Preservice Teachers’ Understanding Of The Language Arts: Using A Lens Of Critical Literacy, Delane Bender-Slack, Teresa Young
Preservice Teachers’ Understanding Of The Language Arts: Using A Lens Of Critical Literacy, Delane Bender-Slack, Teresa Young
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Preservice teachers are placed in educational environments to learn about teaching literacy and about literacy’s role in the English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. Of particular significance is how preservice teachers perceive and understand the varied components of language arts (i.e., reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing) while observing mentor teachers. The purpose of this research was to discover which language arts preservice teachers choose to observe during their field placements, and how that might impact the teaching of critical literacy. First, the authors situate the study in our understanding of the language arts and frame it within critical …
Development Of The Neuron Assessment For Measuring Biology Students’ Use Of Experimental Design Concepts And Representations, Annwesa P. Dasgupta, Trevor R. Anderson, Nancy J. Pelaez
Development Of The Neuron Assessment For Measuring Biology Students’ Use Of Experimental Design Concepts And Representations, Annwesa P. Dasgupta, Trevor R. Anderson, Nancy J. Pelaez
PIBERG Publications
Researchers, instructors, and funding bodies in biology education are unanimous about the importance of developing students’ competence in experimental design. Despite this, only limited measures are available for assessing such competence development, especially in the areas of molecular and cellular biology. Also, existing assessments do not measure how well students use standard symbolism to visualize biological experiments. We propose an assessment-design process that 1) provides background knowledge and questions for developers of new “experimentation assessments,” 2) elicits practices of representing experiments with conventional symbol systems, 3) determines how well the assessment reveals expert knowledge, and 4) determines how well the …
A Review Of The Evidence Supporting The Taste Of Non‐Esterified Fatty Acids In Humans, Cordelia Running, Richard D. Mattes
A Review Of The Evidence Supporting The Taste Of Non‐Esterified Fatty Acids In Humans, Cordelia Running, Richard D. Mattes
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Dietary fats contribute to the flavor of foods by multiple mechanisms. A role for their taste has only recently gained credence. Current evidence indicates non‐esterified fatty acids (NEFA) are the effective stimuli for the taste component. CD36 and GPR120 are putative receptors, but may not fully account for the totality of the range of sensations elicited by fatty acids. The sensory quality of long‐chain NEFA is not adequately characterized by commonly accepted taste primary qualities and has been termed oleogustus. There is marked individual variability in sensitivity to the taste of NEFA prompting hypotheses of genetic and environmental determinants. Though …

This interdisciplinary annotated bibliography records the details of over 400 English-language resources on the Festival, including books, chapters, articles, websites, transcriptions and videos. Divided into six main subsections―Culture & Society, History, Biography, Music, Film, Arts & Literature―for ease of consultation Woodstock Scholarship sheds light on …
Principals’ Perceptions Of Teacher-Student Interactions In Diversifying Suburban Middle Schools, Yolanda E. Bloodsaw
Principals’ Perceptions Of Teacher-Student Interactions In Diversifying Suburban Middle Schools, Yolanda E. Bloodsaw
Wayne State University Dissertations
This qualitative study examined the kinds of troublesome teacher-student interactions that principals in a large Midwestern metro community manage. Personal interview data from nine suburban middle school principals as well as a group interview with four of the nine participants followed an interpretivist paradigm. This study found that the tense teacher-student interactions are triggered by conflicting perceptions held by students and teachers as a result of racial/cultural differences and socioeconomic status. Conflicting perceptions included stereotypes, cultural insensitivity, student motivation, student survival, loud Black kids, and tardiness. The bulk of the teacher-student interactions described by participants primarily concerned interactions between the …
A Sociological Examination Of The Gendered Gambling Practices Of Ontario Adults, Anthony Vincenzo Iafrate
A Sociological Examination Of The Gendered Gambling Practices Of Ontario Adults, Anthony Vincenzo Iafrate
Wayne State University Dissertations
This research examines differences between men and women in their gambling practices, gambling outcomes, and gambling severity. Using secondary data produced by the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre, this research investigates the Ontario adults Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) from 2001 and 2005 to determine if a gender difference exists in the likelihood of becoming a problem gambler, the types of gambling activities one is likely to participate in, and the consequences one may experience as a result of gambling. This study focuses on a sociological approach considering potential gender differences in gambling preferences to be a direct consequence of …
Politics And Pedagogy: Recuperating Rhetoric And Composition's Native Ethical Tradition, Derek Risse
Politics And Pedagogy: Recuperating Rhetoric And Composition's Native Ethical Tradition, Derek Risse
Wayne State University Dissertations
Over the past decade, scholars in Rhetoric and Composition have shown renewed interest in the topic of ethics, prompting what some have described as an ethical turn in the discipline. Spurred by a deep-seated concern for the legacies of humanism, scholars have turned increasingly to extra-disciplinary referents in continental philosophy. This dissertation works to recuperate the discipline’s native ethical tradition via a critical rereading of the often-implicit treatment of ethics in Composition scholarship of the 1980s and 1990s. Returning to this “critical” moment and emphasizing the rich thinking around the question of ethics provides fuller and more disciplinary-specific resources for …
The Radical South: Grassroots Activism, Ethnicity, And Literary Form, 1960-1980, Elizabeth Fielder
The Radical South: Grassroots Activism, Ethnicity, And Literary Form, 1960-1980, Elizabeth Fielder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“The Radical South” examines the art and writings of Civil-Rights-era social movements and locates U.S. based political structures in a hemispheric and global network. I reveal that the Civil Rights Movement, ethnic nationalism, and second-wave feminism were not separate entities; rather, the cultural work of activists was an intersectional effort that defied national strategies, such as non-violent protest and race-based separatism, that were often determined by their urban counterparts. Thus, I argue that new political aesthetics emerged from grassroots activism and set in motion ethnic and racial cultural expressions that embraced multiple, even conflicting, identities. As much as this art …

