Jesus And The World Of Grace, 1968-2016: An Idiosyncratic Theological Memoir, William L. Portier
Jesus And The World Of Grace, 1968-2016: An Idiosyncratic Theological Memoir, William L. Portier
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This article offers an impressionistic look back over the past five decades, from 1968 to 2016, in Catholic theology in the United States. At the heart of this story are Christology, the world of grace, and their relationship. This memoir unfolds in three parts: “Running on Empty, 1968–1980”; “Jesus and the World of Grace, 1980–2016”; “Can Liberal Catholics Come Back?” It identifies the most neuralgic question left to us from this period: How is Christ related to the world of grace?

The Relationship Of The Attributional Dimensions Of Emotional Differentiation On Attributional Dimensions Of Technology Readiness For Orthotic And Prosthetic Clinicians, Gerald E. Stark
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Some individuals and groups seem to adopt emerging ideas and innovations more readily than others. Since any emerging innovation or technology inherently comes with a higher degree of uncertainty and risk, the group or individual must deal with the anxiety created by innovative behavior. Individuals who are less anxious and risk averse may tend to adopt innovations more easily than others. Within any social group, individuals can be classified into adopter categories based on their rate of adoption and capacity for risk and anxiety. Individuals who are more susceptible to anxiety in general, may seek the emotional scaffolding of their …
The Spatial Ecology Of The Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene Carolina Carolina) In A Fragmented Landscape In Southeast Tennessee, Hamilton County, Mark Dillard
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The landscape throughout the range of the Eastern Box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) has been altered significantly since the late 1880s by habitat fragmentation. In this study, the spatial ecology and seasonal movement patterns of the Eastern Box turtle in contrasting habitat types are investigated. Eastern Box turtles had home ranges that averaged (mean = 3.77 ± 2.82 ha, minimum convex polygon) in size among individuals. There was no significant difference between mean annual home range size and movement patterns between males and females; however, home range size for male turtles was larger during the summer versus spring activity season …
An Equivalent Plate Model With Orthotropic Material Properties For Adjacent Box-Beam Bridge Superstructure, Timothy Alexander Schnell
An Equivalent Plate Model With Orthotropic Material Properties For Adjacent Box-Beam Bridge Superstructure, Timothy Alexander Schnell
Masters Theses
Reflective cracking over the longitudinal joints of adjacent box-beam bridges is a welldocumented and recurrent problem; it is a concern because it leads to poor durability performance. These cracks develop during early stages of bridge construction and have not been eliminate by the design revisions implemented so far.
This study is aimed at developing a rational load demand analysis model for calculating the moment acting at the longitudinal joints in order to determine the impact of post-tensioning on mitigating reflective cracking.
The scope of the study includes calculating moment demand at the shear keys using a rational analysis model based …

The Crisis At Fort Sumter: The Symbolic Monument That Transformed Northern And Southern Opinions During The Start Of The Civil War, Olivia C. Cabanban
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Understanding the complexity of the Battle at Fort Sumter and the changing opinions of Northerners and Southerners acts as means of delving into the deeper roots of slavery, secession, and national discourse that laced our nation’s undeniable history. The first firings at Fort Sumter were the flashpoint of the entirety of the Civil War, triggering the four years of battle, death, destruction, and competing nationalisms that ensued between the North and South. Because the histories of the war—more specifically the battle of Fort Sumter—are biased because they are written from points of views laced with Confederate and Unionist undertones, comprehending …
Fear Of Missing Out (Fomo) And Personality: Their Relationship To Collegiate Alcohol Abuse, Kristen D. Webb
Fear Of Missing Out (Fomo) And Personality: Their Relationship To Collegiate Alcohol Abuse, Kristen D. Webb
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This study serves to examine the effects Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and personality have on alcohol-related consequences in collegiate students. To investigate these relationships, a survey was distributed to Butler University students via their daily email listserv, and 101 students’ responses were recorded. Using multiple regression analyses, no relationship was found between an individual’s degree of experienced FoMO and alcohol related consequences; however, neuroticism was found to be strongly correlated with FoMO. Additionally, extroversion inversely predicted more alcohol-related consequences, and Greek affiliation was found to be a significant predictor of one’s consequences as well.
Measuring Community Adaptive And Transformative Capacity In The Arctic Context, Matthew Berman, Gary Kofinas, Shauna Burnsilver
Measuring Community Adaptive And Transformative Capacity In The Arctic Context, Matthew Berman, Gary Kofinas, Shauna Burnsilver
ISER Articles
Adaptive capacity (AC) plays a prominent role in reducing community vulnerability, an essential goal for achieving sustainability. The related concept, transformative capacity (TC), describes a set of tools from the resilience paradigm for making more fundamental system changes. While the literature appears to agree generally on the meaning of AC and TC, operational definitions vary widely in empirical applications. We address measurement of AC and TC in empirical studies of community vulnerability and resilience, with special attention to the problems of arctic communities. We discuss how some challenges follow from ambiguities in the broader vulnerability model within which AC is …

Survey Of Likely Louisiana Voters For 2016 Senate Runoff, Edward Chervenak, Survey Research Center, University Of New Orleans
Survey Research Center Publications
The University of New Orleans’ Survey Research Center (SRC) sponsored an automated interactive voice response (IVR) telephone survey of 776 active registered voters in Louisiana on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. We asked likely voters who they preferred in the 2016 Senate runoff election and whether they thought Obamacare should be repealed. The poll shows that the Republican candidate John Kennedy has a comfortable lead over his Democratic challenger, Foster Campbell. We asked respondents whether they believed Obamacare should be repealed. Likely Louisiana voters back the idea of repealing the healthcare law by a two-to-one margin.

