Assessing The Impact Of Climate Change On Farmland Values In Nepal: A Ricardian Approach, Samrat Bikram Kunwar Oct 2016

Assessing The Impact Of Climate Change On Farmland Values In Nepal: A Ricardian Approach, Samrat Bikram Kunwar

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper presents an application of Ricardian approach to assess the impact of climate change on farmland values in Nepal. The Ricardian approach is estimated using a panel fixed effects model. The results are tested with two models that account for spatial effects: a spatial lag model and a spatial error model. The findings reveal that Nepalese farmlands are sensitive to climate change. This result is consistent in both the spatial and non-spatial analysis. The inclusion of the spatial effects, however, produced significantly more conservative estimates of climate change impacts. Average temperature in the spring and summer season and the …

Hybrid Taguchi-Objective Function Optimization Approach For Automatic Cave Bird Detection From Terrestrial Laser Scanning Intensity Image, Mohammed O. Idrees, Biswajeet Pradhan Oct 2016

Hybrid Taguchi-Objective Function Optimization Approach For Automatic Cave Bird Detection From Terrestrial Laser Scanning Intensity Image, Mohammed O. Idrees, Biswajeet Pradhan

International Journal of Speleology

This paper proposes an optimized Taguchi-objective function segmentation-based image analysis to detect bird nests in a cave from high resolution terrestrial laser scanning intensity images. First, the Taguchi orthogonal array was used to design 25 experiments with three segmentation parameters: scale, shape, and compactness, each having five variable factor levels. Then, a plateau objective function was computed for each experiment using their respective level combinations. A merger of the factor level combination in the orthogonal array and the computed plateau objective function values was used to generate main effects and interaction plots for signal-to-noise ratios, which provided a measure of …

Foreign Direct Investment (Fdi) Types And Theories: The Significance Of Human Capital, Nazmi Zeqiri, Hykmete Bajrami Oct 2016

Foreign Direct Investment (Fdi) Types And Theories: The Significance Of Human Capital, Nazmi Zeqiri, Hykmete Bajrami

UBT International Conference

One of the economic problems of undeveloped countries, and Kosovo, is that they do not have enough national savings to finance their investments. They are in constant need of foreign capital in forms of both direct and indirect investments, but not every country is able to attract the right mode of FDI, nor does every investor risks his investments without studying the conditions in the host country. The practice of FDI attraction generally incorporates numerous fiscal and monetary incentives. However, one should note that FDI attraction should be accompanied by development and an increase in the level of human capital, …

The Potential Of Forest Biomass Inversion Based On Vegetation Indices Using Multi-Angle Chris/Proba Data, Qiang Wang, Yong Pang, Zengyuan Li, Guoqing Sun, Erxue Chen, Wenge Ni-Meister

Publications and Research

Multi-angle remote sensing can either be regarded as an added source of uncertainty for variable retrieval, or as a source of additional information, which enhances variable retrieval compared to traditional single-angle observation. However, the magnitude of these angular and band effects for forest structure parameters is difficult to quantify. We used the Discrete Anisotropic Radiative Transfer (DART) model and the Zelig model to simulate the forest canopy Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Factor (BRDF) in order to build a look-up table, and eight vegetation indices were used to assess the relationship between BRDF and forest biomass in order to find the sensitive …

How Mature Capitalism Turns Pollution Into Diamonds: Malagnogenesis And The Reverse-Engineering Of Harm Into Risk, Kevin P. Martyn Oct 2016

How Mature Capitalism Turns Pollution Into Diamonds: Malagnogenesis And The Reverse-Engineering Of Harm Into Risk, Kevin P. Martyn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, there has been a great deal of debate about the pervasiveness and persistence of neoliberal thinking. In the context of the post-2008 ‘great recession’ the resilience of neoliberalism is particularly confounding. To begin to unravel the ways in which neoliberalism is situated relative to risk, this study identifies an increasingly important neoliberal knowledge practice: malagnogenesis. Malagnogenesis is proposed herein as the production of ignorance that normalizes harm for and amongst marginalized populations. To shed light on the phenomena of malagnogenesis, this study investigated the history of leaded gasoline in the U.S. To that end, I …

The Challenges That International Students Face When Integrating Into Higher Education In The United States, Raja Almurideef Oct 2016

The Challenges That International Students Face When Integrating Into Higher Education In The United States, Raja Almurideef

Theses and Dissertations

For the last two years, the number of international students aspiring to obtain a qualification in U.S. universities has been exponentially growing by 8% (IIE, 2014). The purpose of this study was to discuss the challenges faced by international students in the United States. Although international students benefit universities, they encounter adjustment difficulties that differ from those of domestic students, such as culture shock, homesickness, loss of social support, discrimination, language barriers, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and academic adjustments. This quantitative study was conducted with undergraduate international students from different countries enrolled at Rowan University during the spring semester of 2016. …

