Forgotten Fashions: Feather Pelerines Of The Nineteenth Century, Anna Rose Keefe Jan 2016

Forgotten Fashions: Feather Pelerines Of The Nineteenth Century, Anna Rose Keefe

Open Access Master's Theses

Feather pelerine capes are featured in publications as collection highlights of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and Historic New England and described as superlative examples of the nineteenth century’s fascination with exotic fauna and the natural world. Made from three-quarter circles of undyed cotton, the capes are lined with down and covered in peacock, pheasant, and fowl feathers arranged in geometric and floral patterns. All the text surrounding feather pelerines is clear about one thing: there is no scholarly consensus on where these capes came from or who made them.

The aim of my research is to …

The Integration Of Internal And External Training Load Metrics In Hurling, Shane Malone, Dominic Doran, Ibrahim Akubat Ibrahim Akubat, Kieran Collins Jan 2016

The Integration Of Internal And External Training Load Metrics In Hurling, Shane Malone, Dominic Doran, Ibrahim Akubat Ibrahim Akubat, Kieran Collins

Articles

The current study aimed to assess the relationship between the hurling player’s fitness profile and integrated training load (TL) metrics. Twenty-five hurling players performed treadmill testing for VO2max, the speed at blood lactate concentrations of 2 mmol•L-1 (vLT) and 4 mmol•L-1 (vOBLA) and the heart rate-blood lactate profile for calculation of individual training impulse (iTRIMP). The total distance (TD; m), high speed distance (HSD; m) and sprint distance (SD; m) covered were measured using GPS technology (4-Hz, VX Sport, Lower Hutt, New Zealand) which allowed for the measurement of the external TL. The external TL was divided by the internal …

Articles

Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) causes chronic opportunistic lung infections in people with cystic fibrosis (CF) resulting in a gradual lung function decline and, ultimately, patient death. Bcc is a complex of eighteen species and is rarely eradicated once a patient is colonised, therefore vaccination may represent a better therapeutic option. We developed a new proteomics approach to identify bacterial proteins that are involved in attachment of Bcc to lung epithelial cells. Fourteen proteins were reproducibly identified by 2-DE from four Bcc strains, representative of two Bcc species: B. cenocepacia, the most virulent and B. multivorans, the most frequently acquired. Seven …

Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Performance In Subelite Gaelic Football Players From Under Thirteen To Senior Age Groups, Mark Roe, Shane Malone Jan 2016

Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Performance In Subelite Gaelic Football Players From Under Thirteen To Senior Age Groups, Mark Roe, Shane Malone

Articles

Gaelic football is indigenous to Ireland and has similar locomotion profiles to soccer and Australian Football. Given the increasing attention on long-term player development, investigations into age-related variation in Yo-YoIR1 performance may provide useful information in talent identification, programme design, and player monitoring. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate Yo-YoIR1 performance across Gaelic football age groups. Male participants (n = 355) were recruited from division one, Gaelic football teams. Participants were allocated to one of seven groups according to respective age groups from under 13 (U13), under 14, under 15 (U15), under 16 (U16), minor, under 21 …

Genomic Imbalances In Peripheral Blood Confirm The Diagnosis Of Myelodysplastic Syndrome In A Patient Presenting With Non-Immune Hemolytic Anemia, Mohammad Faizan Zahid, Nadia Khan, Jianming Pei, Joseph R. Testa, Essel Dulaimi Jan 2016

Genomic Imbalances In Peripheral Blood Confirm The Diagnosis Of Myelodysplastic Syndrome In A Patient Presenting With Non-Immune Hemolytic Anemia, Mohammad Faizan Zahid, Nadia Khan, Jianming Pei, Joseph R. Testa, Essel Dulaimi

Medical College Documents

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a clonal stem-cell disorder characterized by dyshematopoiesis. We report a patient who presented with cytopenias and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Chromosome microarray analysis (CMA), using single nucleotide polymorphism arrays, on peripheral blood revealed genomic imbalances indicative of MDS, which was confirmed by bone marrow examination. This report highlights the importance of suspecting MDS in patients with cytopenias and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. CMA of peripheral blood may assist in the preliminary diagnosis of MDS, representing a comparatively less invasive diagnostic procedure and may aid bone marrow evaluation when an aspirate sample is insufficient for conventional cytogenetic analysis.

