Hill-Fort Sites And Tumuli In The Shkodra Plain Region Of Northern Albania: A Geospatial Perspective, Dora Jane Lambert
Hill-Fort Sites And Tumuli In The Shkodra Plain Region Of Northern Albania: A Geospatial Perspective, Dora Jane Lambert
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to determine the environmental and social factors that led to the shift of settlement patterning from agro-pastoral in the late Neolithic to hillort sites at the turn of the Early Bronze Age and why burial mounds (tumuli) were erected further than anticipated from corresponding hillort sites in the Shkodra Plain region in Northern Albania. Geospatial techniques were used to examine 168 tumuli and seven hillort sites. These were mapped to examine visibility, viewshed, slope, and potential prehistoric networks. Based on the landscape visibility GIS results, it was found that hillort sites and tumuli were …

Children's Book and Media Review
Lucy and Owen might never have talked if the city hadn’t experienced a long blackout, leaving them stuck together between the tenth and eleventh floors of their apartment building. After they are rescued, they wander the dark streets together until the power comes back on. Shortly after the blackout, Lucy moves to Edinburgh with her parents and Owen moves to the West. They both find other people they are interested in, but they still miss each other. They keep in touch with postcards and emails as they travel to different places around the world, waiting for the day when their …

Females And Footnotes: Excavating The Genre Of Eighteenth-Century Women’S Scholarly Verse, Ruth Knezevich
Females And Footnotes: Excavating The Genre Of Eighteenth-Century Women’S Scholarly Verse, Ruth Knezevich
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Throughout the eighteenth century, the genre of women’s poetry heavily annotated with editorializing commentary (a genre I term “scholarly verse”) became increasingly prevalent. Such poetry presents an ironic reversal of conventions of gender and authority by incorporating the literal margins of the page: the female voice commands the majority of the page, while the masculine voice of empiricism, authority, and scholarly reason is pushed to the margins. This essay offers a distant reading of the range of annotations women poets provided, in order to begin new conversations about the ways women’s poetry served as a site of and structure for …

From Common Core To Charter: The Economic Remedy To Nc Education, Hunter B. Winstead
From Common Core To Charter: The Economic Remedy To Nc Education, Hunter B. Winstead
Senior Honors Theses
Although numerous factors contribute to the decline of North Carolina’s economic prosperity, one of the most prevalent is the waste that occurs through the ineffective funding of education. In the last century, this system has become progressively centralized and bureaucratized which restricts the presence of diversity and hinders economic choice. The purest evidence of this movement is demonstrated through the state’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), an initiative designed to serve as a basis for federal entanglement in education. Proponents of CCSS claimed that the system would accomplish a variety of rigorous educational goals; however, none of …

Effect Of Coastal Erosion On Storm Surge: A Case Study In The Southern Coast Of Rhode Island, Alex Shaw, Mohammad Hashemi, Malcolm Spaulding, Bryan Oakley, Christopher Baxter
Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of shoreline retreat and dune erosion on coastal flooding in a case study located in the southern coast of Rhode Island, USA. Using an extensive dataset collected during 2011, an ADCIRC model was developed to simulate the propagation of storm surge in the coastal areas, including coastal inlets and ponds. A simplified methodology, based on the geological assessment of historical trends of the shoreline retreat and dune erosion in this area, was incorporated in the model to represent coastal erosion. The results showed that for extreme storms (e.g., a 100-year …

Who’S Shaping Who’S Opinions? Estimating The Degree Of Influence Exerted By Each Contact In A Social Network, Luis Eduardo Castro Abril
Open Access Dissertations
It is important in domains such as organizational behavior, politics, marketing, sociology, psychology, engineering, and economics to study how people that belong to a network form their opinions on a specific topic, how these opinions evolve, and how a consensus is reached. Researchers have mainly focused on estimating hidden opinions, identifying opinion trends, opinion leaders, consensus points, and the impact of the structure of the network on consensus. This dissertation proposes a model that (a) enables the tracking of the opinions of every member of a network, and (b) helps identifying who is influencing who’s opinions and to what degree …

