Stonewall On The Potomac: Gay Political Activism In Washington, Dc, 1961-1973, Peter Bonds

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The first organized demonstration on behalf of gay rights in the United States occurred in front of the White House on April 16, 1965. Six years later, Dr. Franklin E. Kameny became the first openly gay American to run for a seat in the United States Congress when he launched his campaign to become Washington’s delegate to the House of Representatives in February 1971. The following year, Washington’s school board voted to include sexual orientation alongside gender and race as a protected category in its non-discrimination employment policy. This victory for gay Washingtonians was expanded on in 1973, when Washington’s …

Understanding The Human Domain: Modification And Utilization Of A Leopold Matrix To Assess The Impact Of Activity Based Intelligence And Open Source Information Or Other Proposed Solutions, Kenneth Sydnor May 2016

Understanding The Human Domain: Modification And Utilization Of A Leopold Matrix To Assess The Impact Of Activity Based Intelligence And Open Source Information Or Other Proposed Solutions, Kenneth Sydnor

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The emphasis on understanding the human domain (HD) over the last decade of war, counterterrorism, and counterinsurgency operations has provided opportunities to test multiple new tools, data sources and analytical approaches to age-old intelligence problems. While these tools were utilized in Iraq and Afghanistan with varying degrees of success, a comprehensive analytical method was not developed to assess the benefits of the proposed solutions and their impact on understanding the human domain. Given the paradigm shift away from an academic or scholarly way of viewing the Human Domain towards a nomenclature and understanding denoted in “physical” geography-type terms, what tool …

Florentine Bookbinding And Restoration, Emily Erin Purcell May 2016

Florentine Bookbinding And Restoration, Emily Erin Purcell

Senior Theses

Florence, Italy is a hub for art and literature. These two disciplines come together in the tradition of bookbinding, which is alive and well in Florence. A city that appreciates its own rich culture, Florence maintains many traditional practices and crafts, such as bookbinding and metalworking. The Florentines preserve more than just practices, though. The numerous museums in Florence work to physically protect and store pieces of art, artifacts, and documents. All of this preservation was challenged in 1966, with the flood of Florence’s Arno River. The flood destroyed countless manuscripts, books, and pieces of art. With this devastation, a …

The Inuit Vs. The Steamboat: Human Exhibitionism And Popular Concerns About The Effects Of The Market Revolution In The Early Republic, Ryan Bachman May 2016

The Inuit Vs. The Steamboat: Human Exhibitionism And Popular Concerns About The Effects Of The Market Revolution In The Early Republic, Ryan Bachman

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In the early nineteenth century, a new form of human exhibitionism spread through eastern American cities. While public displays featuring live human beings had existed since the colonial era, these new shows specifically focused on Native Americans. This paper examines one such show, the Inuit Exhibition of 1820-1821, as a case study of this phenomena. Primarily through the use of contemporary newspaper accounts, this project argues that shows like the Inuit Exhibition occurred within a cultural context that legitimized the practice of human exhibitionism as a genuine, post-Enlightenment method of educating citizens about the natural world. Furthermore, so-called “Indian Exhibitions” …

An Examination Of The Psychometric Properties Of And Validity Evidence For The Alliant Intercultural Competency Scale, Elizabeth L. Smith May 2016

An Examination Of The Psychometric Properties Of And Validity Evidence For The Alliant Intercultural Competency Scale, Elizabeth L. Smith

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The alliant intercultural competency scale was developed by Henderson et al. (2015) to measure intercultural competence in students in higher education. Henderson et al. outlined five domains representative of an interculturally competent professional: knowledge, communication, attitudes, professional practice, and negotiated space. In the current study, the AICS was revised (AICS-R) and then evaluated using Benson’s (1998) framework for construct validity. Exploratory factor analysis results suggested a five-factor model strongly aligned with the five aforementioned domains; this provides support for the internal structure of the AICS-R. Scores from the AICS-R were correlated with external measures, and group differences in scores were …

Effect Of Distance Caregiver Coaching On Functional Skills Of A Child With Traumatic Brain Injury, Michelle R. Witt May 2016

Effect Of Distance Caregiver Coaching On Functional Skills Of A Child With Traumatic Brain Injury, Michelle R. Witt

