Live Edges: All Possible Adjacencies, Rebecca Leffell Koren May 2016

Live Edges: All Possible Adjacencies, Rebecca Leffell Koren

Masters Theses

Edge is a deceptive word. It suggests lines, borders, designations—a kind of certainty. I see edge instead as a porous adjacency—the noise at the intersection of planes that adds meaning, rather than separation. Live Edges is a design research practice that is hyperobservational and multi-planar. Equal parts training ground and methodology, what began as an effort to derive graphic form from the intangible qualities of place developed into an approach to parsing complexity.

Setting locality as my origin point, signifiers of place—materiality, behavior, orientation, architectural form—serve as catalysts for graphic response. I interpret landscape in order to construct my own, …

Hyphen Nation: A Reconciliation, Lynn Amhaz May 2016

Hyphen Nation: A Reconciliation, Lynn Amhaz

Masters Theses

As a transnational living between Beirut, Lebanon, and Providence, Rhode Island, in the United States, I use my design practice to negotiate, reconcile and inform a cultural identity defined through an equation of two different nations. I am open to what comes from this reality between. Linguistically, a hyphen simultaneously binds and divides a compound term. As a designer, I view the hyphen as a shifting axis for telling stories. In the process, I approach the hyphen as an indeterminate zone — a productive site for authoring systems and suggesting narratives linking two nations — their cultures, languages, times and …

Investigation Into The Predictive Capability Of Macro-Economic Features In Modelling Credit Risk For Small Medium Enterprises, Kevin Mctiernan May 2016

Investigation Into The Predictive Capability Of Macro-Economic Features In Modelling Credit Risk For Small Medium Enterprises, Kevin Mctiernan

Dissertations

This research project investigates the predictive capability of macro-economic features in modelling credit risk for small medium enterprises (SME/SMEs). There have been indications that there is strong correlation between economic growth and the size of the SME sector in an economy. However, since the financial crisis and consequent policies and regulations, SMEs have been hampered in attempts to access credit. It has also been noted that while there is a substantial amount of credit risk literature, there is little research on how macro-economic factors affect credit risk. Being able to improve credit scoring by even a small amount can have …

Knowing King Gésar Between Buddhist Monastery And Socialist Academy, Or The Practices Of Secularism In Inner Asia, Matthew W. King May 2016

Knowing King Gésar Between Buddhist Monastery And Socialist Academy, Or The Practices Of Secularism In Inner Asia, Matthew W. King

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This argues that selective memories of imperial-era Buddhist knowledge practices helped Soviet-era scholars localize secularist ideology, knowledge practices, and historical models in post-imperial Mongolia. At the root of one such memory was the eighteenth century eastern Tibetan Buddhist polymath Sumpa Khenpo, who differentiated between historical, legendary and enlightened King Gésars in a letter correspondence with the Sixth Panchen Lama, Palden Yéshé (1738-1780). To the delight of his later Soviet and socialist Mongolian readers, Sumpa Khenpo drew his conclusions about the historical Gésar based on observable evidence instead of scriptural authority. On the basis of a close examination of the contents …

Factors Driving The Concentration Of Ephemeral Flow, Gretchen Anne Guyer May 2016

Factors Driving The Concentration Of Ephemeral Flow, Gretchen Anne Guyer

Dissertations and Theses

In spite of decades of related research, stream channel initiation is still not well understood. Current theories of channel initiation are grounded in research conducted by Montgomery and Dietrich, largely in the transport limited, temperate, humid climate of the Pacific Northwest, USA. This field data driven work concluded that the drainage area required for channel initiation is directly correlated to the slope of the contributing area. However, there are a host of related variables that have yet to be examined in the field. This study revisits the slope-area relationship focusing on ephemeral overland flow in headwaters of both the Pacific …

The Quasi-Human Child: How Normative Conceptions Of Childhood Enabled Neoliberal School Reform In The United States, Debbie Sonu May 2016

The Quasi-Human Child: How Normative Conceptions Of Childhood Enabled Neoliberal School Reform In The United States, Debbie Sonu

Publications and Research

This paper argues that normative conceptions of the child, as a natural quasi-human being in need of guidance, enable current school reforms in the United States to directly link the child to neoliberal aims and objectives. In using Foucault’s concept of governmentality and disciplinary power, we first present how the child is constructed as a subject of the adult world, then trace how such understandings invite school policies and practices that worked on the child, rather than with the child. In order to understand how the child comes to be known and recognized as a learner, both at the intersections …

The "Adam Cube" : Categorizing Portland, Oregon's Urbanization Using Gis And Spatial Statistics, Jeremy Grotbo May 2016

The "Adam Cube" : Categorizing Portland, Oregon's Urbanization Using Gis And Spatial Statistics, Jeremy Grotbo

Dissertations and Theses

Transportation availability and land use intensity demonstrate a strong relationship, with intense development concentrated near significant transportation investment. Transportation networks evolved in response to emergent transportation technologies and changing urban land uses. The irregular distribution of transportation systems reinforced patterns of land use development, shaping urban form. Understanding the relationships between transportation and the intensity of land uses allows urban geographers and city planners to explain the urbanization processes, as well as to identify areas historically susceptible to future development. The goal of this research is to develop a quantitative framework for the analysis of the development of urban form …

The Influence Of Shangqing Taoist Sect's Meditation Method On The Pre-Song-Dynasty Fictions, Qingchuan Wan May 2016

The Influence Of Shangqing Taoist Sect's Meditation Method On The Pre-Song-Dynasty Fictions, Qingchuan Wan

