Qualitative Health Research Involving Indigenous Peoples: Culturally Appropriate Data Collection Methods, Amy L. Wright, Olive Wahoush, Marilyn Ballantyne, Chelsea Gabel, Susan M. Jack Dec 2016

Qualitative Health Research Involving Indigenous Peoples: Culturally Appropriate Data Collection Methods, Amy L. Wright, Olive Wahoush, Marilyn Ballantyne, Chelsea Gabel, Susan M. Jack

The Qualitative Report

Historically, health research involving Indigenous peoples has been fraught with problems, including researchers not addressing Indigenous research priorities and then subsequently often failing to utilize culturally appropriate methods. Given this historical precedence, some Indigenous populations may be reluctant to participate in research projects. In response to these concerns, the Government of Canada has developed the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS2): Research Involving the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples of Canada, which stipulates the requirements for research collaborations with Indigenous communities. Utilizing this policy as an ethical standard for research practices, this paper describes, critiques and synthesizes the literature on culturally …

Value Creation And Capture In Entrepreneurial Organizations, Wojciech Dyduch Dec 2016

Value Creation And Capture In Entrepreneurial Organizations, Wojciech Dyduch

European Management Studies

Topical literature focuses on the quest for relations among innovativeness, entrepreneurship, and performance in the functioning of an organization. The paper expands on such dependencies through the assumption that the main outcome of stimulating entrepreneurship in the organization is the creation of value. In and of itself, innovativeness does not create value. It is only when it is commercialized through incorporation of the processes of strategic entrepreneurship that this happens. Moreover, it is not only the level of the value generated by the company that is important, but also what part it can retain or capture. The paper discusses processes …

Movements Between Entrepreneurship And Paid Employment: Experiences Of Polish Entrepreneurs In The International Context, Piotr Zientara, Anna Maria Nikodemska-Wołowik

European Management Studies

The present paper, drawing on qualitative interviews with Polish former and current entrepreneurs based in the Opole region focuses on their experiences as it relates to movements from wage employment to entrepreneurship and from entrepreneurship to wage employment. In so doing, it seeks to find out why they decided to become entrepreneurs or to return to paid employment, what they experience in their new occupations, and how their prior experiences influence the way they run their businesses or work as employees. The interview findings suggest that people become entrepreneurs because they seek to earn more, be autonomous, or to test …

Chokho Pani: An Interface Between Religion And Environment In Darjeeling, Mahendra P. Lama, Roshan P. Rai Mr. Dec 2016

Chokho Pani: An Interface Between Religion And Environment In Darjeeling, Mahendra P. Lama, Roshan P. Rai Mr.

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This case study examines the relationship between everyday religion and resource management in the context of water resources in Darjeeling, India. It uses the notion and practice of chokho pani (pure and/or sacred water) as an interface between popular religious practices and the attempt to conserve water in Darjeeling township. Although the link between religion and environmental resource management is widely recognized, it remains a critical area of inquiry in the Himalaya. The complexity of water's social importance is vividly evident in Darjeeling. The town presents a rapidly urbanizing landscape with a diversity of peoples dependent upon a variety of …

Water Connection: Everyday Religion And Environments In Kathmandu Valley, Mukta S. Tamang Dec 2016

Water Connection: Everyday Religion And Environments In Kathmandu Valley, Mukta S. Tamang

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This case study aims to explore the relationship between ‘everyday religion’ and prospects for urban sustainability in the context of on-going changes -in Kathmandu. It argues that everyday religion plays a role in furnishing the incentive for urban residents to sustainably manage ‘culturalized nature’ in the city. In particular, I examine water, the practices surrounding its use, and how these practices connect various social realms. I suggest that water in Kathmandu valley plays an important role as a connector encompassing life and death, religion and environment, as well as politics and development.

Beyond Contradiction: Sacred-Profane Waters And The Dialectics Of Everyday Religion, Georgina Drew Dec 2016

Beyond Contradiction: Sacred-Profane Waters And The Dialectics Of Everyday Religion, Georgina Drew

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Studies of the relationship between religion and ecology are either highly enthusiastic about the ways that religious belief can motivate sound resource management or skeptical of the connection. Using an everyday religion approach, this text takes a middle ground to show that resources are variously interpreted in daily life and that religious orientations, while potentially supportive of environmentally sound action, are but one source of influence. Drawing from fieldwork, the discussion employs practice theory to look at how water resources in a Himalayan township are understood and the ways that notions of responsibility for sacred and profane waters are changing. …

New Languages Of Schooling: Ethnicity, Education And Equality In Nepal, Uma Pradhan Dec 2016

