Place, Imaginary, Identity: Place Ethnography In Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico, Tita Berger
American Studies ETDs
"Place for me is the locus of desire," writes Lucy Lippard in the opening to Lure of the Local (1997). This research project is about place. Two distinct sets of scholarship on place emerged in the 1970s and the 1990s. A third wave of place scholarship is evident today. Coming initially from geography and anthropology, the study of place is now ubiquitous across fields in history, cultural studies, architecture, planning, health sciences, art and other disciplines. Despite the sustained interest in the study of place, one of the hallmarks of place is the ranging and contested contours of what place …

© 2016 by the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists. Caecieleotris morrisi, new genus and species of sleeper (family Eleotridae), is described from a submerged freshwater cave in a karst region of the northern portion of the State of Oaxaca, Mexico, Río Papaloapan drainage, Gulf of Mexico basin. The new species represents the first cave-adapted sleeper known from the Western Hemisphere and is one of only 13 stygobitic gobiiforms known worldwide, with all others limited in distribution to the Indo-Pacific region. The new taxon represents a third independent evolution of a hypogean lifestyle in sleepers, the others being two species …
The Eco-Friendly Intermodal Delivery Network, Sergio Mourelo
The Eco-Friendly Intermodal Delivery Network, Sergio Mourelo
Senior Honors Theses
The design of the distribution process is a strategic issue for almost every company. As the use of advanced technology and automation increases in manufacturing and logistics, the implementation of autonomous and electrical transportation, such as driverless vehicles and electric trucks, has become an interesting topic of study within the last few years, with the main objective of minimizing distribution costs and delivery times. The purpose of this research is to prove that intermodal delivery networks, which may combine a train and several electric vehicles, are more efficient and environmentally friendly than unimodal networks for high volume and long haul …

Part II of this paper will examine and compare how the LGBT asylum process has evolved—specifically vis-à-vis identity and discretion—in the United States and Australia, which can help highlight some of the issues driven by improper application of Western essentialist LGBT definitions on asylum claims. Part II will also analyze the concepts of refugee and asylum law internationally, as well as the concerns of the gay international community with respect to asylum law globally. Parts III and IV will review the asylum process for LGBT asylum applicants in the United States and Australia, respectively—with a focus on identity, discretion, and …
Making Banks On A Global Scale: Management-Based Regulation As Agencement, Mika Viljanen
Making Banks On A Global Scale: Management-Based Regulation As Agencement, Mika Viljanen
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This article seeks to provide a theoretical account of how management-based regulation (MBR), a new regulatory style used by many global regulators, affects its targets. The article centers on a case study. It introduces agencement theory as the theoretical heuristic to inform the analysis of a global, large-scale MBR scheme, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision's Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Program (ICAAP). In agencement theory, agency is understood in a neomaterialist frame. The core idea is that an actor's actions are determined by the material assemblage that constitutes her. The agencement heuristic allows ICAAP to be conceptualized as a regulatory …
State Ownership And The United Nations Business And Human Rights Agenda: Three Instruments, Three Narratives, Mikko Rajavuori
State Ownership And The United Nations Business And Human Rights Agenda: Three Instruments, Three Narratives, Mikko Rajavuori
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
The rise of globally-oriented state ownership has emerged as a crucial issue across political, economic, and legal planes during the past decade. Contrary to the traditional approach where state ownership is viewed primarily through trade law, antitrust law, and corporate law, this article discusses the proliferating state shareholder power in relation to international human rights law. In particular, the article interrogates three recent U.N. human rights governance instruments by using narratives that highlight perils, potential, and specialty of state ownership in the emerging business and human rights agenda. It is argued that the U.N. instruments realize the changes in the …

Citizens Of Sinking Islands: Early Victims Of Climate Change, Erin Halstead
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This Note discusses the effects of climate change that threaten Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Specifically, with increasing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting in rising sea levels and higher frequency of extreme weather events, many citizens of SIDS are forced abandon their homelands, which are no longer livable. Although SIDS are some of the smallest contributors to GHG emissions, and therefore contribute the least to climate change, SIDS are some of the countries most heavily affected by the negative effects of climate change. The global community has an obligation to accommodate these displaced people, partially due to the significant …

Open Educational Resources
This tutorial was created to accompany the GIS Practicum, a day-long workshop offered by the Newman Library at Baruch College CUNY that introduces participants to geographic information systems (GIS) using the open source software QGIS. The practicum introduces GIS as a concept for envisioning information and as a tool for conducting geographic analyses and creating maps. Participants learn how to navigate a GIS interface, how to prepare layers and conduct a basic geographic analysis, and how to create thematic maps. This tutorial was written using QGIS version 2.14 "Essen", a cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) desktop GIS software package.

