Que Salgamos Más Adelante: Identity, Community, And The Desire For Development In Oaxaca, Mexico, Lori Klivak Jul 2016

Que Salgamos Más Adelante: Identity, Community, And The Desire For Development In Oaxaca, Mexico, Lori Klivak

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation examines how the desire to salir adelante, to improve oneself and one’s community, motivates townspeople to participate in development projects that promise to support and strengthen their pueblo. More specifically, I examine the material, social, and moral dimensions of progress and development, and the various ways indigenous people claim their place in the modern world. I am interested in the ways Zapotec people in Oaxaca, Mexico engage with development strategies and make them amenable to their own cultural practices and values. I am likewise interested in the extent to which the skills, habits, orientations and identities generated through …

Making Men In The City: Articulating Masculinity And Space In Urban India, Madhura Lohokare Jul 2016

Making Men In The City: Articulating Masculinity And Space In Urban India, Madhura Lohokare

Dissertations - ALL

In my dissertation, I illustrate the way in which processes in contemporary urban India structure the making/ unmaking of gendered identities for young men in a working class, scheduled caste neighborhood in the western Indian city of Pune. Present day Pune, an aspiring metropolis, presents a complex socio-spatial intersection of neoliberal processes and peculiar historical trajectories of caste exclusion; this dissertation seeks to highlight how socio-spatial dynamics of the city produce and sustain gendered identities and inequalities in Pune, a city hitherto neglected in academic research. Also, my focus on young men’s gendered identities speaks to a growing recognition that …

Climate change has become a key environmental narrative of the 21st century. However, emphasis on the science of climate change has overshadowed studies focusing on human interpretations of climate history, of adaptation and resilience, and of explorations of the institutions and cultural coping strategies that may have helped people adapt to climate changes in the past. Moreover, although the idea of climate change has been subject to considerable scrutiny by the physical sciences, recent climate scholarship has highlighted the need for a re‐examination of the cultural and spatial dimensions of climate, with contributions from the humanities and social sciences. Establishing …

When a place loses population, it’s assumed that’s because people leave. But it’s not that simple. What’s lost in translation is today’s households have fewer people living in them than they did years prior. For instance, 40% of mothers aged 40 to 44 had four or more children in 1976. Today, it’s 14%. Overall, the average American household contracted from 3.14 people in 1970 to 2.54 today. This can explain the apparent paradox of population loss in “shrinking” communities while the number of occupied households grows.

Such was the case in Cuyahoga County. There were 1.72 million residents in the …

Reflections On U.S.-Cuba Military-To-Military Contacts, Hal Klepak Jul 2016

Reflections On U.S.-Cuba Military-To-Military Contacts, Hal Klepak

Strategic Forums

The strategic import of U.S.-Cuba relations was underscored by President Barack Obama’s historic visit to Cuba from March 20–22, 2016, and his comment that he had come to Cuba “to bury the last remnant of the Cold War in the Americas.” Geography also reinforces the strategic importance of both countries to one another. Cuba sits astride the intersection of the three large bodies of water dominating the approaches to the southern United States. The large island nation is in a position to block, complicate, or facilitate U.S. border control efforts in many ways. Partnering with Cuba also might allow the …

Aeschylus And National Socialism: Lothar Müthel's Orestie As Nazi Propaganda, Rachel Elizabeth Maxwell Jul 2016

Aeschylus And National Socialism: Lothar Müthel's Orestie As Nazi Propaganda, Rachel Elizabeth Maxwell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the text, stage design, and historical context of Lothar Müthel's production of Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy in 1936, which was sponsored by the National Socialist government during a broader publicity campaign during the Summer Olympics of 1936. The third play, Eumenides (Die Versöhnung in German) has democratic undertones, and therefore seems incompatible with Nazi ideology at first glance. There are three ways in which the Nazis made Müthel's adaptation of Die Versöhnung compatible. First, in the context of the Olympics, the Nazis attempted to draw a connection or relationship between modern German and ancient Greek culture, implying themselves …