International Procurement Developments In 2015: Structural Reforms To International Procurement Laws, Christopher R. Yukins Jan 2016

International Procurement Developments In 2015: Structural Reforms To International Procurement Laws, Christopher R. Yukins

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The year 2015 saw major structural changes to international procurement rules -- including (1) a proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement which will impact procurement, and important shifts in Canada’s laws regarding contractor debarment and exclusion (discussed here by Brenda Swick), (2) European procurement laws which favor open, multilateral negotiations (Hans-Joachim Priess), and (2) new, more liberal procurement policies at the World Bank (Christopher Yukins) -- all of which are likely to help open procurement markets around the world. This article, prepared for presentation at the February 2016 Thomson-Reuters Year in Review conference in Washington, D.C., surveys these developments and …

Second Report On Crimes Against Humanity, Sean D. Murphy

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In July 2014, the U.N. International Law Commission placed the topic “Crimes against humanity” on its current program of work and appointed a Special Rapporteur. According to the topic proposal, the objective of the Commission is to draft articles for what could become a Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Humanity.

In July 2015, based on the Special Rapporteur’s First Report, the Commission provisionally adopted the first four draft articles with commentary. In this Second Report, which will be debated by the Commission during the summer of 2016, the Special Rapporteur proposes an additional six draft articles, …

How The Creation Of Appellate Courts In England And The United States Limited Judicial Comment On Evidence To The Jury, Renée Lettow Lerner Jan 2016

How The Creation Of Appellate Courts In England And The United States Limited Judicial Comment On Evidence To The Jury, Renée Lettow Lerner

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The practice of judicial comment on the evidence has traditionally been the main form of jury control. Previous scholarly work has focused on the loss of the power in state courts, and has attributed the decline of judicial comment to a strict separation of functions between judge and jury and to regional differences in legal culture. This article examines two jurisdictions in which the power of comment long remained strong, at least in theory: the High Court of England, with its predecessors, and the federal courts in the United States. In both jurisdictions, judicial power to comment has been limited …

Following the substantive harmonization in Regulation (EC) no. 1/2003, the European Commission has started more recently to focus on the harmonization of procedure and sanctions, and in January 2016, the European Parliament called for penalties against natural persons. This special issue looks at the current state of individual sanctions on the EU Member State level, examines from a comparative perspective the institutional challenges which these individual sanctions present, especially for leniency programmes, and discusses the pros and cons of introducing further individual, in particular criminal sanctions in Europe. It examines the experience with criminal sanctions in France, Germany, the United …

On The Evolution Of Property Ownership Among Former Slaves, Newly Freedmen, Eleanor Marie Brown Jan 2016

On The Evolution Of Property Ownership Among Former Slaves, Newly Freedmen, Eleanor Marie Brown

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

One might think of the slave property system of provision grounds (or “provisioning”) in the West Indies as a happy coalition of interests between planters (who wanted to provide slaves incentives to feed themselves), Westminster (who wanted well-fed slaves to ensure the productivity of the sugar sector, a hefty tax contributor to the Exchequer), and slaves (who saw the advantages of a system which ensured that they were fed and encouraged private enterprise). Yet while this was generally true, notably, not all members of the plantocracy viewed these developments as positive. An outspoken minority feared that the roots of the …

Introduction. A New Field: Comparative Law And Regulation, Francesca Bignami Jan 2016

Introduction. A New Field: Comparative Law And Regulation, Francesca Bignami

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The contemporary regulatory process is global. Markets and the problems they generate—consumer privacy, chemicals safety, and many others—cross borders and so too do regulatory efforts to address those problems. The process, however, by which national and international jurisdictions decide common regulatory problems defies the traditional mold of hierarchical state law. There is no world government with the power to impose a single set of principles and procedures on the multiple jurisdictions, and therefore the global regulatory process is characterized as much by diversity and discord as it is by coordination and convergence.