Opportunities For Energy-Water Nexus Management In The Middle East & North Africa, Amro M. Farid, William N. Lubega, William W. Hickman Oct 2016

Opportunities For Energy-Water Nexus Management In The Middle East & North Africa, Amro M. Farid, William N. Lubega, William W. Hickman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Electric power is required to produce, treat, distribute, and recycle water while water is required to generate and consume electricity. Naturally, this energy-water nexus is most evident in multi-utilities that provide electricity and water but still exists when the nexus has distinct organizations as owners and operators. Therefore, the sustainability question that arises from energy-water trade-offs and synergies is very much tied to the potential for economies of scope. Furthermore, in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, multi-utilities are not only common, but also the nexus is particularly exacerbated by the high energy intensity of the water supply …

Quantifying The Effects Of Expert Selection And Elicitation Design On Experts’ Confidence In Their Judgments About Future Energy Technologies, Gregory F. Nemet, Laura Diaz Anadon, Elena Verdolini Oct 2016

Quantifying The Effects Of Expert Selection And Elicitation Design On Experts’ Confidence In Their Judgments About Future Energy Technologies, Gregory F. Nemet, Laura Diaz Anadon, Elena Verdolini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Expert elicitations are frequently used to characterize future technology outcomes. However their usefulness is limited, in part because: estimates across studies are not easily comparable; choices in survey design and expert selection may bias results; and over-confidence is a persistent problem. We provide quantitative evidence of how these choices affect experts’ estimates of the costs of future energy technologies. We harmonize data from 19 elicitations, involving 215 experts, on the 2030 costs of 5 energy technologies: nuclear, biofuels, bioelectricity, solar, and carbon capture. We control for expert characteristics, survey design, and public R&D investment levels on which the elicited values …

CUMU (Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities), 2016 Conference, Poster Presentations:

Racial divide in Omaha, NE is apparent—African Americans in the north, Latinos in the south, and Whites in the west, which is visually depicted in Cable’s racial dot map (2013). Beyond racial segregation, according to city data in 2013, 31% of the population are below the poverty level in North Omaha and 22.5% in South Omaha. These two regions result in a 30% poverty rate compared to 18% for all of Omaha. This clearly indicates that not only is the poverty rate higher for North and South regions …

A Brave New Borderless World: Standardization Would End Decades Of Inconsistency In Determining Proper Personal Jurisdiction In Cyberspace Cases, Jonathan Spencer Barnard Oct 2016

A Brave New Borderless World: Standardization Would End Decades Of Inconsistency In Determining Proper Personal Jurisdiction In Cyberspace Cases, Jonathan Spencer Barnard

Seattle University Law Review

While various courts and numerous legal professionals have addressed the issue of inconsistent application of personal jurisdiction in cyberspace cases, the Supreme Court has yet to discuss the impact that technology might have on the analysis of personal jurisdiction; thus, many details remain unresolved. This Note examines the varying jurisdictional splits between the lower district courts, the courts of appeals, and the federal circuit court of appeals in determining the proper approach to take when dealing with Internet jurisdiction. After an examination of several key cases, this Note will explain why the Supreme Court, or the Legislature, should adopt an …

The Year-Long Adventures Of The Blue Shoes & Their Friends, Michael R. Hill

Zea E-Books Collection

While participating in a Teacher Workshop organized by Georgina Valverde at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013, Michael Hill began a one-year artistic and pedagogical odyssey making original images (always featuring some aspect of one or more athletic shoes) and posting them daily to a visual blog he created to help kick-start writing projects among the many student athletes he tutored at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He started the year self-identifying as “scholar/teacher,” but at year’s end Michael looked in the mirror and said, OK, still “scholar/ teacher,” but also “artist.” Here are the workshop organizer’s foreword, the scholar’s …

Condition Of Larval Spanish Mackerel Scomberomorus Maculatus In Relation To The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, John Timothy Ransom, J.E. Filbrun, Frank J. Hernandez Jr.

Faculty Publications

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWHOS) coincided with the pelagic larval stages of many valued commercial and recreational fishes in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Larval fish survival and eventual recruitment into adult populations may have been impacted directly through toxicity or indirectly through changes in the planktonic food web caused by the release of oil and chemical dispersants during the DWHOS event. Using samples from a long-term ichthyoplankton survey off the coast of Alabama, USA, in a region impacted by the DWHOS, the abundance and condition of larval Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus maculatus were compared during summer months in years …