The Microbiome Of The Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin, 1791): Temporal And Spatial Variation, Environmental Influences, And Its Impact On Host Physiology, Melissa L. Pierce
Doctoral Dissertations
Prokaryotic communities are ubiquitous in every environment on earth. In the oceans they are integral to a number of biogeochemical processes and form the base of marine food webs. Microbes have also coevolved with eukaryotes, aiding in a variety of host functions including digestion and nutrient absorption, development of the immune system, and protection against pathogens. The disruption of these microbial communities, especially in the gut, has been linked to altered health statuses and physiological functions in a range of hosts. The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), is a valuable economic and ecological resource in near-shore environments. As a …

Effects Of The Great Recession On Non-Metropolitan Illinois And The Midwest, Rachel L. Martin
Effects Of The Great Recession On Non-Metropolitan Illinois And The Midwest, Rachel L. Martin
Honors Capstones
This research examines the recovery of the employment rate in non-metropolitan Illinois and the Midwest after the Great Recession. Data from the 2010 U.S. Census as well as the Bureau of Labor Statistics was used to compile labor statistics as well as socioeconomic data for use in a linear regression model estimating change in employment. My hypothesis was that smaller, non-metropolitan areas of the country observed less growth in the employment change rate than larger areas. Though this hypothesis was not confirmed, other factors related to race and education appeared to play a role in the employment change rate. This …

Social Capital, Creativity And Cultural Vitality: Prioritization Factors For Sustainable Public Space Systems Design, Rachel D. Gilroy
Master's Theses
The real problems, needs and opportunities of urban neighborhoods are not being served by conventional models of urban planning and sustainable development. The city of New Haven, Connecticut will be studied to develop a framework for planning and design of the public realm (public space/place/landscape) which addresses urban neighborhood sustainability through a social lens, using a mixed-methods, transdisciplinarity research model. Geospatial data on social capital and cultural vitality indicators will be integrated with other sustainability indicators to create a quantitative analysis component. Development of a participatory design process to foster social bonding, creativity and sustainability inquiry will comprise a qualitative …
Education From Location, Yvonne Kordus
Education From Location, Yvonne Kordus
Senior Honors Theses
In order to have systems of education that will work to promote peoples and societies in regions all across the globe, educators must consider multiple aspects of the culture of each location. Educators should then tailor an education system to meet the desires, strengthen the advantages, and eliminate the challenges in each particular location. Factors of each culture that educators should take into account include resources available, participation in education, major difficulties in social arenas of society, advantages or disadvantages of the physical environment, health conditions, human interactions within the culture, desire to change or maintain societal or cultural norms, …
Spatial Variations In Personal Insolvency Choices: The Role Of Stigma And Social Capital, Pr Bishop
Spatial Variations In Personal Insolvency Choices: The Role Of Stigma And Social Capital, Pr Bishop
Plymouth Business School
This article offers an explanation for the wide spatial variations in choice of insolvency route by personal debtors across local authorities in England and Wales. It is argued that formal bankruptcy has a more negative impact on social capital through stigma effects than the alternative of Individual Voluntary Arrangements. Consequently, spatial variations in choices are related to variations in social capital. The hypotheses derived from this approach are tested through the use of spatial econometric models utilising data from England and Wales. The results provide support for a positive link between variables related to social capital (age, mobility and home …
The Impact Of Organic Farms: Biodiversity And Climate Change Resilience In The Southeast, Josie Newton
The Impact Of Organic Farms: Biodiversity And Climate Change Resilience In The Southeast, Josie Newton
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
Resilience to climate change serves as an indicator of the effectiveness of organic farming practices. Resilience means that an area is able to return to a stable state after a disturbance. In this context, it means that the area is able to function regularly even in the face of climate change, an instance that affects species health and biodiversity. By mapping the locations of organic farms across the southeastern United States along with the resilience scores of areas as evaluated by The Nature Conservancy and comparing this map to farm locations and biodiversity measures, we are able to determine the …
Mapping The Impact Of Intensive Rotational Grazing On Soil Fertility Over Time On Greenbrier Farms In Pickens County, South Carolina, Emily Kirby
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
Intensive rotational grazing (IRG) is a management technique that involves a more intentional management approach which includes increased paddock numbers, shorter grazing periods, larger livestock presence per acre, and longer periods of rest on pastures. Potential advantages of this management technique include improved forage quality, greater yield, decreased erosion, stable production during adverse growing condition, and improved soil fertility. This study collects and analyzes data to understand the impact of rotational grazing on soil fertility as measured by SOC (soil organic carbon) and SON (soil organic nitrogen) on Greenbrier Farms in Easley, South Carolina. This study analyzes the transition from …

