Effects Of Temperature On Development And Voltinism Of Chaetodactylus Krombeini (Acari: Chaetodactylidae): Implications For Climate Change Impacts, Jeong Joon Ahn, Youngsoo Son, Yaqian He, Eungul Lee, Yong-Lak Park

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Temperature plays an important role in the growth and development of arthropods, and thus the current trend of climate change will alter their biology and species distribution. We used Chaetodactylus krombeini (Acari: Chaetodactylidae), a cleptoparasitic mite associated with Osmia bees (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), as a model organism to investigate how temperature affects the development and voltinism of C. krombeini in the eastern United States. The effects of temperature on the stage-specific development of C. krombeini were determined at seven constant temperatures (16.1, 20.2, 24.1, 27.5, 30.0, 32.4 and 37.8°C). Parameters for stage-specific development, such as threshold temperatures and thermal constant, were …

The allotetraploid species Brassica napus L. is a global crop of major economic importance, providing canola oil (seed) and vegetables for human consumption and fodder and meal for livestock feed. Characterizing the genetic diversity present in the extant germplasm pool of B. napus is fundamental to better conserve, manage and utilize the genetic resources of this species. We used sequence-based genotyping to identify and genotype 30,881 SNPs in a diversity panel of 782 B. napus accessions, representing samples of winter and spring growth habits originating from 33 countries across Europe, Asia, and America. We detected strong population structure broadly concordant …

United States V. Gooding: The Imperfect Indictment That Created The Perfect Defense For The Illegal Slave Trade, Fernando D. Kirkman

Legal History Publications

In United States v. Gooding, the Supreme Court quashed an indictment against John Gooding for engaging in international slave trading, a violation of the Slave Trade Act of 1818. The Slave Trade Act of 1818 modified the penalties for engaging the in slave trading, and switched the burden of proof to the defendant, to disprove the presumption that the defendant had engaged in the slave trade. This article looks at how United States v. Gooding stands as a step backwards toward condoning and legitimizing the international slave trade. This paper also examines the moral relativism expressed in the United States’ …

Between Georgia And Crimea: The Social Dimensions Of War For The Russian Military, Mari Elisa Dugas Jan 2016

Between Georgia And Crimea: The Social Dimensions Of War For The Russian Military, Mari Elisa Dugas

Honors Thesis Collection

What factors are vital to the success of military operations? In the case of the contemporary Russian military, most scholars have attributed success in both Georgia (2008) and Crimea (2014) to a reformed and technologically improved military. Despite a widely accepted “victory” in Georgia, Russia’s military performed disastrously, which catalyzed a series of reforms and modernization projects within the military. Many scholars have traced these reforms to the success of Russia’s operations in Crimea in 2014, citing their superior technology and organizational learning. My thesis addresses the reality of Russia’s military operation in Crimea, which I argue was dependent more …

A Continual Evolution: The Reform Of France’S “Politique De La Ville” As An Urban Peace-Building Mechanism In The Suburbs Of Paris, Pauline Day

Honors Thesis Collection

For four months, the parallel between Chicago and Paris, two seemingly incomparable cities, gnawed at me while I travelled to and from my internship at the city hall of Pantin, a neighboring suburb of Paris. I was placed in the Department of Politique de la Ville, a national funding mechanism dedicated to low-income neighborhoods in France during its call to reform. At its best, the mechanism is quite dynamic, increasing the resources and mutual trust between residents and government; at its worst, it is highly ineffective, financially wasteful, and ignorant of the specific needs of communities. While most research students …

Echoes, Marissa Klee-Peregon Jan 2016

Echoes, Marissa Klee-Peregon

Honors Thesis Collection

In a corner of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, just off the main medieval art gallery, there is a small room ending in an apse with a 12th century Catalonian fresco. In a 12th century church in Catalonia, Spain, there is an apse that once held the fresco now in the MFA. Now, rather than paint and plaster or bare walls, the church’s apse holds a photographic reproduction of the fresco. The gallery recalls the church with its empty apse, and the church recalls the gallery in the MFA.

Echoes recalls both.

The works in Echoes, images drawn …

From City Of The Oppressed To City Of The Free: Tracing The Progress Of Decolonization In African Cities, Oluwapelumi Botti

Honors Thesis Collection

Several African historians have famously recognized the challenges created by colonialism in colonial cities. Colonial rule has been argued to have brought modernization and urbanization to Africans. On the other hand, African colonial cities were often sites of terror, inequality and racial segregation where those colonized were made disenfranchised. Thus, what became of these former colonial African cities that were designed to promote European superiority? How did African leaders and urban planners overcome the challenges inherited from colonialism? Finally, how did the ideologies of African postcolonial leaders influence urban plans? Through the case studies of Kenya’s capital Nairobi, Tanzania’s capital …

The Ethics Of Historic Preservation, Erich Hatala Matthes Jan 2016

The Ethics Of Historic Preservation, Erich Hatala Matthes

Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article draws together research from various sub-disciplines of philosophy to offer an overview of recent philosophical work on the ethics of historic preservation. I discuss how philosophers writing about art, culture, and the environment have appealed to historical significance in crafting arguments about the preservation of objects, practices, and places. By demonstrating how it relates to core themes in moral and political philosophy, I argue that historic preservation is essentially concerned with ethical issues.

Where we live matters for our health. The social, economic, and physical features of neighborhoods can play a powerful role in health and longevity. Neighborhood concentration of poverty and poor health have been shown to be linked. Residing in low-income neighborhoods has been associated with diet related chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.

Factors Influencing And Risk Associated With The Use Of Drones By Specialty Construction Companies In The United States Of America, Glenn Graham

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) are being used by many industries through special use permits. Currently, the real estate industry leads in use of aerial vehicles for aerial views of property while agriculture follows at second being utilized to determine chemical and moisture content allowing the owners to treat the crops with the exact amount of chemical or water saving on cost of excessive treatment and possible crop loss. Drone use increased the visibility of real estate and also the profit margin of the agricultural business as well as the quality of the product being produced. Other industries are also using …

The Impact Of Perceived Subgroup Formation On Transactive Memory Systems And Performance In Distributed Teams, Yide Shen, M. J. Gallivan, X. Tang

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

With distributed teams becoming increasingly common in organizations, improving their performance is a critical challenge for both practitioners and researchers. This research examines how group members' perception of subgroup formation affects team performance in fully distributed teams. The authors propose that individual members' perception about the presence of subgroups within the team has a negative effect on team performance, which manifests itself through decreases in a team's transactive memory system (TMS). Using data from 154 members of 41 fully distributed teams (where no group members were colocated), the authors found that members' perceptions of the existence of subgroups impair the …

Dislodgement Force And Shell Morphology Vary According To Wave Exposure In A Tropical Gastropod (Cittarium Pica), Graham E. Forrester, Reuben J.A. Macfarlan, Allison J. Holevoet, Sarah Merolla Jan 2016

Dislodgement Force And Shell Morphology Vary According To Wave Exposure In A Tropical Gastropod (Cittarium Pica), Graham E. Forrester, Reuben J.A. Macfarlan, Allison J. Holevoet, Sarah Merolla

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Wave exposure has strong influences on population density, morphology and behaviour of intertidal species in temperate zones, but little is known about how intertidal organisms in tropical regions respond to gradients in wave exposure. We tested whether dislodgement force and shell shape of a tropical gastropod, Cittarium pica, differs among shores that vary in wave exposure. After adjusting for body size, we found that C. pica from exposed shores required greater dislodgement force to remove them from the shore, had slightly larger opercula (the closure to the shell aperture), and were slightly squatter in shape (reduced in shell height …
