The Greek Beat And Underground Scene Of The 1960s And 1970s, Eftychia Mikelli
The Greek Beat And Underground Scene Of The 1960s And 1970s, Eftychia Mikelli
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "The Greek Beat and Underground Scene of the 1960s and 1970s" Eftychia Mikelli discusses the renewed interest in the Beat Generation in Greece. She argues that it is less known that the Beats exercised significant influence upon Greek underground literature and culture in the sixties and seventies, inspiring the development of a Greek Beat "hybrid." Bearing the influences of US-American Beat, new writing emerged which was also shaped by a distinctively Athenian social and cultural context, eventually leading to the formation of the Greek "Scene." This is the term by which Beat-influenced Greek artists, such as Spyros …

Using Qualitative Methods For The Analysis Of Adult Immigrants’ L2 Needs: Findings From A Research Project In Greece Focusing On School-Parents Communication, George Androulakis, Efi Mastorodimou, Riki Van Boeschoten
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
In the Greek context of economic crisis and of emerging xenophobic ideas and discourse, this article presents some findings from a research project which had the ambition to give voice to immigrants in Greece about their own language and communication needs. The target group of the project were immigrant parents, whose children attend public schools in the area of Volos. Communication between schools and immigrant families is fragmentary or non-existent, causing frustration for parents and teachers. The ELMEGO project used focus groups in order to construct social meaning related to migrant discourse, and shed light on it from an interdisciplinary …

Life Satisfaction: A Study Of Engagement And The Academic Progress Of High School Students With Specific Learning Disabilities, Rebecca Dilling
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand how high school students with specific learning disabilities describe life satisfaction and its impact on student motivation, academic engagement, and academic progress. Bruner’s constructivist theory guided this research. Other theories included: Piaget’s cognitive development theory, Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory, Vygotsky’s social learning theory, Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, Bowlby’s attachment theory, Dewey’s brain-based learning theory, Glasser’s control theory of motivation, Bandura’s social cognitive theory, Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory, and Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. Data collection tools included the researcher’s journal, classroom observations, student interviews, two student focus …

Chiral Separation And Quantitation Of Khat Designer Drug- Synthetic Cathinones- In Urine And Plasma, Rashed Humaid Khalfan Bin Huzaim
Accounting Dissertations
This dissertation is concerned with the latest class of the new designer drugs (NDDs) which overruns the world in the last few years as “legal high” drugs, under the name of bath salts or synthetic cathinones. Bath salts are a group of central nervous system stimulants that consists mainly of synthetic cathinone derivatives. In nature, cathinone (β-keto amphetamine) exists in the leaves of the Catha edulis plant which can be found easily in the region of northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. All synthetic cathinone derivatives contain a chiral center and most probably sold out as a racemic mixture. Commonly, …

The Corpus Juris Civilis: A Guide To Its History And Use, Frederick W. Dingledy
The Corpus Juris Civilis: A Guide To Its History And Use, Frederick W. Dingledy
Library Staff Publications
The Corpus Juris Civilis is indispensable for Roman law research. It is a vital pillar of modern law in many European nations, and influential in other countries. Scholars and lawyers still refer to it today. This valuable publication, however, may seem impenetrable at first, and references to it can be hard to decipher or detect. This guide provides a history of the Corpus Juris Civilis and the forms it has taken, states why it is still an important resource today, and offers some tips and tools for research using it.

The Lord’S Supper In The Early Church: Covenant Extension Or Eucharistic Presence?, Silvia Bacchiocchi
The Lord’S Supper In The Early Church: Covenant Extension Or Eucharistic Presence?, Silvia Bacchiocchi
Andrews University Seminary Student Journal
This study seeks to show how the Lord’s Supper lost its relational and historical (past-present-future) covenant focus and instead became fixed on the Platonic now of mystical contemplation, displacing the eschatological hope of Christ’s physical return with the real presence of Christ in the eucharist. This resulted from the Hellenistic interpretation of reality in general and of Christian rituals in particular. The first section explores the nature of God and the Old Testament covenant, followed by the covenant’s continuity in the New Testament through the Lord’s Supper. The second portion analyzes the Didache’s Jewish-Christian perspective of the Lord’s Supper and …

