Assessing Functional Impairment In Individuals With Mild Cognitive Impairment, Patricia Da Cunha Belchior, Taranpreet Bains, Jennifer Hargadon, Sofia Tran, Courtney Uphoff, Jade Chiu W. Kwok, Navaldeep Kaur, Isabelle Gelinas

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

To date, there is no consensus on how to assess functional impairment in individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and this lack of consensus is reflected in the clinical practice. Since the criterion used in the literature is very vague, clinicians are still left without much guidance in this area. Thus, the main goal of this study was to examine how functional impairment in individuals with MCI has been assessed in the literature.

An electronic database search strategy was developed in consultation with an experienced librarian. Four databases (CINAHL, PsycINFO, PubMed, and MEDLINE) were searched from 2000 to May 2014 …

Building Expert Consensus On Including Indicators Of Moisture Associated Skin Damage In The National Database Of Nursing Quality Indicators (Ndnqi), Mary Caroleen Arnold Long

Capstone Projects

Pressure ulcer (PU) data are collected by hospitals and reported quarterly as a nursing sensitive quality indicator via the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI). Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) and gluteal intertriginous dermatitis (ITD), both forms of moisture associated skin damage (MASD), are caused by moisture, not pressure or shear. These two forms of skin damage may be mistaken for PUs and may be reported in error as PUs. If the assessment of the skin damage is incorrect, the reporting is incorrect and the NDNQI database is incorrect. If the NDNQI database is incorrect then practice and policy regarding identification, …

Sensory Closet Program Design For Alzheimer's And Dementia Population, Grace V. Willard

MOT Student Capstones

Background: The prevalence of individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia is growing exponentially in long term care facilities, with restraints and seclusion becoming the method of intervention when behaviors arise (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2015). North Carolina is moving to decrease the amount of physical restraints and psychotropic medication usage in long term care to decrease harm caused to the residents. Project Purpose: This project intends to design a sensory integration closet program for use in a long-term care facility to facilitate a decrease in behavior outbursts and correlating psychotropic medication usage in residents with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Coinciding training …

Institute on Aging Publications

This report describes adult foster homes in Oregon. An adult foster home (AFH) is a type of licensed community-based care (CBC) setting that provides residential, personal care, and health-related services, primarily to older adults. The study collected information from adult foster homes to achieve the following four main goals.

  1. Describe adult foster home characteristics, including staffing types and levels, policies, and monthly charges and fees
  2. Describe current residents’ health and social characteristics
  3. Compare current results to prior Oregon surveys and to national studies of similar setting types to identify changes and possible trends
  4. Compare setting types for differences that might …

Planning For Aging In Place: Stimulating A Market And Government Response, Mildred Warner, George C. Homsy, Lydia J. Morken Apr 2016

Planning For Aging In Place: Stimulating A Market And Government Response, Mildred Warner, George C. Homsy, Lydia J. Morken

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

Using a national survey of local governments, we explore the drivers of planning and service delivery for older adults. Our regression models find that planning for aging and elder engagement are the most influential factors explaining the level of community services for elders. Services are lower in less dense suburban and rural communities, and market-based services are lower in communities with more senior poverty. This creates two challenges for planners: to help generate a market response for aging services, and to articulate the link between the built environment and services so communities that lack supportive physical environments can become better …

The Things They Carried: The Biological Residue Of Childhood Misfortune, Patricia M. Morton Apr 2016

The Things They Carried: The Biological Residue Of Childhood Misfortune, Patricia M. Morton

Open Access Dissertations

There is a well-established relationship between childhood misfortune and adult health, but how these early-life experiences “get under the skin” to later manifest as poor health is less clear. To elucidate this process, this dissertation investigates (1) how childhood conditions influence immune functioning and (2) whether these physiological consequences of early misfortune lead to poor health, indicated by ischemic heart disease (IHD) onset. Guided by cumulative inequality theory and biological embedding, this dissertation also examines adult health lifestyles and socioeconomic status (SES) as possible mechanisms linking childhood misfortune to inflammation and IHD in later life. Data come from six waves …

The Role Of Workplace Supervisor Support In Cargivers' Marital Relationships, Kenona H. Southwell Apr 2016

The Role Of Workplace Supervisor Support In Cargivers' Marital Relationships, Kenona H. Southwell

Open Access Dissertations

Family caregivers make important contributions to care recipients and the economy. However, providing care for ill or disabled family members can be challenging, particularly when the role of caregiver is accompanied by additional roles such as employee, spouse, and parent ( Hammer & Neal, 2008). There is some evidence that the demands of caregiving may negatively influence the quality of caregivers’ marriages (Bookwala, 2009). Much of caregiving research, however, is focused on the influence of caregiving and multiple caregiving roles on caregivers’ health (see Pinquart & Sörensen, 2011), but less attention has been paid to other aspects of caregivers’ lives …