Psychology: Faculty Publications
Previous refugee research has been unable to link pre-displacement trauma with unemployment in the host country. The current study assessed the role of pre-displacement trauma, post-displacement trauma, and the interaction of both trauma types to prospectively examine unemployment in a random sample of newly-arrived Iraqi refugees. Participants (N = 286) were interviewed three times over the first two years post-arrival. Refugees were assessed for pre-displacement trauma exposure, post-displacement trauma exposure, a history of unemployment in the country of origin and host country, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Analyses found that neither pre-displacement nor post-displacement trauma independently …

Fructose Alters Cell Survival And Gene Expression In Microglia And Neuronal Cells Lines, Drew P. Seidel, Susan Denapoli, Thomas S. Maciulewicz, Melinda E. Lull
Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications
Purpose: Microglia are macrophages that are found primarily in the CNS and play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy brain by engulfing invading microorganisms, releasing inflammatory mediators, and pruning dead cells. Microglia can become activated in response to certain stimuli which causes them to transition into a pro-inflammatory state, and can sometimes become chronically activated which can result in neuronal damage. Studies have shown a causal relationship between this activation and sugars such as fructose and glucose. We sought to understand the role of sugars in microglial activation and the subsequent effects on neuron health.
Methods: Rat microglia (HAPI) …

The Humoral Theory Of Transplantation: Epitope Analysis And The Pathogenicity Of Hla Antibodies., Edward J Filippone, John Farber
The Humoral Theory Of Transplantation: Epitope Analysis And The Pathogenicity Of Hla Antibodies., Edward J Filippone, John Farber
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Central to the humoral theory of transplantation is production of antibodies by the recipient against mismatched HLA antigens in the donor organ. Not all mismatches result in antibody production, however, and not all antibodies are pathogenic. Serologic HLA matching has been the standard for solid organ allocation algorithms in current use. Antibodies do not recognize whole HLA molecules but rather polymorphic residues on the surface, called epitopes, which may be shared by multiple serologic HLA antigens. Data are accumulating that epitope analysis may be a better way to determine organ compatibility as well as the potential immunogenicity of given HLA …

Moving Forward By Looking Back: The Retroactive Application Of Obergefell, Lee-Ford Tritt
UF Law Faculty Publications
The recent Supreme Court decision of Obergefell v. Hodges has forever altered American jurisprudence. Not only did this decision make same-sex marriage legal in all fifty states, but it also required states to recognize same-sex marriages from other states in accordance with the 14th Amendment. The Court’s holding in Obergefell raises a fundamental question with serious legal and financial significance: when exactly do these once unrecognized marriages legally begin? And to what extent must courts apply Obergefell retroactively? The stakes are high and substantive financial effects are pending on the answer to this question — for, with marriage, comes wide-ranging …
Other Markets, Other Costs: Modernizing Antitrust, Jeffrey L. Harrison
Other Markets, Other Costs: Modernizing Antitrust, Jeffrey L. Harrison
UF Law Faculty Publications
Today’s antitrust law is characterized by stagnation and indeterminacy. The failure is so thorough that it is not clear that U.S. competition law actually leads to any outcomes that are defendable except at the most superficial level. Moreover, when enforcement does result in a desirable outcome, it not clear that it is the best outcome. The principal reason for this state of affairs is that antitrust scholars and courts cling to misguided goals and theories that have not evolved despite an avalanche of information now available that can modernize the discipline.