New Languages Of Schooling: Ethnicity, Education And Equality In Nepal, Uma Pradhan

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Mother-tongue education has remained a controversial issue in Nepal. Scholars, activists and policy-makers have, on the one hand, favored mother-tongue education from the standpoint of social justice. Against these views, others have identified this as predominantly groupist in its orientation and not helpful in an imagination of a unified national community. Taking this contention as a point of inquiry, this paper aims to explore the contested space of mother-tongue education to understand the ways in which people position themselves within the polarizing debates of ethnicity-based claims on education in Nepal. Drawing from the ethnographic fieldwork in mother-tongue education school, in …

The Rapture Of Being Alive: Mourning, Narrative, And Communicative Ritual In The Digital Age, Marjorie Merideth Drinan Dec 2016

The Rapture Of Being Alive: Mourning, Narrative, And Communicative Ritual In The Digital Age, Marjorie Merideth Drinan

Theses - ALL

Conversations have an afterlife. But what if the afterlife could have conversations? In that metaphorical space, the author explores how technology and design will engender new communicative rituals and tools of mourning as the semiotics of traditional gravescapes begin to diffuse. This pivot will occur in tandem with the rise of alternative forms of body disposition and growing environmental stewardship in response to increased urbanization and notions of intergenerational equity. Digital space, the postmodern hearth of an ever individualized and fractured society, will enable a plurality of mourning as the idea of legacy is deconstructed within the framework of transhumanism …

Biopolarity: Coral Scientists Between Hope And Despair, Irus Braverman Dec 2016

Biopolarity: Coral Scientists Between Hope And Despair, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

Biopolarity draws on extensive interviews with dozens of coral scientists and on my observations of the international coral reef symposium in Hawaii on June 2016 to document the oscillation of coral scientists between hope and despair in their imaginations of coral futures. At one extreme of the oscillation are catastrophic predictions of the death of corals by the mid-21st century. In this despondent narrative, corals are getting fried and nothing short of an abrupt (and unlikely) shift in how humans use fossil fuels will save them. The pessimistic trajectory of this swing of the pendulum comes replete with daunting maps, …

Controls On The Early Holocene Collapse Of The Bothnian Sea Ice Stream, Cc Clason, Sl Greenwood, N Selmes, Jm Lea, Et Al Dec 2016

Controls On The Early Holocene Collapse Of The Bothnian Sea Ice Stream, Cc Clason, Sl Greenwood, N Selmes, Jm Lea, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

New high‐resolution multibeam data in the Gulf of Bothnia reveal for the first time the subglacial environment of a Bothnian Sea Ice Stream. The geomorphological record suggests that increased meltwater production may have been important in driving rapid retreat of Bothnian Sea Ice during deglaciation. Here we apply a well‐established, one‐dimensional flow line model to simulate ice flow through the Gulf of Bothnia and investigate controls on retreat of the ice stream during the post‐Younger Dryas deglaciation of the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet. The relative influence of atmospheric and marine forcings are investigated, with the modeled ice stream exhibiting much greater …

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of Pennsylvanian Sandstone Units In The Mature Dudley Oil Field, Illinois, Usa, Jordan M. Martin, David H. Malone

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

The purpose of this research is to better understand the Dudley Pool, a small, mature oil field in the Illinois Basin, USA by incorporating old geologic and geophysical data into modern petrophysical modeling software. The research focused on three-dimensional subsurface modeling of stratigraphy, structure, and porosity, to establish a more thorough understanding of oil occurrence at the Dudley Pool. This research also discusses the efficacy of three-dimensional modeling as an effective tool for evaluating, and potentially modifying, production efforts in mature petroleum fields with limited and/or poor-quality data. The modeling and calculations were completed using Petrel. Well information from all …

Patchiness Of Ciliate Communities Sampled At Varying Spatial Scales Along The New England Shelf, Jean-David Grattepanche, George B. Mcmanus, Laura A. Katz Dec 2016

Patchiness Of Ciliate Communities Sampled At Varying Spatial Scales Along The New England Shelf, Jean-David Grattepanche, George B. Mcmanus, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Although protists (microbial eukaryotes) provide an important link between bacteria and Metazoa in food webs, we do not yet have a clear understanding of the spatial scales on which protist diversity varies. Here, we use a combination of DNA fingerprinting (denaturant gradient gel electrophoresis or DGGE) and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) to assess the ciliate community in the class Spirotrichea at varying scales of 1–3 km sampled in three locations separated by at least 25 km—offshore, midshelf and inshore—along the New England shelf. Analyses of both abundant community (DGGE) and the total community (HTS) members reveal that: 1) ciliate communities are …

