Global, Regional, And National Comparative Risk Assessment Of 79 Behavioural, Environmental And Occupational, And Metabolic Risks Or Clusters Of Risks, 1990–2015: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2015, Gbd 2015 Risk Factors Collaborators

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 provides an up-to-date synthesis of the evidence for risk factor exposure and the attributable burden of disease. By providing national and subnational assessments spanning the past 25 years, this study can inform debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. METHODS: We used the comparative risk assessment framework developed for previous iterations of the Global Burden of Disease Study to estimate attributable deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and trends in exposure by age group, sex, year, and geography for 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or …

Global, Regional, And National Levels Of Maternal Mortality, 1990–2015: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2015, Gbd 2015 Maternal Mortality Collaborators

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: In transitioning from the Millennium Development Goal to the Sustainable Development Goal era, it is imperative to comprehensively assess progress toward reducing maternal mortality to identify areas of success, remaining challenges, and frame policy discussions. We aimed to quantify maternal mortality throughout the world by underlying cause and age from 1990 to 2015. METHODS: We estimated maternal mortality at the global, regional, and national levels from 1990 to 2015 for ages 10-54 years by systematically compiling and processing all available data sources from 186 of 195 countries and territories, 11 of which were analysed at the subnational level. We …

Global, Regional, And National Incidence, Prevalence, And Years Lived With Disability For 310 Diseases And Injuries, 1990–2015: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2015, Gbd 2015 Disease And Injury Incidence And Prevalence Collaborators

Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for diseases and injuries at the global, regional, and national scale over the period of 1990 to 2015. METHODS: We estimated incidence and prevalence by age, sex, cause, year, and geography with …

Women’S Experiences With Prenatal Care: A Mixed-Methods Study Exploring The Influence Of The Social Determinants Of Health, Karen A. D'Angelo, Janelle K. Bryan, Brenda Kurz

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Background & Purpose: Racial and ethnic disparities pervade birth outcomes in the United States and the state of Connecticut. While Connecticut’s infant mortality rate is less than the national average, rates for the state’s Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino communities exceed it. This study explored how prenatal care in Connecticut may be enhanced to address these disparities.

Methods: In spring 2013, seven focus groups and two semi-structured interviews were conducted (n=47). Participants also self-administered brief surveys. Recruited by local service providers, participants were 18 or older, pregnant and/or in the first year post-partum at the time. Most self-identified as …

Has The Elite Foundation Agenda Spread Beyond The Gates? An Organizational Network Analysis Of Nonmajor Philanthropic Giving In K-12 Education, Joseph J. Ferrare, Katherine Reynolds

Educational Policy Studies and Evaluation Faculty Publications

Previous research focusing on major philanthropic foundations suggests that these actors have collectively converged around a set of jurisdictional challengers promoting market-based education reforms. Using correspondence analysis, network analysis, and geographic information science, this article empirically tests whether this convergence has permeated to less prominent foundations and their grantees, or if these foundations are pursuing alternative organizational strategies to shape K–12 outcomes. The analysis draws from a sample of 15 nonmajor foundations and their 1,069 grantees serving some aspect of K–12 education in 2010. We find that nonmajor foundations have adopted some elements of major foundations’ organizational strategies to influence …

The Morphology And Development Of Kalahroud Cave, Iran, Shirin Bahadorinia, Sayed Hassan Hejazi, Alireza Nadimi, Derek C. Ford, Karine Wainer

International Journal of Speleology

Kalahroud Cave is located in central Iran, ~50 km north of Isfahan. The landscape is a typical mountain desert morphology of cuestas dissected by ravines and gorges created during rare surface run-off events; crest lines are ~2800 m asl and lowlands at ~2100 m asl. Kalahroud Cave (4500 m of mapped passages, ~60 m deep) is entered through breakdown in the eastern wall of a gorge. The host rock is a Cretaceous limestone and mudstone formation 60 m in thickness, underlain by sandstones and conglomerates and overlain by weakly permeable calcareous marl strata, all dipping 15-20o. Below the …

