Associating Mathematics To Its History: Connecting The Mathematics We Teach To Its Past, Joseph M. Furner, Ernest A. Brewer Dec 2016

Associating Mathematics To Its History: Connecting The Mathematics We Teach To Its Past, Joseph M. Furner, Ernest A. Brewer

Transformations

Across the USA and around the world now, globalization has taken a strong hold. The purpose of this paper is to explore the historical considerations that can be incorporated in the teaching of mathematics. The paper will also provide suggestions for teaching math by interweaving historical elements into the mathematics instruction. Teachers should strive to bridge the cultural and historical gap among all students by incorporating innovative ideas as well as historical and cultural connections into their teaching so to foster understanding, appreciation, and tolerance for the richness inherent in diversity and a sound understanding of mathematics and appreciation for …

Using Technology And Media-Rich Platforms To Help Teach The Pythagorean Theorem, Hui Fang Huang Su, Denise Gates, Janice Haramis, Farrah Bell, Claude Manigat, Kristin Hierpe, Lourivaldo Da Silva

Transformations

The history of mathematics is quite extensive, dating back to ancient times and elapsing several centuries. Many great mathematicians, philosophers, scientists, and scholars have contributed to mathematics on the subject we see today. For the purpose of this research project, we have chosen to highlight the great mathematician Pythagoras and his famous Pythagorean Theorem. We investigate the history of the Pythagorean Theorem, relationships among Pythagorean numbers, and unusual proofs of the Theorem. This paper provides a suggestive lesson plan, activity, and presentation for classroom use.

Publications and Research

In this day and age of crises – financial, enrollment,

even scandal – among institutions of higher education,

image “management” has become a tool to help

some institutions stay afloat. Countless colleges and

universities have resorted to spending money on

glossy brochures, billboards and even on expensive

TV airtime.

The images they portray are usually one of happy

and attractive students having fun on campus, enjoying

athletic events and amenities that used to be more

likely to be found at country clubs than colleges. The

quality of education is almost an afterthought. The

name of the institution is being sold …

The one or more electrical conductors are disposed on the substrate, oriented, and buried within the dissipative medium. The electrical conductors are also adapted to radiate signals at a frequency in half-space adjacent to the dissipative medium. The adaptation includes a beamwidth state for one or more of the electrical conductors based at least in part on the relative permittivity of …

Generation Of Germ-Free /Ciona Intestinalis For Studies Of Gut-Microbe Interactions, Brittany A Leigh, Assunta Liberti, Larry J Dishaw Dec 2016

Generation Of Germ-Free /Ciona Intestinalis For Studies Of Gut-Microbe Interactions, Brittany A Leigh, Assunta Liberti, Larry J Dishaw

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Microbes associate with animal hosts, often providing shelter in a nutrient-rich environment. The gut, however, can be a harsh environment with members of the microbiome settling in distinct niches resulting in more stable, adherent biofilms. These diverse communities can provide orders of magnitude more gene products than the host genome; selection and maintenance of a functionally relevant and useful microbiome is now recognized to be an essential component of homeostasis. Germ-free (GF) model systems allow dissection of host-microbe interactions in a simple and direct way where each member of the symbiosis can be studied in isolation. In addition, because immune …

Shamans, Wives, Families: An Isoseño Case Considered Using Turner On Kayapo Dominance And Beauty, Kathleen B. Lowrey

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

In this essay I describe what I have seen elapse over twenty years in the lives (and sometimes deaths) of two shamans and their respective wives in Isoso, an indigenous community of Guarani-speaking people in the Bolivian Chaco. These shamans’ two different kinds of shamanic practice, their two different sorts of marriage, and the two different life-trajectories of their wives resonate with the dual nature of Isoso itself and its historical constitution. The reproduction of a hierarchical Arawakan way of life through feminine submission to a Guarani “egalitarianism” of masculine dominance has been, I suspect, a dynamic of long standing …

Illusion And Value, Or Marcel Mauss On Alienability And Inalienability, Marcos Lanna Dec 2016

Illusion And Value, Or Marcel Mauss On Alienability And Inalienability, Marcos Lanna

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This article reexamines Marcel Mauss’s The Gift and suggests that a certain degree not only of alienability and inalienability but also of illusion is a condition for communication and social organization. Even if there is not an explicit concept of illusion in Mauss’s works, the paper points out that it is present in those of Claude Lévi-Strauss, and that both Mauss’ and Lévi-Strauss’ perspectives can be fruitfully contrasted to Karl Marx’s theory of alienation. Starting from Mauss, this paper offers an exploration of logical and historical continuities between the notions of the gift and of commodities, arguing that they are …

Shifting Gears In The Classroom—Movement Towardpersonalized Learning And Competency-Based Education, Danielle J. Camacho, Jill M. Legare Dec 2016

Shifting Gears In The Classroom—Movement Towardpersonalized Learning And Competency-Based Education, Danielle J. Camacho, Jill M. Legare

Publications

The 21st century workforce must be able to address dynamic situations, think critically, and solve problems by accessing and analyzing information (Wagner, 2011). In response to employer requirements for skilled students, administrators at 4-year colleges have designed nontraditional approaches to learning which included CBE and PL-based learning (Williams, Moser, Youngblood, & Singer, 2015). Colleges and universities continue to make adjustments in the curriculum to satisfy employer expectations. New graduates are expected to demonstrate mastery of general education competencies such as reading, writing, and critical thinking as well as industry-specific competencies and skills (Williams, Matt, & O’Reilly, 2014). CBE programs allow …

