A Portrait Of Five Undergraduate Students Who Serve As Caregivers While Taking University Courses, Emily Owens, Carley Ulibarri, Blake D. Karlin
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics specific to adults who are caregivers while taking classes from an institution of higher education. We recruited 5 university attending adults through a subject pool and through announcements in various classes through the university setting. Measures on depression, burden, daily activities, and general background were used to assess the experiences of the participants. Self-reports indicated high levels of selfefficacy with regard to the care process, minimal depression, low to moderate levels of burden, and high resiliency among those surveyed. These results indicate while registered as a full time student (12 credits …

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Service learning is a method of instruction that integrates volunteerism, as well as reflection, in the classroom. The purpose of this article is, therefore, to describe the implementation and design of a pre-practicum service learning experience into an Introduction to School Counseling course. The authors describe the empirically grounded design of the service learning experience, as well as the course goals, how it was integrated into the class, and a summary of student experiences.
Development And Validation Of The Palliative Care Knowledge Scale (Packs), Elissa Kozlov
Development And Validation Of The Palliative Care Knowledge Scale (Packs), Elissa Kozlov
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Palliative care is a team-based, specialty service that improves the quality of life for individuals with serious illness and their families. However, current research suggests that this life-improving service is drastically underutilized. Patient knowledge of a healthcare service is theorized to drive utilization. If people do not know what palliative care is, they cannot be expected to seek out or accept a referral for the service. Currently, there are no psychometrically evaluated scales to assess knowledge of palliative care. The purpose of this study is to develop a reliable and valid scale that broadly measures knowledge about palliative care. An …

A Horticultural Therapy Program For The Elderly: Effects On Cognition, Quality Of Life, And Loneliness, Mariah Ruth Baird
A Horticultural Therapy Program For The Elderly: Effects On Cognition, Quality Of Life, And Loneliness, Mariah Ruth Baird
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies suggest there are numerous benefits of horticultural therapy programs. The current study explored the benefits of a horticultural therapy program with elderly populations at two facilities in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Fifteen participants attended a 2-hour session on horticulture techniques once a week for four weeks. Using a pretest to posttest study design, changes in participants’ cognition, quality of life, and loneliness were assessed. The pretest was administered verbally by the researcher before the first session and the posttest, including a series of questions about satisfaction with the program, was administered after the last session. Items on each assessment …
Foot Health Problems – When To Refer To A Podiatrist, M Mcmullan
Foot Health Problems – When To Refer To A Podiatrist, M Mcmullan
School of Health Professions
Although our feet are essential for our balance, weight bearing and mobility, we have a tendency to ignore them and to take them for granted. This is until something goes wrong with them. Problems with our feet will not only affect our general feeling of well-being but, particularly in the elderly, if these problems lead to falls and impaired mobility it can be the difference between being independent or being dependent on others. Foot health problems can be minor (such as dry skin, long and healthy toe nails) which can be cared for by nurses using basic foot care or …

The Opportunity: A 3d Animation About Karma, Mark J. Reisch
The Opportunity: A 3d Animation About Karma, Mark J. Reisch
Theses
The Opportunity is a three dimensional animation that illustrates the idea that by helping others you can inadvertently help yourself. The story is told using an animated sunflower, bees, tulip, and farmer. In a sunflower garden, a sunflower tries to entice a bee to pollinate it, but a tulip (that is not supposed to be in the sunflower garden) attracts all of the bees. The tulip sees the farmer coming to weed out any unwanted plants. Seeing the fear in the tulip’s eyes, the sunflower helps disguise the tulip. The farmer is tricked and the tulip is saved. With the …
An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Core Endurance And Lower Extremity Strength, And The Ability To Recover After Perturbation, Carlie Jones-Hershinow
An Evaluation Of The Relationship Between Core Endurance And Lower Extremity Strength, And The Ability To Recover After Perturbation, Carlie Jones-Hershinow
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
Previous research suggests core strength training improves anticipatory postural adjustments, reducing one’s risk of a fall, and stronger core muscles lead to faster reaction times. This study investigated whether core endurance and lower extremity strength relate to the time one needs to stabilize after being perturbed. An evaluation of ten participants while warming up determined each participant’s transition speed between walking and running. While each participant walked at his/her transition speed, the belts were stopped randomly at an acceleration rate of
2.7 m∙s-2 and ground reaction forces were recorded during balance recovery. Additionally, each participant completed a series of …

Effects Of Aging On The Relationship Between Cognitive Demand And Step Variability During Dual-Task Walking, Leslie M. Decker, Fabien Cignetti, Nathaniel Hunt, Jane F. Potter, Nicholas Stergiou, Stephanie A. Studenski
Journal Articles
A U-shaped relationship between cognitive demand and gait control may exist in dual-task situations, reflecting opposing effects of external focus of attention and attentional resource competition. The purpose of the study was twofold: to examine whether gait control, as evaluated from step-to-step variability, is related to cognitive task difficulty in a U-shaped manner and to determine whether age modifies this relationship. Young and older adults walked on a treadmill without attentional requirement and while performing a dichotic listening task under three attention conditions: non-forced (NF), forced-right (FR), and forced-left (FL). The conditions increased in their attentional demand and requirement for …

Utility Of The Living (Well Through) Intergenerational Fitness And Exercise Program As A County-Delivered Extension Program, Ashleigh J. Sowle, Sarah L. Francis, Jennifer A. Margrett, Warren D. Franke
Journal of Extension
Rural-residing older adults are not participating in regular physical activity. Extension is in an excellent position to fill this programming void through transdisciplinary programming such as the Living (well through) Intergenerational Fitness and Exercise (LIFE) program. Qualitative evaluation was conducted to assess the LIFE program's utility as an Extension-delivered program. Nearly all LIFE program managers were satisfied with the program and were likely to recommend it to others. Best liked program features and attributes were the ready-to-use curriculum, corresponding training, and intergenerational and rural focuses. These results suggest that the LIFE program is viewed as appropriate for delivery by Extension.