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Brain injury is a major public health concern affecting nearly 5 million Americans annually with a cost exceeding $60 billion in the United States. Acquired and traumatic brain injuries cause physical, cognitive and social deficits resulting in behavioral, affective, cognitive, and physical changes. Though the biomechanical injury may be the initial source of the behavioral changes, environmental factors frequently contribute to maintaining maladaptive behaviors. Behavioral and affective changes in the person with a brain injury are frequently cited as the most distressing issues for caregivers, and their need for education and training is well documented. Interactions between caregivers and persons …

Faculty Publications

Background

HPV infection causes cervical cancer, a major contributor to morbidity and mortality among low-income Mexican women. Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing is now a primary screening strategy in Mexico’s early cervical cancer detection program (ECDP). Research on Mexican women’s perceptions of HPV and testing is necessary for establishing culturally appropriate protocols and educational materials. Here, we explore perceptions about HPV and HPV-related risk factors among low-income Mexican ECDP participants.

Methods

We conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 ECDP participants from two primary care health clinics in Michoacán state, Mexico. Interviews addressed women’s understandings of and experiences with HPV and HPV …

A Comparison Of Health Care Systems In The Western World, Katherine Regan Lawall May 2016

A Comparison Of Health Care Systems In The Western World, Katherine Regan Lawall

Senior Theses

This senior thesis evaluates the health care systems of the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and Denmark, before looking at how their approaches could be adapted to the U.S. system. I picked these specific countries due to their similarity in geographic location, demographic, religious affiliations, and population size but have different styles of health care systems (public, mixed, and private) that are set up in varying ways. Additionally, these populations have similar health issues to one another, such as aging-populations, and to the U.S. as well like the top causes of death. However, these four western European countries have longer life expediencies …

Dynamical Characteristics Of Atmospheric Aerosols Over Ig Region, Manish Sharma, Ramesh P. Singh, Rajesh Kumar

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The dynamical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols over the Indo-Gangetic (IG) region are primarily dependent on the geographical settings and meteorological conditions. Detailed analysis of multi satellite data and ground observations have been carried out over three different cities i.e. Kanpur, Greater Noida and Amritsar during 2010-2013. Level-3 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) terra daily global grid product with spatial resolution of 1° × 1° shows the mean AOD at 500 nm wavelength value of 0.73, 0.70 and 0.67 with the standard deviation of 0.43, 0.39 and 0.36 respectively over Amritsar, Greater Noida and Kanpur. Our detailed analysis shows characteristic behavior …

Geography Of Gender And The Gender Of Geography In The Roman Imagination, Austin Howard May 2016

Geography Of Gender And The Gender Of Geography In The Roman Imagination, Austin Howard

Student Research Symposium

This paper argues for a profound link between gendered stereotypes and geography in the Graeco-Roman imagination focusing on the early Roman Empire. Hitherto, this link has been mentioned, sometimes assumed, and almost never treated as a venture worthy or deeper study or unifying themes, apart from questions of “proto-racism.” Notwithstanding, the links can be drawn comparing how the peoples living in different parts of the empire are described and how stereotypes of gender also appear in historical and literary texts. By careful examination (including cross-examination) of Strabo, Tacitus, Livy, Julius Caesar, and others, I seek the argue for a strong …

Aquifer Vulnerability Modeling In New Jersey Through The Use Of Modified Drastic Methodology, Clement Uduk, Tanja Hopmans May 2016

Aquifer Vulnerability Modeling In New Jersey Through The Use Of Modified Drastic Methodology, Clement Uduk, Tanja Hopmans

Student Research Symposium

Due to the global average increase in temperature over the last 50 years, sea levels have been rising and making coastal aquifers more susceptible to saltwater intrusion. The average rate of sea level rise has increased from 2 mm/year to 3.5 mm/year during the twentieth century. The state of New Jersey is not only densely populated but the development along coastlines makes inundation a potential serious threat. New Jersey is diverse in aquifer types, in addition to the types of water bodies surrounding New Jersey, and makes for an interesting case study for groundwater vulnerability. The EPA has a universal …

