Free radical-mediated damage to macromolecules and the resulting oxidative modification of different cellular components are a common feature of aging, and this process becomes much more pronounced in age-associated pathologies, including Alzheimer disease (AD). In particular, proteins are particularly sensitive to oxidative stress-induced damage and these irreversible modifications lead to the alteration of protein structure and function. In order to maintain cell homeostasis, these oxidized/damaged proteins have to be removed in order to prevent their toxic accumulation. It is generally accepted that the age-related accumulation of “aberrant” proteins results from both the increased occurrence of damage and the decreased efficiency …
Touch Painting: An Art Therapy Intervention On Anxiety In Older Adults, Carrie May Ezell
Touch Painting: An Art Therapy Intervention On Anxiety In Older Adults, Carrie May Ezell
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This study investigated the use of two art therapy painting interventions with anxious older adults in long-term care or assisted living facilities in the Southeast. The control group used ‘traditional painting’ as defined by using a paintbrush and the intervention group used ‘touch painting’ as defined by using a foam core board with tissue paper. All participants in the study (n=44) were identified as having symptoms of anxiety as determined by their facility staff. Participants completed the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) as a pre-test and post-test assessment. Both groups attended four art therapy sessions with the following themes: (1) Free …
Caregivers' Considerations On Age-Friendly Community Features, Kathy Black, Adrian N.S. Badana, Kathryn Hyer
Caregivers' Considerations On Age-Friendly Community Features, Kathy Black, Adrian N.S. Badana, Kathryn Hyer
Aging Studies Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
As communities strive to create age-friendly accommodations that promote the health and wellbeing of a growing aging citizenry, the concomitant growth of caregivers requires additional planning considerations. Increasingly, persons providing care are managing their own aging and negotiating their community's infrastructure for both themselves as well as on behalf of their aged loved ones. This study reports on the findings from a global age-friendly community effort that examined caregivers' perception of the importance of community features across three clustered domains of community life: the built environment; the social environment; and, community and health supports. The study surveyed caregivers (n = …

Articles
Growth hormone receptor knockout (GHR-KO) mice are long lived with improved health span, making this an excellent model system for understanding biochemical mechanisms important to cognitive reserve. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate differences in cognition and glutamatergic dynamics between aged (20- to 24-month-old) GHR-KO and littermate controls. Glutamate plays a critical role in hippocampal learning and memory and is implicated in several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease. Spatial learning and memory were assessed using the Morris water maze (MWM), whereas independent dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, and CA1 basal glutamate, release, and uptake measurements were conducted in …