Pan‐Arctic River Discharge: Prioritizing Monitoring Of Future Climate Change Hot Spots, Arvid Bring, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Richard B. Lammers Dec 2016

Pan‐Arctic River Discharge: Prioritizing Monitoring Of Future Climate Change Hot Spots, Arvid Bring, Alexander I. Shiklomanov, Richard B. Lammers

Faculty Publications

The Arctic freshwater cycle is changing rapidly, which will require adequate monitoring of river flows to detect, observe, and understand changes and provide adaptation information. There has, however, been little detail about where the greatest flow changes are projected, and where monitoring therefore may need to be strengthened. In this study, we used a set of recent climate model runs and an advanced macro‐scale hydrological model to analyze how flows across the continental pan‐Arctic are projected to change and where the climate models agree on significant changes. We also developed a method to identify where monitoring stations should be placed …

Cogbill, Sydne Record, Christopher J. Paciorek, Stephen T. Jackson, Michael C. Dietze, Andria Dawson, Jaclyn Hatala Matthes, Jason S. Mclachlan, John W. Williams

Dartmouth Scholarship

EuroAmerican land-use and its legacies have transformed forest structure and composition across the United States (US). More accurate reconstructions of historical states are critical to understanding the processes governing past, current, and future forest dynamics. Here we present new gridded (8x8km) reconstructions of pre-settlement (1800s) forest composition and structure from the upper Midwestern US (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and most of Michigan), using 19th Century Public Land Survey System (PLSS), with estimates of relative composition, above-ground biomass, stem density, and basal area for 28 tree types. This mapping is more robust than past efforts, using spatially varying correction factors to accommodate sampling …

Relationships Between Information Technology Skills And Performance Evaluation Scores Of Mississippi State University Extension Service Agents, James R. Loper

Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted to see if the level of use, expertise, and problem solving abilities using information technology among Mississippi State University Extension agents was positively correlated with the performance quality of the agent as measured in the Mississippi State University Extension Service agent evaluation system. A second purpose was to examine how well agents self-assess their technology skills. Lastly, the study attempted to determine if there was a set of factors (including information technology skills) that explained a substantial portion of the variation in performance evaluation scores. The results showed that the Mississippi State University Extension agent evaluation …

Natural Population Dynamics Of Rock Iguanas In The Bahama Archipelago, Giuliano Colosimo Dec 2016

Natural Population Dynamics Of Rock Iguanas In The Bahama Archipelago, Giuliano Colosimo

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding whether groups of individuals represent a single panmictic gene pool, or multiple genetically structured populations across a species range should aid in predicting whether specific conservation strategies would be more or less effective for species preservation. Further, contrasting the population structures of multiple coexisting taxa could foster an even deeper understanding of evolutionary divergence among demes and potentially even suggest local adaptation in the form of tight coevolutionary relationships. Finally, the analysis of population dynamics within small and isolated populations could improve our understanding of the relative importance that different evolutionary mechanisms have in predicting population persistence in the …

Utilization Of Outdoor Resources To Enhance Understanding Of Geosciences, Sarah Radencic Lalk Dec 2016

Utilization Of Outdoor Resources To Enhance Understanding Of Geosciences, Sarah Radencic Lalk

Theses and Dissertations

Societal awareness and general understanding of the diversity of geosciences environments and phenomena across regions is vital. The primary method to obtain information about geosciences is through mass media. However, there is little coverage of geosciences information and the public may not trust it because of low geosciences awareness. Geosciences are rarely included as part of K-12 curricula and are optional at the collegiate level, contributing to the public deficiency regarding awareness and understanding of the geosciences. This research study investigated methods utilizing outdoor resources in an effort to increase region-specific understanding and awareness of geosciences among diverse groups. A …

Mental Illness In Starkville, Ms: A Cultural Consensus Analysis Of The Public Conceptions Of Mental Illness, Curtis Andrew Kennett Dec 2016

Mental Illness In Starkville, Ms: A Cultural Consensus Analysis Of The Public Conceptions Of Mental Illness, Curtis Andrew Kennett

Theses and Dissertations

Mental illness is a complex phenomenon that is social and psychological as well as biological. But since the creation of the DSM-III in the 1980s, the landscape of mental health research and treatment in the United States has been heavily influenced by the biomedical model. The thoughts and beliefs of the lay public about mental illness are often ignored despite the push for greater cultural understanding among biomedical professionals. This disconnect, coupled with the poor mental health infrastructure, has left Mississippi with an inadequate ability to help Mississippians address mental illness. This research uses cognitive anthropological methods and biocultural theory …
