Let’S Play! A Study Examining The Acceptability Of Cross-Gender Play Of Children, Angela R. Youngs

The purpose of this study was to examine parental preference regarding their children and gender-specific and gender-neutral toys. More specifically, to examine some factors that may impact parents’ preferences regarding the types of toys their child chooses. The factors of interest used in the present study include general demographics (e.g., gender, age, etc.), gender role perceptions, religiosity, and level of conservatism. Participants were gathered from a survey-taking website. The sample consisted of 88 parents (43 female, 43 male, and 2 who chose not to identify) whose ages ranged from 22 to 62 (M = 31.82, SD = 6.95). Each …

The abortion doctrine laid out in Roe v. Wade permits a procedure necessary to preserve the life or the health of the pregnant woman, setting out what has come to be called the “life exception” and the “health exception.” This Article investigates the background and antecedents of the health exception, identifying three periods of formation and change up to the drafting of the Model Penal Code in 1959. It argues that theories of health lie at the heart of legal doctrine, shaping common-law treatment of abortion and persisting in nineteenth- and twentieth-century statutes. Physical Activity: Like Mother, Like Daughter?, Suzanne M. Keep

Michigan Journal of Public Health

Physical inactivity is a leading cause of death in the United States (U.S.), and is a public health priority. The majority of individuals do not engage in regular physical activity (PA). Hispanics have the highest inactivity rates (51.3%) in the U.S. (HealthyPeople.gov, 2012). This paper reports a gap in knowledge concerning factors that affect PA. Data was collected in Kent and Ottawa counties in Michigan, with Hispanic mothers (N=79) and their daughters (N=79). This study supports the relationship among societal norms, exercise self-efficacy and activity related affect, on commitment to a plan of PA. Theorized relationships appear to be more …
