Intertwined Demons: The Relationship Between Gate Guardians And The Demon Ammit In Nineteenth Dynasty Book Of The Dead As Expressed Through Synecdoche, Jessica Victoria Johnson Apr 2016

Intertwined Demons: The Relationship Between Gate Guardians And The Demon Ammit In Nineteenth Dynasty Book Of The Dead As Expressed Through Synecdoche, Jessica Victoria Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis examines the synecdochical relationship between the group of Gate Guardian demons from the Book of the Dead Spells 144-147, and the demon Ammit, from Spell 125. The epithets of the Gate Guardians describe specific characteristics, while the personification of Ammit as the "second death" explicates hers. Supporting text explains the demons' mythological functions of protecting liminal spaces, thus preventing chaos from progressing through the underworld. Animal iconography is discussed also because characteristics of the animals employed in the depictions of the Gate Guardians mimic those of Ammit. Lastly, the overall concept of a tumultuous journey that the deceased …

Slavery: The Main Ingredient To An Ancient Greek Polis' Military Dominance, Steven T. Tran Apr 2016

Slavery: The Main Ingredient To An Ancient Greek Polis' Military Dominance, Steven T. Tran

Young Historians Conference

Spartan and Athens' victories against the Persians and their eventual military dominance cannot be attributed to military strategy or government alone. The social acceptance of slavery provided the foundation for Greek poleis' social and economic spheres, leading to the development of slave deployment during the Persian Wars and Peloponnesian War. An in-depth analysis of Classical Greece slavery shows that its prevalence is much greater than what previous historians have thought, and more notably, that it was one of the most massive slave usage in history, allowing for the development of a dominating western world.

Crisis In Education -- The Effect Of The Cold War On The American Education System, Spencer C.J. Gregg

Young Historians Conference

The Cold War era had a dramatic impact on the American educational system. Striving to demonstrate superiority over Soviet counterparts, new curriculum were developed to prepare the American youth intellectually, emotionally, and technologically to position the U.S. as a world power. With the American public polarized whether schools were a venue for the dissemination of national ideologies or institutions for the development of critical thinking; world events including nuclear warfare, space exploration, and military preparedness served as catalysts for the development of future citizens that would effectively contribute to the intellectual and technological growth of the nation.

The Power Of The Tower: Contesting History At Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument, Anna Marie Kramer Apr 2016

The Power Of The Tower: Contesting History At Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument, Anna Marie Kramer

2016 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument, a spectacular rock formation in northeastern Wyoming, has a multiplicity of meanings, not all of which were fully acknowledged until the 1990s. It is widely known as a geologic wonder, the first national monument, a marker of local and pioneer heritage, and a premier rock climbing area. In the 1980s and ‘90s, however, the National Park Service began to acknowledge that the Tower also holds cultural and historical meaning for the Northern Plains tribes, dating back long before the colonization of the American West. Some of the tribes expressed to the Park Service that they …

Beyond The Millennium Development Goals: An Evaluation Of The War On Hiv / Aids In Kenya, Robert G. Nyaga

Theses and Dissertations

HIV/AIDS remains a threat to Kenya and other developing nations. This thesis aimed at assessing the HIV/AIDS situation in Kenya by examining the knowledge of Kenyans towards infection and spread HIV/AIDS, attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS, involvement of community opinion leaders in the HIV/AIDS campaigns, sharing of HIV/AIDS information, and government efforts to control HIV/AIDS. A sample of Kenyans (N= 103) was surveyed and asked to respond to several scales assessing each of the above items. Quantitative and qualitative methods reveal the knowledge and attitudes portrayed by Kenyans and show that, although much has been achieved, there is need …

Determination Of Phosphorus In Natural Waters: A Historical Review., Paul Worsfold, Ian Mckelvie, Phil Monbet Apr 2016

Determination Of Phosphorus In Natural Waters: A Historical Review., Paul Worsfold, Ian Mckelvie, Phil Monbet