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Shangqing Taoist Sect's meditation method of "thought-holding" was similar to literary imagination in that it was characterized by a pictorial thinking, and this method inserted deep influence on the Taoist fiction writing in the pre-Song Dynasty. Some authors writing about immortal beings sat in meditation in front of the portraiture and wrote their novels, and some authors wrote out of their mystic illusions resulted from long and intensive meditation, and some authors wrote out of supernatural inspirations. The descriptions about the geography, plants, the clothes and pageants of the immortals reflected the influence from the Taoist portraiture and the process …

The Reality Of Educational Services In The City Of Rumaitha And Building A Model Of Spatial Suitability For Them Using Geographic Information Systems (Gis), Raad Abdul Hussein Mohammed Al-Gharibawi, Aqeel Kazim Wali

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Geography is experiencing a massive information revolution that is difficult to navigate and utilize without the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. This is achieved through the ability to perform multiple functions in managing, processing, analyzing, storing, and retrieving data and information, as well as the ability to update and link data and information together, and accurately produce results in various formats. Decision-makers can rely on this technology to address many of the problems presented, particularly those related to educational services. This research came in three sections preceded by an introduction. The first section presented the reality of educational …

Thinking Deeply, Creating Richly: Learner Transformation Through Narrative, Kaylea Hascall Champion

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Narrative methods support transformative teaching and learning by accessing human cognitive strengths, including memory, reflection, and self-awareness. This paper explores the enduring and mindful use of narrative in education – as a method for transformative teaching and learning. A narrative is the intentional conversion of a group of events, participants, and details into a constructed reality that illustrates causes, characters, and results. Narrative development is a native human process by which we teach, learn, and remember. Narrative educational methods incorporate two key characteristics: integrative sense making, and shared connection building. Diverse disciplines – including biology, psychology, economics, literature, medicine, history, …

Gathered on the shores of Flathead Lake in Polson, Montana, the participants explored the interests, rights, roles, and responsibilities of indigenous people in the international Columbia River Basin. This symposium generated two notable outcomes: first, The Columbia River Basin: A Sense of the Future—a synthesis of interests and concerns with regard to the future of the transboundary river basin as captured by the Universities Consortium during …

Views On Implementation And How They Could Be Used In Service Design, Tim Overkamp, Stefan Holmlid May 2016

Views On Implementation And How They Could Be Used In Service Design, Tim Overkamp, Stefan Holmlid

ServDes Conference Series

Although service designers have proven their abilities in the fuzzy front end of service development, their skills regarding implementation have been criticised and many service designs are not implemented successfully. So far, there has been little discussion concerning service implementation in service design research and there is potential for further development of this aspect of the design of services. This paper intends to contribute to this development by presenting different views on implementation from fields that are related to service design, such as product and interaction design. These fields mostly see implementation as the delivery of generic resources and process …

Revisiting Pss And Service Design In The Light Of Sd-Logic, Nina Costa, Lia Patrício, Nicola Morelli May 2016

Revisiting Pss And Service Design In The Light Of Sd-Logic, Nina Costa, Lia Patrício, Nicola Morelli

ServDes Conference Series

Researchers and practitioners have increasingly recognized the importance of offering value propositions to customers that enable value co-creation as discussed in the service dominant logic (SD-logic). SD-logic recognizes customers as active co-creators and posits that products and services are only means to an end. Also, different approaches, methods and tools have been developed to design value propositions however they still lack to explicit the SD- logic principles. The design of solutions that provide value-in-use is at the centre of both Product Service System (PSS) approach and service design (SD). Whereas PSS focuses on designing required functions and aims at sustainability, …

Thematic Research In The Frame Creation Process, Jos Van Leeuwen, Dick Rijken, Iefke Bloothoofd, Eefje Cobussen, Bram Reurings, Rob Ruts

ServDes Conference Series

Many of today’s challenges that confront society are complex and dynamic and require new perspectives, new ways of looking at problems and issues, in order to be able to come to solutions that could not be found before. This process is called reframing and we suggest that one of the key stages in this process is thematic research, the search for themes that underlie these complex challenges. These themes generally turn out to be human themes, related to socio-emotional aspects of life. In this paper we report our experiences and lessons learned from a series of cases in which we …

Empowering Stakeholders – Simulation Games As A Participatory Method, Jan Eckert

ServDes Conference Series

In cross-disciplinary projects, stakeholders often come with different abilities to express their requirements or negotiate future scenarios. To meet these different abilities, a participatory approach offers a variety of methods that can create a platform for discussions but not always can exclude emerging hierarchies between different stakeholder groups. In this context simulation games represent an interesting alternative to act and discuss in an altered space by providing a playful approach. This paper reports on the development of Work A Round, a simulation game designed for the consultancy and planning in the field of multi– located knowledge work and workplace design. …

Data-Need Fit – Towards Data-Driven Business Model Innovation, Katrin Mathis, Felix Köbler May 2016

Data-Need Fit – Towards Data-Driven Business Model Innovation, Katrin Mathis, Felix Köbler

ServDes Conference Series

Today’s world is one of growing data, yet few companies have succeeded in leveraging data for novel business models. This paper aims to provide an evaluated approach to understanding what kind of data is available and to matching data with potential user needs for compelling value propositions. For this purpose, the paper introduces, on the one hand, the Data Canvas as a new method for considering data resources systematically in the development of business models and, on the other hand, the Data-Need Fit as a conceptual basis for the established business model innovation process according to Osterwalder, Pigneur, Bernarda & …