A Complex Origin For The Kelso Dunes, Mojave National Preserve, California, Usa: A Case Study Using A Simple Geochemical Method With Global Applications, Daniel R. Muhs, Nicholas Lancaster, Gary L. Skipp

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Kelso Dune field in southern California is intriguing because although it is of limited areal extent (~100 km2), it has a wide variety of dune forms and contains many active dunes (~40 km2), which is unusual in the Mojave Desert. Studies over the past eight decades have concluded that the dunes are derived primarily from a single source, Mojave River alluvium, under a dominant, westerly-to-northwesterly wind regime. The majority of these studies did not, however, present data to support the Mojave River as the only source. We conducted mineralogical and geochemical studies ofmost of the 14 geomorphically defined dune groups …

Empirical Analysis And The Fate Of Capital Punishment, John J. Donohue Oct 2016

Empirical Analysis And The Fate Of Capital Punishment, John J. Donohue

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

In his dissenting opinion in Glossip v. Gross, Justice Breyer attempted to give content to the Supreme Court’s prior command in Atkins v. Virginia that unless the imposition of the death penalty “measurably contributes to one or both of [the legitimate penological goals of deterrence and retribution], it ‘is nothing more than the purposeless and needless imposition of pain and suffering,’ and hence an unconstitutional punishment.” Justice Breyer’s opinion illuminates the central role that empirical studies have played in death penalty litigation since Furman v. Georgia on issues ranging from the lack of deterrence associated with the death …

The Geographic Distribution Of Us Executions, Frank R. Baumgartner, Woody Gram, Kaneesha R. Johnson, Arvind Krishnamurthy, Colin P. Wilson

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

We review statistical patterns of the geographic distribution of US executions, compare them to homicides, and demonstrate extremely high degrees of concentration of executions in the modern period compared to previous historical periods. We further show that this unprecedented level of concentration has been increasing over the past 20 years. We demonstrate that it is virtually uncorrelated with factors related to homicides. Finally, we show that it corresponds to a statistical distribution associated with “self-reinforcing” processes: a power-law or exponential distribution.

These findings stand whether we look at individual counties within death-penalty states, across the 50 states of the United …

Electronic Health Records And Population Health Research, Joan A. Casey, Brian S. Schwartz, Walter F. Stewart, Nancy E. Adler Oct 2016

Electronic Health Records And Population Health Research, Joan A. Casey, Brian S. Schwartz, Walter F. Stewart, Nancy E. Adler

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) by clinical practices and hospitals in the US has increased substantially since 2009, and offers opportunities for population health researchers to access rich structured and unstructured clinical data on large, diverse, and geographically distributed populations. However, because EHRs are intended for clinical and administrative use, the data must be curated for effective use in research. We describe EHRs, examine their use in population health research, and compare the strengths and limitations of these applications to traditional epidemiologic methods.

To date, EHR data have primarily been used to validate prior findings, to study specific diseases …

Integrating Environmental Justice Into Public Health: Approaches For Understanding Cumulative Impacts, Gina Solomon, John Faust, Rachel Morello-Frosch, Lauren Zeise Oct 2016

Integrating Environmental Justice Into Public Health: Approaches For Understanding Cumulative Impacts, Gina Solomon, John Faust, Rachel Morello-Frosch, Lauren Zeise

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Communities located near multiple sources of pollution, including current and former industrial sites, major roadways, and agricultural operations, are often predominantly low-income, with a large percentage of minorities and non-English speakers. These communities face additional challenges that can affect the health of their residents, including limited access to health care, a shortage of grocery stores, poor housing quality, and a lack of parks and open spaces. Research is now showing that environmental exposures can interact with social stressors, thereby worsening health outcomes. Age, nutrition, genetic characteristics, and preexisting health conditions also increase the risk of adverse health effects from exposure …

