Imagining A Nation: Society, Regionalism, And National Identity In The Greek War Of Independence, Christopher Kinley
Imagining A Nation: Society, Regionalism, And National Identity In The Greek War Of Independence, Christopher Kinley
Madison Historical Review
ABSTRACT: Modern Greece has held a marginal existence in the study of nationalism, and yet there is a wealth of information that it provides, which can broaden our understanding of nationalism and state-building, especially in the Balkans. The purpose of this article is to examine the various facets of Greek identity during the outbreak of the independence movement, and how identity shaped and affected the movement itself. This article argues that Greek identity was too multifarious to create a strongly defined national identity. Furthermore, this lack of national identity led to several years of civil war during the independence …
An Examination Of Considerations For The Future Of Global English, Nathan Riedel
An Examination Of Considerations For The Future Of Global English, Nathan Riedel
Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research
The driving force behind Globalization is Capitalism. As capitalists search for new avenues of investment and production, they must cross borders. The system morphs into a web of interdependent cultures and economies, with each culture and economy communicating with all the others. If these economies exist in different countries with different cultures, then language barriers become an issue. Furthermore, as Capitalism spreads to more cultures in a quest to fulfill profit requirements, more languages enter the global mix. A system consisting of five languages will eventually become a system consisting of nine or ten languages—the lines of communication become heavy …
Finding The Missing Links: A Comparison Of Social Network Analysis Methods, Shawn James Mehess
Finding The Missing Links: A Comparison Of Social Network Analysis Methods, Shawn James Mehess
Dissertations and Theses
Too many students leave school without even the essential skills (ACT, 2011), and many others are so drained by the experience they lack a desire to continue on to a post-secondary education. Academic engagement has emerged as a construct representing students’ personal investment in school (Greenwood, Delquadri, & Hall, 1984), and may be a psychological variable which can be intervened on. However, interventions must occur as quickly as possible to maximize their efficiency (Heckman, 2007). Students’ peer groups may be a particularly potent venue of intervention, however several options exist for how to go about measuring their social networks.

The Role Of Code-Switching And Language Context In Bilingual Phonetic Transfer, Daniel J. Olson
The Role Of Code-Switching And Language Context In Bilingual Phonetic Transfer, Daniel J. Olson
School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
The present study examines the effect of two potential catalysts for interlanguage phonetic interaction, code-switching and language mode, on the production of voice onset time (VOT) to better understand the role of (near) simultaneous dual language activation on phonetic production, as well as the nature of phonetic transfer. An oral production paradigm was carried out in which Spanish–English bilinguals produced words with initial voiceless stops as non-switched tokens, code-switched tokens in an otherwise monolingual context, and code-switched tokens in a bilingual context. Results demonstrated a degree of phonetic transfer associated with code-switching, either unidirectional or bi-directional. Specifically, English, with long …

Engaging Critical Thinking: Teaching Christian University Students How To Improve Their Thinking, Cedrick Valrie
Engaging Critical Thinking: Teaching Christian University Students How To Improve Their Thinking, Cedrick Valrie
Doctor of Ministry
Students in Christian university classrooms across North America largely lack the valuable skill of critical thinking. Such a skill can often appear as a daunting and lofty task that is reserved for scholars or those with a high IQ. Both faculty and students may feel uncertain of what it is, thereby avoiding it altogether. The primary intent of this dissertation study is to explore and explain critical thinking concepts that faculty can use to help their students improve their thinking about academics and about life. This study is secondarily designed to address the institution’s role in encouraging this process. It …

Claremont I And Ii - Were They Rightly Decided, And Where Have They Left Us?, John M. Lewis, Stephen E. Borofsky
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Our children embody the enduring wonder of life. They hold our hopes for the future. We want them to be happy, to succeed in whatever they do both in work and in play. We want them to contribute to our country and the world in constructive ways.
But for these hopes to be realized our children must be educated-they must possess the requisite skills and knowledge to function well in this ever changing world. Yet, are we, as a society, meeting our responsibility to educate our children? What do we expect of our public schools? How important are these …

Refusal Strategies In L1 And L2 Among Undergraduate Egyptian Students, Alaa Kamel Darwish
Theses and Dissertations
The current study investigated the refusal strategies realized by young adult Egyptian students in their L1 (Egyptian Arabic) and L2 (English). The study also explored the socio-pragmatic features of Egyptian refusals in terms of power and distance as well as the pragmatic transfer in the students’ L2 refusals. 2270 cases of refusal were collected by means of a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) and field notes. The sample consisted of 200 DCTs (collected from 100 students in L1 and L2) and 60 instances of refusals extracted from field notes collected by the researcher. The data were analyzed according to an adaptation …