Mathematics Learning Support Models And Student Success At A Tennessee Community College, Bobby Allen Dixon Jr.
Mathematics Learning Support Models And Student Success At A Tennessee Community College, Bobby Allen Dixon Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Every year thousands of students make preparations to pursue a college degree. Many are high school seniors, but a large percentage of the population are nontraditional age students who are years removed from a formal classroom setting. Included in the list of preparations is an examination whose results will be used to determine each individual’s readiness to be academically successful at the collegiate level. These examinations assess student’s abilities in the areas of reading, English composition, and mathematics. The results of these examinations show that at the community college level more than half of these students will need remediation in …
Consequences Of The Angular Spectrum Decomposition Of A Focused Beam, Including Slower Than C Beam Propagation, Gérard Gouesbet, James A. Lock
Consequences Of The Angular Spectrum Decomposition Of A Focused Beam, Including Slower Than C Beam Propagation, Gérard Gouesbet, James A. Lock
Physics Faculty Publications
When dealing with light scattering and propagation of an electromagnetic beam, there are essentially two kinds of expansions which have been used to describe the incident beam (i) a discrete expansion involving beam shape coefficients and (ii) a continuous expansion in terms of an angular spectrum of plane waves. In this paper, we demonstrate that the angular spectrum decomposition readily leads to two important consequences, (i) laser light beams travel in free space with an effective velocity that is smaller than the speed of light c, and (ii) the optical theorem does not hold for arbitrary shaped beams, both …
Historical And Cultural Implications Of Bogomilism, Maja Angelovska, Ruzhica Cacanoska
Historical And Cultural Implications Of Bogomilism, Maja Angelovska, Ruzhica Cacanoska
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Bogomilism represents a spiritual manifestation, dualistic in nature, of a religious expression, and a social and philosophical orientation. The essence of Bogomilism can be followed on the basis of several key postulates, such as dualism, a specific theological and dogmatic characteristic, the support of ethical principles within their social life, and finally the political dimension of teaching the determinants which rise from the overall social and political processes in medieval times. The aim of this article is to present the historical and cultural aspects of this movement, which left visible traces in the spiritual culture of Macedonia, Balkans, and Byzantium.
The Role Of Sensory Experiences And Emotions In Craft Practice, Camilla Groth
The Role Of Sensory Experiences And Emotions In Craft Practice, Camilla Groth
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Emotions have traditionally been overlooked in the practice of scientific research. In the field of design and craft research, too, personal feelings and emotions have been considered as interfering with the rigour and validation of the research. However, as a result of findings in neuroscience, a new understanding has emerged, providing emotions a central role in risk assessment and decision making processes. This has implications also for how we understand craft practice. In this practice-led research, a craft practitioner analysed five video-recordings of herself while throwing clay blindfolded. The researcher-practitioner specifically studied critical incidents in the throwing process and made …