High-Resolution Spatial Distribution And Estimation Of Access To Improved Sanitation In Kenya, Peng Jia, John D. Anderson, Michael Leitner, Richard Rheingans
Faculty Publications
Background: Access to sanitation facilities is imperative in reducing the risk of multiple adverse health outcomes. A distinct disparity in sanitation exists among different wealth levels in many low-income countries, which may hinder the progress across each of the Millennium Development Goals. Methods: The surveyed households in 397 clusters from 2008-2009 Kenya Demographic and Health Surveys were divided into five wealth quintiles based on their national asset scores. A series of spatial analysis methods including excess risk, local spatial autocorrelation, and spatial interpolation were applied to observe disparities in coverage of improved sanitation among different wealth categories. The total number …

Firms around the world have been experiencing disruptive digital innovation. Such disruptions affect their business operations and models over time and geography. In this paper, we adopt Lucas and Goh’s (2009) framework of disruption response to examine how do firms achieve agility in responding to disruptive digital innovation. The framework draws on dynamic capability theory, disruptive innovation concept, organizational agility concept and organizational core rigidity concept. This research-in-progress paper aims to conduct an in-depth case study to understand how firms can be agile in responding to disruptive digital innovation. As a case study, this study adds to the growing corpus …

How Donald Mcgavran Has Impacted One Urban Church Plant And Indirectly Influenced Thousands Of Other Churches: An Analysis Of The Journey Church Of The City, Nelson Searcy, Matthew C. Easter
Great Commission Research Journal
This essay offers five specific principles from Donald McGavran that have directly influenced The Journey Church in New York City, San Francisco, and Boca Raton, Florida, and indirectly thousands of other churches (through the writing and coaching ministry of Nelson Searcy with Church Leader Insights). McGavran’s principles of missionary eyes, goal setting, assimilation, homogeneity, and a Great Commission focus have proven invaluable in this church plant and offer a similar value to other churches seeking to make a difference in their communities.
Decolonizing The Body: Breast Cancer And The Environment In Toxic Times, Cynthia L. Martin
Decolonizing The Body: Breast Cancer And The Environment In Toxic Times, Cynthia L. Martin
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation explores cultural narratives regarding the relationship between environmental toxins and breast cancer causation. It is not an analysis of current scientific research; grounded in Foucault’s theory of genealogy and archaeology, it evaluates cultural narratives on breast cancer causation that may be subsumed by the mainstream focus upon a cure for breast cancer, overlooking how people with breast cancer perceive illness causation, particularly as it relates to toxic exposure. Theories of place, space, and the neoliberal politics behind biotechnology support understanding the toxification of the human body as neocolonialism, and invite decolonizing methodologies as a means of understanding and …
A Policy Framework To Approach The Use Of Associated Petroleum Gas, Shay Banerjee, Perrine Toledano
A Policy Framework To Approach The Use Of Associated Petroleum Gas, Shay Banerjee, Perrine Toledano
Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications
CCSI developed "A Policy Framework to Approach the Use of Associated Petroleum Gas."
Associated Petroleum Gas (APG) is a form of natural gas that is found associated with petroleum fields. APG is often flared or vented for regulatory, economic or technical reasons. The flaring, however, is problematic from health and environmental perspectives. Moreover, flaring and venting APG wastes a valuable non-renewable resource that could be re-injected into the oil field or used for local and regional electricity generation.
This framework aims at providing guidance for regulators, policymakers, and industry leaders seeking to develop practical approaches to unlock the economic value …