Safety is an essential issue for organizations to survive, especially for hazardous industries such as the construction industry. The construction industry is considered to be one of the major industries that help in the growth of the economy and the infrastructure of all countries. Recently, scholars have paid increasing attention to the concept of safety culture due to its role in decreasing the occurrences of accidents and injuries. Safety culture has become the focus of all industries and has received much attention in recent years, especially within the construction industry. Absence of this culture is a major cause of injuries …
Perceived Culpability In Critical Multicultural Education: Understanding And Responding To Race Informed Guilt And Shame To Further Learning Outcomes Among White American College Students, Fernando Estrada
School of Education Faculty Works
In this investigation we explored among a U.S. sample of White college students the effect of perceived race-informed culpability--conceptualized as the self-conscious emotions known as White guilt and shame--on two critical multicultural education outcomes: modern prejudicial attitudes and demonstrated anti-racist knowledge. Interaction effects by participants' racial identity were also examined. Moderated hierarchical linear regression showed that the tendency to experience White guilt as well as White shame explained a significant portion of the variability in racist attitudes. For knowledge, only guilt had an effect. No interaction effects were observed. Limitations are discussed followed by implications for teaching and learning with …

Living Communication Pedagogy: Instructors With Visible Disabilities, Carrie E. Mulderink
Research Papers
In this paper, I argue that critical communication pedagogy, as a discipline, can benefit from an inclusion of instructors with visible disabilities in its literature and analysis. In particular, I employ my experiences as a teaching assistant with a visible disability to situate my own embodied knowledge as a way of understanding, in concert with literature reviews of critical communication pedagogy and instructors with visible disabilities. I also interview instructors with visible disabilities about their experiences to argue for our inclusion in critical communication pedagogy.

Niche Television Content, Taya Welter
University Honors Theses
This research ties together the concepts of group vitality and niche television content. Group vitality, the position a group takes based on structures in society, is partially formed by institutional support. This includes representation and depiction in the media. Niche describes specialized content that gratifies individuals, groups, and their needs. This content can be found in the form of books, music, film, television, and more. The current study focused on niche television content preference within specific groups of people based on their demographics. Separate genres were considered niche categories in this research. Participants were asked to rate how much they …

Trauma, Migrant Families, And Neoliberal Fantasies In Last Train Home, Yanjie Wang
Trauma, Migrant Families, And Neoliberal Fantasies In Last Train Home, Yanjie Wang
Asian and Asian American Studies Faculty Works
This paper examines the traumatic experience of migrant workers through a reading of Lixin Fan's award-winning documentary film Last Train Home(2009). I am not primarily concerned, like most trauma-studies-based research, with grand, clearly recognizable catastrophes. I also avoid generalizing about human suffering in the age of global capitalism. I focus rather on post-Socialist China's more hidden social violence and its traumatizing effect on the quotidian life of migrantworkers-a subaltern group on the periphery of society. I argue that the trauma of the marginalized population must be socially and politically contextualized. The first section of the essay investigates the traumatic sense …
Biological Markers For Pulpal Inflammation: A Systematic Review., Dan-Krister Rechenberg, Johnah C. Galicia, Ove A. Peters
Biological Markers For Pulpal Inflammation: A Systematic Review., Dan-Krister Rechenberg, Johnah C. Galicia, Ove A. Peters
All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Pulpitis is mainly caused by an opportunistic infection of the pulp space with commensal oral microorganisms. Depending on the state of inflammation, different treatment regimes are currently advocated. Predictable vital pulp therapy depends on accurate determination of the pulpal status that will allow repair to occur. The role of several players of the host response in pulpitis is well documented: cytokines, proteases, inflammatory mediators, growth factors, antimicrobial peptides and others contribute to pulpal defense mechanisms; these factors may serve as biomarkers that indicate the status of the pulp. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to …