Classics And Rockefeller Center: John D. Rockefeller Jr. And The Use Of Classicism In Public Space, Jared A. Simard
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation situates the mythologically-inspired artwork of Rockefeller Center in the classical education of its sole proprietor, John D. Rockefeller Jr. I argue that his extensive classical education at the Browning School and Brown University led to an adult interest in the Classics. Through extensive, original archival research at the Rockefeller Archive Center and the Rockefeller Center Archive Center, I demonstrate that this interest was expressed through his philanthropy of prestigious institutions such as the American Academy in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, and the excavations of the Athenian Agora. Colonial Williamsburg and Versailles are also …
Unjustified Punishment: A Recipe For Failure In Egypt, Hend Hanafy
Unjustified Punishment: A Recipe For Failure In Egypt, Hend Hanafy
Theses and Dissertations
Since the beginning of a new phase of governance in Egypt on the 3rd of July 2013, there has been a remarkable trend of using punishment as a mechanism for repression to control of the public realm in relation to protests, civil society organizations’ work, and political opposition dissent, especially regarding Muslim Brotherhood organization. This paper argues that such use of punishment though possibly successful in the short run is likely to fail in the long run. Such failure is due to the lack of moral and philosophical justifications of punishment, whether based on consequentialism or retributivism theories of punishment. Further, …
C-Salt: Conversational Style Attribution Given Legislative Transcriptions, Garrett D. Summers
C-Salt: Conversational Style Attribution Given Legislative Transcriptions, Garrett D. Summers
Master's Theses
Common authorship attribution is well described by various authors summed up in Jacques Savoy’s work. Namely, authorship attribution is the process “whereby the author of a given text must be determined based on text samples written by known authors [48].” The field of authorship attribution has been explored in various contexts. Most of these works have been done on the authors written text. This work seeks to approach a similar field to authorship attribution. We seek to attribute not a given author to a work based on style, but a style itself that is used by a group of people. …
Study Of Alternative Functions Of The Mitochondrial Protein Bak, Ma Su Su Aung
Study Of Alternative Functions Of The Mitochondrial Protein Bak, Ma Su Su Aung
Student Theses and Dissertations
Research in the past 15 years has established roles for the pro-apoptotic proteins Bax and Bak in release of death signaling molecules from mitochondria. The process involves relocation of cytoplasmic Bax into the mitochondrial outer membrane to form a giant pore, MAC. Another MAC component, Bak, is constitutively present in the outer membrane regardless of apoptotic stimulation. In this study we investigated the role of Bak in mitochondrial function outside the context of apoptosis. We examined the effects of Bak elimination on emission of reactive oxygen species from mitochondria. Our results indicate a disturbance of free-radical production both in cultured …
The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball
The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball
Marian Studies
The biblical emphasis of Vatican II and later developments, such as the address of Pope Benedict XVI to the Marian Congress of 2012 about studying the Blessed Mother from many different perspectives, have led mariologists to a new appreciation for a determined biblical-anthropological approach. This approach has great significance for understanding the heart of the Woman who “held all these things in her heart.” Mary’s heart connects all of us to her--as woman, mother, mystic, and prophet—to her who holds the Lord in her heart, a heart completely united to the heart of her Son, Jesus the Christ.
Stigma Is The Origin Of Bullying, Mike Huggins
Stigma Is The Origin Of Bullying, Mike Huggins
Journal of Catholic Education
Bullying in schools has escalated far beyond childhood teasing. In recent years, torture, murder, and suicide have been associated with bullying (van der Kolk et al., 2007). While bullying is unacceptable behavior in any school, it is particularly problematic in Catholic schools, which must embody Gospel values. Catholic education rests upon essential foundations, three of which include a Christian understanding of what constitutes humanity, finds expression in community formed through communion and essential relationship, and which is itself exemplified and sustained by a Gospel witness (Miller, 2006). This article draws from national news stories about court cases related to bullying …
The Hebrew-Jewish Disconnection, Jacey Peers
The Hebrew-Jewish Disconnection, Jacey Peers
Master’s Theses and Projects
A common language creates a cultural community regardless of geographical boundaries. In the Jewish community this language is Hebrew. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship that American Jews have with the Hebrew language in terms of comprehension, the value they place on Hebrew, and how they position themselves on the Jewish spectrum (religiously and culturally). The research carried out was both qualitative and quantitative, including both a survey and interviews. While the subjective assessments by questionnaire takers indicated that many did not find a deep connection between Hebrew and their religious identity, a closer look provided …
Póliza: A Bilingual Anthology Of Postmodern Peninsular Spanish Women Poets, Jacqueline Osborn
Póliza: A Bilingual Anthology Of Postmodern Peninsular Spanish Women Poets, Jacqueline Osborn
Honors Projects
Within this project I endeavor to translate a series of poems from seven postmodern female Spanish poets, exploring the challenges and idiosyncrasies of not only the migration between languages, but those specifically between Spanish and English as well as those particular to poetry translation. Of course, there are inherent limits to this process. Regarding the differences between English and Spanish, such difficulties as the presence of naturally reflexive verbs, neutral pronouns, more efficient nominalization of adjectives, and the greater presence of the subjunctive tense in Spanish arise. Respecting the problem of poetry, the structure, rhythm, and even the tone of …

Jesus, The New Temple Mark 11:20–25 In Its Narrative Context, Daniel Jeffrey Berge
Jesus, The New Temple Mark 11:20–25 In Its Narrative Context, Daniel Jeffrey Berge
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
The cursing of the fig tree in Mark has led to myriad readings, and wide-ranging discussions from botany to textual criticism. This work argues that reading Mark 11:20–25 in its narrative context shows that the cursing of the fig tree in Mark should be seen in the light of the previous temple-cleansing scene, signaling the condemnation of the present temple order. However, in 11:20–25, the Marcan Jesus provides his followers with encouragement to have faith that God is still with them despite the condemnation of the present temple order. The very activities that one would have seen as dependent on …
Slavery: The Main Ingredient To An Ancient Greek Polis' Military Dominance, Steven T. Tran
Slavery: The Main Ingredient To An Ancient Greek Polis' Military Dominance, Steven T. Tran
Young Historians Conference
Spartan and Athens' victories against the Persians and their eventual military dominance cannot be attributed to military strategy or government alone. The social acceptance of slavery provided the foundation for Greek poleis' social and economic spheres, leading to the development of slave deployment during the Persian Wars and Peloponnesian War. An in-depth analysis of Classical Greece slavery shows that its prevalence is much greater than what previous historians have thought, and more notably, that it was one of the most massive slave usage in history, allowing for the development of a dominating western world.
An Anthropological Exploration Of Latino Immigrant Identity In Contemporary Migration Literature, Laura Hoppe
An Anthropological Exploration Of Latino Immigrant Identity In Contemporary Migration Literature, Laura Hoppe
Honors Capstone Projects
Immigration remains one of the hottest topics of debate in the United States. As a country constructed by immigrants and home to over one million newly admitted immigrants each year, the immigration phenomenon has contributed extensively to the multiculturalism seen in the United States today. While many immigrant groups have historically lived in marginalization, the 21st century has proven especially difficult for Latino immigrants--those from Spanish and Portuguese-speaking Latin America. As the current largest immigrant group, Latinos have received a lot of backlash and discrimination in the U.S. Many of these immigrants, whether they immigrate to the U.S. temporarily or …