Hydration And Vocal Loading On Voice Measures, Anusha Sundarrajan
Hydration And Vocal Loading On Voice Measures, Anusha Sundarrajan
Open Access Dissertations
Vocal loading adversely affects the healthy larynx. The negative effects of vocal loading are thought to be exacerbated in dry environments, noisy environments, using non-habitual speaking patterns, and voice quality. Advancing age is also thought to be a risk factor for the negative effects of loading. To systematically tease out the effects of these factors on the healthy larynx, three different experiments were conducted. In each experiment, healthy participants produced 45-minutes of child-directed speech. In experiment 1, older, healthy adults produced loud child-directed speech, in the presence of background noise, in both low and moderate humidities, and voice was assessed. …
An Evaluation Of Oral Health Training For Long-Term Care Facility Staff And Its Relation To Residents' Dental Plaque Levels, Olivia Christine Barrow
An Evaluation Of Oral Health Training For Long-Term Care Facility Staff And Its Relation To Residents' Dental Plaque Levels, Olivia Christine Barrow
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
The overall goal of this project was to decrease dental plaque scores of residents living at Wild Flower Court (WFC) facility through improved oral health education of staff members. The examiner evaluated WFC nursing staff’s knowledge on providing patients with oral care and denture maintenance both before and after oral care training. The staff knowledge levels were correlated with residents’ plaque levels to determine if a relationship existed. The hypothesis was that WFC residents would have lower dental plaque levels after nursing staff received the oral health and denture maintenance training. Twenty-seven full-time WFC staff members received the oral health …
Trophic Transfer Of A Naturally Occurring Algal Toxin From A Freshwater Lake To Little Brown Bats, Devin Jones
Trophic Transfer Of A Naturally Occurring Algal Toxin From A Freshwater Lake To Little Brown Bats, Devin Jones
Masters Theses
Microcystis aeruginosa is a species of cyanobacteria capable of producing a hepatotoxin called microcystin. As toxic M. aeruginosa overwinters in the sediments of lakes, it is ingested by some mayfly larvae, such as those of Hexagenia spp., and thus
microcystin bioaccumulates in these insects. When Hexagenia emerge from lakes to
reproduce, they provide an abundant, albeit temporary, food source for many terrestrial
organisms such as bats. Little brown bats, Myotis lucifugus, likely feed opportunistically
on aquatic insects. To test if microcystin moves from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems via trophic transfer, we 1) tested bat feces for the presence of …
Population Health Management Risk Assessment Tool Validation: Directing Resource Utilization, Sonya L. Christensen
Population Health Management Risk Assessment Tool Validation: Directing Resource Utilization, Sonya L. Christensen
Doctoral Projects
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 is transforming health care across the nation into a value-based system that emphasizes quality and continuity with reimbursement tied to patient outcomes. The shift in emphasis is best realized through the strategy of Population Health Management, a change from traditional episodic treatment of illness to management of the health needs of populations throughout the continuum of health. The goal of care is to ensure that patients, especially the chronically ill, receive effective attention to their health needs in order to improve outcomes, decrease costs, and provide a positive patient experience. An important component …
Role Of Stress And Social Resources On Biomarkers And Fatigue In Staff Nurses: A Biobehavioral Approach, Mona Cockerham
Role Of Stress And Social Resources On Biomarkers And Fatigue In Staff Nurses: A Biobehavioral Approach, Mona Cockerham
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Purpose
Consecutive 12-hr workdays can contribute to increased stress and fatigue and negative biological responses in nurses, potentially compromising quality of patient care and safety. The primary purpose of this study was to assess changes in stress, fatigue, and biological responses (salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase) over three consecutive 12-hr workdays in acute care nurses and how stress and social resources function in predicting fatigue and biological responses.
Methods
In a prospective study, 81 acute care nurses completed questionnaires and provided saliva samples four times: pre-shifts and post-shifts of day 1 and day 3.
Results
Although stress and biological responses did …

An Evaluation Of The Acceptability And Effects Of A Computer-Delivered Values-Based Behavioral Activation Treatment For Depression Among Older Adults, Kellie Reynolds
An Evaluation Of The Acceptability And Effects Of A Computer-Delivered Values-Based Behavioral Activation Treatment For Depression Among Older Adults, Kellie Reynolds
Dissertations
Depression is a common psychological disorder among older adults and is associated with serious secondary effects to health and social well-being. Behavioral activation has been found to be an efficacious treatment for depression. However, there is limited research on the treatment effects of behavioral activation with older adults. In general, older adults under-utilize mental health treatments. Computer-delivered treatments have been developed to address access and under-utilization. The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate the acceptability and effects of a computer-delivered values-based behavioral activation treatment for depression in older adults. This study consisted of two phases. Phase I consisted of …
Influences On Self-Care In Women With Heart Failure: A Pilot Study, Joy Corcione
Influences On Self-Care In Women With Heart Failure: A Pilot Study, Joy Corcione
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: Heart Failure self-care becomes exceedingly difficult to perform as the disease progresses; therefore social support becomes important in facilitating heart failure self-care. Woman with heart failure represent a significant and growing vulnerable population. Women tend to have lower self-confidence in providing self-care, experience greater negative emotions, decreased social support, experience more adverse psychosocial factors affecting self-care and experience greater psychosocial adversity than do men. Self-care is vital in managing heart failure and social support greatly facilitates self-care behaviors.
Purpose: The purpose of this pilot study was to gain a deeper understanding about the sources of perceived social support and …