Inviting Students To Determine For Themselves What It Means To Write Across The Disciplines, Brian Hendrickson, Genevieve Garcia De Mueller
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
Situated in the literature on threshold concepts and transfer of prior knowledge in WAC/WID and composition studies, with particular emphasis on the scholarship of writing across difference, our article explores the possibility of re-envisioning the role of the composition classroom within the broader literacy ecology of colleges and universities largely comprised of students from socioeconomically and ethno- linguistically underrepresented communities. We recount the pilot of a composi- tion course prompting students to examine their own prior and other literacy values and practices, then transfer that growing meta-awareness to the critical acquisition of academic discourse. Our analysis of students’ self-assessment memos …

The Role Of Algal Species On Phosphorus Bioavailability In Secondary Wastewater Effluents, Mitchell Thomas Swanson
The Role Of Algal Species On Phosphorus Bioavailability In Secondary Wastewater Effluents, Mitchell Thomas Swanson
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient responsible for the eutrophication of surface waters and marine coasts. Wastewater treatment technologies are being stressed to achieve low P effluents and national effluent P limits are expected in the coming years. This research investigates how different algae, as individual species and a mixed culture, utilize bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) when examined by the standard algal species Raphidocelis subcapitata along with Chlorella vulgaris and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as additional test species. It also investigates how different P-species contribute to BAP using the standard algal species. Results show there is no significant difference in %(BAP/total dissolved P) …

Bone Marrow Microenvironment Regulation Of Bcl6 In Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, William Lee Slone
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a hematological malignancy with approximately 6000 newly diagnosed cases every year. Although ALL is the most common malignancy in children, it can occur in patients of all ages. Great strides have been made in the treatment of ALL and remission rates are at all-time highs. However, relapse rates have remained relatively consistent, and relapse continues to be correlated with a poor prognosis in patients with ALL. As the site of origin and progression of ALL, the bone marrow microenvironment (BMM) is important in regulating tumor cell quiescence and proliferation. Of clinical relevance is the frequency …

Sites Of Education: Race, Memory, And The Conflicting Discourses Of Learning In America, 1827-1914, Douglas Terry
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is a cultural study that challenges the handling of race in the history of American education by exploring how educational discourse shapes race. It argues that education itself is a manifestation of race, inseparable from the iterative processes of racial formation. While we take it as a prevailing truism that race is learned, this dissertation shows how the educational system itself is central to this learning.;It explores race in the educational landscape in a similar way to how scholars explore tension between history and cultural memory. In this manner, the dissertation focuses on what it terms "sites of …

A Communion Of Churches: Indian Christians, English Ministers, And Congregations In New England, 1600-1775, Gregory Alan Michna
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation advances the study of New England's religious history by exploring the complex and contested religious discourse surrounding puritan ecclesiology and the conceptual place of Native Americans within physical and imagined communities. While relations between puritan missionaries such as John Eliot and Thomas Mayhew and early "Praying Indians," or Indian Christians, have been closely studied, this work draws attention to the importance of theology and religious discourse in realms like hermeneutics, ecclesiology, and eschatology in shaping the nature of these exchanges. Despite communal and cultural differences, religious culture frequently served as a means of bridging these gaps to foster …
Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cerebrovascular diseases are any pathological conditions that are caused by disruptions or alterations in the blood supply to the brain. The brain, which is only 2% of body mass, constantly requires a minimum of 20% of cardiac output to meet its unique metabolic demands. Cerebral tissue relies on aerobic respiration and therefore requires a constant, steady supply of blood to provide oxygen and glucose to make ATP. Insufficient perfusion of the brain, which occurs as a result of reduced or obstructed blood flow, results in cerebral ischemia; ischemic neurons quickly deplete their available ATP and die if blood flow is …
The Impact Of Cultural Encounters On The Cultural Competence Of Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Amy J. Witt
The Impact Of Cultural Encounters On The Cultural Competence Of Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Amy J. Witt
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: By the year 2050 it is expected more than fifty percent of the American population will be of non-European descent (United States Census Bureau, 2011). Racial and ethnic minorities in the United States (U.S.) have more limited access to health care and a poorer quality of health care received, regardless of insurance coverage. Nursing education must provide a means for acquiring cultural competence by nursing students to help combat the growing health disparities. While many different methodologies can be found in nursing curricula, the cultural encounter during the nursing program may prove to be a promising means of acquiring …

Diagnostic Practices Of Autism Spectrum Disorders In Brazil, Ana Claudia Vespa Mainer Dias
Diagnostic Practices Of Autism Spectrum Disorders In Brazil, Ana Claudia Vespa Mainer Dias
Master's Theses
In Brazil, in spite of over half a million students with special needs in primary education, little research has been conducted about ASD diagnostic practices. This involves learning about the training that professionals are receiving, what diagnostic practices are being implemented on the field, and whether those are being contextualized according to the Brazilian culture. Students with special needs are directly affected by the results of diagnostic practices, since identifying the individuals is one of the first steps. Lack of understanding about that stage may lead to the problematic realities of underidentification or overidentification, exclusion of children who should receive …