This project explores the LGBTQ+ Affirming Locations of Greenville county. An LGBTQ+ affirming location is best summarized by this response, “It's a comfortable and welcoming place where it doesn't only feel like LGBT+ people are just being tolerated”. This response was taken from a survey I sent out to LGBTQ+ Groups in the Greenville area and shows why it is important to identify locations in the Greenville county area. With people coming out and looking for support it is important for to know where they will not be discriminated against. The goal is to make a viewable map that can …

Spatial Distribution Of High Obesity Rates In South Carolina, Tom Bennett
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
In 2015, the rate of adult obesity in South Carolina was nearly 32%, which places South Carolina as the 13th worst state when it comes to the prevalence of adult obesity. Along with overall rates of adult obesity, South Carolina has the 8th highest high school student obesity rate with 16.3% of high school students being obese. These statistics are troubling because obesity is a primary cause of Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other negative health effects. These health care issues then affect supply and demand for health care, advertising, physical exercise, and many other market segments, …
Habitat Quality Modeling For Bird Species At Furman University, Emma Cook
Habitat Quality Modeling For Bird Species At Furman University, Emma Cook
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
In rapidly urbanizing areas, such as Greenville County in Upstate South Carolina, it is important to study habitat use and quality across land cover types in order to maximize conservation. Habitat fragmentation is a threat to many species of birds in areas with increasing development, especially those species that utilize larger forest patches for nesting and foraging. While land cover type and patch size are extremely important factors in determining habitat quality for birds, recent research has shown that the matrix of surrounding landscape proves to be very important as well. The landscape matrix, sometimes called landscape mosaic, considers the …
Mapping Trends In Bike Theft On Furman Campus From 2001 To 2016, Tindall Ouverson
Mapping Trends In Bike Theft On Furman Campus From 2001 To 2016, Tindall Ouverson
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
The Furman University Police Department categorizes bike thefts as "bike larcenies" in their reporting system. However, most bike thefts on a college campus are not for monetary gain but as a means of transportation for opportunistic students. Though the goal of student bike thieves may be to get to class on time, the United States Department of Justice classifies them as "joyriders". Campus bike theft is a concern because it results in a monetary loss for students.

Soundscape Mapping: Spatial Variability Of Sound At Furman University, Alec Schindler
Earth and Environmental Sciences Presentations
Looking at the entire soundscape and studying its spatial variability can often give us important information about the health of the ecosystem. However, most previous studies only measure sound intensity, and are therefore limited in their depiction of the soundscape. Another tool for mapping soundscapes is SPreAD-GIS. This tool models sound propagation in an area. However, previous studies have only used it to evaluate the effects of noise pollution, but not applied it towards depicting the soundscape as a whole. I mapped the soundscape of Furman University’s campus using sound intensity as well as many different soundscape indices in order …

The recent City Club report on bicycling provided an opportunity to collect and analyze a number of data sets including the new Hawthorne Bridge data. One question is where Portland bicycling on the logistic curve -- a common tool for judging the maturity of a developing product or activity. Logistic curves are used for marketing, for epidemiology, and even for visits to Indian owned casinos. The preliminary evidence is that we are reaching the horizontal area of the curve. Additional evidence Our further research into future policies indicates a shift to bicycle boulevards in order to attract more risk averse …
Experience And Expression, Jay Michael Hanes, Eleanor Weisman
Experience And Expression, Jay Michael Hanes, Eleanor Weisman
Education and Culture
Two artist-educators analyzed their creative process informed by John Dewey’s concepts regarding the act of expression. The essay interweaves a description of their performance piece with a discussion of conceptual processes, including intermediality and collaboration as crucial in art making, learning, and pedagogical efficacy. Both the creation of the piece and the written analysis were guided by concepts Dewey identified as compression, impulsion, and expression. The authors argue that experience and expression exemplify creative learning and are transferable to knowledge construction in all areas of inquiry. Throughout an aesthetic learning process, deep reflection plays an essential role with interpretation and …