Then And Now: Vegetative Change Detection On Mount St. Helens 2000-2015, Douglas S. Thalacker, Andrés Holz May 2016

Then And Now: Vegetative Change Detection On Mount St. Helens 2000-2015, Douglas S. Thalacker, Andrés Holz

Student Research Symposium

The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens (MSH) proved a dramatic event with many important socio-economic consequences. In addition, this eruption resulted in an array of ecological consequences with subsequent studies and profound theoretical ramifications. The eruption created a complex gradient in disturbance severity on the northern aspect of MSH3, promoting successional processes from varying starting points and change rates. This study uses a landscape-scale approach to quantify spatio-temporal trends in vegetative responses to the eruption from 2000-2015, relying on Landsat TM and ETM+ imagery focusing on the primary and (i.e. no biological legacies) secondary (i.e. with biological legacies) succession …

Quilting Our County: Fusing Research And Art Making In The Classroom, William Nieberding May 2016

Quilting Our County: Fusing Research And Art Making In The Classroom, William Nieberding

Bright Ideas Conference

Working with needles and thread, fabric, smartphones and laptops students in an art class for pre-service educators worked collaboratively to research the geography surrounding their university and create a quilt. In the process they gained first-hand experience in an arts-integrated approach to teaching and learning. Inspired by an account of elementary students exploring quilting and social studies, and informed by contemporary arts integration approaches the students worked collaboratively to plan and create an eighty-one square quilt. Challenges encountered along the way became productive spaces where research and art making blended to become active components of learning and expressing knowledge.

Plastic Pollution And The Global Throwaway Culture: Environmental Injustices Of Single-Use Plastic, Kristin L. Mcdermott May 2016

Plastic Pollution And The Global Throwaway Culture: Environmental Injustices Of Single-Use Plastic, Kristin L. Mcdermott

ENV 434 Environmental Justice

The global throwaway culture has created a cross-ecosystem plastic pollution injustice. The first to suffer this injustice will be the most vulnerable. Our oceans have become our dumpsters. The throwaway culture has created a disrespect of material goods that has turned the earth’s resources into rubbish after a single use. Eighty percent of the yearly 8 million tons of plastic that enter the ocean is single use plastic, such as plastic bottles, plastic shopping bags, or cigarette lighters.[1] Plastic has destroyed ecosystems, robbing impoverished communities of natural resources and of a healthy and safe living environment. First to suffer …

Day By Date: Postcolonial Contention And Cosmopolitan Temporality In Niyi Osundare’S Days, Senayon Olaoluwa May 2016

Day By Date: Postcolonial Contention And Cosmopolitan Temporality In Niyi Osundare’S Days, Senayon Olaoluwa

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article reflects on the intersection of temporality and cosmopolitanism through a reading of Niyi Osundare's long poem Days.[1] The article argues that Osundare constructs temporality as an evolutionary and relative category by showing the fusion of an African temporal order with modernity's temporal model. It further contends that the fusion is emblematic of the hybrid and integrative disposition of postcolonial poetry which allows for a constellation of the indigenous and the western. The article demonstrates that although indigenous African templates of time reckoning may not have originally aligned themselves with the seven-day week equation, such indigenous modes have …

Cartographies Of Transnational Desires: Bi-National Same-Sex Couples In Literature And Film, Alla Ivanchikova May 2016

Cartographies Of Transnational Desires: Bi-National Same-Sex Couples In Literature And Film, Alla Ivanchikova

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article examines the issue of transnationality from the point of view afforded by a particular perspective—a bi-national queer couple—as brought into relief by three recent cultural texts: Philip Gambone’s novel Beijing (2003), a film by Israeli director Michael Mayer, Out in the Dark (2012); and a film by Spanish director Julio Medem, Room in Rome (2010). Whereas in bi-national opposite-sex unions each partner can become a sponsor of his or her spouse for immigration purposes, bi-national queer couples, due to the fact that the majority of nation-states in today’s world do not have provisions for same-sex unions, regularly …

Regimes Of Prestige And Power: Transnational Authorship And International Acclaim In Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds, Kyle Eveleth May 2016

Regimes Of Prestige And Power: Transnational Authorship And International Acclaim In Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds, Kyle Eveleth

