The Technology Bias: What Google Teaches Us About Child Rights, Yvonne Vissing Ph.D, Sarah Burris M.A., Quixada Moore-Vissing Ph.D

Societies Without Borders

Technology both helps and hinders what we know about human rights. Use of Google is of central importance to both the Sociology of Knowledge and the creation of internet literacy. In this study, different search engines are compared regarding content of “child rights” in the fifty United States. Findings include: importance of algorithmic loading of sites; number of hits may not reflect the importance or accuracy of a topic; different search engines produce different findings; and personalized searches result in different results. Personalization of searches in accordance to one’s previous search history may result in people being given information that …

Settler Social Order: The Violence Of Policing In New Mexico, Elisabeth Rose Ehlert Perkal Nov 2016

Settler Social Order: The Violence Of Policing In New Mexico, Elisabeth Rose Ehlert Perkal

American Studies ETDs

This thesis argues that in order to understand how and why police violence happens in the U.S., it is necessary to situate these interactions within a framework of settler colonialism. The police exist to maintain social order and, in the case of the U.S., this social order is defined by hegemonic structures of power including settler colonialism. Thus, the police fabricate and enforce settler social order that requires subjugating and eliminating Native people in order to preserve settler sovereignty. This thesis intervenes into monolithic critiques of policing in the U.S. and argues that critiques of police violence are most productive …

Montane Valley Grassland Plant Communities Are Highly Resistant To Wildfire, Martina M. Suazo

Biology ETDs

Understanding the ecological role of fire in fire-adapted plant communities is of great importance for restoration and preservation; however, limited research has been conducted on the response of upper elevation, C3 grassland plant communities to wildfire. This study investigates the effects of the Las Conchas wildfire of 2011 on plant community structure and function in the montane valley grasslands of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, USA. Long term monitoring of nine burned and seven unburned grassland sites was used to measure vegetation composition and dynamics both spatially and temporally relative to fire. Results show that …

Assets And Barriers To Osteoarthritis, Allison K. Wiles Nov 2016

Assets And Barriers To Osteoarthritis, Allison K. Wiles

Scholars Week

Osteoarthritis has remained a prevailing health concern in our society for many years. OA is most commonly seen in middle aged men and women suffering from pain and stiffness in the hip, knee, and thumb areas. Risk factors for OA include age, obesity, previous joint injuries, overuse of joint areas, and weak muscles. If not treated, OA could lead to permanent discomfort and pain, and potentially develop into depression, lowered quality of life, or a need for long-term home health care.

By providing photo footage of every day health care issues, Photo voice persuades community members to change habits and …

Obesity Due To Poor Snack Choices And Lack Of Physical Activity, Kaleb S. Adams Nov 2016

Obesity Due To Poor Snack Choices And Lack Of Physical Activity, Kaleb S. Adams

Scholars Week

Obesity Due to Poor Snack Choices and Lack of Physical Activity

A chronic issue in my immediate community, Murray State University, is obesity due to unhealthy diets and a generally lethargic lifestyle. The muffin picture represents the average healthiness of snacks available on campus. While students are working towards their education on campus it has become increasingly difficult to acquire snacks that are both convenient and health conscious. Places such as the T-Room cater towards less healthy foods by making them far more available and also making them much less expensive. For a student to get a quick lunch consisting …

Fast Way To Health, Angelika Ford Nov 2016

Fast Way To Health, Angelika Ford

Scholars Week

A health issue that I am passionate about and wish to raise awareness about to make a difference in Murray is increase obesity due to food choices and low gym attendance. I would like to change the way people eat fast food. My first picture is a picture of the outside drive through at McDonald’s during lunch hour. I believe this is a barrier because there are many cars at the drive through order lanes. People are eating on the go; thus they are not spending time sitting down to enjoy the food they are consuming. This situation happens because …

Helmets Vs. No Helmets, Marcy Marie Turner Ms. Nov 2016

Helmets Vs. No Helmets, Marcy Marie Turner Ms.

Scholars Week

Motorcycle helmet safety. Here in KY there is no helmet law in place at this time. It is completely up to each individual to decide if they choose to wear a helmet or not. Yes the helmets look simple and like they don't look like they could do much for your protection or make much of a difference, but according to the CDC helmets saved over 1,630 lives and over $2.8 billion in economic costs in 2013. Helmets reduce risk of death by 37% and risk of head injury by 69% also mentioned by the CDC.

