Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser Dec 2016

Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser

Open Access Theses

Given the dynamic nature of soil nitrogen (N), inorganic N fertilization to corn (Zea mays L.) has potential to alter N pool balance by creating an accumulation or depletion of soil N. Current corn N recommendations in the common corn-soybean rotation of Indiana strive to find the best N rate that maximizes producer profit. Increasing our understanding of soil N will inform producers if they should adjust fertilizer rates for corn to influence maintenance of organic N and Carbon. Our objective was to determine residual N effects from fertilized corn in a corn-soybean rotation by measuring (1) soil N …

Navigating Women's Cultural Representation Through Video Games In The Obama Era, Mark Stephen Reeder Dec 2016

Navigating Women's Cultural Representation Through Video Games In The Obama Era, Mark Stephen Reeder

English Theses - Archive

While the representations of women in video games have remained disappointingly negative since the 1980s, America’s political shift from the presidencies of George W. Bush to Barack Obama in 2007 had important cultural implications, particularly impacting the representation of women in popular culture. This thesis will examine the cultural depictions of women from 2002-2011, providing a particular focus on the unique cultural factors prevalent during this time period—including the expansion of pornography, a conservative cultural backlash to Obama, and the rapid deterioration of ‘political correctness’—that impacted how images of women in video games were received. Analyzing the cultural atmosphere of …

More Than Target 6.3: A Systems Approach To Rethinking Sustainable Development Goals In A Resource-Scarce World, Qiong Zhang, Christine Prouty, Julie B. Zimmerman, James Mihelcic

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outlines 17 individual Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that guide the needs of practice for many professional disciplines around the world, including engineering, research, policy, and development. The SDGs represent commitments to reduce poverty, hunger, ill health, gender inequality, environmental degradation, and lack of access to clean water and sanitation. If a typical reductionist approach is employed to address and optimize individual goals, it may lead to a failure in technological, policy, or managerial development interventions through unintended consequences in other goals. This study uses a systems approach to understand the fundamental dynamics between the …

Like A Duck On Water: Chinese Academic Migrants In The U.S. And Their Suburban Weekend Chinese School, Jianping Xu

Dissertations - ALL

Current literature is scarce on the diverse experiences of hundreds of thousands of mainland Chinese who, since 1979, have come to the U.S. primarily for graduate study and mostly settled here afterwards in dispersed university or corporate jobs and suburban residences. After the Immigration Act of 1990, many of them have become visible experts in science and engineering. Yet their struggles as Chinese academic migrants simultaneously privileged by their educational backgrounds and disadvantaged by their outsider status in the U.S. often remain invisible. Possibly due to the myth of “model minority,” mainstream America has seen them as doing-well and well-behaving, …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There is a constant demand for sensitive and effective anti-cancer drug delivery systems, capable of detecting early-stage pathological conditions and increasing patient survival. Recently, chitosan-based drug delivery nanocomplexes have shown to smartly respond to the distinctive features of the tumor microenvironment, a complex network of extracellular molecules, stromal and endothelial cells, which supports the tumor formation and its metastatic invasion. Due to biocompatibility, easy chemical tailorability, and pH-responsiveness, chitosan has emerged as a promising candidate for the formulation of supramolecular multifunctional materials. The present study focuses on the design, fabrication and characterization of fluorescently labelled, hydrophobically modified glycol chitosan nano-micelles …

A Medical Decision Model For Tinnitus Treatment Assessment, Hong Don Ihn Dec 2016

A Medical Decision Model For Tinnitus Treatment Assessment, Hong Don Ihn

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tinnitus means objective somatosounds, and subjective auditory or sensorineural perception of noise without external physical sounds. There are several tinnitus treatments, but it is difficult to ascertain how otorhinolaryngologists rank the alternatives of treatments due to the insufficiency of available evidence and standards. A hierarchical decision model (HDM), a popular multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method, can help to implement a comprehensive assessment of tinnitus treatments and rational decision-making to select the appropriate tinnitus treatments. The HDM considers a holistic approach using multiple dimensions, criteria and expert judgments to acquire the relative ranking of candidate tinnitus treatments. The four dimensions selected …