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This essay will examine the reception of Rutu Modan’s international-award-winning graphic novel Exit Wounds (2007) in the massive cultural centers of the United States and France by situating its success within the inter/transnational dynamics of the contemporary comics market, or what James English would term an “economy of prestige.” My essay reconsiders Exit Wounds beyond its popular status as an international phenomenon—that is, one that crosses national borders but which maintains distinctions between those nations it enters and its home state—by considering it a transnational work—one which blurs the lines between nation-states in its form, function, and reception. To do …

Beyond Metropolises: Hybridity In A Transnational Context, Raihan Sharif May 2016

Beyond Metropolises: Hybridity In A Transnational Context, Raihan Sharif

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

Beyond metropolises and within transnational contexts, investigating hybridity discourses is long overdue. This article argues that the epistemic violence embedded in such discourse has grave implications for the very impoverished nations and peoples with whom it claims solidarity and that, because this discourse is trendy in academia, its service to neoliberal capitalism is both easy to miss and important to expose. Interstices of postcolonial hybridity discourses, development discourses, and environmental justice discourses—dominant versions of which are segregated from contextual issues—as produced in Western academia and exported to third world countries for appropriation as developmental efforts—reveal epistemic violence, the manipulation of …

New York City Underwater: Climate Change Mitigation And Adaptation, Anna Marshall May 2016

New York City Underwater: Climate Change Mitigation And Adaptation, Anna Marshall

Student Theses 2015-Present

I address the effects of climate change on New York City, and what can be done to minimize these effects. I explain the causes and impacts of sea level rise on New York City, specifically referencing New York City policies and programs that can help mitigate these impacts. I use data from New York City government, the New York City Panel on Climate Change, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to collect information about greenhouse gas emissions, and describe how this leads to sea level rise. Then, I use environmental socio-economics, urban planning, and environmental politics in New York …

At Home In The Free-Market World: The Neoliberal Cosmopolitan Man In Salman Rushdie's Fury, Mary J. Nitsch May 2016

At Home In The Free-Market World: The Neoliberal Cosmopolitan Man In Salman Rushdie's Fury, Mary J. Nitsch

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article offers an exploration of the concept of cosmopolitanism in Salman Rushdie's novel, Fury. Through both Rushdie's and his protagonist's cosmopolitanism, the ambivalence of the position is revealed in particular through the latter's (un)easy access to global commodities and problematic exploitation of women. The economic and gender exploitations oddly converge in Solanka's latest creative project, the success of which glosses over the problematics of class and gender privilege. Ultimately, the protagonist’s cosmopolitanism truly impedes any critique cosmopolitanism might afford: he is readily swept up in the rising tide of the 90s financial boom and the frequently misogynist sexuality …

Transnational Identities And Religious Traditions: A Case Of Religious Double Belonging In India, Enrico Beltramini May 2016

Transnational Identities And Religious Traditions: A Case Of Religious Double Belonging In India, Enrico Beltramini

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article addresses the emerging subject of religious “double belonging”: what does it mean to belong to two religious traditions? The lives of two French Roman Catholic priests, who moved to India for spiritual search and mission, work as a prism to deepen understanding of the subject, specifically regarding the relationships among identity, religious tradition, and faith. While these priests had their identities transformed as a mutable construct of negotiations in India, a more complex process occurred at the level of religious tradition. If Monchanin’s perfect and undefiled faith manifested itself in insulating the original Christian tradition from Indian influences, …

Measuring Segregation Patterns And Change: A Co-Location Quotient Approach, Natalia Vorotyntseva May 2016

Measuring Segregation Patterns And Change: A Co-Location Quotient Approach, Natalia Vorotyntseva

Doctoral Dissertations

There are many segregation measures introduced and utilized in geographic research up to this date. Because residential segregation can be defined in more than one way the measure’s formulation is dependent on the particular definition the researcher is trying to reflect. Another distinctive feature of the quantitative exploration of segregation is the role of geographic scale. In contrast, global indices focus on overall level of spatial separation of population in the urban area while local indices assume that the index magnitude varies from place to place across the city. The main purpose of this study is to introduce a new …