The Double Disparity Facing Rural Local Health Departments: A Short Report, Kate E. Beatty, Jenine K. Harris, Jp Leider, Britta Anderson, Michael Meit Oct 2016

The Double Disparity Facing Rural Local Health Departments: A Short Report, Kate E. Beatty, Jenine K. Harris, Jp Leider, Britta Anderson, Michael Meit

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Rural residents in the U.S. face significant health challenges, including higher rates of risky health behaviors and worse health outcomes than many other groups. Rural communities are also typically served by local health departments (LHDs) that have fewer human and financial resources than their suburban and urban peers. As a result of history and need, rural LHDs are more likely than urban LHDs to provide direct health services, which may result in limited resources for population-based activities. This review examines the double disparity facing rural LHDs and their constituents: pervasively poorer health behaviors and outcomes and a historical lack of …

The Isolation Factor, Kevin Oshnock Oct 2016

The Isolation Factor, Kevin Oshnock

ASA Annual Conference

In Appalachian North Carolina, there has been much debate over sympathies towards the Union or the Confederacy during the Civil War. Many modern historians argue that Western North Carolina was strongly pro Confederate and that most pockets of Unionism were either near the Tennessee border or just random. However, the situation is much more complicated than that. Based on enlistment data of Union and Confederate soldiers in Watauga and Buncombe counties, the elevation one lived at was a much better predictor of Unionism than their proximity to the Tennessee border. Folks living at higher elevations were typically more isolated, poorer, …

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long Oct 2016

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long

ASA Annual Conference

Old-time Appalachian tune titles and song lyrics frequently reference food and drink. These include specific dishes (for example, cornbread, biscuits, gravy, moonshine), ingredients (corn, cabbage, squirrels, chickens, sack of meal), and cooking implements (skillet, frying pan), as well as ways of obtaining food (hunting, farming, hoeing corn) and cooking it (frying, boiling). These references give descriptions of typical foods of the region, but they also offer an homogenized impression of what constitutes Appalachian foodways. While there are basic ingredients common throughout the area, there is a great deal of diversity in Appalachian foodways that reflects the diverse ethnicities, social classes, …

Provenance Analysis Of Granite Cobbles In The Tiskilwa Till Using U -Pb Geochronology, Paul Antone Meister Oct 2016

Provenance Analysis Of Granite Cobbles In The Tiskilwa Till Using U -Pb Geochronology, Paul Antone Meister

Theses and Dissertations

U-Pb isotopic ages were determined for zircons extracted from granitic and related rocks in the Tiskilwa till to determine their origin. Crystalline cobbles (n = 750) were collected at localities from each of the four of the sub-lobes of the terminal Wisconsin moraines. Two sites were chosen from the Decatur, Peoria, and Princeton sub-lobes with one sample taken from the Harvard sub-lobe. Each sample was then individually processed, the zircons handpicked (n = 301), and geochronology conducted using LA-MC-ICPMS at the University of Arizona Laserchron Center. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) statistical analysis show that all samples have identical zircon age spectra …

Takeover On The Tallgrass Prairie: How Lespedeza Cuneata Establishes Dominance, Morgan Rae Walder Oct 2016

Takeover On The Tallgrass Prairie: How Lespedeza Cuneata Establishes Dominance, Morgan Rae Walder

Theses and Dissertations

Invasion ecology aims to study mechanisms by which invasive species are able to enter, establish, and spread within an ecosystem. This study analyzed Darwin’s naturalization and the biotic resistance hypotheses as the most likely explanations for invasion by an exotic legume, Lespedeza cuneata, into a tallgrass prairie. Darwin’s naturalization hypothesis posits that exotic species are less able to establish in communities that have related species, because similarity in morphology and function promotes intense competition for resources. The biotic resistance hypothesis states that competitors, herbivores, and pathogens already present in the community limit the colonization, naturalization, and persistence of invaders, therefore …
