Cybermedicine: The Benefits And Risks Of Purchasing Drugs Over The Internet, David Mills Dec 2016

Cybermedicine: The Benefits And Risks Of Purchasing Drugs Over The Internet, David Mills

Journal of Technology Law & Policy

In today's rapidly changing world of e-commerce, almost anything can be bought over the Internet and delivered right to your front door. Virtually every day there is news of yet another company selling some type of product online. Included in this barrage of products is prescription medication. Not only is it possible to order prescription medication over the Internet, in some cases it is not necessary to be examined, or even to consult with a physician. To some, this new type of "cybermedicine" is an affront to traditional medicine, as well as potentially dangerous to consumers. In addition, the availability …

Camp Paws: A Positive Alternative To Suspensions In Early Elementary, Julie Boyd Dec 2016

Camp Paws: A Positive Alternative To Suspensions In Early Elementary, Julie Boyd

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Our schools report increasingly extreme and problematic behavior in our earliest grades. As early school expectations increase and teacher pressure mounts we are often at a loss when students enter school without basic social, emotional, and behavioral school readiness skills. Schools had the sole option of within-classroom interventions that often left the teacher and student frustrated and frequently resulted in suspensions. Further, some children prefer to be sent home, causing them to increase and escalate their problematic behavior on a regular basis. Appropriate school behavior is impossible to teach if the student is not in school!

These extreme behavior problems …

Shangri-La: From Utopia To Wasteland?, Bo Li Dec 2016

Shangri-La: From Utopia To Wasteland?, Bo Li

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The rapid urbanization movement in China’s uplands and up-streams, home to ethnic groups, are problematic for ecological and cultural reasons. Shangri-La County in southwest China is one such destination that has experienced such environmental and sociocultural challenges. The scale and speed of urbanization that has occurred in Shangri-La has outpaced what local communities can adapt to. As a consequence, a significant regional wetland as well as a culturally important water burial site are in serious distress.

Water Connection: Everyday Religion And Environments In Kathmandu Valley, Mukta S. Tamang Dec 2016

Water Connection: Everyday Religion And Environments In Kathmandu Valley, Mukta S. Tamang

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This case study aims to explore the relationship between ‘everyday religion’ and prospects for urban sustainability in the context of on-going changes -in Kathmandu. It argues that everyday religion plays a role in furnishing the incentive for urban residents to sustainably manage ‘culturalized nature’ in the city. In particular, I examine water, the practices surrounding its use, and how these practices connect various social realms. I suggest that water in Kathmandu valley plays an important role as a connector encompassing life and death, religion and environment, as well as politics and development.

Beyond Contradiction: Sacred-Profane Waters And The Dialectics Of Everyday Religion, Georgina Drew Dec 2016

Beyond Contradiction: Sacred-Profane Waters And The Dialectics Of Everyday Religion, Georgina Drew

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Studies of the relationship between religion and ecology are either highly enthusiastic about the ways that religious belief can motivate sound resource management or skeptical of the connection. Using an everyday religion approach, this text takes a middle ground to show that resources are variously interpreted in daily life and that religious orientations, while potentially supportive of environmentally sound action, are but one source of influence. Drawing from fieldwork, the discussion employs practice theory to look at how water resources in a Himalayan township are understood and the ways that notions of responsibility for sacred and profane waters are changing. …

Gender Bias And Organ Transplantation In Nepal, Sarah Rasmussen, Pragya Paneru, Kalpana Shrestha, Pukar C. Shrestha Dec 2016

Gender Bias And Organ Transplantation In Nepal, Sarah Rasmussen, Pragya Paneru, Kalpana Shrestha, Pukar C. Shrestha

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Women in Nepal are less likely to receive proper, high quality medical care than their male relatives. Live-donor kidney transplantation provides a compelling example of such disparities, as 84% of recipients are male, 75% of donors are female and most kidneys are transferred from mother to son and from wife to husband. In the case of transplantation, women are not just denied healthcare, they are also responsible for the health of their male kin. Based on semi-structured ethnographic interviews with transplant patients, organ donors, dialysis patients and relatives, this paper elaborates on the social and economic factors that have created …

From Ruler To Healer: Changes In Religious Experience In The Western Himalayas, Asaf Sharabi, Hagar Shalev Dec 2016

