A Casereport Of Concomitant Injection Of Botulinum Toxin Type A In Detrusor And External Sphincter For Treatment Of Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Yu-Hui Huang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Patients with spinal cord injury above the sacral level usually have spastic type neurogenic bladder dysfunction (NBD). Spastic NBD is usually manifested with detrusor overactivity and detrusor-external sphincter dyssynergia (DESD). Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection has been used in treating spastic NBD for long time. This injection can be performed either on the detrusor (which needs an intermittent catheterization program and a greater decrease in intravesicle pressure) or on the external sphincter (which may cause urinary incontinence and a smaller decrease in intravesicle pressure). Here we present a SCI patient receiving a new injection method involving BoNT-A injection simultaneously …

Are You Wo(Man) Enough To Get Married?, Tiurma M. P. Allagan
Indonesia Law Review
The Indonesian Marriage Law states that marriage is a physical and spiritual relationship between a man and a woman as husband and wife in order to create an eternal happy family based on the Almighty God. This definition reflects that marriages in Indonesia must be between heterosexual couples. However, a question appears as to whether a man or a woman mentioned thereof includes a man and a woman who were hermaphrodite, intersex, or nowadays known as a person with Disorder of Sexual Development (DSD)? The case of AH whereby his marriage was cancelled by the Supreme Court in 2014 for …

Internationalisation via partnerships and collaboration appears to be the way forward in western higher education and is also developing fast in Asian countries. One growing area of collaboration is part-time Transnational Higher Education (TNHE) courses where western ‘flying faculty’ academics from ‘exporter’ universities in, for example, the UK or Australia, ‘fly in’ to the Eastern ‘importer’ country to deliver teaching, and then ‘fly back’ to their country and their role in their university after one or two weeks of intense teaching. Such western higher education institutions collaborate mainly with Asian countries where strong cultural factors continue to affect local society. …

Evolutionary processes greatly impact the outcomes of biological invasions. An extensive body of research suggests that invasive populations often undergo phenotypic and ecological divergence from their native sources. Evolution also operates at different and distinct stages during the invasion process. Thus, it is important to incorporate evolutionary change into frameworks of biological invasions because it allows us to conceptualize how these processes may facilitate or hinder invasion success. Here, we review such processes, with an emphasis on tree invasions, and place them in the context of the unified framework for biological invasions. The processes and mechanisms described are pre-introduction evolutionary …

Stability Of Cross-Feeding Polymorphisms In Microbial Communities, Ivana Gudelj, Margie Kinnersley, Peter Rashkov, Karen Schmidt, Frank Rosenzweig
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Cross-feeding, a relationship wherein one organism consumes metabolites excreted by another, is a ubiquitous feature of natural and clinically-relevant microbial communities and could be a key factor promoting diversity in extreme and/or nutrient-poor environments. However, it remains unclear how readily cross-feeding interactions form, and therefore our ability to predict their emergence is limited. In this paper we developed a mathematical model parameterized using data from the biochemistry and ecology of an E. coli cross-feeding laboratory system. The model accurately captures short-term dynamics of the two competitors that have been observed empirically and we use it to systematically explore the stability …

Interprofessional practice (IPP), collaboration of professionals from different backgrounds working together to provide services, is of growing importance in speech-language pathology and across other disciplines in the vast health field (WHO, 2010). The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) stresses the importance of communicating roles and responsibilities of health professionals to provide the best quality care for patients (Dixon & Oandasan, 2015). In order to understand the roles and responsibilities across disciplines, health care professionals and students need to be provided with the necessary education. Currently, an initiative for interprofessional competency is being constructed to provide more involved education for …

Sustainability And Spread Of Community-Based Initiatives: A Case Study Of Community Cares, A Children’S Hospital’S 16 Year Effort To Serve Its Community, Robert F. Austin, Patricia Coleman, Stephanie Meads, Angelo P. Giardino
Journal of Family Strengths
The sustainability and spread of innovations is often elusive, presenting continuous challenges to clinicians and healthcare leaders. Somewhere between 33 - 70% of all innovations are reportedly not sustained, and even fewer are spread beyond the original team, or to other units within an organization. In plain language, sustainability is defined as locking in progress, while continually building upon that foundation, while spread is the exchange of knowledge and experience to others beyond the original implementing team. The literature supports the concept that sustainability is both multi-dimensional and multi-factorial and has several characteristics and pre-conditions. Tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations in the …

Analyzing And Modeling The Dysfunction Of Inhibitory Neurons In Alzheimer’S Disease, Carlos Perez, Jokubas Ziburkus, Ghamim Ullah
Physics Faculty Publications
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by the abnormal proteolytic processing of amyloid precursor protein, resulting in increased production of a self-aggregating form of beta amyloid (Aβ). Several lines of work on AD patients and transgenic mice with high Aβ levels exhibit altered rhythmicity, aberrant neuronal network activity and hyperexcitability reflected in clusters of hyperactive neurons, and spontaneous epileptic activity. Recent studies highlight that abnormal accumulation of Aβ changes intrinsic properties of inhibitory neurons, which is one of the main reasons underlying the impaired network activity. However, specific cellular mechanisms leading to interneuronal dysfunction are not completely …

The article presents the age distribution of production, consumption and net transfers of unpaid (household) service work for three European countries - Italy, the Netherlands and the UK. This type of analysis is made possible by the relatively new method of 'national time transfer accounts', which introduces the dimension of age into unpaid work. We find that patterns of unpaid work are significantly influenced by the institutional and cultural environment and that there are also large gender differences. The amount of unpaid work also changes over time. It is emphasised that it is important to include unpaid work in the …
