Not Enough To Go Around: Statistical Analysis Of Staffing Of Child Life Programs, Caroline Greene

Masters of Public Administration Theses

Child life programs are gaining popularity and support in pediatric care as the field grows. However, healthcare is growing rapidly and child life programs are struggling to advocate for their place within pediatric care despite the fact that the American Academy of Pediatrics defines child life as a necessity. This study seeks to answer the question: How does the level of pediatric care offered by a hospital affect the staffing of child life programs? The sample (N=154) hospital programs in this study offer varying levels of pediatric care. The independent variable is the level of pediatric care offered by hospitals, …

Assessment Guide And Pilot Study Of Ragsutra's Social Impact, Sandhya Bodapati, Grace Matthews

Miller Center Fellowship

Rangsutra links rural artisans to global markets, thereby providing equitable jobs while enabling economic stability and sustainable livelihoods. Rangsutra has a significant opportunity for growth and scaling its impact1, as it has begun to do in Barmer. To support this scaling, Global Social Benefit Fellows from the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship developed a socioeconomic impact assessment tool to measure Rangsutra’s impact on artisan employees. Fellows field-tested and refined the impact assessment tool. The fellows recommend Rangsutra continue to develop its capacity to assess its social impact assessment on artisans and their families. In doing so, the enterprise can enhance …

Behavioural Mhealth In Developing Countries: What About Culture? / Andre Matthias Müller, A.M. Müller Dec 2016

Behavioural Mhealth In Developing Countries: What About Culture? / Andre Matthias Müller, A.M. Müller

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Behavioural health in many developing countries (Lachat et al., 2013) one could suggest to simply make use of infrastructure that is already available – the mobile technology infrastructure. This seems sensible considering that modern mobile technology has reached almost every person on our planet. Additionally, the digital divide between developed and developing countries is closing and in 2016 95% of the global population has access to a mobile phone network while the number of mobile broadband subscriptions grows rapidly especially in developing countries (International Telecommunication Union, 2016). Mobile technology ownership is also not limited to any specific demographic because it …

Uric Acid Levels In Relation To Progression Of Multiple Sclerosis, Alexander A. Gosch, Mary F. Davis, Joshua C. Denny Dec 2016

Uric Acid Levels In Relation To Progression Of Multiple Sclerosis, Alexander A. Gosch, Mary F. Davis, Joshua C. Denny

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2017

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by demyelination in the central nervous system. In previous studies, serum uric acid (UA) levels have been implied as a useful biomarker in understanding MS disease progression and development. The majority of previous studies have found MS patients have a lower UA level than healthy controls, however some studies have found higher UA levels with MS patients. Previous studies have compared UA levels between subtypes of MS, but have not produced conclusive data. To better understand the correlation between UA levels and MS patients, we compared UA levels between our set of …

Barriers And Facilitators To Service Utilization For People With Dementia And Their Caregivers, Sana M. Hasan Dec 2016

Barriers And Facilitators To Service Utilization For People With Dementia And Their Caregivers, Sana M. Hasan

Honors Capstones

According to the CDC, there were 5.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease in 2013 (CDC 2013). That number is expected to nearly triple in 2050 as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age. Underutilization of services is something experienced by many demographics and is a considerable issue for individuals with dementia. This study sought to uncover factors correlated with underutilization of services for people with dementia through both a literature review and sit-down interviews with three healthcare professionals. Results indicated that cultural, financial, attitudinal and knowledge barriers exist for PwD (people with dementia) and their caregivers and may interfere …

Argumentation For Knowledge Representation, Conflict Resolution, Defeasible Inference And Its Integration With Machine Learning, Luca Longo Dec 2016

Argumentation For Knowledge Representation, Conflict Resolution, Defeasible Inference And Its Integration With Machine Learning, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Modern machine Learning is devoted to the construction of algorithms and computational procedures that can automatically improve with experience and learn from data. Defeasible argumentation has emerged as sub-topic of artificial intelligence aimed at formalising common-sense qualitative reasoning. The former is an inductive approach for inference while the latter is deductive, each one having advantages and limitations. A great challenge for theoretical and applied research in AI is their integration. The first aim of this chapter is to provide readers informally with the basic notions of defeasible and non-monotonic reasoning. It then describes argumentation theory, a paradigm for implementing defeasible …

Inside The Black Box: A Qualitative Evaluation Of Participants’ Experiences Of A Drug Treatment Court, Sarah Kuehn, Rebecca Ridener

The Qualitative Report

This study examined the program experiences of participants in a Drug Treatment Court located in Pennsylvania. In-depth interviews were used to investigate participants’ perceptions in regards to program components that aid them in the recovery process and challenges they face while completing the program. Results from the 16 interviews indicate that participants contribute their success in the program to its strict structure, accountability, and dedicated staff who buy into the court’s underlying principles of therapeutic jurisprudence. Implications for other drug treatment courts are discussed.

Qualitative Health Research Involving Indigenous Peoples: Culturally Appropriate Data Collection Methods, Amy L. Wright, Olive Wahoush, Marilyn Ballantyne, Chelsea Gabel, Susan M. Jack Dec 2016

Qualitative Health Research Involving Indigenous Peoples: Culturally Appropriate Data Collection Methods, Amy L. Wright, Olive Wahoush, Marilyn Ballantyne, Chelsea Gabel, Susan M. Jack

The Qualitative Report

Historically, health research involving Indigenous peoples has been fraught with problems, including researchers not addressing Indigenous research priorities and then subsequently often failing to utilize culturally appropriate methods. Given this historical precedence, some Indigenous populations may be reluctant to participate in research projects. In response to these concerns, the Government of Canada has developed the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2): Research Involving the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples of Canada, which stipulates the requirements for research collaborations with Indigenous communities. Utilizing this policy as an ethical standard for research practices, this paper describes, critiques and synthesizes the literature on culturally …