Envelope Elegy, Caleb P. Nelson Jul 2016

Envelope Elegy, Caleb P. Nelson

All NMU Master's Theses

What would it mean to understand the essence of a discipline? What would it meant to find the center of poetry? I argue in the introduction to this thesis that poetry has no center. One cannot come to know the capital “T” truth of poetry. Our language is too unstable, our intentions too vast, and our experiences are too varied. Thus, I interrogate what this might mean for the writer and the poetic experience more generally. By doing this, I ultimately interrogate what this means for me. However, I also accept T.S. Eliot’s claim that mature poetry has the unique …

Appropriability And The Retrieval Of Knowledge After Spillovers, Tufool Alnuaimi, Gerard George Jul 2016

Appropriability And The Retrieval Of Knowledge After Spillovers, Tufool Alnuaimi, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Firms create and capture value through innovation. In technology-driven firms, there has been an explicit emphasis on appropriability through imitation deterrence and cumulative inventions that build on prior firm innovation. We introduce systematic empirical evidence for a third mechanism of appropriability namely, knowledge retrieval, which is defined as the re-absorption of previously spilled knowledge. We extend previous studies which consider technological complexity and organizational coupling as predictors of appropriability by examining their impact on knowledge retrieval. We find that technological complexity has a curvilinear relationship with retrieval while organizational coupling has a negative relationship. We discuss the implications of these …

Just Hospitality: Wage Theft, Grassroots Labor Organizing, And Activist Research In Nashville, Tennessee, Rachel Tyree

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This politically engaged project locally grounds the efforts of low-wage workers in the United States who are addressing the nationwide epidemic of wage theft by focusing on the particular experience of organized hospitality cleaning workers at a worker center in Nashville, Tennessee. While being both collaborative and reflexive, this activist anthropological research utilizes observant participation, in-depth interviews, and organizational and archival research to explore the issues identified by members and organizers at the worker center, illustrate the alternative theories of change being generated from grassroots labor organizing efforts in light of state mechanisms that do not protect all workers, and …

The "Creative Workspace": A Comparative Analysis Of Stakeholder Perceptions, Augustina Radziunaite Jul 2016

The "Creative Workspace": A Comparative Analysis Of Stakeholder Perceptions, Augustina Radziunaite

Master's Theses

The rise of information technologies and creative industries formed a new class of “creative knowledge workers” with special needs for a workspace design. The recent tendency of playful and bold workspace designs for creative industries was labeled by some researchers as a “creative workspace,” but a body of knowledge about design strategies supporting “creative knowledge workers’” performance is still limited.

This master’s thesis research attempts to define “creative workspace” design phenomenon based on the three main stakeholder groups’ perceptions. The research analyzes existing literature and conducts in-depth interviews with designers and users to collect the data and compare the findings. …

Collaborative Research Praxis To Establish Baseline Ecoacoustics Conditions In Gitga'at Territory, Max Ritts, Stuart H. Gage, Chris R. Picard, Ethan Dundas, Steven Dundas

Geography

This paper combines methodological discussion and scientific analysis to convey the results of an effort by the Gitga'at First Nation and academic partners to construct an acoustic baseline in Gitga'at Territory (aka. British Columbia, CA). Between June 2013 and 2014, we collected 257,327 field-recordings from eight sites as part of the Gitga'at Ecological and Cultural Monitoring Program. Our goals were: (1) to develop an acoustic baseline in a portion of Gitga'at Territory prioritized by local decision-makers, (2) to advance Gitga'at research capacity through the collaborative and reflexive structure of our approach. We argue that reorienting ecological knowledge production as praxis-based …

Passenger Obesity And Regional Aircraft Performance For The Most Corpulent States In The Usa, Douglas D. Boyd Jul 2016

Passenger Obesity And Regional Aircraft Performance For The Most Corpulent States In The Usa, Douglas D. Boyd

Publications

Obesity affects over 25% of Americans; however, prescribed FAA standard passenger weights for US airlines are based on data compiled 15 years ago. Since increased passenger weight degrades aircraft performance and may lead to a loss of control, the hypothesis herein is that passenger weight under-estimation for states with high obesity rates could potentially lead to a runway overrun or the inability to out climb rising terrain. In terms of the employed methodology, current person weights for the ten most obese states were determined using nationwide data adjusted for state ethnicity. Performance degradation for regional aircraft was assessed by accelerate-stop …