Posttraumatic Growth Among Older Adults With Late-Life Cancer Diagnoses, Aasha I. Hoogland
Posttraumatic Growth Among Older Adults With Late-Life Cancer Diagnoses, Aasha I. Hoogland
Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology
Gerontological scholarship has often focused on the ways older adults deteriorate or decline with time, but it is plausible that positive change continues into and throughout old age. Late-life psychosocial growth may even be facilitated by a life-altering event such as a cancer diagnosis, a phenomenon broadly termed posttraumatic growth (PTG). PTG has been examined in a variety of general population samples, but there is a noticeable lack of research on PTG that focuses on older adults—a population for whom cancer diagnoses are particularly prevalent. Using a mixed methods design, this dissertation was designed to advance our understanding of PTG …
The Role Of Capillaries In The Lesser Ailments Of Old Age And In Alzheimer's Disease And Vascular Dementia: The Potential Of Pro-Therapeutic Angiogenesis, Charles T. Ambrose
The Role Of Capillaries In The Lesser Ailments Of Old Age And In Alzheimer's Disease And Vascular Dementia: The Potential Of Pro-Therapeutic Angiogenesis, Charles T. Ambrose
Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications
Apart from chronic diseases (arthritis, diabetes, etc.), old age is generally characterized by three lesser ailments: muscle weakness, minor memory lapses, and cold intolerance. This trio of complaints may have a common, underlying cause, namely, the age-associated reduced microcirculation in muscles, brain, skin, and elsewhere in the body. The Angiogenesis Hypothesis proposes that old age is in part a deficiency disease due to the decline in angiogenic (AG) factors, resulting in a reduced capillary density (CD) throughout the body. Over fifty published papers document waning levels of AG factors and/or decreased CD in various organ systems of aged animals and …
The Role Of Unpaid Volunteers In A Group Caregiving Approach : Validation Of The Sharetm The Care Program, Amy Hegener
The Role Of Unpaid Volunteers In A Group Caregiving Approach : Validation Of The Sharetm The Care Program, Amy Hegener
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The growing population of older adults will lead to a change in the age structure in the United States, with older people outnumbering younger people for the first time. The changing age structure will affect the current workforce and place demands on the health and long term services and supports system. Moreover, with the suspension of many government programs and hospitals working to cut readmissions the burden on caregivers is increasing. On the other hand, the new generation of older adults will be healthier and better educated than previous generations. They are expected to be more productive and civically engaged, …
Workplace Attachment Among Social Workers In The Veteran Health Care Sector : A Mixed Methods Study, Michael Lawrence Clarkson-Hendrix
Workplace Attachment Among Social Workers In The Veteran Health Care Sector : A Mixed Methods Study, Michael Lawrence Clarkson-Hendrix
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study expanded the application of attachment theory, referred to as workplace attachment theory in this study, to investigate worker behavior, principally in relation to retention and turnover among social workers in a Veteran health care sector agency. Interdisciplinary collaboration, including whether it was related to workplace attachment, was also a significant feature. Three main aims were to identify (i) workplace attachment experiences; (ii) relational, social and physical contingencies that affected workplace attachment security; and (iii) the extent to which workplace attachment is influenced by interdisciplinary collaboration. Using a sample of social workers, a mixed methods research design involving a …
Determination Of The Effects Of Cognitive Activity On Postural Sway, Sarah J. Boyd
Determination Of The Effects Of Cognitive Activity On Postural Sway, Sarah J. Boyd
Honors Capstones
Postural control is an elaborate task, especially when simultaneous distractions and cognitive actions arise. In order to determine how postural sway is influenced by concurrent cognitive tasks, research was performed both on younger and older adults. The hypothesis was that postural sway would increase for both younger and older adults during dual-tasks with cognitive activity and balancing. The results showed that postural sway did increase for older adults when the cognitive tasks were difficult. However, this did not hold true for younger adults who showed no significant difference in sway with cognitive activity.
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Adult Day Care On Alleviating Caregiver Stress/Burden, Lessep Duncan, Joan Bowla, Rosena Tanis
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Adult Day Care On Alleviating Caregiver Stress/Burden, Lessep Duncan, Joan Bowla, Rosena Tanis
Florida Public Health Review
Though not extensive, the literature points to the efficacy of Adult Day Care (ADC) in alleviating stress on caregivers in several and differing ways. In line with this evidence, the findings from the evaluation of Northwest Focal Point’s (NWFP) ADC program conducted by the Florida Atlantic University Evaluation Team indicates that ADC provides necessary relief and reduces the strain of caregiving on caregivers. Two measurement instruments: one to measure the level of caregiver strain and one to measure the effectiveness of ADC in alleviating this strain comprising five dimensions of caregiving strain and five dimensions of ADC impact in reducing …