The new field of comparative law and regulation …

Regulation And The Courts: Judicial Review In Comparative Perspective, Francesca Bignami Jan 2016

Regulation And The Courts: Judicial Review In Comparative Perspective, Francesca Bignami

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

After a historical survey of the literature, this chapter puts forward a new analytical scheme to capture variation in comparative judicial review. The earliest, and still relevant, classification developed in the scholarly literature turns on the difference between judicial review of administrative action by the ordinary courts in the English common law and by a special body (Conseil d’Etat) connected to the executive branch in the French droit administratif. This is followed chronologically by the contrast that has been drawn by Robert Kagan and public-choice scholars between the litigious and formal American system of law and public policy and the …

Guns, Bird Feathers, And Overcriminalization: Why Courts Should Take The Second Amendment Seriously, Robert J. Cottrol, George Mocsary

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Who should the state punish? Why? Should punishment be proportional? This article surveys, in the context of these fundamental criminal-law questions, the Second Amendment’s constitutional history and jurisprudence. A vast body of evidence shows that the framers of both the Second and Fourteenth Amendments intended to protect the individual’s right to keep and carry arms for protection against both governmental and private aggression.

Yet courts, unwilling to allow disfavored groups the means of self-defense, or fearing being blamed for criminal firearm activity, have failed to enforce the right to bear arms to any meaningful extent. After the Civil War, the …

Using The Student-Edited Law Review To Teach Critical Professional Skills, Karen Thornton Jan 2016

Using The Student-Edited Law Review To Teach Critical Professional Skills, Karen Thornton

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

At a time when law schools are being urged to add experiential learning opportunities to their curricula, law reviews may have been overlooked because the need is so obvious. Producing a journal is a professional endeavor requiring leadership by student editors who are in the process of forging their professional identity. Law schools have a responsibility to teach critical professional skills as part of the pedagogy to shape future lawyers. This article summarizes the need for law schools to provide experiential learning opportunities, unpacks the criticism faculty authors have heaped on student-led law reviews, and the describes a symposium-style training …

The Illegality Defence In Corporate Law Claims Against Directors And Officers, Wai Yee Wan Jan 2016

The Illegality Defence In Corporate Law Claims Against Directors And Officers, Wai Yee Wan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

If a company incurs substantial fines or other pecuniary losses as a result of its unlawful conduct, can the company obtain an indemnity from its director/officer for having caused the company to incur such fines and losses? In particular, can the director/officer utilise the defence of illegality, notwithstanding that he has breached his duties owed to the company? The illegality defence, which raises the twin issues of the relationship between the unlawful act to the corporate claim and the attribution of the unlawful act to the company, has been the subject of detailed analysis recently in England, Singapore and Hong …

Utilising Voice Recognition Software To Improve Reading Fluency Of Struggling Adolescent Readers, Peter Count Jan 2016

Utilising Voice Recognition Software To Improve Reading Fluency Of Struggling Adolescent Readers, Peter Count

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Approximately 15-20% of secondary students in Australia experience reading difficulties. For many, the cognitive effort required to decode words or the lack of automaticity in the elements that contribute to fluent reading prevents effective reading comprehension. Because reading comprehension is of critical importance across the curriculum, students with difficulties in this area are at significant academic risk.

One effective method of improving reading fluency is ‘repeated readings’ (NICHHD, 2000). The purpose of this study was to examine whether the use of repeated readings delivered via a home-based program employing voice recognition software (VRS) could improve the reading fluency and self-perception …

Interfacing Of Neuromorphic Vision, Auditory And Olfactory Sensors With Digital Neuromorphic Circuits, Anup Vanarse Jan 2016

Interfacing Of Neuromorphic Vision, Auditory And Olfactory Sensors With Digital Neuromorphic Circuits, Anup Vanarse

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The conventional Von Neumann architecture imposes strict constraints on the development of intelligent adaptive systems. The requirements of substantial computing power to process and analyse complex data make such an approach impractical to be used in implementing smart systems.

Neuromorphic engineering has produced promising results in applications such as electronic sensing, networking architectures and complex data processing. This interdisciplinary field takes inspiration from neurobiological architecture and emulates these characteristics using analogue Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI). The unconventional approach of exploiting the non-linear current characteristics of transistors has aided in the development of low-power adaptive systems that can be implemented …

Actor Training And Emotions: Finding A Balance, Susan Leith Taylor Jan 2016

Actor Training And Emotions: Finding A Balance, Susan Leith Taylor

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Actor training is a challenging and personally confronting course of study during which students can undergo intense emotional upheaval. Australian conservatoires and vocational drama schools teach acting students to access and expand their emotional range as part of their professional skill repertoire. A variety of methods and techniques are used to assist and enable them to accomplish this. Sometimes, student actors are requested to tap into personal memories, which can have severe emotional repercussions. Many exercises in other areas of training can also be very emotionally confronting. Finding a balance between having emotions available for use in acting work and …