So by wearing a …

Current And Emerging Uses Of Statins In Clinical Therapeutics: A Review, Jonathan T. Davies, Spencer F. Delfino, Chad E. Feinberg, Meghan F. Johnson, Veronica L. Nappi, Joshua T. Olinger, Anthony P. Schwab, Hollie I. Swanson Nov 2016

Current And Emerging Uses Of Statins In Clinical Therapeutics: A Review, Jonathan T. Davies, Spencer F. Delfino, Chad E. Feinberg, Meghan F. Johnson, Veronica L. Nappi, Joshua T. Olinger, Anthony P. Schwab, Hollie I. Swanson

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Statins, a class of cholesterol-lowering medications that inhibit 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, are commonly administered to treat atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Statin use may expand considerably given its potential for treating an array of cholesterol-independent diseases. However, the lack of conclusive evidence supporting these emerging therapeutic uses of statins brings to the fore a number of unanswered questions including uncertainties regarding patient-to-patient variability in response to statins, the most appropriate statin to be used for the desired effect, and the efficacy of statins in treating cholesterol-independent diseases. In this review, the adverse effects, costs, and drug–drug and drug–food interactions associated with statin …

The social identity construction of international students studying in the United States is important to the field of second language learning and the study of identity. A Social Identity and Communities of Practice (CoP) framework were used to understand how participation in a CoP informed the identity of non-native speaking university international students studying in the U.S. The focus of this study was to investigate how participation in a CoP informed the identity of non-native speaking international university students studying in the U.S. I proposed that these frameworks provided a foundation for understanding how participation in a CoP for non-native …

Discourse, Power, And The Language Of Racism: The Establishment Of The Racial Contract In New Mexico, Jesse A. Romero Nov 2016

Discourse, Power, And The Language Of Racism: The Establishment Of The Racial Contract In New Mexico, Jesse A. Romero

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

Abstract

Words are not neutral. Language, and the meaning and legal implications attached to it, are politically and ideologically driven. The manipulation of discourse are hallmarks of white supremacy. In a historical context, language has been used to frame the colonial legal discourse establishing white supremacy and racially defining the white polity who established it. This unearned power to establish legal discourse and a common narrative for whites as the superior racial group and people of color as inferior racial groups is pervasive in society. The trajectory this placed on people racially, politically, socio-economically, and educationally can still be seen …

Photovoice Of Obesity On Murray State University's Campus, Karley Wray, Melissa Godby

Scholars Week

The issue we decided to discuss on campus using Photovoice was obesity. Obesity is becoming a very big topic that we all need to start focusing on. Obesity is defined as having a BMI at or above 30. This is becoming more common with our cultural change. We are becoming more fast food eaters and are not exercising as much as we should. It is even getting worse on college campuses. We all knew of what was called the freshmen 15, but now it is becoming a four year 15. It is becoming more common for college students to become …

Substance Abuse, Javarius Hodge Nov 2016

Substance Abuse, Javarius Hodge

Scholars Week

- One of the biggest issues in the Murray community is substance and drug abuse. In our community we have a lot of college students and older people in the community that are disabled or retired. College students in our community strive very hard to graduate or to even complete a simple assignment. For some students, adderol and vyvanse is the trigger to get them to be motivated enough to do their work or to just complete college because it helps them focus on and complete their work. They also sometimes take Xanax to help them sleep through the night …

The Importance Of Hand Washing On Regional Campus, Katelynn R. Dowdy Nov 2016

The Importance Of Hand Washing On Regional Campus, Katelynn R. Dowdy

Scholars Week

Hand washing is when you wet your hands under warm water, add soap and rub hands together for 20 seconds or longer, rinse, dry with paper towel, and finally turn off running water with that paper towel you just dried your hands off with. Hand washing is something that helps prevent the spread of germs that lead to illness. This is a health problem that could anywhere and everywhere in the community, but I specifically looked into the Paducah-Murray regional campus.

Photovoice is a process where members of a community take pictures that give some insight on what they believe …