Minor interviewed her for her position and she engaged with him on the train collection she saw in his office. She recalls giving him advice on books to purchase for his Classica collection. Myers loaned her a particular book and he expressed anxiety over its safety. She observes that he was not an astute collector of books in her area of expertise but recalls that he kept "want lists" of titles to look for and he would also look for items she was interested in. Sultan believes that Myers' "curiosity about learning" was infectious and important for students, staff and …

Preaching From A Biblical Anthropology: Sources And Methods For Correlating The Gospel And The Human Condition, Paul N. D. Miller
Preaching From A Biblical Anthropology: Sources And Methods For Correlating The Gospel And The Human Condition, Paul N. D. Miller
Doctor of Ministry Theses
Preachers’ understandings of the human condition are foundational to preaching that is faithful and effective, yet are often unreflective or dogmatic. Biblical anthropology provides both revelation about humankind and a variety of perspectives, aiding the preacher in addressing diverse situations. Topics explored: Old Testament anthropology undergirding the New; the fundamental unity of the human being; the differentiation of law, sin, and human nature; the doctrine of theological anthropology; law and gospel preaching. Research draws on preachers’ journals and listener feedback surveys to identify and demonstrate patterns of creative proclamation of the human situation and a corresponding Gospel response.

How The Greek Press Constructed The "Greek Economic Crisis", Maria Elena Kuntz
How The Greek Press Constructed The "Greek Economic Crisis", Maria Elena Kuntz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since 2008, there has been a surge of interest in and research on the relationship between news media and economic reporting, particularly as it concerns financial crises. The 2008 U.S. subprime mortgage crisis, quickly followed by the economic crisis that began to unfold in Greece in 2009, spurred researchers to examine how newspapers around the world report on the complex, globalized economy. In the pursuit of understanding transnational economic processes, publics rely on news media to provide information about the meaning of economic events, especially crises. As such, newspapers are key players in constructing the narratives of crises.

The Sophist In The Cave: Education Through Names In Plato's Republic, Daniel Propson
The Sophist In The Cave: Education Through Names In Plato's Republic, Daniel Propson
Wayne State University Dissertations
The Cratylus is often considered an isolated dialogue in Plato’s corpus, and the major theses of the Cratylus are often seen as disposable and problematic elements in Platonic thought. When one carefully compares this dialogue, however, to Plato’s comments elsewhere about rhetoric and dialectic, a set of fascinating connections emerge. In this dissertation, I argue that the Republic ought to be read in light of the Cratylus. In the former dialogue, Plato is vitally concerned with the use of accurate language in his republic, a fact most clearly brought out by his accusation against demagogues: that they “give names” to …

We are hosts, we are hosts and we’re deeply aware of it.
We are aware of the pollutants and particulates that exist in our air, aware of the
growing presence of UVB radiation that touches our skin, aware of the microbes,
bacteria and viruses that call our interiors home, more completely aware than we’ve
ever been that to have a body contemporarily is to acknowledge a multiplicity that
can be wholly uncomfortable and even alien: that we are hosts to so much seemingly
unwanted material, sensation and life.
The Twenty-Sixth Amendment, Russell James Henderson
The Twenty-Sixth Amendment, Russell James Henderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a history of the Twenty-Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Passed by Congress in 1971, it set the national suffrage age at eighteen for all state and federal elections. It remains the last federal amendment to broaden voting rights and the most quickly ratified amendment to the Constitution. Those few scholars who have written about the 18-vote law uniformly explain that it emerged as recompense for patriotic duty; i.e. if teenagers were old enough to fight for America in Vietnam, they were also old enough to vote in U.S. elections. This dissertation agrees that young Americans …

The Crisis Of Character In The 21st Century American University, Its Historical Counterparts, And Suggested Remedies, Tyler David Norton
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Higher education in the United States is in the midst of a crisis. Many administrators and faculty are grappling with the question, “what is the purpose of a college education?” In an attempt to resolve this crisis, some education leaders and policy makers have turned to false idols. They embraced student learning outcomes and quantifiable measurement metrics to justify the university’s raison d’etre. This occurred at the same time as institutions abandoned their religious heritage, they incidentally threw away moral elements as well.