The Impact Of Academic Service Learning On Community College Students, Sharon S. Ellerton, Sandy Figueroa, Peter Fiume, Debra Greenwood

Publications and Research

Although research clearly indicates that academic service-learning provides multiple benefits to college students in baccalaureate institutions, there is less known about its impact on community college students; a population who may benefit the most from this pedagogy. Four faculty members from four different community colleges within the City University of New York incorporated service-learning into their classrooms while also maintaining control classes. Quantitative survey data on student civic engagement and college skills were collected and survey responses from those students that did, and did not, participate in service-learning were compared. The data demonstrated meaningful differences between the non-service-learners and service-learning …

Building Relationships And Facilitating Immigrant Community Integration: An Evaluation Of A Cultural Navigator Program, Rebecca L. Thomas, Christine M. Chiarelli-Helminiak, Brunilda Ferraj, Kyle Barrette

Social Work (Graduate) Faculty Publications

Despite the United States’ long history of immigration, large and small communities around the country struggle to integrate newcomers into the social, economic, cultural, and political spheres of society. Utilizing results from the program evaluation of one public library’s Cultural Navigator Program (CNP), the authors illustrate how communities and public institutions can promote integration and relationship building between newly arrived immigrants and long-time residents. Existing social networks, conceptualized in this article as social capital, within receiving communities were leveraged to build capacity among newly arrived immigrants and foster inclusivity and integration at the community level. As a place of intervention, …

Legal Barriers To Age Discrimination In Hiring Complaints, Pnina Alon-Shenker Apr 2016

Legal Barriers To Age Discrimination In Hiring Complaints, Pnina Alon-Shenker

Dalhousie Law Journal

Studies have shown that senior workers endure longer spells of unemployment than their younger counterparts. Age discrimination has been identified as one of the main obstacles to reemployment. This article critically examines how Canadian anti-age discrimination law has responded to the contemporary challenges experienced by senior job seekers. It articulates several difficulties in our existing age discrimination legal framework by analyzing and contrasting social science literature on the present labour market experience of senior job applicants with human rights tribunal and court decisions in hiring complaints. It concludes by sketching a preliminary set of workable proposals for change that derives …

A Good Life In Old Age: Accommodating Elderly Patients' Values And Motivations In The Thai Healthcare System, Jennie Lynn Marinucci Apr 2016

A Good Life In Old Age: Accommodating Elderly Patients' Values And Motivations In The Thai Healthcare System, Jennie Lynn Marinucci

Inquiry Journal 2016

People over age sixty-five are the fastest growing segment of the population in most developed and developing nations and their healthcare problems are placing strains on healthcare systems. An added complication for healthcare providers is that elderly populations carry with them a variety of culturally-specific views surrounding the aging process, so it's hard to standardize care for the elderly globally, and also within individual countries. Addressing cultural difference in gerontology policy and practice therefore requires defining "aging well" or "a good life in old age" in the eyes of the elderly. This study used Thailand's healthcare system as a model …

Neural Activity Reveals Effects Of Aging On Inhibitory Processes During Word Retrieval, Ranjini Mohan Apr 2016

Neural Activity Reveals Effects Of Aging On Inhibitory Processes During Word Retrieval, Ranjini Mohan

Open Access Dissertations

Word retrieval difficulties are one of the most frustrating problems in older adults. Poorer access to phonological (speech sound) representation of the target word has been postulated as the underlying deficit, supported by findings of improvement in word retrieval after phonological priming. But the great variability in naming performance among older adults may reflect cognitive scaffolding or compensatory neurophysiological processes related to maintenance or decline of naming abilities. In order better understand aging effects in the underlying neurophysiological changes associated with phonological retrieval, the present study examined electrophysiological correlates of phonological priming and word retrieval in adults across the lifespan. …

Discussion Of How To Effectively Communicate The Gospel Considering Generations, Cultures, And Paul’S Biblical Example., Rebeca Garnica

Selected Honors Theses

Every communicator of the gospel message should trust that God has called and prepared them to communicate His truth to His people. As a result, communicators should be stewards of God’s gifts and calling by diligently growing and preparing to reach His people. This paper is a discussion created to facilitate communicators of the gospel message with practical tools to be effective communicators. This effective communication is based on three main concepts: generations, cultures, and the Biblical example of the Apostle Paul. The purpose of this thesis is to help all communicators, but primarily those in North America, by examining …