Self- And Other-Oriented Motivations Associated With Emotional Suppression Of Internalized And Externalized Negative Emotions: A Multiethnic Self-Report Study In The Netherlands, Snežana Stupar-Rutenfrans, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Johnny R. J. Fontaine
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
We were interested in the motivations associated with emotional suppression, their relationship with negative emotions in self-reported emotional events, and their cross-cultural similarities and differences. Based on a framework of human values (Schwartz, 1994) and internalization-externalization (Krueger & Markon, 2006), we expected in the current study that self-reported motivations to suppress negative emotions are either self- or other-oriented. The sample consisted of 354 Dutch majority members, 319 immigrants from non-Western, and 368 from Western countries. The two-dimensional solution of self- and other-oriented motivations was confirmed. Non-Western immigrants scored higher on other-oriented motivation than Western immigrants, but no interethnic differences were …
Wisdom In The Trees : A Research Project On How Elders Living In The Treehouse Community Together With Foster Children And Their Families Continue Or Expand The Quality Of Meaning Making In Their Everyday Lives, Elizabeth Hinze
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study examined the oldest members of The Treehouse Community in western Massachusetts which is an intentional intergenerational community. Within this study 10 older adults living in the community participated in either a community held event or one-on-one interviews describing their felt life experiences before and after moving to Treehouse. Most of the participants made it clear that they did not show up at Treehouse looking for something to occupy their time. Rather this model which supports foster families and their children through an intergenerational lens corresponds with their life work, whether it be they had worked in child …
Aging, Discourse, And Ideology, Julia Mckinney
Aging, Discourse, And Ideology, Julia Mckinney
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the language practices of members of the Andrus Center, a recreational senior center located in the southeastern United States. It specifically examines how “young-old” members, or those who had relatively recently made the transition to older identity, invoked and contested widely circulating ideologies of aging in the course of constructing their local age identities. Rather than treating age as an objective, individual characteristic, as commonly presumed in sociolinguistics, this study highlights the ways in which age identities were relationally and emergently coconstructed. Through analyses of interactional and ethnographic data collected over 18 months, I argue that mainstream …
Linking Discrimination To Health: Does Coping Matter For The Mental Health Of Black Men And Women?, Calley Fisk
Linking Discrimination To Health: Does Coping Matter For The Mental Health Of Black Men And Women?, Calley Fisk
Theses and Dissertations
Efforts to explain the negative association between discrimination and mental health have examined psychosocial responses to discrimination, such as coping responses or resources. However, there is limited research on how these coping strategies affect the discrimination-health relationship among Black Americans. Using data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), the present study examines the effect of perceived discrimination on depressive symptoms separately for men and women and tests the mediating and moderating influences of five coping strategies on this relationship. Results suggest that social support partially mediates the negative association between discrimination and mental health for men and women. …

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia Reactivity To A Sad Film Predicts Depression Symptom Improvement And Symptomatic Trajectory, Vanessa Panaite, Alexandra Cowden Hindash, Lauren M. Bylsma, Brent J. Small, Kristen Salomon, Johnathan Rottenberg
Psychology Faculty Publications
Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reactivity, an index of cardiac vagal tone, has been linked to self-regulation and the severity and course of depression (Rottenberg, 2007). Although initial data supports the proposition that RSA withdrawal during a sad film is a specific predictor of depression course (Fraguas, 2007; Rottenberg, 2005), the robustness and specificity of this finding are unclear. To provide a stronger test, RSA reactivity to three emotion films (happy, sad, fear) and to a more robust stressor, a speech task, were examined in currently depressed individuals (n = 37), who were assessed for their degree of symptomatic improvement over …

Judging The Social Sciences In Carter V Canada (Ag), Jodi Lazare
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
This paper examines a recent example of evidence-based decision making affecting social policy at the trial court level. It offers a close reading of Carter v Canada (AG), decided by the British Columbia Supreme Court, and of Justice Lynn Smith's careful scrutiny of the social science evidence when invalidating the Criminal Code prohibition on assistance in dying. Drawing on literature which examines the legal system's use of social science evidence and expert witnesses, this paper suggests that Justice Smith's treatment of the evidence in Carter provides an example of skilled judicial treatment of the extensive amounts of social science evidence …

Are Graduating Students Ready For Financial Aspects Of Social Work Practice?, Julie M. Birkenmaier, Vernon Loke, Sally A. Hageman
Social Work Faculty Publications
Graduating students must be prepared with knowledge and skills for the financial aspects of social work practice. This study examines graduating students’ attitudes and perceptions about client finances, as well as their financial knowledge. Internet survey results (n = 116) of BSW and MSW graduating students indicate that respondents (a) perceive a limited function for discussing client financial circumstances in practice, (b) understand the relevance, however, of client finances, (c) are unprepared to address this aspect, and (d) are supportive of integrating this content into required policy and practice courses. Teaching and curricular implications, along with programmatic recommendations, are included.
Measuring Older Adult Confidence In The Courts And Law Enforcement, Joseph A. Hamm, Lindsey E. Wylie, Eve M. Brank
Measuring Older Adult Confidence In The Courts And Law Enforcement, Joseph A. Hamm, Lindsey E. Wylie, Eve M. Brank
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Older adults are an increasingly relevant subpopulation for criminal justice policy but, as yet, are largely neglected in the relevant research. The current research addresses this by reporting on a psychometric evaluation of a measure of older adults’ Confidence in Legal Institutions (CLI). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) provided support for the unidimensionality and reliability of the measures. In addition, participants’ CLI was related to cynicism, trust in government, dispositional trust, age, and education, but not income or gender. The results provide support for the measures of confidence in the courts and law enforcement, so we present the scale as a …