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The aim of this paper is to introduce a virtual special issue that reviews the development of analytical approaches to the determination of phosphorus species in natural waters. The focus is on sampling and sample treatment, analytical methods and quality assurance of the data. The export of phosphorus from anthropogenic activities (from diffuse and point sources) can result in increased primary production and eutrophication, and potentially the seasonal development of toxic algal blooms, which can significantly impact on water quality. Therefore the quantification of phosphorus species in natural waters provides important baseline data for studying aquatic phosphorus biogeochemistry, assessing ecosystem …

"Torn From Their Mother's Breasts": The Battle For Impoverished Souls In Ireland, 1853-1885, Kristin V. Brig Apr 2016

"Torn From Their Mother's Breasts": The Battle For Impoverished Souls In Ireland, 1853-1885, Kristin V. Brig

Madison Historical Review

A world history analysis, this paper examines the struggle between Protestant governmental and Catholic private philanthropy in mid-nineteenth-century Ireland, exploring how each side waged a war of political and religious misunderstanding in an effort to gain control over the Catholic Irish poor. Ireland’s philanthropic scene in this period became a battleground on which the British government fought for political control and Catholics for religious control; however, neither group understood what the other fought for, waging a war of cross-purposes. Through an examination of this battle for control, this paper depicts the emergence of modern Irish welfare from the famine era …

Beyond The Façade: Haussmannization In Paris As A Transformation Of Society, Amy Rideout Apr 2016

Beyond The Façade: Haussmannization In Paris As A Transformation Of Society, Amy Rideout

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

The Paris that tourists know and love today conceals under its romantic, ordered, urban environment a façade of division and social change. Following Napoleon II’s commissioning of an urban overhaul, Haussmannization in the nineteenth century addressed problems of circulation and disorder, but also created problems of separation and division. Annexing several neighborhoods into a fortified new boundary, and subsequently removing the poor, working class to the outskirts, helped make this division permanent. While modern concepts and building materials significantly improved the inner city, they also forced a reduction in housing supply coupled with increased housing prices. Slums were cleared, in …

Using Gis To Assist In Social Impact Assessments At Military Installations, Darcy Ayers Apr 2016

Using Gis To Assist In Social Impact Assessments At Military Installations, Darcy Ayers

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

Social Impact Assessments, evolving from NEPA Environmental Impact Assessments, can be used to address societal impacts resulting from large-scale human activities. GIS is a new tool that can be used to assess the spatial distribution of social impacts. This study used GIS and a Dust Impact Index model to identify the populations at risk to dust exposure from a military installation in Hawaii (Pohakuloa Training Area). This analysis is needed due to an Army Stryker brigade transformation that requires more vehicle training, which is resulting in an increase of dust generation. Factors used to determine the Dust Impact Index were …

The Florida Current: Mean Jet Structure, Meandering, And Velocity Fluctuations Observed With Hf Radar, Matthew R. Archer

Open Access Dissertations

High-resolution ocean surface current velocity measurements from high frequency (HF) radar are used to map the Florida Current jet structure, and quantify its fluctuations, in more detail than has previously been possible. Whereas earlier HF radar studies in the Straits of Florida focused on individual events, this research takes the next step by using a 2 year timeseries to quantify and characterize the mean horizontal jet profile, its meandering and structural variability, and the space-time structure of the velocity fluctuations.