Big Data And Intelligence: Applications, Human Capital, And Education, Michael Landon-Murray
Journal of Strategic Security
The potential for big data to contribute to the US intelligence mission goes beyond bulk collection, social media and counterterrorism. Applications will speak to a range of issues of major concern to intelligence agencies, from military operations to climate change to cyber security. There are challenges too: procurement lags, data stovepiping, separating signal from noise, sources and methods, a range of normative issues, and central to managing these challenges, human capital. These potential applications and challenges are discussed and a closer look at what data scientists do in the Intelligence Community (IC) is offered. Effectively filling the ranks of the …

Determination Of Evolutionary History Of Big Bluestem Populations Through Chloroplast Dna Analysis, Tej Man Tamang
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Andropogon gerardii Vitman (big bluestem) is one of the most dominant and widely distributed grasses of the North American prairie. It is widely used in restoration projects for the recovery of grassland ecosystems. A. gerardii demonstrates genetic and adaptive variation among populations across the prairie. With the objective to understand the evolutionary relationship between the A. gerardii populations, two noncoding chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) spacers (rpl32-trnL(UAG) and trnQ(UUG)-rps16) were studied. Similarly, genetic differentiation among the populations was also calculated based on the spacers. The trnQ(UUG)-rps16 spacer had more polymorphic sites than the rpl32-trnL(UAG) spacer. A phylogenetic tree based on combined cpDNA …

Waiting For A Place: At Gravedigger’S Pub, Jeffrey Alan Tolbert
Faculty Journal Articles
In this essay I consider how place can defeat our attempts to analyze it by become meaningful to us in ways that exceed the scope of our scholarly interests and methods. Discussing my fieldwork at a Dublin pub, I touch on the concepts of sense of place, nostalgia, and the importance of human relationships that form in places even in the context of what might be considered "failed" research.

Trans Reality: A Singaporean Malay Muslim In/As A Dance Documentary, Jun Zubillaga‐Pow
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The recent proliferation of the Hollywood dance film-Step Up (2006), Black Swan (2010) and School Dance (2014), for example-has triggered a regional interest in the genre. On the one hand, dance film festivals in Hong Kong (Jumping Frames) and Tokyo (Dance and Media Japan) to name but two Asian proponents of the genre have mushroomed. The interest in dance film in Singapore on the other hand suffered a short‐lived history with the programing of a dance film section within the Singapore Arts Festival for a mere three years between 2010 and 2012. The film that I will discuss in …

Introduction: Six‐Pack Twinks, Lipstick Dipsticks And Twice‐Touched Teases: Queering The Stereotype In Asian Cinema, James A. Wren
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Long before I began thinking about the issues of regionalism and regional identity, I found myself concerned with the mechanics of and the possibilities inherent to representation, first on the stage and later in film. I well recall having seen Miss Saigon on Broadway and, in spite of a number of exceptional performances, walked away with one very real concern: I found the character of Tran Van Dinh, The Engineer, disconcerting. True to his profession as the owner of "Dreamland," he was clearly a sleazy hustler, but that was not my concern. This ethnicity, as half-Vietnamese and half-French, …

Que Salgamos Más Adelante: Identity, Community, And The Desire For Development In Oaxaca, Mexico, Lori Klivak
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation examines how the desire to salir adelante, to improve oneself and one’s community, motivates townspeople to participate in development projects that promise to support and strengthen their pueblo. More specifically, I examine the material, social, and moral dimensions of progress and development, and the various ways indigenous people claim their place in the modern world. I am interested in the ways Zapotec people in Oaxaca, Mexico engage with development strategies and make them amenable to their own cultural practices and values. I am likewise interested in the extent to which the skills, habits, orientations and identities generated through …

Making Men In The City: Articulating Masculinity And Space In Urban India, Madhura Lohokare
Dissertations - ALL
In my dissertation, I illustrate the way in which processes in contemporary urban India structure the making/ unmaking of gendered identities for young men in a working class, scheduled caste neighborhood in the western Indian city of Pune. Present day Pune, an aspiring metropolis, presents a complex socio-spatial intersection of neoliberal processes and peculiar historical trajectories of caste exclusion; this dissertation seeks to highlight how socio-spatial dynamics of the city produce and sustain gendered identities and inequalities in Pune, a city hitherto neglected in academic research. Also, my focus on young men’s gendered identities speaks to a growing recognition that …
