing Relationships With Skin-To-Skin Contact, Dorothy J. Vittner

Doctoral Dissertations

Over 15 million premature infants are born annually around the world. It has been optimistically yet incorrectly proposed that healthy preterm infants without major complications eventually catch-up developmentally to full-term infants. Maternal touch, especially during skin to-skin contact (SSC) has the potential to reduce adverse consequences of prematurity. The aim of this dissertation is to increase understanding of mechanisms that link parent infant contact to bio-behavioral responses for parents and their healthy preterm infants. This study is an important step in exploring oxytocin as a potential moderator to improve infant developmental outcomes and the effects of SSC on the mother, …

The Efficacy And Feasibility Of A Context-Specific Autism Behavior Rating Tool With Real Time Data Collection Methods From The Perspectives Of Clinicians, Educators, And Parents, Kathleen Marie Panaccione Nov 2016

The Efficacy And Feasibility Of A Context-Specific Autism Behavior Rating Tool With Real Time Data Collection Methods From The Perspectives Of Clinicians, Educators, And Parents, Kathleen Marie Panaccione

Dissertations and Theses

The incidence of autism has increased tremendously over the past 20 years; however, the tools used for diagnosis and educational identification have largely remained the same. Diagnostic and educational decisions are based on observations and interactions to identify hallmark skill deficits associated with autism. Research demonstrates behaviors are affected by the environment, and real-time data collection is more accurate than reflective methods.

The problem is current autism diagnostic and educational identification tools lack essential features. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), considered the gold standard, relies on contrived settings, and lacks an observational comparison to same aged peers. Autism behavior …

The Amulet Wearable Platform: Demo Abstract, Josiah Hester, Travis Peters, Tianlong Yun, Ronald Peterson, Joseph Skinner, Bhargav Golla, Kevin Storer, Steven Hearndon, Sarah Lord, Ryan Halter, David Kotz, Jacob Sorber

Dartmouth Scholarship

In this demonstration we present the Amulet Platform; a hardware and software platform for developing energy- and resource-efficient applications on multi-application wearable devices. This platform, which includes the Amulet Firmware Toolchain, the Amulet Runtime, the ARP-View graphical tool, and open reference hardware, efficiently protects applications from each other without MMU support, allows developers to interactively explore how their implementation decisions impact battery life without the need for hardware modeling and additional software development, and represents a new approach to developing long-lived wearable applications. We envision the Amulet Platform enabling long-duration experiments on human subjects in a wide variety of studies.

Buddhism And Women-The Dhamma Has No Gender, Chand R. Sirimanne Nov 2016

Buddhism And Women-The Dhamma Has No Gender, Chand R. Sirimanne

Journal of International Women's Studies

The increasing influence and relevance of Buddhism in a global society have given rise to a vibrant and evolving movement, particularly in the West, loosely called Socially Engaged Buddhism. Today many look to Buddhism for an answer to one of the most crucial issues of all time—eradicating discrimination against women. There is general agreement that Buddhism does not have a reformist agenda or an explicit feminist theory. This paper explores this issue from a Theravāda Buddhist perspective using the scriptures as well as recent work by Western scholars conceding that there are deep seated patriarchal and even misogynistic elements reflected …