The Comparison Of Friedel-Crafts Alkylation And Acylation As A Means To Synthesise Alkyl Xylenes, Penny Whalley Jul 2016

The Comparison Of Friedel-Crafts Alkylation And Acylation As A Means To Synthesise Alkyl Xylenes, Penny Whalley

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The aim of this project was to synthesise and characterise an alkyl xylene using both a Friedel-Crafts alkylation and a Friedel-Crafts acylation. The literature stated that whilst alkylation raised many issues with polyalkylation, transalkylation, dealkylation and rearrangement of the electrophile, acylation with subsequent reduction of the carbonyl provided a far less problematic route. Firstly, Friedel-Crafts alkylation of m-xylene was performed using t-butyl chloride. The product was purified by vacuum distillation and rotary evaporation. Analysis using IR, GC-FID, GC-MS and NMR allowed the conclusion of a 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene product. Secondly, Friedel-Crafts acylation of m-xylene was performed using butyryl chloride. Analysis using …

Killing The State: The Cultural Afterlife Of Edward Byrne, Justin Turner

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The death of a police officer provides us a chance to understand our current histories. As something tragic, the bodies of officers killed in the line-of-duty gain national attention. On display at police funerals is the enormous power of the state, as thousands of officers escort the casket, while helicopters and SWAT, accompanies the body to its final resting place. Following the officer’s death is a nation’s grief. As bills are passed in their honor, and weeks are named for those lost, the nation responds to such acts with general anger and disbelief. The killing of a police officer, generally, …

Ecological And Reproductive Consequences Of Morphological Variation In Egregia Menziesii (Turner) Areshoug, Heather K. Fulton-Bennett

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The extensive morphological plasticity of seaweeds has been appreciated since the first species were described, however, the costs and benefits of this strategy are not yet well understood. Studies have reported that morphological variants differ in reproduction, growth, and physiology, in addition to the ways in which they impact surrounding communities. This study examined the consequences of morphological plasticity in the intertidal kelp, Egregia menziesii, which is common along rocky shores from Baja California to British Columbia. Egregia is also considered to be a foundation species due to the dense canopy it forms and the numerous species that depend on …

Hospital Service Quality Assessment And Analysis: A Multi-Perspective Approach, Joy Mari S. Bautista, Jazmin C. Tangsoc Jul 2016

Hospital Service Quality Assessment And Analysis: A Multi-Perspective Approach, Joy Mari S. Bautista, Jazmin C. Tangsoc

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Hospital service is critical to analyze because several stakeholders are essential to the inputs, processes and outputs of the entire service system. These stakeholders include patients (service recipients), health professionals (direct service providers), and hospital management (indirect service providers). Since the core of hospital service encompasses the welfare of humans, it is crucial to uphold and continuously improve service quality not just for the service recipients, as traditional service quality measurements do, but also for the service providers through a multi-perspective framework integrating significant factors for all key stakeholders in the assessment. Given this objective, we have initially developed a …

Theses and Dissertations

Ethnic minority research in the U.S. is important to study because of the increase of ethnic minorities over the past several decades. Content analyses help to track the progress of ethnic minority research and guide researchers to future areas of study. Journals of adolescence have been analyzed and coded in the following areas of methodology of the article: article topic, article funding by topic, funding agencies, geographic location of sample, and measures used. A steady increase in ethnic minority research by article topic, funding, and measures was found for some groups.

The Effect Of Generation On Retention Of Women Engineers In Aerospace And Industry, Kristine Maria Kiernan Jul 2016

The Effect Of Generation On Retention Of Women Engineers In Aerospace And Industry, Kristine Maria Kiernan

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the nature and extent of differences between generational cohorts regarding the effect of family factors on retention of women in engineering, with an emphasis on women in the aerospace industry. While 6% of the aerospace workforce is made up of aeronautical engineers, an additional 11.2% of the aerospace workforce is drawn from other engineering disciplines. Therefore, the analysis included all engineering sub-disciplines. In order to include women who had left the workforce, women in all industries were used as a proxy for women in aerospace.

Exits to other fields were modeled separately …