Blood, Sweat, And Social Control: A Comparative Study Of Virginian And Jamaican Slavery, 1740-1820, Paul T. Knaak Apr 2016

Blood, Sweat, And Social Control: A Comparative Study Of Virginian And Jamaican Slavery, 1740-1820, Paul T. Knaak

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

This paper is a comparative study examining how slavery impacted Virginian and Jamaican society in the period 1740-1820. In both regions, slavery provided an important source of labor to facilitate intensive agriculture. However, differing geographic, demographic, and economic forces in Virginia and Jamaica served to forge two distinctly different slave societies. To explore how slavery impacted society in the two regions, and the tools slave-owners used to maintain control, the diaries of William Byrd of Virginia and Matthew Lewis of Jamaica are used. While in Jamaica slavery created fundamental societal instability, in Virginia slavery served as a tool to promote …

The Influence Of Religion On Science: The Case Of The Idea Of Predestination In Biospeleology., Aldemaro Romero Jr. Apr 2016

The Influence Of Religion On Science: The Case Of The Idea Of Predestination In Biospeleology., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

Evolution has always been considered a battleground between religion and science. Despite that perception, there are some indications that religious beliefs have in uenced and continue to in uence some current interpretations in evolutionary biology. To that end I present evidence on how pervasive the theological idea of predestination, which has been long discussed in the the Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions, has in uenced some of the elucidations of the nature of biological evolution. I will concentrate on the history of ideas about the evolution of cave organisms to epitomize the strong in uence of religion on some evolutionary …

Origins And Relationships Of The Mixed Mesophytic Forest Of Oregon-Idaho, China, And Kentucky: Review And Synthesis, Jerry M. Baskin, Carol C. Baskin

Biology Faculty Publications

The Arcto-Tertiary Geoflora concept of Ralph Chaney, that the Mixed Mesophytic Forest of eastern Asia and eastern North America are relicts of a Northern Hemisphere high-latitude circumglobal deciduous forest of the Late Cretaceous–Early Tertiary that migrated south to the temperate zone as an intact unit, was shown by Wolfe and others to be invalid. To explain the origin and development of these disjunct forests, Wolfe and Tiffney developed the boreotropical hypothesis. Accordingly, a paratropical (near-tropical) rainforest flora containing a mixture of tropical, paratropical, and temperate genera developed at several places in the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere in the …

Media Literacy Curriculum For The Adolescent Young Adult Classroom, Leah Oliver Apr 2016

Media Literacy Curriculum For The Adolescent Young Adult Classroom, Leah Oliver

Honors Projects

The American public education system has been lagging behind other developed nations in its implementation of media literacy curricula throughout all grade levels. As mass media outlets (including television, film, magazines, advertisements, and video games) become more prevalent in our society, the accompanying job market and the everyday use of electronic media platforms require high school and college graduates to have at least a basic understanding of how media can be used to disseminate information and to buy and sell products. Moreover, research studies in the field suggest that exposure to popular culture mass media can greatly influence teens’ self-esteem, …

Applying World Music Pedagogy Techniques In The Intermediate String Orchestra: A Curriculum For The Study And Performance Of Latin American Folk Music, Sarah Josephine Gongaware

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to create an intermediate string orchestra curriculum which develops string techniques through the study and performance of music from Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. This year-long curriculum encompasses five, country-specific units which can be interspersed throughout the academic year. Each unit includes musical arrangements which vary in style, genre, or originating region. These arrangements are accompanied by lesson plans which include cultural and historical background information, listening suggestions, learning objectives, learning sequence, and assessment strategies. The musical arrangements seek to develop intonation, left-hand positions, bow distribution, string crossings, bowing styles, and reinforce …

The Ethiopian State: Perennial Challenges In The Struggle For Development, Hawi Tilahune Apr 2016

The Ethiopian State: Perennial Challenges In The Struggle For Development, Hawi Tilahune

International Studies Honors Projects

This honors thesis examines the evolution of the state and nation-building processes in four historical periods in Ethiopia. I argue that, in the generational efforts towards consolidation and change, each period throws up acute tensions between an increasingly centralizing political apparatus and the civic and material existence of ethnic peripheries. These contradictions are apparent in the attempts to secure the country's territorial sovereignty under Menelik II, the efforts towards modernization by Emperor Haile Selassie, the militaristic-cum-Marxist drive under Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam, and the construction of a developmental state under the leadership of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. While some achievements …