Audience Participation In Traditional Chinese Theatre, Zifei Wu Dec 2016

Audience Participation In Traditional Chinese Theatre, Zifei Wu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Traditional Chinese theatre is unique. Unlike its distinct stage elements with apparent Eastern features, the special role of audience participation in traditional Chinese theatre is less conspicu-ous and, to some, may seem disordered; however, underneath, the logic of audience participation suggests a theatrical communication and a performer-audience relationship that is completely different from the theatrical traditions of the Western world. There is an explosion of interest in the role of the audience among twentieth and twenty-first century theatre practitioners in the Western world. To these experimental theatre artists, forming a non-traditional performer-audience relationship is often an approach to show their …

Evaluation Of Contrast Agents Used In Computed Tomography, Michael Joseph Bonvento

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Contrast agents have been routinely employed in radiographic applications for more than 80 years and in computed tomography (CT) for more than 50 years. These agents have high atomic number increasing the photoelectric interaction probability thereby reducing photon intensity projected through the contrast containing structure and improving available image contrast. A wide variety of contrast agents have been examined over the years, however, iodine and barium containing agents make up the vast majority of applications. Other agents are or may become available which may find utility due to reduced toxicity, better characteristics for imaging or dose reduction. This is particularly …

Synthetic Approaches To A Bis-Thiol Based Arsenic Receptor And A Potential Pi-Stacking Based Polyamide Foldamer, Dana Michele Castro Dec 2016

Synthetic Approaches To A Bis-Thiol Based Arsenic Receptor And A Potential Pi-Stacking Based Polyamide Foldamer, Dana Michele Castro

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Arsenic is a known harmful chemical, causing cancer and other adverse health effects if consumed in even modest amounts. Arsenic is found in drinking water at levels higher than deemed safe in many parts of the world. Current detection methods for arsenic in water have many limitations. A low-cost, safe, and efficient alternative would make arsenic detection simpler and human lives safer. As arsenic is known to have a high affinity to sulfur, the Drueckhammer group has designed a compound with two protruding thiol groups that may provide the basis for fluorescence-based detection. In this study, preliminary steps in the …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As(III) compounds have high affinity for thiol groups and this affinity has been used in the prior development of FlAsH and related tags for cysteine peptides. We aimed to develop a series of arsenic-based receptors designed to bind to different arrangements of cysteines within native alpha-helical protein structures. Computer modeling was used to define the proper arrangement of arsenic functionality for binding to each targeted sequence. The computer program HostDesigner was then used to discover scaffold structures on which to display the arsenic functionality at the proper distance and relative orientation to bind the targeted sequence. Designed structures were then …

Green Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Metal-Based Nanomaterials, Crystal Lewis Dec 2016

Green Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Metal-Based Nanomaterials, Crystal Lewis

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Metal-based nanomaterials have attracted significant research interest due to their unique size-dependent optical, magnetic, electronic, thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties as compared with their bulk counterparts. These advantageous and tailorable properties render these materials as ideal candidates for catalysis, photovoltaics, and even biomedical applications. However, nanomaterials are typically synthesized via chemical or physical processes, which are continuing to rise in cost, complexity, and toxicity. As a result, ‘milder’ and more environmentally benign nanoscale synthetic methodologies, particularly U-tube double diffusion, molten salt, and hydrothermal techniques, have been utilized to mitigate for these drawbacks. Moreover, these efficient and facile techniques coupled with …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Multidrug resistance is a major obstacle to effective cancer chemotherapy. New-generation taxoids SB-T-1214 and SB-T-1216 have shown two to three orders of magnitude higher potency than those of paclitaxel and docetaxel against multidrug-resistant cancer cell lines. A structure-activity relationship (SAR) study has been conducted in order to test which moiety of the new-generation taxoids account for the high potency against multidrug resistant cancer cell lines. In order to selectively deliver new-generation taxoids into tumor cells, tumor-targeted drug delivery systems with a smart methyl-branched disulfide linker have been developed in the Ojima laboratory. The metabolic stability of this disulfide linker has …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this thesis, I consider the complex interactions between discourses of medicine, nature, and disability which determine what pregnant women can or cannot, or should or should not do to maintain an acceptable and “healthy†pregnancy that results in a desired, nondisabled child. In this thesis, I employ two interdisciplinary methods, critical discourse analysis and qualitative interviewing and ground my project in feminist disability studies and the concept of reproductive justice. I analyze interviews I conducted with five currently pregnant women from Long Island, New York and three pregnancy manuals, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Ina May’s Guide to …