Design And Evaluation Of Pediatric Gait Rehabilitation Robots, Cale J. Stolle
Design And Evaluation Of Pediatric Gait Rehabilitation Robots, Cale J. Stolle
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Gait therapy methodologies were studied and analyzed for their potential for pediatric patients. Using data from heel, metatarsal, and toe trajectories, a nominal gait trajectory was determined using Fourier transforms for each foot point. These average trajectories were used as a basis of evaluating each gait therapy mechanism. An existing gait therapy device (called ICARE) previously designed by researchers, including engineers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was redesigned to accommodate pediatric patients. Unlike many existing designs, the pediatric ICARE did not over- or under-constrain the patient’s leg, allowing for repeated, comfortable, easily-adjusted gait motions. This design was assessed under clinical …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
HIV disproportionately affects Black men who have sex with men (MSM), yet there are few evidence-based programs that respond to the diverse realities of Black MSM communities. This article examines the development of Real Talk, a new harm reduction-based, sexual health intervention for Black MSM. We first analyze the key themes from our formative research: (1) stigma, discrimination, and intersectionalities in the lives of Black MSM, (2) the importance of safe spaces and community provided by health promotion programs, and (3) moving beyond condoms in sexual health messaging. We then describe our agile design product development process and present an …
The Effect Of Frequency Resolution On Intelligibility Sentence And Its Relevance To Cochlear Implant Design, Seth H. Roy
The Effect Of Frequency Resolution On Intelligibility Sentence And Its Relevance To Cochlear Implant Design, Seth H. Roy
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study is to understand how electrical stimulation (as opposed to acoustical stimulation) of the auditory nerve is used in cochlear implants. Speech is a complex signal that changes rapidly in time and frequency domains. Since phonemes (the smallest unit of speech that distinguishes words) depend on nuanced differences in frequency patterns, it would be expected that a signal with drastically reduced frequency information would be of limited value for conveying speech. Such a frequency-poor signal is the object to be investigated in the present work. It is also the basis of the way speech is represented …
An Evaluation Of The Relationships Between Safety Management System Intiatives, Transformational Safety Leadership, Self-Efficacy, Safety Behavior And Safety Related Events Mediated By Safety Motivation In Collegiate Aviation, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum

The study conceptualized Safety Management System (SMS) initiative, self-efficacy, and transformational safety leadership as constructs that relates to safety behavior (measured by safety compliance and safety participation) when mediated by safety motivation using a concurrent-triangulation approach. The study also evaluated the relationship between safety behavior and safety -related events. Structural equation modeling techniques was used to derive a final measurement model that fit the empirical data and was used to test the study hypotheses. Utilizing a sample of 282 collegiate flight students and instructors from a large public university, a 46-item survey was conducted to measure respondent’s perceptions on the …
Prevalence And Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns Of Salmonella Isolated From Poultry Farms, Carmen G. Velasquez Moreno
Prevalence And Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns Of Salmonella Isolated From Poultry Farms, Carmen G. Velasquez Moreno
Open Access Theses
Antimicrobial agents are used in human medicine to treat infections by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. The same or similar drugs are used in in food-producing animals for therapeutic and sub-therapeutic purposes. Antimicrobial resistant bacteria that develop on farms are a public health risk as these organisms may contribute to treatment failures in infected humans. The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of Salmonella isolated from poultry farms in two different seasons to evaluate the effect of recommended biosecurity practices. Specifically, we identified Salmonella serotypes, measured antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and characterized AMR patterns. We hypothesized that …
Antibacterial Activity Of Essential Oil Encapsulated Sodium Iota-Carrageenan Fibers, Carlos D. Carter
Antibacterial Activity Of Essential Oil Encapsulated Sodium Iota-Carrageenan Fibers, Carlos D. Carter
Open Access Theses
Spoilage microorganisms cause food waste and loss of quality. While the foodborne pathogen outbreaks lead to thousands of hospitalizations and deaths. Essential oils (EOs), plant extracts, possess the required antimicrobial activities and thus their usage stands out as a feasible approach for controlling the undesirable bacterial growth in food systems. However, EOs are highly volatile and lose their activity upon exposure to environmental conditions. In this regard, their encapsulation in Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) matrices such as food grade polysaccharides especially iota-carrageenan could be one of the viable alternatives. Iota-carrageenan, sulfated polysaccharide from marine algae, is being used in …

Mitigating Conflict: A Human Dimensions Analysis Of Mesopredators And Their Management, Zoe Elizabeth Glas
Open Access Theses
Recent research on species that are both uncommon and unfamiliar to the public has shown that wildlife value theory may not be applicable to the management of all species. This stands in contrast to studies on charismatic megafauna like deer, bear and elk, in which wildlife value orientations could be used to predict the acceptability of various management actions. To further evaluate this phenomena, this study presents the findings of a survey of Indiana residents evaluating 1) the applicability of wildlife value theory to mesopredators, which are common and well known, but not charismatic megafauna, and 2) factors that may …

Lower Food Web Dynamics In Lakes Michigan And Huron: Spatial And Temporal Responses To Recent Oligotrophication, Margaret Hutton Stadig
Lower Food Web Dynamics In Lakes Michigan And Huron: Spatial And Temporal Responses To Recent Oligotrophication, Margaret Hutton Stadig
Open Access Theses
Nutrient abatement programs, originally enacted to counter eutrophication have successfully suppressed nutrient loads and relative primary production in marine and freshwater systems. Recently, the additive impacts of invasive filter feeders have further reduced offshore primary production in several aquatic systems throughout the world. It has been hypothesized that the biological activity of these invasive species may sequester nutrients within the nearshore benthic environment, creating steep gradients in primary production between nearshore and offshore habitats. In the Laurentian Great Lakes, past studies of oligotrophication have primarily focused on food web responses in offshore habitats. Organisms at higher trophic levels have been …