From Ruler To Healer: Changes In Religious Experience In The Western Himalayas, Asaf Sharabi, Hagar Shalev

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Research literature on the Western Himalayas emphasizes the theistic control of local deities. In the framework of this ruling system, described by the concepts of 'Little Kingdom' and 'government by deity', local deities functioned as gods and kings. They practice their royalty through a concrete divinity notion, aided by human mediums. In this article we will indicate the beginning of a conceptual change in the perception of a local deity named Mahāsū. Although Mahāsū is still perceived as a ruler, his role has become largely symbolic. We maintain that this illustrates how local theistic conceptions adapt to changes in the …

Historical Biogeography, Spatial Distribution, And Within-Host Interactions Of Avian Haemosporidian Parasites (Apicomplexa, Haemosporida), Leticia De Souza Soares Dec 2016

Historical Biogeography, Spatial Distribution, And Within-Host Interactions Of Avian Haemosporidian Parasites (Apicomplexa, Haemosporida), Leticia De Souza Soares

Dissertations

This dissertation addresses several aspects of the biogeography and evolution of avian malarial parasites (Haemosporida: Plasmodium and Haemoproteus), and the interactions of these pathogens with their hosts and other avian blood parasites. In Chapter 1, I investigate change in haemosporidian assemblages on the West Indies over millennial time scales, taking advantage of the historical isolation of islands by postglacial rising sea levels. I found that, the prevalence of parasite lineages is highly dynamic over periods from decades to thousands of years. Turnover of lineages requires more time than variation in lineage prevalence, suggesting that competitive exclusion of parasite lineages, likely …

Unraveling And Understanding The Therapeutic Self: A Heuristic Inquiry On Countertransference, Donna Decotiis Dec 2016

Unraveling And Understanding The Therapeutic Self: A Heuristic Inquiry On Countertransference, Donna Decotiis

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this heuristic inquiry was to discover how my countertransference informed my clinical internship experience. My research questions were: How does my countertransference inform my therapeutic relationships while working with survivors of domestic violence? How does my countertransference impact my clinical choices and my development as a dance/movement therapist? Data was collected through semi-structured journal entries that included both writing and art-making; this occurred three times per week during the last five weeks of my internship. I analyzed data sequentially through creative synthesis with a research consultant once per week, which began two weeks after data collection. Findings …

Physical Therapy Treatment Of A Patient With Chronic Low Back Pain And A Previous History Of A Substance Abuse Disorder: A Case Report, Marcus X. Alomar, Brian T. Swanson

Case Report Posters

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported that an estimated 27 million people in the United States have reported use of an illicit drug within the past month. Low back pain continues to be a major cause of disability in the United States, with an estimated 70 percent of adults experiencing low back pain at some point during their lifetime. Active exercise programs that include pain education and cognitive behavioral therapy demonstrated significant superior outcome at reducing pain intensity, anxiety/depression, disability, and fear-avoidance compared to therapeutic exercise and manual therapy alone for patients with non-specific chronic low …

The Defining Dna Methylation Signature Of Floating-Harbor Syndrome, Rebecca L. Hood, Laila C. Schenkel, Sarah M. Nikkel, Peter J. Ainsworth, Guillaume Pare, Kym M. Boycott, Dennis E. Bulman, Bekim Sadikovic Dec 2016

The Defining Dna Methylation Signature Of Floating-Harbor Syndrome, Rebecca L. Hood, Laila C. Schenkel, Sarah M. Nikkel, Peter J. Ainsworth, Guillaume Pare, Kym M. Boycott, Dennis E. Bulman, Bekim Sadikovic

Paediatrics Publications

Floating-Harbor syndrome (FHS) is an autosomal dominant genetic condition characterized by short stature, delayed osseous maturation, expressive language impairment, and unique facial dysmorphology. We previously identified mutations in the chromatin remodeling protein SRCAP (SNF2-related CBP Activator Protein) as the cause of FHS. SRCAP has multiple roles in chromatin and transcriptional regulation; however, specific epigenetic consequences of SRCAP mutations remain to be described. Using high resolution genome-wide DNA methylation analysis, we identified a unique and highly specific DNA methylation "epi-signature" in the peripheral blood of individuals with FHS. Both hyper and hypomethylated loci are distributed across the genome, preferentially occurring in …