School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised: Factorial Invariance And Latent Means Differences Across Gender And Age In Spanish Children, Carolina Gonzálvez, Candido J. Inglés, Christopher A. Kearney, Maria Vicent, Ricardo Sanmartín, Jose M. García-Fernández

Psychology Faculty Research

The aim of this study was to analyze the factorial invariance and latent means differences of the Spanish version of the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised for Children (SRAS-R-C) in a sample of 1,078 students (50.8% boys) aged 8-11 years (M = 9.63, SD = 1.12). The results revealed that the proposed model in this study, with a structure of 18 items divided into four factors (Negative Affective, Social Aversion and/or Evaluation, To Pursue Attention and Tangible Reinforcements), was the best-fit model with a tetra-factorial structure, remaining invariant across gender and age. Analysis of latent means differences indicated that boys and …

Conducting Political Research In A Highly Sensitive Post-Conflict Environment: Reflections From The Internally Displaced Camps In Kenya / Muhammad Danial Azman, M. D. Azman

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

This article elucidates the ethical and methodological intricacies of the semi-structured interviews when the author conducted is qualitative-based fieldwork in the Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) in Nairobi and Rift Valley, Kenya. Research can be regarded as the production of knowledge, and the research process is the roadmap used in order to produce scientific knowledge about the objectivity of individual agency and its social reality, but there is a paucity of recent studies that reveal the complexity of conducting research in highly sensitive environments, especially in the IDP camps. This study hopes to fill in the gap in scholarship by interviewing …

Population Density, Habitat Dynamic And Aerial Survival Of Relict Cave Bivalves From Genus Congeria In The Dinaric Karst, Olga Jovanović Glavaš, Branko Jalžić, Helena Bilandžija

International Journal of Speleology

Caves are some of the least-known ecosystems on Earth and long-term ecological studies and population size estimates are very rare. Genus Congeria is a Tertiary relict that comprises three species from Dinaric karst area; C. kusceri, C. jalzici and C. mulaomerovici, each with very limited distribution. They are the only known cave bivalves and in contrast to many other cave species, they form populations with high densities. We estimated that the population of C. kusceri in Jama u Predolcu is between 72,454 and 72,906 individuals. The highest density occurred between one and three meters depth, and reached maximum …

Export Stimuli, Export Stages And Internationalization Pathways: The Case Of Indonesian Smes, Mohamad D. Revindo

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries are still constrained to seize the opportunity of trade liberalization as compared to their large counterparts. It has been argued that effective efforts to foster SME export require clear understanding of the factors that stimulate them to export. This study investigates the export stimuli of 385 Indonesian SMEs at different export stages (pre-exporting and exporting) and different internationalization pathways (domestically established exporter and born-global SMEs). Three types of export stimuli are consistently identified as the most important in all sub-samples: the presence of foreign buyers, the confidence in the products and the …

Study Skills Self Monitoring For Adolescents With Adhd, Rachel Michelle Lesse

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to see how self-monitoring affected academic progress among high school aged students with ADHD. Students were monitored throughout their study skills class period, where they learned to monitor themselves by assessing a variety of factors, such as personal grades, missing assignments, and personal reflection. Of the three students monitored, two increased grades in most of their academic subjects, and all increased their homework production post intervention. The study did not go without various limitations, however future implications are discussed as to the importance of this study.

Review Of Years 9 To 12 Tasmania : Final Report, Geoff N. Masters, Kathryn Moyle, Sheldon Rothman, Hilary Hollingsworth, Bill Perrett, Paul R. Weldon, Kate Perkins, Justin Brown, Ali Radloff, Patricia Freeman, Sofi Damianidis

Program monitoring and evaluation

The Tasmanian Government is currently implementing significant reforms to improve students’ retention and attainment in Tasmania’s schools. There is a concern in the Tasmanian community however, that their students’ performances are among the lowest in the nation. Reasons nominated for these results include weak literacy and numeracy levels; low attendance rates; high anxiety around transitions between Year 10 and Year 11 by some students, especially among those living outside of the larger cities; students seeking alternative education options; and family, financial, health and carer based issues. It is against this backdrop that the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) was …

As violence spiked in Mexico in clashes between drug trafficking organizations and law enforcement, news media were systematically silenced by cartels and cowed legitimate governments. Reliable information on street battles and their consequences ceased to flow through traditional channels to an anxious citizenry on the Mexican side of the U.S.-Mexico border 10 miles from McAllen, Texas. In Reynosa, Tamaulipas, a noted “plaza” territory contested by the Zetas and the Gulf Cartel, ordinary citizens became journalists in 2010, reporting under the umbrella of the pioneer #ReynosaFollow hashtag on the Twitter social media platform. This gave frightened citizens a sense of anonymity …

“Such Night Till This I Never Passed” : How The Dreams Of Adam And Eve Lead To The Decision To Fall In Paradise Lost, Robert B. Chapman

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the idea that the Fall in Paradise Lost by John Milton is not a sudden event, but rather Adam and Eve's adherence to temptations that begin long before, specifically in Eve's vision and Adam's thoughts on Eve. This project begins by challenging the ways in which readers of the poem often overlook Eve as they focus solely on Satan or Adam. By looking at Eve's depiction as truly Adam's equal in the poem, this thesis then moves to the idea that temptations are an individual experience that begins first in the mind. Often, readers and scholars explore …
